49ers sign veteran TE Eric Saubert to one-year contract

The 49ers added a new face to their tight end room with the addition of a veteran free agent.

Last week, the San Francisco 49ers missed on signing tight end Brock Wright when the Detroit Lions matched the 49ers’ offer sheet for the restricted free agent. On Monday, the 49ers turned their attention back to the tight end room with the addition of a veteran free agent.

On Monday, the 49ers announced the signing of tight end Eric Saubert to a one-year contract.

In 2017, the Atlanta Falcons drafted Saubert in the fifth round out of Drake. Since being drafted by Atlanta, Saubert has bounced around the NFL, playing for nine different teams before signing with the 49ers.

Last season, Saubert was initially signed by the Miami Dolphins in the offseason. After being released by the Dolphins in August, Saubert went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before signing with the Houston Texas in late October.

In 2023, with the Cowboys and Texans, Saubert recorded three catches for 12 yards in 10 games. Saubert has 36 receptions for 292 yards and two touchdowns in 84 career games.

Saubert will round out the 49ers’ tight end depth chart behind George Kittle, which also features sophomores Brayden Willis and Cam Latu.

2 key 49ers undergo offseason surgery, expected back by camp

2 49ers All-Pros had offseason surgery, but both are expected back by training camp:

Two 49ers All-Pros had offseason surgery according to general manager John Lynch. Cornerback Charvarius Ward and tight end George Kittle both underwent core muscle surgery this offseason, with both expected back for the start of training camp per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

Ward had posted about his surgery on social media, but there was no confirmation on exactly what the surgery was. Given the location of the procedure the assumption was that he’d had a core muscle operation. Lynch on Monday confirmed that.

Kittle’s surgery wasn’t as public. It’s not a surprise the 49ers’ star tight end was banged up at the end of the year given his playing style.

It’s unclear at what point either player needed the procedure, but the good news for San Francisco is that both should be back by camp. Missing offseason time is never great, but there shouldn’t be much concern that either Ward or Kittle will be ready to play once they’re cleared and training camp starts.

Twitter reacts to George Kittle’s attempted troll of George Karalftis

George Kittle’s attempted troll of George Karlaftis cost the #49ers the ball in the #Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win.

The Kansas City Chiefs emerged as the victors in Super Bowl LVIII, and while the San Francisco 49ers were a worthy opponent, the NFC powerhouses couldn’t seem to get out of their own way.

San Francisco’s woes were encapsulated perfectly in this clip that was posted to social media this week, which shows 49ers tight end George Kittle attempting to troll Chiefs lineman George Karlaftis during a play that ended in a turnover.

Instead of giving into Kittle’s provocation, Karlaftis pounced on the ball after it was fumbled, giving Kansas City possession in the early stages of Super Bowl LVIII.

While Kittle isn’t entirely to blame for San Francisco’s loss, this clip didn’t look great, especially given his mediocre performance in the big game.

The Chiefs held Kittle to just two receptions for four yards in the Super Bowl, locking down the decorated tight end in all four quarters.

Check out what Twitter had to say about Kittle’s interaction with Karlaftis below:

Mic’d-up video shows George Kittle missing a Super Bowl loose ball because he was saying hi to the Chiefs’ George Karlaftis

Not great, George Kittle!

Oh dear.

Look, NFL opponents say hello and give respect to each other in the middle of games all the time. Of course, most of that happens after the whistle blows between plays, right?

This wasn’t the case, and it was during a fumble … in the middle of the Super Bowl.

Mic’d up video shows George Kittle blocking Kansas City Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis before letting a “Hi, George!”

Problem is: Kittle has his back to the play. So Karlaftis spies that the ball is out and the whistle hasn’t blown and jumps on it.

Not great! Here’s the video:

Super Bowl Hawkeyes: A look at George Kittle’s career through photos

One of Iowa’s favorite sons, George Kittle, represents the Hawkeyes in Super Bowl LVIII. A look at the tight ends’ career through photos.

George Kittle is one of Iowa’s favorite sons. The Iowa Hawkeyes tight end blossomed quite nicely during his time in Iowa City and has only continued to bloom as he has become one of the best tight ends in the NFL.

The San Francsico 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII and Kittle has a chance to do something very special. George Kittle has the opportunity to be the very first Iowa Hawkeye to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

From an under-recruited receiver in high school to a top tight end in the league, Kittle has had quite the journey and now finds himself on the sport’s biggest stage under the brightest lights.

As everyone gets ready for the Super Bowl, here is a look at George Kittle’s career through some of the best photos from his time with the Iowa Hawkeyes and his career in the NFL.

6 49ers props we love for Super Bowl LVIII

Looking at six different prop bets that standout in the Super Bowl between the 49ers and Chiefs.

One of the most entertaining angles of the Super Bowl is the betting aspect of the biggest game of the season.

From different player performance bets to first-quarter scores to Gatorade colors and coin tosses, there’s essentially unlimited action when it comes to the Super Bowl.

Before the big game on Sunday in Las Vegas, here’s a look at six different prop bets that standout for the 49ers.

49ers injury update: George Kittle, Arik Armstead to play in Super Bowl

It looks like George Kittle and Arik Armstead are playing in the Super Bowl:

49ers tight end George Kittle and defensive tackle Arik Armstead were limited in Thursday’s practice for the second consecutive day. Head coach Kyle Shanahan after the session though told reporters he expects both Kittle and Armstead will suit up in Super Bowl LVIII.

It makes sense the team would take it easy with two starters dealing with injury problems before the biggest game of the year. They did the same with cornerback Ambry Thomas (ankle) and linebacker Oren Burks (shoulder) with both limited Thursday as well.

Defensive tackle Kalia Davis is working to return from IR and was a full participant. He’s yet to be activated and his chances of returning for the Super Bowl appear slim, though that could change by Saturday.

A status report will be due Friday at which point we’ll get an official update on the availability of Kittle, Armstead, Thomas and Burks.

CBS looks at Super Bowl starters as recruits, George Kittle with the Iowa Hawkeyes

In another Hawkeye success story, George Kittle went from under-recruited to elite NFL tight end. CBS examined his path to the Super Bowl.

There may be no better example of the Iowa Hawkeyes’ recruiting and developmental success and than the story of San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle. He epitomizes the Iowa way of being under-recruited and overlooked but developing into a star.

He is one of the stars of the NFL as Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce pointed out. While he is a star, it didn’t come easy to Kittle. CBS Sports looked at the starters for the Chiefs and 49ers ahead of Super Bowl LVIII and how they were valued as recruits coming out of high school.

CBS utilized the 247Sports composite rankings to view each starter. George Kittle was not even ranked or recruited per those rankings as a tight end. Per the 247Sports composite, Kittle was the No. 1,519 overall recruit and the No. 199 ranked wide receiver in the class of 2012.

At 6-foot-4 and just 205 pounds, Kittle only had offers from Iowa, Air Force, Navy, and Weber State. The Hawkeyes took a chance on the Norman, Okla., native and it paid massive dividends for both sides.

While at Iowa, Kittle appeared in 25 games. He totaled 48 receptions, 737 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. A hidden gem, he wasn’t drafted until the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft when the 49ers took him with the No. 146 pick.

In the NFL, Kittle has produced massively for the 49ers. He has tallied 460 receptions, 6,742 yards, and 37 touchdowns. Kittle has been a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a two-time first-team All-Pro.

No one likes the bright lights more than George Kittle and he constantly brings his best in those moments. Expect no different on Super Bowl Sunday.
