Win-loss projections after schedule release shows little respect for the Lions

When the ESPN beat writers for every team went through schedules game-by-game, they predicted the Detroit Lions to finish 2-14

One of the first things the NFL media gets tasked to do following the schedule release extravaganza is to go through each game and project wins and losses. Those projections tend to be quite optimistic, created through “homer” eyes. Typically done in haste, most of the projections are snap reactions to the opponent.

Those snap reactions reflect the general national perception of the NFL teams. And based on the reactions and projections from the team beat writers at ESPN, the perception of the Detroit Lions is that they’re bound to be terrible in 2020.

ESPN’s own Lions analyst, Mike Rothstein, projects the team to finish 8-8. But for a broader look at how the Lions are perceived, I decided to check what the game-by-game predictions involving every Lions game were forecasted by the ESPN analysts for their respective teams.

Reverse engineering the predictions for the individual games from the ESPN analysts who cover the other teams that play the Lions, it seems that most teams are pretty confident in chalking up a “W” when their teams play the Lions.

Here is what those other reporters projected in the Lions games. This is what each forecasted for their respective games with Detroit:

Week 1 – Bears: loss

Week 2 – Packers: win

Week 3 – Cardinals: win

Week 4 -Saints: win

Week 5 – Bye

Week 6 – Jaguars: win

Week 7 – Falcons: win

Week 8 – Colts: win

Week 9 – Vikings: win

Week 10 – Redskins: loss

Week 11 – Panthers: win

Week 12 – Texans: win

Week 13 – Bears: win

Week 14 – Packers: win

Week 15 – Titans: win

Week 16 – Buccaneers: win

Week 17 – Vikings: win

The ESPN reporters covering the other teams projected a 14-2 record going against the Lions. Only the Bears in Week 1 and the Redskins in Week 10 saw their teams losing to Detroit.

1. Eagles have an opportunity for a strong start

The Birds will open up against the rebuilding Redskins on the road, followed by two straight home games before traveling to San Francisco for Sunday night football. Expectations aren’t too stressful this season but anything short of a 3-1 start could be cause for concern.

Philadelphia Eagles Week-12 Monday night matchup named a revenge game to watch

Eagles Week-12 matchup with the Seahawks named a revenge game to watch

The NFL season always provides an opportunity for teams and players to seek redemption against a certain opponent.

The 2020 NFL schedule was released on Thursday night and the Eagles have a tough but favorable schedule this season.

NFL.com broke down the NFL season and ranked the top “spicy revenge” games on tap for this upcoming season.

Carson Wentz and the Eagles matchup with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 12 made the top of the list.

Carson Wentz vs. Seattle Seahawks
Week 12: Monday, Nov. 30 at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN

Carson Wentz waited four seasons for his first playoff start with the Eagles. His debut lasted just two series before a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jadeveon Clowney ended his 2019 campaign. Clowney’s hit was ruled incidental by game officials, but many Eagles fans didn’t agree and expressed their outrage about the call during and after the ensuing 17-9 loss to Seattle. Now Wentz gets another crack at the Seahawks in prime time, though it remains to be seen if Clowney, who remains a free agent, will be on the field for this game. Who knows, maybe they’ll be teammates.

A current free agent, Clowney is unlikely to be a participant in the 2020 matchup after the Seahawks decided his current price doesn’t fit their salary cap needs.

Wentz exit from the game precipitated the Eagles move to acquire Jalen Hurts in the NFL Draft, in hopes of shoring up the backup quarterback spot.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: NFL schedule release edition

This week in Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly, we take a look at the 2020 NFL schedule release.

The NFL schedule release is always a big event for die-hard football fans and that includes elite fantasy football owners too. It is key to see when the top players have bye weeks, do they have games in good weather later in the year, key matchups, and to figure out how you can best maximize your fantasy football team based on the new NFL schedule.

In this week’s Fantasy Football Weekly, let’s look at all that and more as we dive into the 2020 NFL schedule.

Detroit Lions Fantasy Focus

The Detroit Lions have a very tough start to their schedule, an early bye week, and no primetime night games. They do have 15 out of 16 games that should be in good weather or a dome, 14 of the 16 games are 1:00 PM EST starts, and a heavy home schedule to end the season.

I’d expect the good weather and dome games to favor the current multi-dimensional Lions offense and should allow them to throw it very well throughout the year. I also think that will help their run game too where they should see a marked improvement on the ground with fantasy rookie standout D’Andre Swift from Georgia now in a Lions uniform.

Fantasy performers to focus on for the Lions would be hard to identify as I’m not sure there will be many top-scoring stars for Detroit when it comes to fantasy football. In this case that isn’t necessarily a bad thing as I see this as a very balanced offense that will spread the ball around to many different players each week. I could see a bit of a dip for Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones, but increased production for Kerryon Johnson and T.J. Hockenson.

This schedule isn’t an easy one, but it does have some good fantasy football elements for the Detroit Lions. The key will be playing well through that first stretch of tough games, staying healthy, and spreading out defenses with all their weapons. I expect their players to be solid fantasy football players in 2020, but not guys that will win your league for you.

Team Bye Weeks

Week 5: Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers

Week 6: Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks,

Week 7: Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans

Week 8: Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins

Week 9: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles

Week 10: Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers

Week 11: Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers

Week 12: No Teams On Bye

Week 13: Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Intriguing Lions Fantasy Football Games

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions, Sunday, September 13, 2020 (Home and Season Opener), 1:00 PM, EST

Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers, Sunday, September 20, 2020, 1:00 PM, EST

New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions, Sunday, October 4, 2020, 1:00 PM, EST

Detroit Lions at Atlanta Falcons, Sunday, October 25, 2020, 1:00 PM, EST

Houston Texans at Detroit Lions, Thursday, November 26, 2020, 12:30 PM, EST

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Detroit Lions, December 27 or 28, 2020 (TBD)

Final Word

It may seem like a minor thing, but the NFL schedule can have a major impact on your fantasy team. I still say take the best players in your draft and figure out the bye weeks as you go, but making sure you don’t have multiple top players on a bye week later in the season could be a key to you making the playoffs or your team being on the outside looking in.

Another strategy I’ve seen is to load up on bye weeks for all your top players and then even if you lose that week all of your players are then available for all other weeks. This strategy is pretty risky and doesn’t leave much room for injuries or trades to make it work as intended. I feel you should use the information above though to make good decisions while in your drafts, but the NFL schedule is only one of the many factors to be considered and shouldn’t be the reason you win or lose your championship.

Schedule Release: Eagles to open season on the road against the Redskins

Philadelphia Eagles to open 2020 NFL season on the road against Redskins

In a repeat of the 2019 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles will open the 2020 NFL season against the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m., at FedEx Field.

The full schedule has been released with tentative plans amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has many U.S. states under stay-at-home orders.

The plan is for the 2020 NFL season to start on time and the NFL has taken measures to start opening up team facilities.

The Eagles will play home games against the Ravens, Bengals, Rams, Saints, Seahawks, Cowboys, New York Giants, and Redskins, and road games at the Cardinals, Browns, Packers, Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, Giants and Redskins.

Philadelphia won both meetings last season and opened the season with a 32-27 win over Washington in the season at Lincoln Financial Field.
