Every move the Ravens have made so far this offseason

With the 2024 NFL Draft fast approaching, we’re looking at every move the Baltimore Ravens have made this off-season

The Ravens will look drastically different on both sides of the football field after undergoing massive changes in player personnel and the coaching staff.

Baltimore signed Justin Madubuike, one of the league’s best defensive linemen, to an extension. After inking Madubuike to a deal, Baltimore landed Derrick Henry for two years and $16 million.

However, the Ravens suffered significant free-agent losses.

Patrick Queen (Steelers), Geno Stone (Bengals), and Gus Edwards (Chargers) were among eight free agents to sign elsewhere. Baltimore also traded Morgan Moses to the Jets and released Tyus Bowser in a cost-cutting move.

John Harbaugh excited to have Chris Board back with Ravens

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is excited to have inside linebacker Chris Board back with the team

The Baltimore Ravens have valued special teams heavily since hiring head coach John Harbaugh in 2008. A former special teams coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, Harbaugh has brought that mindset to Baltimore.

The 16-year head coaching veteran has shaped the Ravens into one of the most consistent special teams units in the NFL, with the players he brings in being a part of that equation. Inside linebacker Chris Board is one of those players, and after a few years away from Baltimore, he’s officially back with the team.

Harbaugh couldn’t contain his excitement about what appears to be one of his favorite special teams players. The Board spent the past two years in Detroit and New England, respectively, and is now on track to be a leader with the Ravens again.

With the second wave of free agency heating up and updated signings, we’re releasing the Ravens 15 biggest salary cap hits according to Over The Cap.

Change is always good for the soul, and after a stunning loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game, Baltimore has undergone a dramatic reconstruction that could pay off with championship dividends.

Changes hit the defensive coaching staff as Mike Macdonald accepted the Seahawks head coaching job, Anthony Weaver became the defensive coordinator in Miami, and Zach Orr was promoted from inside linebackers coach to defensive coordinator.

Ravens to sign LB Chris Board to a deal

The Baltimore Ravens are signing veteran linebacker Chris Board to a one-year deal

The Ravens are returning a familiar face to the Under Armour Performance Center, agreeing to a one-year deal with inside linebacker Chris Board.

Board originally signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent 2018 out of North Dakota State.

Board signed a two-year contract with New England last offseason but was released last week. The 28-year-old saw action strictly on special teams last season, recording ten combined tackles in 17 games.

Board spent the 2022 season with the Lions, appearing in all 17 games and recording 21 tackles (17 solo) while playing primarily on special teams.

Report: Patriots planning to release veteran special-teamer

It’s a one-and-done run for Chris Board in New England

The New England Patriots are planning to release special-teams star Chris Board. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news on Monday morning.

Board, who also played the linebacker position during his time in New England, recorded 10 tackles in 2023.

He played in all 17 games for the Patriots after signing with the team as an unrestricted free agent from the Detroit Lions last year. He initially broke into the league with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018.

This latest move marks what has been a busy couple of days for the Patriots’ organization. They are tinkering with their roster in preparation for free agency week and the official start to the expected rebuild in New England.

It is sure to be a busy week for the Patriots with the legal tampering period beginning on Monday and free agency starting on Wednesday. New England has a chance to reshape their roster as a new era of football under coach Jerod Mayo begins.

Matthew Slater gave high praise for this new special teams addition

Chris Board is a name Patriots fans should be excited about, and special teams legend Matthew Slater recently explained why.

New England Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater has high praise for one of New England’s newest additions this offseason.

Slater believes linebacker and special-teams player Chris Board will be able to make an impact. Board signed with the Patriots in March, after spending the 2022 season with the Detroit Lions. He has 115 tackles in his career, but he has been able to prove his value as a special teams standout.

Coach Bill Belichick gave him praise last season, before the Patriots took on the Lions in October. The coach went so far as to call him the best special teams player the Patriots would face all year.

Now, Slater is echoing that sentiment, after seeing Board up close in training camp. The veteran indicated several factors that has made Board successful so far.

“Yeah, and I would echo that,” Slater said, via NESN.com’s Dakota Randall. “It’s been awesome. I think his attitude, his professionalism, his desire to do everything perfect every day has been really impressive to me. He’s so detail-oriented when it comes to the kicking game, it’s really no mystery to me now why he’s been so successful.”

It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Board makes both at the linebacker position and on special teams. Belichick loves versatile players that can make an impact right out of the gates.

From the sounds of it, Board is doing exactly that.

Ex-Lions LB Chris Board signs with Patriots

Board was a special teams fixture in his one year in Detroit

Linebacker Chris Board is leaving Detroit after signing a two-year, $6.7 million deal with the New England Patriots.

He was an integral part of Detroit’s special teams unit, taking more snaps in that phase than any other player on the team, and provided much-needed depth at off-ball linebacker for the 2022 season.

Board, 27, signed a one-year deal with the Lions last offseason.

This is quite the payday compared to the $1.99 million he made in Detroit, proving how valuable the special teams unit is to the Patriots.

He appeared in all 17 games for the Lions, receding 21 tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass defense.

Report: Patriots, LB Chris Board agree on two-year deal

The Patriots made a major upgrade on special teams.

The New England Patriots continued to make a splash in free agency on Friday with the reported signing of former Detroit Lions core special-teamer Chris Board, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

It’s a two-year deal worth upwards of $6.67 million. No, this isn’t news that’s going to excite the people still waiting for the Patriots to trade for or sign an elite receiver.

But this was a much-needed move to help bolster the team’s special teams unit. Board has been incredibly successful as a special-teamer, and he even elicited hefty praise from coach Bill Belichick last season. As Reiss notes, Belichick called him the “best special teams player New England would face.”

For a team that struggled on special teams throughout the 2022 season, this is a solid addition to the roster.

Board spent the last season with the Lions after playing with the Baltimore Ravens in his previous four years. Now, he’ll have an opportunity to help turn things around for a Patriots team looking to bounce back in 2023.

Stay or go: Predicting the fate of the Lions free agents in 2023

Here’s an early prediction for the fates of all the Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents

The onset of NFL free agency is a little over a month away. The Detroit Lions have 18 pending unrestricted free agents as the team enters the new league year.

Who will stay in Detroit? Which ones will be playing elsewhere in 2023?

Here’s an early prediction for the fates of all 18 Lions’ unrestricted free agents.

Snap count notes: Lions shuffled the deck vs. the Cowboys

Amani Oruwariye went from healthy scratch to iron man, while Josh Paschal and Aidan Hutchinson played very high numbers

Sunday’s 24-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys was a frustrating afternoon for the Detroit Lions and the long-suffering fan base. The Lions did at least try to change things up personnel-wise in Dallas.

Some of the changes were forced by injuries, and those are prominently reflected in the snap counts. Take wide receiver, where top wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown was forced from the game after just 10 snaps due to concussion protocols. St. Brown rarely leaves the field when healthy.

With fellow starter Josh Reynolds limited with a knee injury, Kalif Raymond topped all Lions WRs in snaps. Raymond played on 53 of the team’s 60 offensive reps. Reynolds played 47, while Tom Kennedy saw 30.

The starting offensive line played the entire game together, with Evan Brown staying put at right guard. Dan Skipper saw eight reps as an extra tackle. Rookie TE James Mitchell played six snaps, the most he’s seen all season. Mitchell has yet to draw a passing target in three games.

On defense, the rookies played extensively. Safety Kerby Joseph was one of two iron men who played all 63 snaps, joined by CB Amani Oruwariye, who was a healthy scratch in the last Lions game. Aidan Hutchinson played 56, a very high figure for a pass rusher.

Rookie DT Josh Paschal was on the field for 56 as well in his NFL debut. With Michael Brockers a healthy scratch, the Lions’ intentions with Paschal were obvious. John Cominsky returned from his wrist surgery to play just 10.

Cornerback Jerry Jacobs was only on the field for one play in his 2022 debut, and he was flagged for pass interference on the rep. Tough start for No. 39 in his return from knee surgery. Linebacker Chris Board, who had been on the field for about 25 percent of defensive snaps this season, only played on special teams vs. Dallas.
