Ravens officially sign OL D.J. Fluker

The Baltimore Ravens had previously agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman D.J. Fluker but made the deal official.

The Baltimore Ravens had previously agreed to terms with veteran offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, but they made the deal official, announcing it on Twitter.

Fluker had been released by the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, entering free agency. He’ll join a Ravens roster that will see competitions for multiple starting jobs along the interior of the offensive line. Right guard is the job most clearly up for grabs after Marshal Yanda retired this offseason, but general manager Eric DeCosta also said left guard and center will see competition in training camp as well.

While Baltimore has Ben Powers likely penciled in for the starting job at right guard, Fluker has the experience to make a push there as well. As a former first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and with seven years in the league, Fluker is the most experienced player on Baltimore’s offensive line behind backup tackle Andre Smith. Fluker also has played at tackle, giving the Ravens another potential backup option for Ronnie Stanley and Orlando Brown Jr.

Fluker’s signing had likely been held up as Baltimore waited for the offensive lineman to pass a physical. Teams have struggled to get physicals done with states enacting stay-at-home restrictions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Ravens, like most NFL teams, have agreed to terms with players with deals being made official when physicals were done and passed. However, Baltimore has also seen one deal — for defensive tackle Michael Brockers — get canceled due to concerns that arose with a physical.

3 easiest games on Ravens’ 2020 schedule

The Baltimore Ravens might have some tough matchups on the 2020 schedule but they also face some of the worst teams in the NFL too.

The Baltimore Ravens’ 2020 schedule was released. While we’ve known who the Ravens would play this season, the order was still up in the air and could dramatically change the difficulty of some matchups. But with the schedule released, some games look to be even easier than previously thought.

While Baltimore has more than a few really tough matchups to be concerned about, the easiest strength-of-schedule in the NFL will see the Ravens face off against some cans as well. These three games should be the easiest of the bunch for Baltimore.

Week 5 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

All the talk is rightfully focused on the Bengals’ first-round pick and new franchise quarterback Joe Burrow. Many pundits think Cincinnati is primed for a quick turnaround this season and could be a legitimate threat with Burrow under center.

But it’s not like Andy Dalton was a terrible quarterback before Burrow came to town and the Bengals weren’t consistently competitive in the AFC North before this draft. Nearly all rookie quarterbacks struggle upon getting into the league, including greats like Peyton Manning. Week 5 will be Burrow’s first serious test and welcoming into the NFL by a great defense and the Ravens have often made rookie passers look especially terrible.

An early home game against a division opponent with a rookie quarterback and limited talent on both sides of the ball should give Baltimore a massive edge in this game.

Ravens LB Patrick Queen buys his mother a Range Rover

Patrick Queen, the Baltimore Ravens’ first-round pick, used Mother’s Day to get his mom a new Range Rover.

After years of hard work to get to this point, those selected in the 2020 NFL Draft have had their dreams come true. With Mother’s Day over the weekend, it was the perfect opportunity for Baltimore Ravens’ first-round pick, Patrick Queen, to show a little extra thanks to his mother for helping get him to this level. Queen posted a photo on Twitter of his mother next to a Range Rover, complete with a red bow on the hood.

Queen isn’t the first NFL player to show his mom a little love upon making it to the professional level. Wide receiver Marquise Brown, the Ravens’ first-round pick last year, bought his mother a new house and car, posting a heartwarming video of her reaction.

If Queen lives up to the legacy of Baltimore’s first-round linebackers, he’ll have plenty of chances to buy his family new cars along the way.

1. Eagles have an opportunity for a strong start

The Birds will open up against the rebuilding Redskins on the road, followed by two straight home games before traveling to San Francisco for Sunday night football. Expectations aren’t too stressful this season but anything short of a 3-1 start could be cause for concern.

Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins among favorites for Offensive Rookie of the Year award

The Baltimore Ravens nailed their second-round pick in running back J.K. Dobbins, who is now among the favorites to win the 2020 OROY award

[jwplayer dFPo5xNk-ThvAeFxT]

The Baltimore Ravens once again turned in a masterful draft, picking up a bunch of steals and earning rave reviews for their work in the 2020 NFL Draft. Among their first picks was Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins. While many Ravens fans didn’t love the idea of taking a running back that early in the draft, fans of rival teams hating Baltimore for the selection helped create a quick about-face for the Dobbins’ pick. Apparently, oddsmakers are also big fans of what Dobbins could do with the Ravens.

According to BetMGM, Dobbins has the eighth-best odds of winning the 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. While Dobbins rightfully falls behind the No. 1 overall pick in Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who holds the top odds, he’s ahead of a number of players that got drafted well before him.

Dobbins has better odds than several first-round picks, like Las Vegas wide receiver Henry Ruggs III (12th overall), Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jaelen Reagor (21st overall), and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson (22nd overall). Dobbins was the fifth running back selected in the 2020 NFL Draft but holds the fourth-best odds at that position, beating Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers (52nd overall).

There’s good reason to think Dobbins could have the type of season worthy of awards. While Baltimore has Mark Ingram as their starter, Dobbins will likely see some playing time as a rookie. If Dobbins is simply amazing and eats into Ingram’s snaps or there’s an injury that pushes him into the starting role, the Ravens’ offense is primed for blockbuster stats.

[lawrence-related id=46583]

Baltimore was the best rushing team in the league last season, breaking a 41-year old record for single-season rushing yards. Granted, quarterback Lamar Jackson was the Ravens’ top runner last year, breaking his own records, Ingram and Gus Edwards got plenty of yards and rushing touchdowns on their own. Ingram and Edwards combined for 1,729 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on 335 total carries, adding another 292 receiving yards and touchdown receptions on 33 combined catches.

If Baltimore can muster anywhere near the success they had on the ground last season and Dobbins gets serious playing time, he should at least be in the running for the rookie award.

Ravens sign 3rd-round pick Tyre Phillips

The Baltimore Ravens bring their total to 7 of their 2020 NFL Draft picks signed after inking third-round offensive lineman Tyre Phillips

[jwplayer CxqcH1C2-ThvAeFxT]

The Baltimore Ravens continue to work on getting their 2020 NFL Draft class under contract. After signing six of it’s picks this week, Baltimore announced via Twitter it’s also signed third-round offensive lineman Tyre Phillips. With seven picks signed, it leaves the following three still remaining:

  • First-round LB Patrick Queen
  • Third-round WR Devin Duvernay
  • Third-round LB Malik Harrison

Phillips is expected to compete for the now-vacant starting right guard job following Marshal Yanda’s retirement. But with experience at tackle, Phillips could also be a backup for both Ronnie Stanley and Orlando Brown Jr., which would help ease one of the Ravens’ biggest remaining holes.

As we noted in our instant analysis of the selection, Phillips is a bruiser with great footwork and technique. With Baltimore’s offense being so run-heavy, especially with a mobile quarterback like Lamar Jackson under center, having a wealth of offensive line talent to continue developing was a wise decision for the Ravens.

5 takeaways from Jags’ 2020 schedule

There is a lot to takeaway from the Jags’ schedule but the biggest may be the rough ending to it.

The league released the schedules of all 32 teams Thursday including the Jacksonville Jaguars’. With the team set to play a full slate of home games for the first time since 2012, many fans were excited to see the order in which the home schedule would come.

[vertical-gallery id=32491]

Coach Doug Marrone will look to improve upon the results we’ve seen in 2018-19 and will have to do so with a very young roster. One thing working in his favor is the fact that the Jags’ strength of schedule ranks 22nd, significantly better than what he’s faced in the past.

All of that said, here are some of the observations we came away with after thoroughly evaluating the schedule:

Mandatory Credit: Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

The Jags start off the season with two difficult divisional games

The Jaguars will start their 2020 regular season against the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans Week 1-2, which means they can pile up two losses quickly. On the other hand, it also could give them a chance to make some noise early within the AFC South.

Neither opponent will be easy to defeat, although the Jags did split their series with both last year. However, things are different now as Indy has Philip Rivers who is 7-2 overall against them with a 69.44% completion rate in their head-to-heads. Additionally, he’s thrown 24 touchdowns with just five picks against them.

The Titans also have the Jags’ number as Jacksonville has lost five of their last six meetings against them. The good thing is that the one victory that came against the Titans over that span was with Gardner Minshew II under center. He’ll be the one battling them Week 2 as well, so maybe he can restore his magic and get the Jags an early win in the season.

The Baltimore Ravens 2020 schedule is littered with amazing matchups. Though it might be the easiest strength of schedule based on last year’s records, Baltimore will face off against a number of top teams in 2020.

With so many great games circled on the calendar, the writers here at Ravens Wire came together to discuss which ones we’re most excited about this season. Take a look below to see which games we’ve highlighted and what we believe makes them so special.

Matthew Stevens: Week 11 vs. Tennessee Titans

This game didn’t get much love on the schedule with it being in a standard timeslot, but seeing no hoopla about the matchup is actually even more fitting. It’s going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight between two teams that love to run the football and are coached well. The fact this is a replay of the Divisional Playoffs only adds fuel to the fire and Ravens fans are absolutely going to be pumped for it.

Baltimore spent so much of their offseason gearing up for this exact game and shoring up the weaknesses that got them kicked out of the playoffs in the first place. But this will be the real test and if the Ravens can not only win but pull off a decisive victory, you’d have to think their Super Bowl chances are going to shoot through the roof.

No matter which way you slice it, this might actually be Baltimore’s most exciting game of the 2020 season.

Ravens to travel the least in the NFL in 2020

The Baltimore Ravens will only travel 6,310 miles for games on their 2020 schedule, making it the least of any team over the last four years

The Baltimore Ravens won’t have to travel very far from home in order to play football in 2020. With the Ravens’ 2020 schedule released, Baltimore has a pretty easy slate of games ahead of them and not a lot of travel to be had.

According to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, the Ravens will only travel 6,310 miles this season, which is the lowest of any team over the last four years. They’ll travel nearly a third of the 15,624 miles they saw last season and have no road games on the west coast. The furthest game for Baltimore will be in Week 2 against the Houston Texans, a distance of 1,254.7 miles when calculated from stadium to stadium.

After traveling across the country for at least one game in each of the last three seasons, Baltimore’s limited travel in 2020 is a welcome change. In 2015, the Ravens had four long treks, opening the season with back-to-back games against the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders and as well as back-to-back games against the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.

While the lack of long flights might put a dent in someone’s air miles, the hope is the Ravens are able to stay fresher over the course of the season and it will result in more wins. But we’ll just have to see if that theory proves correct and if Baltimore can improve upon their 14-2 record from last season.
