Contract details of Derrick Brown’s 4-year extension with Panthers

Let’s go inside the numbers of Derrick Brown’s big four-year extension with the Panthers.

Thanks in part to their president and executive vice president of football operations, the Carolina Panthers have given Derrick Brown another term.

As announced on Friday afternoon, the team agreed to a four-year extension with their star lineman. So, what are the details of the deal?

First off, as initially reported by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the pact is worth a total of $96 million with $63.165 million guaranteed. The total is tied for the fourth-highest value amongst all defensive tackles, moving Brown next to New York Jets anchor Quinnen Williams.

That number over four years gives the contract an average annual worth of $24 million, which is also tied with Williams’ deal as the fourth-highest at the position. The very top is headlined by Kansas City’s Chris Jones ($31.75 million) with Las Vegas’ Christian Wilkins ($27.5 million) and Baltimore’s Justin Madubuike ($24.5 million) following up.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated would also add that Brown will receive $49 million over the first two seasons of the agreement and $72 million over the first three.

Great job, Dan and Brandt!

Nick Saban’s highest graded Alabama players according to PFF

PFF grades the best players of the Nick Saban era at Alabama

I never truly thought the day would come, but the [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] era at Alabama has officially come to a close. Saban made the stunning decision to step away from the sport last Wednesday afternoon in a move that sent shock waves across the college football landscape. In turn, the Tide landed former Washington head coach [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag] to fill the legends shoes. The hire is an absolute home run for Greg Byrne and the athletic department, but it doesn’t take away from the heartbreak of Saban stepping away.

Aside from being the greatest coach the sport has ever seen, it’s the man he has been for the University and the people of Tuscaloosa that has made him so beloved. The decision to step away was never going to be an easy one, but after 17 years he had given the program everything he could and was ready for the next chapter of his life, retirement.

Prior to Saban’s arrival in Tuscaloosa the University had never claimed a Heisman Trophy, then during his tenure they claimed four. The Tide had 12 national championships when he arrived, and he leaves the school with 18 now. He went 9-1 in SEC Championship games and had more first-round NFL draft picks (44) than losses at Alabama (27). Accolades and records that truly don’t even make sense.

As great as Saban was, a large part of his success must also be attributed to some incredible players. PFF College ranked the highest graded Alabama players under Saban, and DL Quinnen Williams was the highest ranked player with a grade of 96.0. Interestingly enough, Bryce Young was the only Heisman winner to make the list.

Sauce Gardner, Quinnen Williams reach second straight Pro Bowl

The Jets have a pair of Pro Bowl selections for 2023 in Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams.

The Jets have a pair of Pro Bowl players for the 2023 season, both achieving the honor for the second straight season.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and cornerback Sauce Gardner were revealed as starters for this season’s edition of the Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, Florida.

Williams becomes the third defensive lineman in Jets’ franchise history to reach back-to-back Pro Bowls, joining Hall of Famer Joe Klecko and John Abraham.

Gardner is just the second player in franchise history to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons in the NFL. Safety Erik McMillan achieved the honor after the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

The Jets also have six players as alternates for the Pro Bowl. Kicker Greg Zuerlein and punter Thomas Morstead are first alternates, linebacker C.J. Mosley is a third alternate and running back Breece Hall, linebacker Quincy Williams and edge Jermaine Johnson are fifth alternates.

The 2024 Pro Bowl Games takes place at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Sunday, February 4.

The weirdest Pro Bowl selections and snubs for the 2024 team

The 2024 Pro Bowl teams have been announced, and here are the oddest selections and snubs.

The Pro Bowl is not a serious endeavor. We know that because at the actual Pro Bowl as it’s played now, there isn’t any actual football — it’s more like Field Day in elementary school. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but when it comes to the voting process — 1-3 from the fans, 1/3 from the coaches, and 1/3 from the players — it’s pretty frivolous. There are lifetime achievement awards which have little to do with the present, regionally-stacked oddities, and face-value selections which, again, have nothing to do with present performance.

Still, players get hefty contract incentives from Pro Bowl selections, so you know that players, agents, and teams take this seriously to a point. Now that the rosters for the 2024 Pro Bowl have been announced, here are the weirdest and worst selections.

Jets Week 17 defensive gameday roster vs. Browns

Jets Week 17 defensive gameday roster vs. Browns

The defense of the New York Jets is ready for another challenge as they face their old friend Joe Flacco, who has been on a hot streak over the last three weeks. The Jets will try to slow the Browns offense and keep them from celebrating a playoff berth, at least for a few days.

The usual suspects are playing. Carl Lawson is inactive again as he has been buried on the depth chart in what became a lost season for the veteran defensive end.

Here’s your full gameday roster on the defensive side of the football for Week 17 against the Browns.

4 reasons the Commanders should be concerned vs. the Jets

We look at four reasons why the Commanders should be concerned with the Jets.

The Jets Defensive Front

Sam Howell and the offensive line will be pushed and uncomfortable all day by the Jets defensive line, led by Quinnen Williams, Quinton Jefferson, Bryce Huff, and John Franklin-Myers have registered 18, 13, 17 and 12 QB hits, respectively. They will be coming, and they will be a force. They have collected 3.5, 6.0, 8.0 and 3.0 quarterback sacks, respectively.

The Lack of Assertiveness by Sam Howell

Howell, can’t simply think, oh, I need to get this ball deep and hurt the Jets. Well, he might be on his back an awful lot if he is not assertive and decisive to get the ball out of his hands early. Holding on to it will only play into the powerful rush exhibited by the Jets all season.

Jets QB Trevor Siemian

The Commanders defense has been horrible, and their pass defense has led the way in being bad. Siemian has appeared in 37 career games with 30 starts. He’s completed 58.5% of his passes for 7,203 yards, with 42 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. This Commanders defense better be intense and not over-confident in the struggles of Siemian. The back end of this defense needs to show up on Sunday!

Jets Kicker Greg Zuerlein

If the Commanders let Siemian and the Jets hang around, they could easily be beaten by Zuerlein. He might be turning age 36 this week, but he is the most consistent Jets player this season, not on the defense. He has not missed a field goal attempt under 50 yards this season. He has been successful on 27 of his 28 attempts, with the only missing being from 50+ yards.

6 big questions for Commanders vs. Jets in Week 16

What do Jets’ fans think of Aaron Rodgers? We speak with Jets Wire to learn everything about Washington’s Week 16 opponent.

The Washington Commanders (4-10) face the New York Jets (5-9) on Sunday in a game that has significant implications — for the 2024 NFL draft.

The Commanders currently hold the No. 4 position in next spring’s draft, with the Jets right behind them at No. 5. So, for two teams going nowhere this season, a win could be detrimental to offseason plans.

Washington enters Sunday having lost five consecutive games and seven of its last eight. The Jets have struggled, too, but they still have an elite defense. New York’s primary issue is on the offensive side of the ball. With Aaron Rodgers out for the season, Zach Wilson has struggled. Now, Wilson is out for Sunday’s game due to a concussion, and veteran Trevor Siemian will start against the Commanders.

This game could be really ugly.

To learn about the 2023 New York Jets, we recently sat down with Jets Wire managing editor Billy Riccette to preview this weekend’s game.

6 stats and facts to know for Commanders vs. Jets in Week 16

Here are six things to know about the Commanders and Jets ahead of Sunday’s game.

The New York Jets (5-9) host the Washington Commanders (4-10) on Sunday in a game that has more meaning for the 2024 NFL draft than the current playoff race.

New York and Washington were officially eliminated from playoff contention last week. Both teams were unofficially done long before last week, and the Jets’ season essentially ended in Week 1 when quarterback Aaron Rodgers was lost for the year with an Achilles injury. While Rodgers hinted at a comeback this season, that was never feasible.

The Commanders began the season 2-0 and have lost 10 of their last 12 games. They stink and are entering the last three weeks of Ron Rivera’s tenure as GM and head coach.

As we look ahead to Sunday’s game, here are some stats and facts to know for Week 16.

5 Jets to watch vs. Commanders in Week 16

The Jets may not have the best record but they have a talented roster. Here are five players to watch ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Washington Commanders (4-10) look to snap a five-game losing streak Sunday when they travel to MetLife Stadium for the second time this season to face the New York Jets (5-9).

Washington’s first trip to the Meadowlands was an embarrassing 14-7 loss to the Giants in Week 7. The Giants were without multiple starters, and Washington trailed 14-0 for a large portion of the game.

Things have gone completely off the rails for Washington since. Starting in Week 7, the Commanders have a 1-7 record. Meanwhile, the Jets have struggled, too, with most of their struggles relating to the absence of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Quarterback Zach Wilson has looked overmatched again and is currently in concussion protocol ahead of Sunday’s game vs. Washington. Trevor Siemian will start if Wilson can’t play in Week 16.

Regardless of New York’s record, it has a solid roster. We look at five players to watch in this Week 16 game.
