Marcus Brady on Chargers’ wide receivers: ‘We know we have to fill the room’

The Chargers are thin at the wide receiver position.

Chargers pass game coordinator Marcus Brady gave his assessment of the wide receiver room on Monday when asked about it in his media availability:

Right now, we have a small group, as it is [laughter]. They know that, we know that. It’s still early right now. Obviously, we have the Draft coming up. We’ll see where that goes. Then, talking to [General Manager] Joe [Hortiz] and Jim [Harbaugh], obviously, we know that we have to fill the room. We’ll get to that point when the time’s right.

As Brady mentions, the draft is rapidly approaching for the team and there should be an expectation that multiple wide receivers will be added between now and OTAs. If not numerous wideouts in the draft, specifically, the Chargers have also been linked to free agents like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Tyler Boyd.

On the departures of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, Brady said they’re trying to ultimately replace the production of two players that have had “elite success” in the league.

Brady also said that the No. 1 thing they’re looking for in wide receivers is the ability to get open.

The number one thing is being able to get open, create space and give a throw for the quarterback. Guys that are great off of the line of scrimmage on their releases, if they’re getting pressed, guys that are great at top of the route, and then guys that can make those tough catches. It’s a combination of all three of those. Then, kind of go from there.

Sitting a little over two weeks from the draft, we’ll see how the Chargers evaluate some of the current class based on ability. Brady also mentioned that he “loves” working hand in hand with wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal right now in getting guys to learn the terminology early on. Surely, both coaches’ player evaluation and development skill sets could become important soon.

Here’s who’s on Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers coaching staff

Here’s a look at who’s onboard the Chargers coaching staff as it continues to take shape.

Since being hired as head coach of the Chargers, Jim Harbaugh has been hard at work to build out his staff.

Here’s a look at who’s onboard as it continues to take shape:

Report: Chargers bringing back Shane Day as quarterbacks coach

The Chargers are bringing back a familiar face.

The Chargers are bringing back Shane Day to serve as the team’s quarterbacks coach, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

Day was previously Los Angeles’ QBs coach during the 2021 and 2022 seasons under former head coach Brandon Staley. He was relieved along with former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Day spent the 2023 season as the Texans’ senior offensive assistant.

Day cracked in the NFL in 2007 as the 49ers’ offensive quality control coach.

Day has served as the quarterback coach of the Bears (2010-11) and 49ers (2019-20), the assistant offensive line coach of the Commanders (2014-15), and the tight ends coach of the Dolphins (2016-18).

Justin Herbert had a good relationship with Day, so familiarity should be good for him as the fifth-year signal-caller is about to play in yet another new offensive system.

The Chargers announced Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator and Marcus Brady as their passing game coordinator.

Ex-Colts OC Marcus Brady joins Chargers staff under Jim Harbaugh

Marcus Brady is joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff in L.A.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers, according to multiple reports Sunday night.

Brady spent the last 1.5 seasons as an offensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles working under another former Colts offensive coordinator in Nick Sirianni. This followed his departure from the Colts during the disastrous 2022 season.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Brady will be taking on the role of pass-game coordinator.

Brady was quietly popular this offseason, taking interviews with the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers as well.

Brady spent 4.5 seasons with the Colts working as the assistant quarterbacks coach (2018), quarterbacks coach (2019-2020) and offensive coordinator (2021-2022) under former head coach Frank Reich.

Now, he will join the coaching staff under former Colts quarterback and San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who was hired by the Chargers last week.

Brady was recently the Eagles’ senior offensive assistant.

Before joining Philadelphia, Brady was with the Colts for five seasons, starting as their assistant quarterbacks coach in 2018.

That year, he helped Andrew Luck finish with one of the best seasons of his career, in which he threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns en route to winning the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Brady was promoted to quarterbacks coach the following season. In 2020, Philip Rivers finished the season in the top ten of completion percentage (68%) and passing yards (4,169).

He became the Colts’ offensive coordinator in 2021. That year, Indianapolis finished second in the NFL in rushing yards per game (149.4) and yards per carry (5.1) and tied for the fifth-most rushing touchdowns (22).

Before joining the NFL ranks, Brady was an offensive coordinator in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for eight seasons.

Thomas Brown reportedly not returning to Panthers in 2024

Per The Athletic, the Panthers are not planning on retaining OC Thomas Brown.

Another domino is falling over at 800 South Mint Street.

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the Carolina Panthers will not be retaining offensive coordinator Thomas Brown heading into the 2024 season. The news comes less than 24 hours after the reported departures of special teams coordinator Chris Tabor and offensive line coach James Campen.

Brown, who was hired to be Carolina’s offensive coordinator last offseason, did not begin the campaign as the unit’s play-caller. That responsibility initially belonged to now-former head coach Frank Reich, who handed the duties over to Brown after six weeks and then reclaimed them just three games later.

Following Reich’s firing entering Week 13, Brown was given control of the offense for the remaining six games of the season. The Panthers finished with an average of 265.3 yards per game, the fewest in the NFL.

With their new head coach in Dave Canales coming over as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brown’s dismissal isn’t much of a surprise. The team has already reportedly requested interviews with Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers coach Brad Idzik and Philadelphia Eagles senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady for their offensive coordinator position.

The 37-year-old Brown has interviewed with the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers for their offensive coordinator jobs this month.

Ejiro Evero reportedly has 2nd HC interview with Seahawks on Saturday

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Panthers DC Ejiro Evero has a second interview for the Seahawks’ HC job today.

Ejiro Evero’s time in Charlotte may already be coming to an end. And if it is, he may have a few exit strategies available to him.

One of those could be an even greater opportunity out west, as the Seattle Seahawks are reportedly holding a second interview with the Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator on Saturday for their head-coaching vacancy. ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter was first with the news this morning.

Evero, who also reached the second stage of the Atlanta Falcons’ search, impressed in his first year with the organization. Despite a catalog of injuries to key players and a lack of complementary football from the team’s struggling offense, the Panthers finished fourth in total defense this past season.

His future in Carolina, however, is more uncertain than it’s ever been this offseason.

With the new duo of president of football operations/general manager Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales now in place, the coaching staff may experience quite an overhaul in the coming weeks. We already saw the first dominoes drop last night, as the team is seemingly planning on parting ways with special teams coordinator Chris Tabor and offensive line coach James Campen.

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown is also likely on the outs. The Panthers have reportedly requested interviews with Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers coach Brad Idzik and Philadelphia Eagles senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady for Brown’s position.

Report: Panthers request interview with Ex-Colts OC Marcus Brady

Marcus Brady was requested to interview for the Panthers OC job.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady was requested to interview for the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator vacancy, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Friday.

Brady spent 4.5 seasons with the Colts working as the assistant quarterbacks coach (2018), quarterbacks coach (2019-2020) and offensive coordinator (2021-2022) under former head coach Frank Reich.

The Panthers just hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their new head coach to replace Reich, who was fired midway through the 2023 season.

After Brady was let go by the Colts midway through the 2022 season, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles staff for the remainder of the campaign as an offensive assistant. He then took on the role of senior offensive assistant for the 2023 season.

Brady also was requested by the Chicago Bears to interview for their offensive coordinator position last week.

Panthers reportedly request interview with Marcus Brady for OC job

Per NFL Network, the Panthers have requested an interview with Marcus Brady for their OC job.

Dave Canales’ pal is going to have some competition.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Friday, the Carolina Panthers have requested to interview Philadelphia Eagles senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady for their offensive coordinator position. He is now the second known candidate for the job, joining Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers coach Idzik—who, according to JC Allen of BucsGameday, received a request earlier in the day.

Brady, a former quarterback in the Canadian Football League, has six years of NFL coaching experience. That journey started in 2018, under Frank Reich as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Indianapolis Colts.

The San Diego, Calif. native would move up within the ranks—as he was named the quarterbacks coach in 2019 and then the offensive coordinator in 2021. Brady’s first season in the role saw the Colts 347.1 total yards per game, the 16th-most in the league.

He’d be fired in the middle of the next season, with Indianapolis sitting at 3-4-1 entering Week 9. Philadelphia then hired Brady as an offensive consultant for the remainder of the 2022 campaign.
