2020 NFL Pro Bowl: Which Ravens should be selected

The Baltimore Ravens sit atop the NFL and with the 2020 Pro Bowl rosters to drop tonight, several players should get recognized for it.

The NFL is set to announce the 2020 Pro Bowl roster later this evening. And with the Baltimore Ravens sitting at 12-2 and leading several respective positions in fan voting, it got me wondering which players should actually make their way into the Pro Bowl this season?

Of course, the ultimate hope is Baltimore has to have all their players turn down the event as they prepare for Super Bowl LIV. But regardless, this is a golden opportunity for many players to get their very first Pro Bowl nod and for some others to continue their streak. So let’s take a look at the 13 Ravens players I believe should be selected to the 2020 Pro Bowl.

A Pro Bowl appears to be nothing more than a formality at this stage. Jackson led every NFL player in fan votes by a wide margin. And given his MVP-caliber season on top of it, Jackson not making the cut would be worthy of a headline all its own.

But just in case anyone is unsure why Jackson should get a Pro Bowl nod, Neil Dutton went through all the Ravens franchise records Jackson has already set. Add to it breaking Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record, leading the league in touchdown passes, TD% and QBR seems like good enough reasons by themselves for Jackson to get his first Pro Bowl nomination.

Ravens injuries: LT Ronnie Stanley, ILB Chris Board still in concussion protocol

The Baltimore Ravens could be without left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who missed Week 15’s game against the NY Jets in the concussion protocol

The Baltimore Ravens simply need to beat the Cleveland Browns in Week 16 and they’ll lock themselves in as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. But they could have the tall task of beating a division rival without one of their best players.

According to coach John Harbaugh, left tackle Ronnie Stanley and linebacker Chris Board are still in the concussion protocol.

Both players missed the Ravens’ Week 15 42-21 win over the New York Jets. But with Cleveland likely attempting to play spoiler over Baltimore and looking to pick up a key win to potentially save jobs, missing Stanley would be a huge blow to the Ravens’ offense.

Stanley has been playing at an insane level, stepping up his game this season. He’s allowed just six pressures and no sacks through 13 active games, something that seems almost unheard of in this era of football. Of course, Baltimore features the top-ranked rushing offense in yards, touchdowns and yards-per-carry average — something Stanley is a big portion of.

Board hasn’t played much on defense after the Ravens signed L.J. Fort and Josh Bynes in the middle of the season. However, Board has gotten a number of snaps on special teams for Baltimore. And as a key reserve inside linebacker, Board would likely be counted on if there was an injury to Bynes or Fort.

With such a key game upcoming and with the playoffs looming in the future, the Ravens have an interesting question to ask themselves. While few teams have a chance to sit their players to rest up before the postseason, Baltimore might look to be extra cautious with Stanley returning in these final two games. But with a full week before the Ravens have to suit up against the Browns, there’s plenty of time for Stanley and Board to get healthy and back into the lineup.

Irish in the NFL: Ronnie Stanley Key in Lamar Jackson’s MVP Caliber Season

Not only has Stanley not allowed a sack through fifteen games but he’s only allowed his quarterback to be pressured six times all season.

When you hear about Notre Dame players in the NFL you usually hear first about offensive linemen and then about tight ends. Or first about tight ends and then about those on the o-line.

When discussing the linemen, Quenton Nelson is seemingly always the first player brought up because he’s downright nasty and has the attitude that matches his play.

He’s not the only dominating offensive lineman from Notre Dame in the pros this year, however. And in fact, he might not even be the best Notre Dame lineman in the pros this season.

That title may just deserve to go to former Irish star and current Baltimore Raven, Ronnie Stanley.

Pro Football Focus did a fine job breaking down his play this season after Thursday night’s dominating win over the New York Jets.

Not only has Stanley not allowed a sack through fifteen games but he’s only allowed his quarterback to be pressured six times all season.

Yes, against the best pass rushers in the world Stanley has not only held his own but entirely dominated.

Listen, Lamar Jackson is lights-out on the field and easily the NFL MVP this season. He would probably still be more than just passable even behind an average or so offensive line.

It’s worth praising Stanley however for having his young quarterback’s back, literally, and helping to create one of the most memorable years we’ve ever witnessed by an NFL quarterback.

Ravens vs. Jets Week 15 inactives: TE Mark Andrews active, T Ronnie Stanley out

The Baltimore Ravens will have to battle the New York Jets without left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who is out with an injury.

The Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets come into Week 15 with very little time to get healthy. Playing on Thursday night, it gave both teams just a few days to get everyone prepared for another football game and this late in the season, those bumps and bruises have started to accumulate.

However, the Ravens come into this one actually fairly well off. In spite of big names like tight end Mark Andrews and quarterback Lamar Jackson not guaranteed to play tonight, both are active. But the offense will have to function without left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who was listed as “doubtful” on Wednesday’s injury report.

Jets injury report: Ryan Griffin, Brian Poole among 4 ruled out vs. Ravens

The Jets have officially ruled out four players for Thursday’s game, while four others are listed as doubtful.

The Jets will go into their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Baltimore Ravens with few healthy bodies.

New York has ruled out TE Ryan Griffin (ankle), CB Brian Poole (concussion), OT Chuma Edoga (knee) and RB Bilal Powell (ankle/illness).

In addition, S Jamal Adams (ankle), DL Quinenn Williams (neck), CB Arthur Maulet (calf) and WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) are all listed as doubtful and unlikely to play. DL Henry Anderson (shoulder), OT Kelvin Beachum (ankles), S Matthias Farley (ankle), DL Steve McLendon (knee/hip), RB Ty Montgomery (foot/hip) and DL Nathan Shepherd (ankle) are all questionable but will need to suit up because the Jets already likely have eight players who will not be able to play.

The Jets need to dress 46 of 53 players for Thursday’s contest. They can make seven players inactive, but eight will be out injured. It is likely that New York will have to elevate a player from its practice squad before Thursday night.

The Jets already placed rookie UDFA CB Kyron Brown (quad) on injured reserve this week and elevated UDFA WR Jeff Smith from the practice squad with Thomas ailing.

TE Daniel Brown, WR Vyncint Smith and Shepherd must step into bigger roles on Thursday, while Le’Veon Bell will have to return from his bout with the flu and make an immediate impact. With Powell out and Montgomery banged up, it will most likely be Bell with some Josh Adams sprinkled in.

As far as Baltimore, LB Chris Beard (concussion) is out, while OT Ronnie Stanley (concussion) is doubtful. In addition, QB Lamar Jackson (quad), Mark Andrews (knee), S Anthony Levine Sr. (ankle) and DE Jihad Ward (elbow) are all listed as questionable but expected to play.

But hardly anyone expected former Miami Dolphins signal-caller Ryan Tannehill to accomplish what he has in Nashville after taking the reins in the third quarter of a shutout loss the Denver Broncos.

So it comes as no surprise that he’s been recognized as one of the NFL’s must underrated players.

Baltimore Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley and Denver Broncos free safety Justin Simmons also made the list.

Since Tannehill has taken over, he’s completed 128-of-176 passing for 1,602 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.

He also had a solid game in last week’s 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts, delivering on 17-of-22 pass attempts for 182 yards for two touchdowns, and took care of the football, finishing the contest without an interception.

Tannehill and the Titans will look to extended their winning streak to four games as they face the Oakland Raiders at 3:25 p.m. CT on Sunday in Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Irish in the NFL: Boykin Shines Again in LA Coliseum

Boykin caught 77 passes and 11 touchdowns at Notre Dame but I’ll always remember this block before anything else he did in blue and gold.

With the Baltimore Ravens playing on and owning Monday Night Football this week it meant for a chance for the nation to get a closeup of MVP-frontrunner, Lamar Jackson.  Before we get to the Notre Dame connection to this game let me just say that his meteoric rise to super-stardom makes me incredibly happy to be wrong about what he might be able to do in the NFL.

He’s not only the most exciting player going this season but he’s also got to be the favorite to win the MVP award after doing what he did to the Patriots a couple weeks ago on Sunday Night Football and again for his five touchdown passes and complete domination of the Rams on Monday Night Football.

Now to the Notre Dame side of this game:

Miles Boykin must have a thing for the Los Angeles Coliseum.  In last year’s regular season finale you may remember what he did to spring Tony Jones, Jr. to the end zone to clinch a 12-0 regular season.

Boykin caught 77 passes and 11 touchdowns at Notre Dame but I’ll always remember this block before anything else he did in blue and gold.

Well, Boykin was at it again Monday night as the Ravens embarrassed the reigning NFC Champs on their home field, 45-6.

It may have been out of hand at this point but its remarkable to me how Boykin’s highlight catch tonight occurs in almost the exact same spot as his block, nearly exactly a year to the day, that sent the Fighting Irish to their first College Football Playoff appearance. (Shoutout to Austin Hough of The Goshen News for pointing that out to me on Twitter).

I also wouldn’t be doing my proper work if I didn’t send mad-praise the way of Ronnie Stanley who has been an absolute monster for the Ravens and is a huge reason their downright nasty rushing attack works as well as it does.

The Ravens now sit at 9-2 on the season and atop the AFC North standings.  Along with Boykin and Stanley, former Notre Dame corner back Bennett Jackson, Jr. is also currently on the Ravens roster.

Ravens vs. Rams: Who’s playing and who isn’t

The Baltimore Ravens seem like they’ll be without defensive tackle Michael Pierce for Week 12 against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Baltimore Ravens get yet another tough test again this week as they’ll travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in Week 12. Playing on Monday Night Football, this could be the chance for Baltimore to finally prove to the few remaining critics just how good they actually are. But the Ravens could be a little shorthanded this week.

Defensive tackle Michael Pierce is listed as doubtful and even that seems optimistic. Pierce missed Friday and Saturday’s practices after being listed as limited on Thursday. Coach John Harbaugh said Pierce is unlikely to play this week as he still recovers from an ankle injury suffered against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 10, according to Aaron Kasinitz of Penn Live.

While wide receiver Chris Moore, guard Ben Powers and tackle Ronnie Stanley are all listed as questionable, all three were full participants on Saturday meaning they’ll likely be able to play Monday night.

6 Ravens who should go to their first Pro Bowl in 2020

While football is a team sport, several Ravens players have been playing at a high level. It might earn these six their first Pro Bowl nods.

The Baltimore Ravens are having a great season. They sit at 7-2 and have defeated some of the best teams in the NFL to get there. With a quarterback that is hot on the MVP trail, an offense that is seemingly too tough to defend and a defense that is improving rapidly every week, Baltimore looks like they’ll be going far this season.

For as much as football is a team sport, there are a bunch of individual Ravens players having stellar years that deserve to be recognized. With such a young roster, plenty of them have yet to get the notoriety on a national stage, but we’re here to fix that.

These six players very well could have earned their first Pro Bowl nominations with their play this season. Of course, you can always help by voting for your favorite Ravens players.

We start off with the guy in the mix for the NFL’s MVP award. If Jackson doesn’t get a Pro Bowl nod this season, the league might just have to do away with the whole game.

Forget about the stats — though there are plenty to use as reasoning for Jackson to be in the Pro Bowl. Jackson has been electric on the field this season, both with his legs and arm. He’s made Pro Bowl players tackle thin air and he’s torched some solid secondaries. The NFL’s all-star game is supposed to highlight the best and most exciting players, and Jackson is the epitome.
