Ravens to sign CB Arthur Maulet to a 2-year deal

The Baltimore Ravens are re-signing cornerback Arthur Maulet to a two-year free agent deal

Cameron Wolfe reports that the Ravens retained one of their free agents after agreeing to a two-year deal with cornerback Arthur Maulet.

Maulet signed with Baltimore after spending two years with the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

Last season, Maulet played in 14 games and logged 37 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and five passes defended.

The 30-year-old Maulet will compete with Ar’Darius Washington for the slot cornerback role.

4 under the radar free agents that fit the Lions well

Four free agents who fit the Lions needs, playing style and budget for the positions they play

The free agent period begins soon in the NFL. While it officially doesn’t fire up until mid-March, the NFL Scouting Combine typically marks when teams and agents really begin earnestly courting one another in free agency, too.

The Detroit Lions figure to be net spenders in free agency once again. That’s as much of a function of not being scheduled to lose any critical or high-priced free agents of their own, but also banking on GM Brad Holmes being a man of his word on adding more talent to the Lions.

In his year-ending press conference, Holmes talked about being smart in free agency. Being prudent in finding value in free agency will be an emphasis, and that means finding players who fit the Lions well but might not necessarily carry the league-wide demand or big-name appeal to drive the price tag up.

Holmes and the Lions have done a good job finding players like this, including OL Graham Glasgow (now a free agent himself), WR Kalif Raymond, RB David Montgomery, DL John Cominsky, LB Alex Anzalone and more.

Here are four names who could fit that value bill for the Lions and Holmes in the upcoming free agent period in 2024.

7 Saints free agents targets to watch in Ravens vs. Chiefs

There are plenty of Saints free agents targets to watch in Ravens vs. Chiefs. Which of these players could come to New Orleans in 2024?

There are a handful of former Kansas City Chiefs players playing key roles for the New Orleans Saints — starting safety Tyrann Mathieu, of course, but also his former Chiefs teammates Khalen Saunders and Tanoh Kpassagnon along the defensive line. Could more of them be wearing black and gold in 2024?

Saints fans should tune into Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens to get an early look at the upcoming free agent class. Both teams could lose players in the spring, and opportunistic squads like the Saints could pounce. Here are some pending free agents from both sides who may fit what the Saints are looking for this offseason:

As the playoffs heat up with the conference championship gets set for this weekend, the Indianapolis Colts will see a handful of former players taking part in the big games.

By our count, 10 former players across three of the teams donned the horseshoe at one point regardless of whether they were an early draft pick or a player on the practice squad.

Here’s a look at 10 former Colts players who are on the AFC and NFC Championship rosters:

Ravens CB Damarion Williams to be activated off injured reserve

Ravens’ CB Damarion Williams to be activated off injured reserve

During his Monday press conference, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced that second-year cornerback Damarion Williams will be activated off injured reserve.

The 2022 fourth-round pick has been on injured reserve since ankle surgery in August. The Ravens have gotten by with solid play from their other cornerbacks this season, but Williams’ return would give them some extra depth at the position, most notably in the slot.

Williams returned to the practice field on November 21, beginning his 21-day window before he could be activated to the 53-man roster.

Baltimore has used a combination of defenders in the slot this season, with second-year safety Kyle Hamilton and veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet seeing the most snaps at the position. With Hamilton potentially missing time with a grade 1 MCL sprain suffered in the victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14, the Ravens could use the depth behind Maulet as they prepare to face a stretch of high-powered offenses to finish the regular season.

Williams was drafted out of Houston with the No. 141 pick in the fourth round by Baltimore in 2022. He played in 14 games as a rookie, totaling 24 tackles and two passes defended, though his role diminished as the season progressed and Hamilton became the primary slot defender.

Damarion “Pepe” Williams returns to Ravens’ practice

Ravens open up 21 day practice window for Damarion ‘Pepe’ Williams

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Tuesday that defensive back Damarion “Pepe” Williams has been designated to return from injured reserve and returned to practice.

The second-year defensive back was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury that sidelined him for most of the off-season activities. Williams will bring depth to the slot corner position first and foremost, where the Ravens have used a combination of players this season, including veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet and second-year safety Kyle Hamilton, to much success.

Baltimore drafted Williams with the No. 141 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Houston cornerback immediately saw playing time in his rookie season for the Ravens, though he saw less and less time on the field as the year went on. Williams finished his first NFL season with 24 total tackles and two passes defended in 14 games.

It is unclear how much playing time Williams could see this season with the amount of quality depth Baltimore currently has at the cornerback position with Marlon Humphrey, Brandon Stephens, Ronald Darby, Arthur Maulet, Rock Ya-Sin, and fellow 2022 draft mate Jayln Armour-Davis.

Still, cornerback is a position that can thin out quickly due to injuries throughout an NFL season, so getting a promising player like Williams back into the fold as a potential option, if need be, on game days is beneficial.

Jaguars reportedly showed interest in free agent CB Arthur Maulet

The Jaguars reportedly kicked the tires on veteran slot corner Arthur Maulet, who became a free agent in May.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of two teams, along with the Chicago Bears, that recently inquired about free agent cornerback Arthur Maulet, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Maulet, 30, most recently spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before requesting his release in May due to a contract dispute. Prior to that he spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and New York Jets.

The veteran cornerback has spent the majority of his career playing out of the slot, which is an area where the Jaguars may need help.

Last year, Jacksonville signed free agent Darious Williams to fill that void, but found late in the season that he was a much more effective player after moving outside. For now, veteran Tre Herndon III is seemingly the favorite to be the Jaguars’ top slot cornerback with rookie draft picks Antonio Johnson, Erick Hallett, and Christian Braswell also in the mix.

Maulet has played in 68 career games through six seasons with 20 starts. He has three career interceptions, two forced fumbles, three sacks, and 12 tackles for loss.

Steelers sign former Jets S Arthur Maulet

The Steelers are starting to round out their offseason roster with the addition of Arthur Maulet.

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced the signing of safety Arthur Maulet to a one-year deal.

Maulet, who played collegiate ball at Memphis, bounced around the league since going undrafted in 2017. He’s played with the Saints, Colts and Jets and recorded 83 tackles, two sacks, seven defended passes, two interceptions and a recovered fumble in 34 games (12 starts).

Heading into training camp this summer, Maulet will join rookie safety Tre Norwood at the bottom of the defensive backs depth chart.

11 notable Jets who could be playing their last game with New York in Week 17

Jets Wire takes a look at 11 notable Jets players who could be playing their last game with New York on Sunday in New England.

As the Jets enter their 2020 season finale, several notable players could be playing their final game for the team.

Nothing is a given, but it’s likely that the team with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft is headed toward another roster overhaul. While some players’ futures seem more certain than others, there is still a lot of decision making to be made between now and the beginning of March.

With that said, let’s take a look at some notable active players who might be playing their last game with New York in Week 17 against the New England Patriots.

Jets injury report: Sam Darnold out for Week 6, Denzel Mims back at practice

As for Wednesday’s Jets injury updates, Adam Gase ruled out QB Sam Darnold for Week 6, while rookie WR Denzel Mims returned to practice.

As the Jets get ready to take on the Dolphins in Week 6, they will again be without their starting quarterback. On Wedneday, Adam Gase ruled out Sam Darnold (right shoulder) for Sunday’s game and named Joe Flacco the starter again.

On the other hand, Denzel Mims (hamstring) returned to practice. Gase was non-committal on whether the rookie wide receiver will come off injured reserve for Sunday. Still, Mims has been itching at getting back on the field and has an outside chance at playing vs. the Dolphins, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.

Both of the Jets’ starters on the left side of the offensive line — Mekhi Becton and Alex Lewis — will not practice Wednesday, as both are dealing with shoulder injuries. Lewis will be limited going forward but should be good to go for Sunday. As for Becton, the Jets haven’t provided much of an update, but it was reported on CBS’s Broadcast in Week 5 that he was dealing with a capsule injury in his shoulder.

CB Bless Austin, WR Breshad Perriman and DL Quinnen Williams were all limited during practice.

The Jets designated Mims, CB Arthur Maulet (groin) and OL Cameron Clark (shoulder/knee) to return to practice; they will have 21 days to activate these three players from injured reserve. New York also signed DL Tanzel Smart and K/P Sergio Castillo to its practice squad and released WR Donte Moncrief from the practice squad.
