Chris Tabor reveals who got the worst gift at Panthers’ white elephant party

Which Panther got the worst gift to the special teams unit’s white elephant party?

Even towards the end of what may be the most frustrating season in franchise history, the Carolina Panthers are still finding ways to enjoy the ride.

On Wednesday, interim head coach Chris Tabor was asked how he and the team have been dealing with the frustrating nature of their current 2-13 campaign. After giving a straight response to a serious question, Tabor lightened the mood with some Christmas joy.

“On Saturday morning, the special teams group had a white elephant, little party in the room,” he said. “And to watch those guys, to watch grown men for a good half hour laugh, giggle, make fun of each other, gettin’ presents—it’s a bond. That’s why this is a great team sport.

Also known as a Yankee swap or “Dirty Santa,” the white elephant gift exchange is a holiday party game in which participants deliberately swap impractical presents.

Tabor was then asked who got the worst gift.

“There was a price limit on those things,” he replied. “They asked me if I was gonna get involved, I said no ’cause I don’t spend a lot of money. But, no, there was some good gifts. Tommy [Tremble], I think he’s two years in a row where he’s kinda gotten the bad gift. So he’s improving on the field, but his white-elephant picking is terrible.”

Well, Tremble certainly is improving on the field. The third-year tight end just turned in his most productive outing yet—as he reeled in four receptions for a career-high 59 yards in this past Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.

So, perhaps he should just keep sticking to the game he’s getting quite good at.

The Panthers may have themselves a new starting right guard and a pair of exciting weapons on offense to close out the 2023 season.

Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers may have been a tough pill to swallow for the Carolina Panthers, but it resulted in a few positive steps forward.

Here are the top takeaways from the Week 16 snap counts:

Studs and duds from Panthers’ Week 16 loss to Packers

DJ Chark (doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo) did his thing in Week 16.

The Carolina Panthers gave us a Christmas Eve thrill on Sunday, nearly completing two improbable fourth-quarter comebacks on the visiting Green Bay Packers. But, it was simply not to be.

Let’s cover the studs and duds from the heartbreaking 33-30 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Biggest takeaways from Panthers’ Week 16 loss to Packers

Although it came in a heartbreaking loss, Bryce Young’s career outing was the present the Panthers have been waiting for all season.

Despite the improbable fun that ensued in the fourth quarter, the Carolina Panthers were sent to a 33-30 loss at the hands of the Green Bay Packers on Christmas Eve.

So, as we continue to deal with this heartbreaking defeat, here are a few takeaways you can stuff in your stocking:

Illness lands Brian Burns, 4 other Panthers on Wednesday’s injury report

Holiday cheer isn’t the only thing spreading around the Panthers’ locker room this week.

Also down with the sickness were tight end Tommy Tremble and safety Xavier Woods, who had been listed as limited participants. Woods is fresh off recording his team-leading second interception in this past Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Bryce Young on his clutch performance: Where else would you rather be?

There was nowhere else Bryce Young would have rather been than in Bank of America Stadium with the chance to win a football game.

It hasn’t happened many times this season, but Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young took the lectern with a smile to start his post-game press conference on Sunday.

“Ah, it feels great. It feels great,” he told reporters. “These are a lot more enjoyable after wins. Feel great.”

Well, the rookie also played great this afternoon, leading his team to a 9-7 win over the visiting Atlanta Falcons.

Carolina’s second victory of the campaign was clinched due in large part to a 17-play, 90-yard drive to run out the wet and wild contest. The possession was highlighted by three incredibly clutch completions by Young—a 19-yarder to tight end Tommy Tremble, a 20-yarder to fellow rookie Jonathan Mingo and an absolute dot of an 18-yarder to DJ Chark.

Young’s work helped set up a 23-yard field goal for kicker Eddy Piñeiro with just one second remaining, a try that went through without a hitch. The No. 1 overall pick spoke about that timely touch.

“Where else would you rather be?” Young said of the mindset to start the drive. “Opportunity to go down and win the game. For me, there’s no other group I’d rather do it with. We all have faith in each other. We all believe in each other. It was just a great opportunity.”

That opportunity added to one of Young’s cleanest outings yet. He completed 18 of his 24 throws for 167 yards and a 93.6 passer rating—the second-highest of the season.

Panthers Week 14 inactives: Vonn Bell to start vs. Saints

Panthers S Vonn Bell is returning to the lineup this afternoon in New Orleans.

Carolina Panthers safety Vonn Bell gets to play against some of his old friends today.

The eighth-year defender will be active for today’s Week 14 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Bell, who spent the first four seasons of his NFL career in New Orleans, now returns to the lineup after missing last Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a shoulder injury.

Tight end Tommy Tremble, who was also listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report, is active as well. He is currently tied for the second-most receiving touchdowns on the team (three).

Tremble and the rest of the tight ends won’t, however, be joined by Hayden Hurst—who was already ruled out due to his concussion. Hurst, per his father, was diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia and will be missing his fourth straight game.

Here’s the full list of inactives for the Panthers this afternoon:

  • CB Shaquill Griffin
  • TE Hayden Hurst
  • OT Ricky Lee
  • OLB Eku Leota
  • WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
  • S Jammie Robinson
  • DL DeShawn Williams

The Saints will be without a few key players on offense:

  • DE Isaiah Foskey
  • QB Jake Haener (emergency third QB)
  • QB Taysom Hill
  • RB Kendre Miller
  • DT P.J. Mustipher
  • LB Monty Rice

Hayden Hurst, 2 other TEs limited in practice on Thursday

Panthers TEs Hayden Hurst, Tommy Tremble and Stephen Sullivan remained limited in practice on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers remained limited at the tight end position on Thursday.

Today’s injury report ahead of Week 14’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints listed three tight ends as limited participants—Tommy Tremble (hip), Stephen Sullivan (shoulder) and Hayden Hurst (concussion).

Hurst’s father Jerry tweeted on Wednesday that his son had been diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia by an independent neurologist. The 30-year-old pass catcher, who missed the last three games, then posted this morning that his “pretty nasty” concussion is not a career-ending injury.
