49ers injury updates heading into bye week

A handful of #49ers injury updates leading into their week off.

The 49ers on Sunday wrapped up their first half of the year with a Week 8 loss to the Bengals. Now they’ll head into the bye for a much-needed week off to rest a handful of players who were either banged up Sunday or before.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday jumped on a conference call and talked through the club’s injury updates:

Vikings/49ers injury report sees some changes

The Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers injury report is out for Friday and there were some slight changes

The initial injury report for the Minnesota Vikings had four players on it Thursday afternoon. When the latest injury report came out on Friday afternoon, they didn’t see any changes.

  • LG Ezra Cleveland (foot)-Did not practice
  • CB Akayleb Evans (oblique)-Limited
  • OLB Pat Jones II (shoulder)-Limited
  • WR Jalen Nailor (hamstring)-Limited

With Cleveland missing his second-straight practice, it’s looking more likely that Dalton Risner will get the start on Monday night.

The 49ers saw improvement from both left guard Aaron Banks and linebacker Dre Greenlaw both saw some improvement, going from no practice to being limited.

  • LG Aaron Banks (ankle)-Limited
  • LB Dre Greenlaw (hamstring)-Limited
  • RB Christian McCaffrey (oblique)-Did not practice
  • WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder)-Did not practice
  • CB Isaiah Oliver (knee)-Limited
  • S George Odum (quadricep)-Full

The big three on the injury report in running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and left tackle Trent Williams all did not practice. They are all considered day-to-day and can still play on Monday night.

Saturday afternoon’s injury report will be revealing for both teams.

Vikings vs. 49ers initial injury report

The 49ers have five starters not practicing with only Ezra Cleveland fully sitting out for the Vikings

The initial injury report for the Minnesota Vikings’ Monday night matchup against the San Francisco 49ers is out and the Vikings only have four players on it.

  • LG Ezra Cleveland (foot)-Did not practice
  • CB Akayleb Evans (oblique)-Limited
  • OLB Pat Jones II (shoulder)-Limited
  • WR Jalen Nailor (hamstring)-Limited

Cleveland left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears with a mid-foot sprain. If he can’t go on Sunday, Dalton Risner will get the start.

Evans looks to have fully healed from his knee injury, but an oblique isn’t something to mess with.

Jones is a new addition with a shoulder injury. If he can’t go, Andre Carter II will likely be active.

Nailor began his practice window on Wednesday and it appears that the Vikings will be ramping him up slowly.

The 49ers have multiple players on their injury report, including five starters not practicing.

  • LG Aaron Banks (ankle)-Did not practice
  • LB Dre Greenlaw (hamstring)-Did not practice
  • RB Christian McCaffrey (oblique)-Did not practice
  • WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder)-Did not practice
  • CB Isaiah Oliver (knee)-Limited
  • S George Odum (quadricep)-Full

49ers Week 6 practice report: LG Aaron Banks limited with shoulder injury

A good sign for #49ers starting LG Aaron Banks on Wednesday’s practice participation report:

The 49ers’ first practice participation report of Week 6 had a lot of names on it, but only two for injury-related reasons.

Running back Elijah Mitchell is still out while dealing with a knee injury he suffered in a practice leading up to Week 4. He’s missed the last two games and an early non-participation isn’t a good sign for his Week 5 availability. Head coach Kyle Shanahan continues saying Mitchell is day-to-day, but early indications point to Mitchell missing a third consecutive week.

There was somewhat good news for left guard Aaron Banks who was listed as a limited participant in Wednesday’s session. He’s day-to-day with a mild shoulder strain so even a limited practice is a positive sign. Ideally he’d be a full participant, but limited work to open the week is still pointing his arrow in the right direction.

Veteran offensive lineman Jon Feliciano filled in at LG for Banks after the starter exited Sunday night’s game with what was originally feared to be a biceps injury.

Other players who showed up as non-participants were linebacker Dre Greenlaw, tight end George Kittle and left tackle Trent Williams. All three were listed as “not injury related – resting player.” They should be back Thursday.

49ers injury news: LG Aaron Banks avoids major injury in Week 5 win

The #49ers got some very good injury news on LG Aaron Banks.

The 49ers on Monday got some good injury news in the aftermath of their Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Left guard Aaron Banks exited the game early and was listed as questionable to return with what was originally thought to be a biceps injury. He never re-entered, and after the game head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed some optimism that Banks avoided a catastrophic injury to his arm.

In a conference call Monday, Shanahan confirmed that Banks avoided a major injury. He said the left guard has a mild shoulder strain and is considered day-to-day.

A biceps injury could have potentially cost Banks the rest of the 2023 season. Veteran Jon Feliciano filled in for him vs. Dallas and did a fine job. Banks has been one of San Francisco’s best offensive linemen since the start of last season though and losing him would’ve created a significant void on that unit. Not to mention Feliciano is the team’s only backup center so that would’ve made the 49ers even thinner up front.

Banks’ availability for Sunday’s game in Cleveland is still up in the air, but he won’t be out long-term which is a big win for San Francisco.

The only other update from Shanahan on the injury front was that running back Elijah Mitchell, who’s missed the last two games with a knee injury, is still day-to-day.

PFF dings 49ers OL for 2 offseason changes, 1 of which didn’t happen

The #49ers dropped 11 spots in PFF’s OL rankings thanks in part to something that didn’t happen.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

The 49ers were aiming for continuity on their offensive line this offseason, and they got it outside of Mike McGlinchey’s exit in free agency. Despite the largely similar OL they’ll roll into 2023 with, Pro Football Focus dropped the club 11 spots in its OL rankings to No. 18 overall.

While it’s not entirely unfair to have some concerns about the 49ers’ offensive line, part of the reason they fell so far was because of a move that didn’t actually happen.

Here’s PFF’s Sam Monson on the 49ers’ OL:

If it wasn’t for Trent Williams, this line would be a concerning group on paper. It still may need to lean on Kyle Shanahan’s offense to put some gloss on its performances.

San Francisco’s line ranked fifth in PFF pass-blocking efficiency over the 2022 season but lost two starters in the offseason.

That first point is mostly fine. Shanahan is very good at working around adversity on the offensive line, and all four players along the front who aren’t Williams have to take a step forward in 2023.

The second point is wrong. PFF has Jon Feliciano listed as the 49ers’ starting center, indicating that last year’s starting center, Jake Brendel, is no longer with the team.

Brendel is very much with the team. He signed a four-year, $16.5 million deal with $5 million fully guaranteed. That’s not a contract for a backup center. He’s going to start again and Feliciano will likely be the do-everything reserve along the interior.

This isn’t to say that Brendel is an All-Pro caliber center who would dramatically change the team’s ranking, but it would surely help since PFF graded Brendel as about average overall and as a run blocker, while marking him as an above average pass blocker. Brendel in his first season as a full-time starter allowed 14 pressures and one sack in 680 pass blocking snaps.

Feliciano in 649 pass blocking snaps last year with the Giants allowed 25 pressures and four sacks, while grading out below average overall and in the run game.

Ultimately the 49ers have something to prove up front. Brendel, Aaron Banks and Spencer Burford all have to make strides forward after up-and-down 2022 campaigns from each. Burford will also assume a full-time role after rotating some with Daniel Brunskill last season. Then there’s Colton McKivitz at right tackle who figures to be a full-time starter for the first time in his career. He’s a significant question mark replacing McGlinchey who was San Francisco’s second-best OL last season.

It’s fair to rank this 49ers group in the middle of the pack given some of the question marks about the long-term viability of some of their starters, but to dock them for losing two starters is to dock them for something that didn’t actually happen.

Every Notre Dame NFL draft pick since 2000

There have been 102 Notre Dame players drafted since 2000. How many more will hear their names called this week?

Notre Dame’s 21st century didn’t start the way anyone would have liked as the Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, and Charlie Weis eras all left something to be desired but the ship changed course under Brian Kelly who led the Irish back to the brink of the greatness that is expected for Notre Dame football.

Since 2000, more than 100 different Notre Dame football players have had their names called in the NFL draft.  Several others have signed as undrafted free agents but we’ll focus on those who were drafted for now.

Last year saw Kyle Hamilton and Kyren Williams have their names called.  This spring Michael Mayer and Isaiah Foskey will certainly hear theirs early, and others will join them in days two and three of the draft.

So who are the 102 who have had their names called since 2000?

Who wound up having the best careers and who didn’t have the career they or you were hoping?

You can almost certainly name plenty but there are some former Notre Dame greats you’ve likely forgotten about as well.  Here are the 102…and counting.
