Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman didn’t know game was over after overtime touchdown in Super Bowl

#Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman didn’t know the game was over after his overtime touchdown against the #49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Thrillingly, the Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in five seasons on Sunday. The game-winning drive late in the first overtime period was capped off with a spectacular Patrick Mahomes touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.

The exciting finish to the game was confusing for the pass recipient, as Hardman wasn’t sure if the game was over. During Hardman’s postgame interview with NFL Network, Mahomes interrupted with a hilarious revelation about the moment.

“Can I tell a quick funny story?” said Mahomes, “I threw a touchdown to this dude (Hardman) to end the game. He looked at me and had no idea, and I said dude, we just won the Super Bowl. He had no idea, and I’m like, he didn’t even celebrate in the beginning. What are we doing?”

Unlike regular season games, postseason games cannot end in a tie, so the overtime rules change slightly. According to the NFL, If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period or the second team’s initial possession has not ended, the teams will play another overtime period. Play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed for a winner to be determined.

Hardman was confused by the new postseason overtime rules that guaranteed both teams a possession in the game. “When I saw you run towards me, I was like, yeah, it’s time to celebrate now,” said Hardman, holding back laughter in the interview. The Chiefs took advantage of the 49ers being held to a field goal on their first possession, enabling the game-winning touchdown moment.

Cameron Jordan on Saints’ controversial TD vs. Falcons: ‘Say sorry we didn’t go for 50’

Cameron Jordan doesn’t see the problem with running up the score on the Falcons, much less apologizing for it: ‘Say sorry we didn’t go for 50’

The New Orleans Saints ended their season with a flourish — and then some controversy. When the second-string offense and backup quarterback Jameis Winston went rogue to get Jamaal Williams a late touchdown run over the Atlanta Falcons, Saints head coach Dennis Allen responded by apologizing to the other team for their actions.

It was a move that got him lambasted by the Saints fanbase. And one of Allen’s captains and the longest-tenured player on the team, Cameron Jordan, wants it known that he disagreed with Allen’s decision to apologize for scoring too many points on their greatest rival.

“I’m so sorry the locker room really enjoys being a brotherhood,” Jordan joked during an appearance on the Around the NFL podcast this week. “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry we punished a rival team. I would do it again. In fact, I would’ve gone for two. The only thing I’m gonna have a discrepancy with is I didn’t understand the ramifications of like, ‘No, they were taking victory formation.’ The ‘Can’tlanta Failcons’ had already acquiesced. They were just trying to get it out there just like their head coach was about to get out there.”

Already unpopular among Saints fans, Allen’s determination to take a stand and tell them to stop enjoying themselves rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Whatever goodwill he earned for his first winning season in five years as a head coach went with the wind. He has more work to do to convince the team’s supporters that he’s the right man for the job, even as general manager Mickey Loomis continues to cook up bad arguments favoring Allen.

But this isn’t going away. Jordan finished his piece with “Half of my gripe was Dennis ended up saying sorry. And I’m like why would you say sorry? Say sorry we didn’t go for 50.”

It’s unfortunate, but it makes sense that Allen still doesn’t get this rivalry. He doesn’t understand why Saints players and fans dislike the Falcons because his heart’s not in it. He was born in Atlanta as the son of former Falcons linebacker Grady Allen. He grew up and into life with Texas A&M as a student, college football player, and assistant coach; the Aggies have built an unhinged program with strange culture and ideas of sportsmanship, which has defined its relationship with its biggest in-state rival by running from the Texas Longhorns to join a new conference (only for Texas to get the jump on them anyway in the expanding SEC). The sense of rivalry and bone-deep hate isn’t in him.

And Allen’s reluctance to lean into that rivalry and engage with Saints fans (and, apparently, his own players) is going to be a storyline until something bigger happens to overshadow it. Hiring an entirely new offensive coaching staff will help. But Allen has a lot of work to do to convince fans the team he’s leading is worth lending their time and money to support. All we can do is it and see whether he can deliver.

CeeDee Lamb’s 92-yard TD vs Lions named Next Gen Stats Moment of the Year

From @ToddBrock24f7: The longest TD of the 2023 season won the first award of the night at NFL Honors in Las Vegas on Thursday night.

CeeDee Lamb was up for a major award at NFL Honors in Las Vegas Thursday night, but the Cowboys wide receiver struck early, claiming the first honor of the night.

Lamb won the Next Gen Stats Moment of the Year award for his 92-yard touchdown reception versus Detroit in Week 17.

The moment came on a 3rd-and-13, with the Dallas offense backed up on their own 8-yard-line. Prescott was nearly caught in the end zone, but scrambled away, covering 16.1 yards to find a clear spot from which to toss up what looked to be a desperate long ball.

But a streaking Lamb hauled in the throw at midfield, with the closest Lions defender already lying on the turf behind him. The wideout hit 18.4 miles an hour during his run to the end zone and traveled a total of 107.2 yards on what turned out to be the longest play from scrimmage of the NFL season.

The score was the Cowboys’ first of the evening in a game they went on to win by a a 20-19 final. Lamb ended the night with 13 catches for 227 receiving yards, both career highs in a record-setting season.

Lamb was not present to pick up his award in person, so teammate Micah Parsons accepted it on his behalf from presenter Damar Hamlin. The wide receiver was also a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year.
