Chiefs OC Matt Nagy compares rookie standout to Rashee Rice: ‘You see more production’

Kansas City #Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy compares Xavier Worthy to Rashee Rice: ‘You see more production’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs remain atop the NFL record-wise, largely thanks to the contributions of their young players, including rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spoke with reporters via Zoom on Sunday about Worthy reminding him of Rashee Rice’s rookie campaign last year.

“Consistently productive player confidence and the game is slowing down for him (Xavier Worthy). It reminds me so much of Rashee (Rice) last year.” Said Nagy. “It’s crazy how much it reminds me of that same type of avenue that Rashee went through last year; it was a little slow for the first four or five, six weeks, and then weeks like 7,8,9, 10. You can sense it. You might not see it in a stat book, but you can sense it as a coach.”

Worthy was productive for a second consecutive week, scoring a touchdown in the victories. He finished Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans with seven catches for 65 yards and the touchdown to lead the team.

“You can sense it from watching tape, and now all of a sudden, you naturally see more targets, you see more touches, you see more production.” Said Nagy. “It’s exactly what happened with Rashee, and I’m telling you, it’s crazy how similar it is, and it’s exciting because you see what Rashee came into this year, what he did early on, and I think that’s, that’s the path for this kid.”

Worthy’s confidence is displayed in his attack on the ball in the air, even if he accidentally disrupted a pass meant for Travis Kelce in the endzone during Saturday’s win.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans in Week 16 and rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy made major contributions to the defending Super Bowl champions’ win.

Worthy caught Patrick Mahomes’ only touchdown pass in the game and made a total of seven receptions that went for 65 yards.

The stands in Kansas City were a sea of red and Worthy took note of the support from the crowd that showed up in the cold weather to get loud for the Chiefs.

After the game, the team’s official Twitter account shared a message that Worthy recorded for Kansas City’s fans.

Chiefs vs. Texans: Rookie WR Xavier Worthy extends K.C.’s lead with impressive TD

#Chiefs rookie WR Xavier Worthy extended Kansas City’s lead over the Houston #Texans in Week 16 with this impressive touchdown reception.

The Kansas City Chiefs have an eight-point lead over the Houston Texans after a scoring drive that heavily featured rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes drove Kansas City’s offense downfield, targeting Worthy in space to chip away at Houston’s stingy defense.

When the Chiefs finally found themselves in the red zone, Mahomes looked Worthy’s way and threw him a short pass that was easily catchable near the goal line.

The former Texas Longhorn hauled the ball in and sauntered into the end zone to score.

Kansas City has dealt with injuries in its receiving corps all season, but Worthy has risen to the occasion and made the most of his increased opportunities in recent weeks.

Chiefs vs. Browns: Xavier Worthy scores rushing touchdown in Week 15

#Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy scored a 22-yard rushing touchdown in Kansas City’s Week 15 matchup against the Cleveland #Browns on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense was firing on all cylinders coming out of halftime in the defending Super Bowl champions’ Week 15 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

After being held to 14 points in the first half, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was quick to get his teammates involved on the Chiefs’ first possession of the third quarter.

Given a short field after Jameis Winston threw an interception to Nick Bolton, Mahomes put together a perfect four-play, 34-yard drive that ended in a dazzling rushing touchdown by rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Take a look at Worthy’s blazing speed as he finds the endzone in this video, which was posted to Twitter by the Chiefs’ official account:

Worthy’s touchdown padded Kansas City’s lead, and Harrison Butker converted his extra point attempt to put the Chiefs up by 21 points early in the third quarter.

Expect Mahomes to continue experimenting with ways to get Worthy the ball as the Chiefs close out the second half.

2025 NFL draft: Chiefs land blue chip Ohio State WR in expert mock

See which blue chip Ohio State WR the #Chiefs take in the first round of this mock draft from the experts at Pro Football Network.

The Kansas City Chiefs made significant investments in their receiving corps during the 2024 offseason, but injuries have depleted the group’s depth heading into Week 14.

Despite the additions of Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, Xavier Worthy, DeAndre Hopkins, and JuJu Smith-Schuster, reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes could still use another pass-catcher who can keep opposing defenses guessing.

Luckily, the Chiefs will get their chance to add another outstanding wide receiver prospect in the 2025 NFL draft.

In a mock draft released by Pro Football Network last week, Kansas City doesn’t waste any time addressing its need at the position and selects Ohio State Buckeyes wideout Emeka Egbuka to shore up the depth of its receiving corps.

Take a look at what Pro Football Network’s Lead NFL Analyst Dalton Miller had to say about his decision to send Egbuka to the Chiefs in the first round:

“What if we took JuJu Smith-Schuster and made him better in almost ever distinguishable way? You’d probably have Amon-Ra St. Brown, or a player like Emeka Egbuka as a solid middle ground.

The Ohio State receiver doesn’t quite have the big-play ability of the top pass catchers, but the detail he possesses in his route running makes him a consistent separator. Egbuka has the frame and play strength to win on the outside, but his skill set makes him even more dangerous as a primary slot option.”

Through 12 games with the Buckeyes this season, Egbuka has tallied 60 catches for 743 yards and nine touchdowns.

Kansas City is expected to be among the last teams to make a first-round selection in the 2025 NFL draft, but if Egbuka is still on the board when the Chiefs are on the clock, general manager Brett Veach will have a hard time passing on the Ohio State standout.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is critical of his Week 13 performance: ‘It’s just missed opportunities’

Kansas City #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is critical of his Week 13 performance: ‘It’s just missed opportunities’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ latest victory on Friday completed the season sweep of the Las Vegas Raiders and secured a playoff spot. However, as he explained to reporters in his postgame press conference, Patrick Mahomes couldn’t overlook some errors that dulled an otherwise eventful day for the two-time league MVP.

“It’s just missed opportunities at the end of the day. There’s going to be a lot of good – usually it’s better than you think or worse than you think, but it’s – there’s going to be a lot of good on tape,” said Mahomes. “We have to just find ways to execute. I mean, there was one (where) I hit JuJu (Smith-Schuster) coming on the cover zero blitz – I mean, I hit Trav (Travis Kelce), and JuJu was wide open probably for a touchdown.”

Mahomes completed 26-of-46 passes for 306
yards with one touchdown. It marks his 47th-career 300-yard passing performance. He remembered the missed opportunity to seal the game on offense by trying to connect on third down to rookie receiver Xavier Worthy.

“There’s the one at the end of the game with Xavier (Worthy),” said Mahomes. “If I can just give him a chance to make a catch there, we can ice it there – he goes down at the two-yard line (and) we (can) ice it. It’s just missed opportunities, and we have to execute on those opportunities if we want to get to where we want to go.”

Mahomes recorded his 238th career touchdown pass, breaking a tie with Pro Football Hall of Famer Len Dawson for the franchise record for most touchdown throws. However, the multiple-time champion has not acknowledged his accolades because he is focused on securing a three-peat.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy reacts to college teammate playing in Week 12: ‘I’m happy for him’

Kansas City #Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy reacts to Jonathon Brooks playing in Week 12: ‘I’m happy for him’ | @EdEastonJr

The Carolina Panthers welcome the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday, along with the debut of their rookie running back, Jonathon Brooks. Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, a college teammate with Brooks, shared his thoughts on the anticipated debut during Friday’s press conference.

“Yeah, that’s my guy, man,” said Worthy. “He had a hell of a college career; he just got, unfortunately, hurt, so I feel like we had him on our run in college with probably a bit different but just to see him back out there and do the things he is doing, I’m happy for him.”

The Panthers are in rebuild mode for their franchise, featuring younger talent on the field. Carolina drafted Brooks in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft out of Texas as part of the young nucleus to lead the franchise offensively alongside Bryce Young. Brooks has been recovering from a torn ACL he suffered while playing with the Longhorns last year. He rushed for 1,139 yards and ten touchdowns, teaming with Worthy during his final college season.

Chiefs rookies learned a lesson from their first regular season loss: ‘You have to dig in’

Kansas City #Chiefs rookies learned a lesson from their first regular season loss: ‘You have to dig in’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas Chiefs won’t go undefeated this season, and for many in the organization, that was never the goal. Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills highlighted some things to work on and served as a teachable moment for the rookies.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid held his weekly Zoom press conference with reporters on Monday. He opened up about the lesson his rookie class will learn from the loss to the Bills.

“You have to dig in, man. These things – these should hurt. You spend a lot of time and preparation for these games and effort and so you have to reach inside as coaches and players, not just players here. You have to figure out the problems and then work to solve them.” said Reid. “I know I have that kind of locker room, so I know the guys will do that. I know the coaches will do that, too, but you can’t just say everything’s going to be okay. That’s not how this works. You have to dig in, and it has to be – there has to be some – you have to check the ego at the door and do some self-evaluation there.”

Sunday’s game marked rookie receiver Xavier Worthy’s first score since Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders. It marked the fourth receiving touchdown and sixth total touchdown of the season. Worthy tallied four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, with his four receptions tied for a single-game career-high and his 61 yards as his second-highest single-game output this season.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals lesson learned from loss to Bills: ‘We’ve got to take care of business’

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals lesson learned from loss to the Buffalo #Bills: ‘We’ve got to take care of business’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs won’t go undefeated this year as they suffered their first loss on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters after the game, describing the first loss as a learning experience.

“Things you can learn, the main thing is that they’re a good team and, if you have a few mistakes in there, they can capitalize on them, but you keep battling, and normally good things will happen,” said Reid. “They did a nice job on that last drive, so we’ve got to take care of business on those.”

Reid pointed out another miscue on the sidelines from Xavier Worthy, which eliminated a big play from the stat sheet.

“Yeah, he’ll (Worthy) get better at those,” said Reid. “Then we’ll give the ball a little quicker as we go, so I’ve got to see it and look at it on tape and see exactly if, if he was able to drag his foot, if that was possible, if that’s the case, then he can learn from.”

Worthy was the team’s leading receiver on Sunday, so there were positives; however, Reid believes he still should have called more running plays.

“I probably could call some more runs; when it was all said and done, we had opportunities,” said Reid. “We did a pretty nice job with it, with the exception of the short yardage.”

Leading rusher Kareem Hunt had 60 yards on 14 carries, a far less workload than he’s become used to since signing with the team.
