Compensation updates for Isaiah Oliver, Chuck Clark, Kenny Yeboah, Jake Hanson

Compensation updates for Isaiah Oliver, Chuck Clark, Kenny Yeboah, Jake Hanson

Thanks to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, we have dollar figures for a handful of recent signings for the New York Jets.

The Jets gave one-contracts to the following players:

CB Isaiah Oliver
Safety Chuck Clark
TE Kenny Yeboah
OG Jake Hanson

The total compensation for all four players is only about $6 million. Here are those figures:

Oliver: $2.5 million ($2.2 million guaranteed)
Clark: $2 million ($705,000 guaranteed)
Yeboah: $1.4 million ($225,000 guaranteed)
Hanson: $1.1 million ($45,000 guaranteed)

With those deals now included, Over the Cap has the Jets sitting at about $22 million in cap space. Keep in mind, this is still without the numbers for Tyron Smith and Tyrod Taylor, so that number will change very soon.

In need of safety help, Jets reportedly re-sign Chuck Clark

In dire need of safety help, the New York Jets reportedly re-signed Chuck Clark, who missed all of the 2023 season with an ACL injury.

In dire need of safety help, the New York Jets are reportedly re-signing Chuck Clark to a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It was last offseason when the Jets traded for Clark, sending a seventh-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately, Clark never saw the field during the regular season, suffering a season-ending ACL injury in June.

Clark is a former sixth-round pick by Baltimore in 2017 and had spent his entire career with the Ravens up until being traded to the Jets.

Clark has played the bulk of his career either lined up as a traditional free safety or playing in the box. He’s been a very sound tackler throughout his career, missing less than nine percent of his total tackle attempts, and over the last couple seasons, he has been one of the higher-graded run defense safeties by PFF’s metrics.

In coverage with the Ravens, Clark was asked to fill the centerfield-like role, tasked with covering a lot of ground while also handling a lot of the underneath responsibilities and limiting yards after the catch. He came away with two interceptions and eight pass breakups during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Clark now joins Tony Adams as the only safeties on the Jets’ roster at the moment, so they certainly are not done addressing this need.

As I discussed in a recent article, this could be a position where we see Joe Douglas double-dip in free agency, making not just one impact addition but perhaps two.

For one, as already mentioned, it’s still a big need, with only two players now on the roster. On top of that, this year’s draft class at the safety position I would categorize as so-so, not to mention that teams don’t often find immediate high-level impact in the draft at this position.

In free agency, however, this is a group that is loaded with talent and could come with a “depressed” market, as The Athletic’s Dianna Russini recently put it, resulting in more team-friendly deals.

It hasn’t yet been reported what the contract details are around Clark’s one-year deal, but the Jets began the day with $20.7 million in cap space, according to Over the Cap’s projections. For more on the Jets’ cap situation, click here.

The 2023 season was the final year of a three-year deal for Clark, who came with a cap hit of $4.14 million. Coming off an injury, Clark’s cap hit this season will presumably be less than the previous year’s amount.

Jets place Chuck Clark, Diontae Spencer on injured reserve

Clark and Spencer to IR

Among the moves before camp opens up, the Jets places safety Chuck Clark and wide receiver Diontae Spencer on injured reserve Wednesday, ending their seasons, unless they come to an injury settlement.

Clark was acquired from the Ravens back in March to help replace Lamarcus Joyner but he suffered an ACL injury during the offseason program. That led to the Jets signing former Packers safety Adrian Amos.

Spencer’s injury was unclear initially. He was off an on the Jets’ practice squad during the 2022 season after spending time with the Broncos and Rams. He signed a reserve/future contract in January.

Torn ACL confirmed for Jets safety Chuck Clark

Very unfortunate for Chuck Clark

Jets safety Chuck Clark has a torn ACL, tests confirmed as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, ending Clark’s season.

The worry that Clark might have suffered a serious injury led to the Jets signing former Packers safety Adrian Amos, who will now step into the starting lineup with Jordan Whitehead. Tony Adams will be among the top reserves for the Jets.

The Jets acquired Clark via trade from the Baltimore Ravens back in March for a 7th round pick in 2024. Clark was a very durable player over  his first six NFL seasons, missing only one game.

Chuck Clark believed to have suffered serious knee injury

Very unfortunate news for Clark, if true

The Jets may have been dealt a blow at the safety position that may have helped spurn the signing of Adrian Amos.

Per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, safety Chuck Clark is believed to have suffered a serious knee injury. Connor Hughes of SNY also reports Clark is getting a second opinion but “it doesn’t look great now.”

The Jets acquired Clark from the Baltimore Ravens back in March for a 7th-round pick in 2024. Clark was expected to start in the defensive backfield alongside Jordan Whitehead, who recently restructured his contract. That spot now likely belongs to Amos, as the injury to Clark likely helped spark the Jets’ interest in the former Packer.

Rosenblatt reports the Jets weren’t looking at Amos until recently but that the opportunity to start in New York was key for Amos. He’ll now get that opportunity with Clark potentially done, at least for a while, though no official word has come through as of Tuesday evening.

This is a very unfortunate break for the Jets. Clark was a very good acquisition to help retool what was arguably the weakest spot on the defense last season. The signing of Amos will help soften the blow a bit, but Clark had been making quite the impression on the team.

If Clark is indeed out, the safety group would be Whitehead, Amos, Ashtyn Davis, Tony Adams, Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Trey Dean.

Ravens agree to contract with S Geno Stone

The Ravens agreed to a contract with safety Geno Stone

The Baltimore Ravens haven’t made many moves over the course of the 2023 offseason. They haven’t added any outside free agents, and have seen multiple of their own players walk for new opportunities. However, Baltimore agreed to re-sign one of their key contributors on Thursday.

The Ravens signed fourth-year safety Geno Stone to a contract after deciding not to tender him as a restricted free agent earlier in the week. The move came just a day after their trade with the New York Jets to send veteran safety Chuck Clark to the Big Apple was finalized, and should help shore up the depth in their secondary in 2023.

Stone was a seventh-round pick by the Ravens in the 2020 NFL draft, and has made a name for himself as a rock-solid contributor in Baltimore’s defensive backfield. He should be expected to take on an expanded role in the team’s defense next season after putting together an impressive 2022 campaign.

While this deal is effectively a re-signing by the Ravens, it is an indication that the team is actively looking to add talent in free agency, even if only by not losing players who took the field for them last season. Baltimore has been eerily quiet on the free agent market while they seek to sign quarterback Lamar Jackson to a long-term deal, but their decision to keep Stone around should bode well for their chances of signing other difference makers in the coming days.

Ravens finalize Chuck Clark trade with Jets on Wednesday

The Ravens finalized their trade with the Jets that will send veteran safety Chuck Clark to New York for the 2023 season

The Baltimore Ravens have plenty of work to do on their roster as they look to improve their team ahead of the 2023 season. They haven’t made many moves yet, but there is still time to add at key positions to strengthen holes at needs across the board.

The Ravens finalized their trade agreement with the New York Jets on Wednesday, officially clearing the way for veteran safety Chuck Clark to play in the Big Apple next season. Baltimore’s official trade announcement says their compensation will be an undisclosed draft pick, but the reports were that the selection will be a 2024 7th-round pick.

Baltimore commemorated the move with a video released on social media that thanked Clark for his time with the Ravens, which is sure to pull at the heartstrings of many fans who are sad to see the veteran safety depart from the Charm City.

Clark was a sixth-round pick by the Ravens in the 2017 draft and served the team well in his six seasons with the team, starting in 63 games and racking up nearly 400 combined tackles. It is unclear who the team might sign to replace him, or if they will opt to give one of the safeties currently on the roster a shot to fill his role in 2023.

Jets officially announce Chuck Clark trade

Jets officially announce Chuck Clark trade

With the league year officially beginning Wednesday afternoon, teams were able to officially announce any moves that were reported prior to Wednesday. The Jets did just that with one of their moves, the acquisition of safety Chuck Clark from the Baltimore Ravens.

The Jets are sending a 7th-round pick in 2024 back to Baltimore as compensation.

Clark is entering his 7th season in the NFL. He played in all 17 games last season, recording 101 tackles and four passes defended. He has played in all but two games since coming into the league in 2017 as a 6th-round pick out of Virginia Tech.

Clark will make about $4.1 million in what is the final year of a three-year contract extension he signed with the Ravens back in 2020. He will essentially replace Lamarcus Joyner in the lineup.

Grading the Ravens’ trade of S Chuck Clark to the Jets

We grade the Ravens’ trade of safety Chuck Clark to the New York Jets

The Baltimore Ravens sent away one of the key members of their defense on Thursday, trading safety Chuck Clark to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round pick. The move didn’t come as much of a surprise, as the team both signed Marcus Williams and drafted Kyle Hamilton last offseason while Clark requested a trade.

Clark was a sixth-round selection of Baltimore in the 2017 draft, and worked his way up to be a key member of their defense. He was a solid and steady contributor, accumulating 384 total tackles, five interceptions and 3.5 sacks during his six years with the Ravens.

In moving on from Clark, Baltimore will free up room in their secondary for Hamilton, who played a key role for the team during the 2022 season. The Ravens used the rookie all over the field, but Clark’s departure should open up more opportunities for the former Notre Dame star.

Baltimore saves around $4.14 million with the trade of Clark, something that’s much needed after franchise-tagging quarterback Lamar Jackson and incurring a $32.4 million cap hit, at least for the time being. While it would have been nice to get more for Clark in terms of draft compensation, the Ravens likely would have cut the safety anyway, so getting something back instead of nothing was a win in itself.

Ravens trade S Chuck Clark to Jets

The Ravens have agreed to trade safety Chuck Clark to the Jets

The Baltimore Ravens are looking at plenty of roster changes as the 2023 offseason rolls along. They will almost certainly need to either restructure, extend, cut or trade a few of their contributors from 2022 in order to get under the cap, which is what they did on Thursday

Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the news that the Baltimore is trading safety Chuck Clark to the New York Jets for a 2024 seventh-round pick.  The move will help out the Ravens from a salary cap perspective as they need as much money as possible to make moves, but they lose one of their most consistent contributors on defense.

The trade can’t be made official until Wednesday, March 15th, when the new league year starts, but the trade has been agreed upon. Without Clark on the defense, it seems like second-year safety Kyle Hamilton will be thrust into a bigger role moving forward.

Clark, a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft out of Virginia Tech was a solid piece for the Ravens defense.  He stepped up big time when the Ravens released safety Earl Thomas. In his career in Baltimore, Clark played in 96 games, had 384 total tackles, three and a half sacks, five interceptions with one of those being a pick six. All in all, Chuck Clark epitomized the “Play Like A Raven” mantra.
