Ravens P Jordan Stout showers praise on special teams consultant Sam Koch

Baltimore Ravens rookie punter Jordan Stout on former Raven punter Sam Koch as a coach.

The Baltimore Ravens drafted punter Jordan Stout in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.  The team already had fellow punter Sam Koch on the roster at the time, but a few weeks after the draft the veteran hung up his cleats and transitioned to a coaching role within the Baltimore organization as a special teams consultant.

Stout was asked what he thought about having Koch coaching him, and showed praise on the accomplished former punter. He talked about how Koch is “genius”, diving in depth into his coaching style and how he’s not trying to turn Stout into a version of himself.

“[Special teams consultant] Sam [Koch] is genius on the field. He really knows what he’s doing. And the one big thing I want to say is me and Sam are very different punters, and every day I’m out there … Let’s say I make a mistake, or I consistently make a mistake that he wouldn’t have made, he never once says, ‘Oh, well, if I was out there, I would be doing this.’ He’s always like, ‘Hey Jordan, this is what you did; let’s fix it next time.’ He’s not trying to turn me into him, which is unbelievable, and how good of a coach he is after player for 16 years is remarkable.”

Koch was one of the best punters in the league during his time in the NFL, so to have someone of that nature coaching Stout is a tremendous advantage for not only the rookie himself, but the team as well. The former Penn State star impressed during the 2022 preseason, and should help the Ravens win games throughout the year.

Ravens K Justin Tucker showers P Jordan Stout with praise

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker showered punter Jordan Stout with praise

The Baltimore Ravens drafted punter Jordan Stout in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The pick was a questionable one to some, but the retirement of punter Sam Koch now thrusts Stout into action as the team’s next punter.

The punter out of Penn State was seen as one of the best players in the draft at the position, and when asked about Stout, kicker Justin Tucker showed the rookie with praise. He discussed how the former Nittany Lions star has been extremely coachable and willing to learn, saying that he’s done it really well.

“Yes, so the first part of that question; Jordan [Stout] is doing an excellent job drinking from the firehose, so to speak. We’ve thrown so many detail things at him. I liken it to breaking him down into a puddle [of] just mud, so we can build him – and he can build himself – up into a little clay pot. It’s hot enough, we might as well put the pot in the kiln and get him really ready to go for Week One when it really, really matters. (laughter) But Jordan is doing an excellent job of being coachable, and just being the athlete that we all know him to be. He’s come quite a long way in a very short period of time. The dynamic between him and Sam [Koch], and Sam and really all of us out here when we’re working separately from the rest of the team. When we’re out there working on snaps, holds and kicks, the value that Sam is able to add to our operation and what we do on a typical practice day, and even in the meeting room watching our own video and evaluating from a place of he’s been there and done that in every single circumstance that you could possibly imagine. And, he’s done it really, really well. So, to have that experience from the inside out, now he’s able to take the 10,000-foot view and apply all of that to what we’re doing now. The value that Sam has added to our operation has been … It’s immeasurable. I’ll leave it at that”

Having a rookie punter might be an adjustment for the Ravens in the 2022 season, but having veteran Sam Koch coaching him will do wonders for his development. The team felt like Stout could contribute right away, and with special teams being one of the the Ravens’ calling cards, it’s not a surprise to see them invest a mid-round pick in a player like Stout.

Ravens special teams consultant Sam Koch coached up punter Jordan Stout

The Baltimore Ravens saw punter Sam Koch retire last month after an incredible 16-year career. He was a consistent contributor for the team, and played a key part in many victories, including the team’s Super Bowl XVLII win over the San Fransisco 49ers.

Despite retiring, Koch has transitioned into a coaching role with the Baltimore organization, working as a special teams consultant. He will be working closely with the player brought in by the organization to fill his shoes in punter Jordan Stout, who was a fourth-round selection in the 2022 NFL draft. In the “Wired” episode that the team released from mandatory minicamp, Koch was highlighted coaching up Stout during a film session, sharing his knowledge with the former Penn State University star.

Stout has been compared by some to Koch in certain areas, including his ball placement, holding ability and more. The rookie will now get to learn under Koch, who’s wealth of experience and skill should benefit Stout. While the former Nebraska star will be missed on the field, Stout has the potential to be the next great Ravens punter.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh discusses how different practice feels with Sam Koch on coaching staff

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh talked about the difference of practice with Sam Koch on the coaching staff

The Baltimore Ravens will enter the 2022 season looking a bit different on special teams following former veteran punter Sam Koch announcing his retirement from the NFL after 16 seasons. It was later revealed that he would stay in Baltimore as a special teams consultant, where he’ll be able to help the special teams unit and mentor his replacement in punter Jordan Stout, who the Ravens selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft

Baltimore held their second session of organized team activities on Wednesday. Following practice, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh spoke with the media. He was asked about how different practice felt with Koch on the coaching staff, and Harbaugh let it be know that it was different not seeing Koch take punts, but that having him in a coaching role would be good for the team.

“It was different. Punt practice seemed a little quieter and calmer out there – I don’t know why. But [special teams consultant] Sam [Koch] is an intense dude, and having him with those guys [and] with the young guy [Jordan] Stout, is just a blessing for us.”

Koch played in 256 of 257 contests during his time in Baltimore, missing just one game due to be placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. The veteran made the Pro Bowl in 2015 and was regarded as one of the best punters in the league. Stout will have some big shoes to fill in replacing Koch, but being mentored by his predecessor should help him make a big impact rather quickly.

Former Ravens punter Sam Koch discussed his excitement about working with rookie Jordan Stout

The Baltimore Ravens celebrated the illustrious career of punter Sam Koch on Thursday, as the veteran officially announced his retirement after 16 years in the NFL. He was the longest tenured player on the roster, and one of just a few players remaining from Baltimore’s Super Bowl XLVII winning team from the 2012-2013 season.

While answering questions from the media, Koch showed his appreciation for his teammates, coaches, and the Ravens’ organization. When he was asked about what advice he had for his successor in Jordan Stout, he revealed that he was excited to work with the rookie, and has even already done so in certain aspects.

“First and foremost, I’m just excited to work with Jordan [Stout]. We are going to try to make him the next best punter of the Ravens and do everything we can to make him the best punter in the league. So, I look forward to this opportunity. We’ve spoken. We’ve talked. We’ve already worked on some punting and holding aspects of his game. So, I’m just going to try to teach him everything I have and put everything I have into making him the best punter this league has seen, along with Justin Tucker, because he can get better, and Morgan [Cox] – or Nick Moore, sorry.” (laughter)

Ravens HC John Harbaugh discusses impact of P Sam Koch on Baltimore locker room

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh talked about the impact of punter Sam Koch on the team’s locker room

The Baltimore Ravens were lucky enough to have one of the best punters in the league for 16 great seasons with Sam Koch. The veteran provided plenty of memories in a Baltimore uniform, many of which will be remembered despite his retirement on Thursday.

During Koch’s retirement press conference, Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh was asked about the punter’s impact on his teammates in the Baltimore locker room. Harbaugh called Koch “the voice of reason”, lauding his leadership abilitiles.

“Sam [Koch] was always the voice of reason, I would say. Sam would … You wouldn’t say a lot, but when you did, it’s like ‘Inna fatahna,’ I guess. Right? That old thing? (Sam Koch laughs) The guys all listened. But Sam was in all the leadership meetings we ever had. A lot of crazy topics, sometimes, would come up. Sam would always give his opinion honestly, and it always made sense. As a coach, you sure appreciate that. He’s been a big part of the leadership. I don’t know how many punters around the league, maybe a few but not too many, have had the kind of roles on their team that Sam Koch has had on this team from a leadership standpoint. So, it’s another part of his legacy.”
