7 coaches Shane Steichen could hire as Colts OC

Here are seven candidates Colts HC Shane Steichen could hire as offensive coordinator.

Indianapolis Colts fans can breathe. The is finally wait is over, and Shane Steichen is the new head coach for the franchise.

Now the question is, who will be his offensive coordinator? The 37-year-old coach will have to make the decision if he will want to call plays on gamedays or hand those duties off to whoever his offensive coordinator will be.

That decision could potentially impact the desire of a coach to take that job if they wish to be calling plays in that role. We should get that answer in Steichen’s opening press conference Tuesday, which could give better insight into who he may target.

But for now, let’s take a look at some potential names for the new offensive coordinator for Indianapolis:

Eagles’ Shane Steichen expected to finalize deal to become Colts next head coach

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen is expected to fly into Indianapolis and finalize a deal to become the Colts’ next head coach

The Shane Steichen era in Philadelphia appears ready to end at some point in the next few hours, as Adam Schefter is reporting that the Eagles offensive coordinator will become the next head coach of the Colts.

If the reports hold true, Steichen will lead a team that has weapons at wide receiver with Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce.

At running back, Jonathan Taylor is a top-five player, while Quenton Nelson is a top offensive lineman defensively, the Colts have talent in Kwity Paye, DeForest Buckner, and Shaquille Leonard just to name a few.

The Colts have $17.5M in cap space and hold the No. 4 overall pick in the upcoming draft, which could be former Ohio State star, C.J. Stroud.

Steichen has overseen the Eagles’ offensive explosion since taking over play-calling duties during the 2021 season and has a good reputation for a run-centric approach to the offense while helping develop Chargers star signal caller, Justin Herbert.

Steichen has been at the helm of Jalen Hurts’ MVP candidacy, Miles Sanders logging his first 1,000-yard rushing season, along with two 1,000-yard receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Former Jets on staffs of Chiefs and Eagles in Super Bowl LVII

Former Jets on staffs of Chiefs and Eagles in Super Bowl LVII

A trio of former assistant coaches for the Jets will be on the sidelines Sunday in Arizona as the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

The Eagles have a pair of former Jets assistants, including pass game coordinator Kevin Patullo and defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson.

Patullo was the quarterbacks coach for Todd Bowles in 2015 and 2016. Wilson worked under Bowles and Adam Gase as defensive backs coach from 2017-2020 and also was the defensive pass game coordinator in 2019 and 2020 under Gase. Both Patullo and Wilson were hired by Nick Sirianni in 2021.

Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was on Herm Edwards’ staff from 2001-2003 as a defensive assistant and linebackers coach. Merritt is finishing up his fourth season coaching Kansas City’s defensive backs for Andy Reid.

Two former players are also involved in some capacity. Former Jets running back La’Mical Perine is on the Chiefs’ practice squad and former offensive tackle Ben Ijalana is a scouting assistant for the Eagles.

Updated list of OC candidates the Eagles could target with Shane Steichen heading to the Colts

Here is an updated look at 10 offensive coordinator candidates the Philadelphia Eagles could target with Shane Steichen likely to accept the Colts’ head coaching job

Nick Sirianni now appears just days away from officially having his own coaching tree and with the expectation that Shane Steichen (Colts) and Jonathan Gannon (Cardinals) will land jobs, we’re taking an early look at potential replacements.

Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success.

Philadelphia’s second-year head coach has far exceeded expectations and proven that he was the perfect target for the role. However, it’s important to remember that Steichen had a massive role in the offense.

Sirianni described this last summer how involved Steichen is with everything the Eagles have done offensively. He started calling plays late in the 2021 season, playing a pivotal role in the Birds’ offense taking off. It’s a change that carried over into 2022 with Philly boasting one of the top offenses all season.

Interest in Steichen will go beyond his work in Philadelphia. He served as the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator in 2020, working alongside Justin Herbert in a record-setting rookie season.

Combine his work with Herbert and Jalen Hurts, and that’s a future NFL head coach.

Here’s an updated list of potential candidates with Steichen set to take his talents to the AFC.

4 possible OC candidates for Frank Reich’s Panthers

Are you tired of playing Charlie Kelly and trying to connect all of the offensive coordinator dots to Frank Reich? Then we got you covered, Panthers fans.

After Thursday’s hiring of Frank Reich, mum currently seems to be the word on the rest of the Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff. And that includes the offensive coordinator position, which may or may not belong to 2022’s play caller Ben McAdoo at this point.

So, who could fill the spot if the team opts for an overhaul? Here are four possible candidates, all with some sort of link to Reich, for the job.

Jets interview Eagles pass-game coordinator Kevin Patullo for offensive coordinator position

Jets interview Eagles pass-game coordinator Kevin Patullo for OC

The New York Jets began their search this week for a new offensive coordinator to replace Mike LaFleur. That search started with a former Jets assistant.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Jets interviewed Eagles passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo on Friday.

Patullo spent two years with the Jets from 2015 to 2016 as their quarterbacks coach under head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

As Connor Hughes of SNY noted, the original plan was for Patullo to take over as offensive coordinator from Gailey after two or three years, but after a disastrous 2016 season that saw the Jets go from 10-6 to 5-11, Patullo was among a handful of Jets assistants fired.

After Patullo was fired by the Jets, he joined Texas A&M as a senior offensive analyst in 2017 before joining Frank Reich’s staff in Indianapolis in 2018.

Patullo coached wide receivers for the Colts for two years before becoming a pass game specialist in 2020. Then in 2021, Patullo was brought along by Nick Sirianni to the Philadelphia Eagles and he has been their pass game coordinator for two seasons, helping the Eagles to one of the best offensive showings in the league this season, a 14-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Ranking offensive coordinator candidates the Eagles could target if Shane Steichen departs

Nick Sirianni says he has a planned response and we’re ranking 10 OC candidates the Eagles could target if Shane Steichen lands an NFL head coaching job in 2023

Nick Sirianni is weeks away from officially having his own coaching tree and with the expectation that a team will likely hire Shane Steichen (OC) and Jonathan Gannon (DC), we’re taking an early look at potential replacements.

Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success.

Philadelphia’s second-year head coach has far exceeded expectations and proven that he was the perfect target for the role. However, it’s important to remember that Shane Steichen has a massive role in the offense.

Combine his work with Herbert and Jalen Hurts, and that’s a future NFL head coach.

Sirianni knows his assistants are wanted and he has a plan for their departures.

“Of course, I want to keep these guys, they’re great coordinators, but in the event that I lose them, I have an idea of what I want to do at both spots. The answer is sometimes, yes, it’s in the building, and sometimes it’s outside of the building. But I feel like we have a lot of good options, and I feel like we have a lot of good options in the building that we’d be excited about if that were to happen.”

Here are 10 potential targets for Sirianni if Steichen lands a job in the 2023 cycle ranked from best to worst option.

Bears have interest in Eagles’ director of player personnel Ian Cunningham for front office job

After rumors that Kevin Patullo could be on his way to #Chicago as potential offensive coordinator for the #Bears, the #Eagles director of player personnel is also in the mix for a high ranking job in the #WindyCity

The Bears have hired Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to be their next head coach and that could make things interesting in Philadelphia, as the former Colts defensive coordinator is looking to raid Philadelphia of its talent.

Eagles’ passing game coordinator, Kevin Patullo, could be in the hunt to be Chicago’s offensive coordinator, and now Ian Cunningham, could be on the radar as well.

Cunningham came to Philadelphia after spending nine years in the Ravens organization and he drew interest from the Panthers for their GM job last offseason.

Cunningham’s tenure with the Eagles started out as the director of college scouting before being promoted to assistant director of player personnel in 2019.

Bears could target Eagles’ Kevin Patullo for offensive coordinator

New Bears coach Matt Eberflus may look to Eagles passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo to become the team’s new offensive coordinator.

The Chicago Bears finally have their new head coach in former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. The 51-year old Eberflus will reportedly become the 18th head coach in team history and is the first major move by new general manager Ryan Poles.

With Eberflus now on board, the question now becomes who will be on his staff, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Eberflus may look to Philadelphia Eagles passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo to become the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Patullo and Eberflus worked together with the Colts from 2018-20. While Eberflus manned the defense, Patullo was the wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019. He transitioned to the pass game specialist in 2020, working with Philip Rivers in his lone season as a Colt.

Patullo then joined Eagles coach Nick Siriani in Philadelphia in the same role this past season, tutoring Jalen Hurts. The Eagles ranked near the bottom of the league in passing yards per game this past season, averaging just over 200 yards per game.

Patullo also has had coaching stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, and New York Jets, working in various offensive roles through the late 2000s and 2010s, as well as some college stops as well. He has been coaching in some capacity since 2007.

Eberflus and the Bears will be looking for someone who can not only lead an effective NFL offense, but can also get the most out of quarterback Justin Fields. With Patullo’s experiences with other NFL quarterbacks, plus his connections with Eberflus, he may be the favorite to land the job.
