College football’s top-25 2023 recruiting classes after the early signing period

With the early signing period in the rearview mirror, see which teams have the best 2023 recruiting classes so far.

While the current college football season is in the middle of its bowl game schedule leading up to the College Football Playoff and the New Year’s Six games, incoming recruits had a huge week with national signing day on Wednesday, kicking off the three-day early signing period.

The early signing period has become a bigger deal than the regular signing period in February, and this week was the first opportunity for current high schoolers to sign their National Letters of Intent, telling the world where they’ll be playing football next season.

So with the end of the early signing period Friday, here’s a look at the top-25 2023 recruiting classes, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings as of Dec. 23.

Among the top-25 classes for next year, the SEC has 10 teams, the Big Ten and Big 12 have four teams apiece and the ACC and Pac-12 have three teams each. The remaining team on this list is independent Notre Dame.

RECRUITING: A look at key visitors for Saturday’s matchup against Auburn

Roll Tide Wire breaks down which recruits will be on campus for the Iron Bowl on Saturday.

As expected, there will be a slew of visitors for the Tide’s matchup against rival Auburn on Saturday. The Iron Bowl has always been a big recruiting weekend for the Tide. This weekend will be no different.

Two high school teammates and 2023 five-star prospects defensive tackle James Smith and edge rusher Qua Russaw will be in attendance on Saturday. Both recruits have the same top-six schools and have made it clear that they want to team up at the next level. As of right now, Alabama holds the lead in their recruitment, according to On3’s RPM. However, programs like Auburn and Florida have been trying to make their recruiting pitch to them as well. It is good news that both will be on campus on Saturday.

Another highly-touted, 2023 five-star edge rusher that will be in town for an unofficial visit is Keon Keeley. The product of Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Florida will likely choose between Ohio State and the Tide. As of right now, it seems 50-50. That could change this weekend, though. It is something to keep a close eye on.

Despite 2023 wide receiver target Jaren Hamilton being from Gainesville, he doesn’t have Florida as one of his finalists. Hamilton has taken several visits to the Gators, but it seems like the Tide are still the favorite to land him. The three programs that have been pushing for his talents are Michigan, Tennessee, and Alabama. This weekend could be the deciding factor in Hamilton’s recruiting process.

It seems like the Alabama coaching staff will not quit in their pursuit of Alabama native and Florida commit Kelby Collins. Despite Collins’ commitment to the Gators, he has made several trips to Tuscaloosa. Defensive line coach Freddie Roach stays in constant contact with him and his family. It might be a stretch, but the Tide are pulling all stops to flip his commitment.

Several other recruits that will be in town for visits are 2026 quarterback Julian Lewis, 2023 linebacker Arion Carter, 2023 defensive back CJ Blocker and 2023 defensive lineman Rueben Bain.

Needless to say, the Tide are still looking good on the recruiting front. A dominating performance against the Tigers in Saturday’s Iron Bowl could be the icing on the cake for some of these recruits. We will have to wait and see.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football recruiting news.

2026 QB Julian Lewis set for unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa for Iron Bowl

The 2026 QB recruit will be in Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl, he already holds an official offer from the Crimson Tide.

Julian Lewis, a quarterback from the 2026 class, announced via Twitter that he would be in attendance for this weekend’s Iron Bowl. The Georgia native has already received over 20 offers from programs across the country. The Tide officially offered Lewis in June.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban doesn’t often extend offers to underclassmen unless he has seen enough to extend them an actual offer. That appears to be the case for Lewis.

Lewis is a freshman at Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Georgia. This season Lewis has thrown for 3,006 yards and 37 touchdowns. Not to mention, he is competing at the highest classification in Georgia, where he’s led his team to a perfect 12-0 record.

The Tide are enamored by the talent of this young man and have made that clear. It will be interesting to see how this weekend’s visit goes for Lewis as he is able to make an unofficial visit for one of the biggest rivalries in college football.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Lewis’ recruitment as well as other Alabama football recruiting news.

Notre Dame to host five star quarterback, LSU commit for USC game

Could the Irish pull this one off?

Notre Dame was supposed to host five-star quarterback Walker Howard when Cincinnati made a trip to South Bend earlier this month, but an injury the night before to Howard kept him from making the trip.  Now the Lafayette, Louisiana native is set to make the trip north for an official visit which will now occur as the program he’s currently committed to, LSU, looks for their next head coach.

According to a report from Tom Loy of 247Sports:

This is a name Irish Illustrated had been tracking for months when we were told that he had a strong relationship with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees, and it looks like that connection is paying off to at least give the Irish a shot at the 6-1, 195-pounder this weekend.

As we said back when Howard was originally set to visit Notre Dame, this is a swing you absolutely take even if you’ve already gotten a commitment from Steve Angeli.  Quarterback has been a spot where Notre Dame has been limited compared to some of the nation’s elites and Howard was seemingly help close that gap.

And now with a coaching change happening at LSU the possibility of him not actually attending school there feels at least somewhat possible.

18 Florida Gators commits named to Sports Illustrated’s All-American watch list

Featuring recruits in the 2021 class from all 50 United States, Sports Illustrated released their first annual All-American watch list.

Featuring recruits in the 2021 class from all 50 United States, Sports Illustrated released their first annual All-American watch list on July 15.

John Garcia, Jr., SI’s Director of Recruiting, spearheaded this project and AllGators’ Demetrius Harvey composed the initial list of the 18 Florida Gators commits to make the cut.

A total of 1,000 prospects earned this preseason recognition, with more than 700 of them having already announced their collegiate destination.

10 of the future Gators to receive this honor project to contribute on the offensive side of the football in Gainesville, led by Ocala four-star wide receiver Trevonte Rucker.

The No. 33 wideout in the class, per the 247Sports Composite, Rucker stands just under six feet and tips the scales at a reported 157 pounds. He will need to add some muscle to withstand the physicality of the Southeastern Conference, but strength and conditioning coach Nick Savage should have little trouble accomplishing that.

Each of the other two other receiver commits, Seffner’s Charles Montgomery and Loganville, Georgia’s Daejon Reynolds, both fellow four-stars, made the cut, as well. While listed as a wideout in this exercise, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Montgomery will likely line up in the backfield and see some carries at the collegiate level, too.

Both quarterback pledges, four-star Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Burleson, Texas three-star Jalen Kitna, also earned the nod from SI.

Set to play his senior season at Grayson High School, where he will be teammates with Reynolds, Del Rio-Wilson has been steadily rising in the recruiting ranks after a strong showing at the Elite 11 Finals in Nashville, Tennessee from June 29-to-July 1.

Other offensive commits to receive this recognition were Tampa four-star tight end Gage Wilcox, and four three-stars, Jacksonville tight end Nick Elksnis, and Orlando’s Javonte Gardner, Stone Mountain, Georgia’s George Jackson, and Lynn Haven’s Adrein Strickland, all offensive tackle prospects.

On the defensive side of the football, Fort Lauderdale four-star defensive end Tyreak Sapp, Florida’s highest-rated player in the class, led the charge. He was joined by future linemates Justus Boone, another four-star from Sumter, South Carolina, and Fort Myers three-star Christopher Thomas.

Carrollton, Georgia four-star Chief Borders was the lone linebacker pledge to make the list, with the other four future defensive Gators, Baltimore, Maryland’s Clinton Burton, Jr. and Bradenton’s Kamar Wilcoxson, both four-stars, and Winter Park’s Dakota Mitchell and Tampa’s Jordan Young, each three-stars, all residing in the secondary.

This means all 18 of Florida’s current high school commits made the list, with the two other players in the cycle, four-star outside linebacker Diwun Black and three-star guard Deyavie Hammond, both being junior college transfers.

247Sports ranks the program’s 2021 class as the ninth-best in the nation, while ESPN is slightly higher on the group, pegging them at No. 7.

Georgia RB commit Lovasea Carroll re-affirms commitment

Georgia Bulldogs running back commitment Lovasea Carroll considered flipping to the Florida Gators.

4-star running back Lovasea Carroll has been committed to the University of Georgia since April, but recently considered backing off his commitment to the Bulldogs.

Carroll tweeted on Friday that a “business decision is coming,” which caused many to believe that he was on the verge of announcing a decommitment from UGA.

Carroll set the record straight in an open and honest manner:

It’s great news for Georgia Bulldogs fans that Carroll is looking to stick with his commitment to UGA. Carroll admits that he considered flipping to Florida for more playing time, but he’s looking at the big picture and thinks he’d be better off in Athens.

It’s not a bad idea for Carroll, who could save valuable wear and tear on his body if he ends up behind talented backs at Georgia. Running backs tend to have some of the shortest NFL careers. Much of this is due to the injuries that commonly mount up at the position.

Carroll, out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, ranks as the nation’s No. 103 prospect and No. 6 running back in the class of 2021. Carroll is a Warrenton, Georgia native.

Carroll chose Georgia over South Carolina, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State. At The Opening Regional in March of 2019, Carroll ran a 4.56 40-time and recorded a 36.3 inch vertical.

Georgia’s gain in Carroll is Florida’s loss. The Gators desperately need a running back recruit:

Is Georgia RB commit Lovasea Carroll considering a flip?

A few tweets from Georgia RB commit Lovasea Carroll makes me wonder if he’s considering flipping to Florida.

4-star running back Lovasea Carroll has been committed to UGA since April, however, based on his recent tweets there’s reason to believe he may be considering backing off that commitment from the Dawgs.

Carroll tweeted on Friday that a “business decision is coming,” which leads me to believe that he may be on the verge of announcing a decommitment from UGA.

Carroll, out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, ranks as the nation’s No. 103 prospect and No. 6 running back in the class of 2021.

His IMG teammate, Kamar Wilcoxson, announced on Friday that he is 100% committed to the University of Florida and is doing what he can to get Carroll to join him, according to this excerpt from Florida’s Sports Illustrated page.

If it wasn’t obvious enough, Wilcoxson is a guy that other players want to play with and he is already working on other recruits to join the Gators 2021 class. Names that Wilcoxson and other UF commits are after begin with IMG teammates running back Lovasea Carroll and linebacker Xavien Sorey, Pennslyvania safety Donovan McMillon, cornerback Jason Marshall, safety Corey Collier, and more. It is impressive to see recruits team up with others, but it is rare to see a recruit with this much influence on his peers.

He also quoted Wilcoxson’s tweet with Gator emojis, which I’m not going to read too far into at this time. He may have just been showing some love to his teammate.

Carroll is a Warrenton, Georgia, native playing his high school ball at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Carroll chose Georgia over South Carolina, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State.

At The Opening Regional in March of 2019, Carroll ran a 4.56 40-time and recorded a 36.3 inch vertical.

Notre Dame Makes Scholarship Offer to Son of Fighting Irish Great

Bobby Taylor was a star for Notre Dame football in the early 90’s. Almost three decades later the Irish have offered his son a scholarship.

Notre Dame fans of a certain age range (mine included) more than just remember the name Bobby Taylor.  The 1994 consensus First-Team All-American corner helped the Irish was a part of a team that nearly won a national title a year earlier.

After his impressive 1994 season Taylor was selected 50th overall in the 1995 NFL Draft and spent the next nine years with the Philadelphia Eagles before finishing his career in 2005 with the Seattle Seahawks.

Now Notre Dame is looking for their second Bobby Taylor to be a key part of their secondary as they offered his son Bobby a football scholarship on Tuesday.

The younger Taylor is listed at 6-1, 180 pounds and is rated as a top-30 corner in the 2022 recruiting class according to 247Sports.

After playing his freshman year of high school football at Houston Heights, Taylor helped Katy High School to an 11-2 record and Texas 6A D-1 third round playoff appearance as a sophomore.

Notre Dame joins over 20 other programs to have offered Taylor with plenty of the biggest powers including Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and USC.
