Brian Kelly changed QB verbiage ahead of the Ole Miss game

Walker Howard’s familiarity with LSU’s system led to some changes this week.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has had to throw a wrench in the plans for this week as far as quarterbacks are concerned.

We can say thanks to the transfer portal for this change. [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] committed to LSU out of high school but after one season, Howard entered the transfer portal. He decided to take his talents to Oxford, Mississippi.

That has led to coach Kelly having to change some of the quarterback checks at the line of scrimmage. If the Tigers still used the same ones that Howard used while at LSU, the Rebels defense could easily go over to the bench and ask him what the calls were.

You can’t have someone on the other team knowing your signals. It’s like a cheat code. I’m sure that throws off the usual rhythm of a game week. We will see if this causes some issues when the Tigers take on the Rebels on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT.

Brian Kelly’s QB management sets LSU up as longtime contenders

Garrett Nussmeier’s return might be Kelly’s most important commitment yet.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] pulled off his most important recruiting job yet.

Earlier this week, quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] passed on the transfer portal’s second window and elected to stay at LSU.

There were never really any reports that suggested Nussmeier could leave. It always appeared LSU was confident he would stay, but speculation about the third-year QB remained.

With programs the size of Alabama and Georgia needing QBs, who would have blamed Nussmeier for exploring his opportunities elsewhere? This is a guy with evident NFL arm talent who could be ready to start right now. If his name appeared in the portal, coaches would be all over it.

Following Walker Howard’s transfer to Ole Miss, LSU couldn’t afford to lose Nussmeier. Looking back on it, Howard’s transfer might have even signaled LSU’s confidence in keeping Nussmeier.

With Howard gone, LSU was down to [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], Nussmeier, and incoming freshman [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag].

You don’t want to enter a season with just two scholarship QBs, especially when one is a true freshman who has never taken a snap.

But Nussmeier’s return is much more than a depth boost. While it’s likely Daniels keeps his job this fall, nobody can rule out Nussmeier starting or making a significant impact.

While some of LSU’s division rivals scramble to find a QB they like, LSU already has two. It’s hard to ask for much more than that.

Kelly set up LSU to contend for at least two years. Daniels was good last year and projects to be even better in 2023. Nussmeier, while not perfect, showed why coaches are so excited about what he can be.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Daniels’ health was not perfect last fall. He’s a running QB who takes a lot of hits. He was banged up on multiple occasions and even had to leave the Auburn game.

If Daniels has to leave any games this fall, Nussmeier could enter without the offense missing a beat.

Again, that’s the type of security that’s rare to find in this era. It’s not easy to keep two good QBs on your roster. When it comes to this position, there’s not enough supply to meet the demand and there’s always a place where players the caliber of Daniels and Nussmeier could start.

Think about the uncertainty this room faced following the 2021 season. [autotag]Max Johnson[/autotag] had hit the transfer portal, Nussmeier missed the bowl game to preserve his redshirt and [autotag]Myles Brennan[/autotag] had just missed the entire year with an injury.

Nussmeier isn’t even a Kelly recruit. He signed with [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag]. The staff Nussmeier signed with is long gone. With Brennan returning and the addition of Daniels and Howard, he could have left last year too.

But things got sorted out. Last spring, Daniels and Nussmeier emerged from the pack.

Kelly and LSU got here because they weren’t afraid to be aggressive. Kelly had talent in that room, but that didn’t stop him from getting Daniels. He recognized the talent he had in Nussmeier, even if it meant losing Brennan and Howard.

Now, this room is stable as can be.

This is a QB-driven sport and LSU has two that can take the wheel at any moment.

Where LSU stands in On3’s updated 2024 consensus recruiting rankings

On3 has released its latest recruiting rankings for the 2024 class, and LSU sits just outside the top 10.

On3 released its latest recruiting rankings for the 2024 class, and LSU is just outside the top 10.

The Tigers have 12 commitments for the class. The emphasis of this class so far has been to build more depth at the linebacker position. LSU has lost a number of linebackers to the transfer portal and injuries lately so [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is trying to rebuild that aspect of the team.

He has an incredible foundation at linebacker with talented sophomore [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag].

With the loss of [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] to the transfer portal, LSU was looking to recruit another talented quarterback, and it landed four-star [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag] from Jacksonville, Florida.

This class is far from complete and these rankings are just based on high school players. Kelly likes to be aggressive in the transfer portal and bring in talented guys with substantial experience.

We will see how it all shakes out.

Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart: ‘I see myself as the starter’

Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard are formidable contenders, but Jaxson Dart thinks he can beat them both at Ole Miss.

In 2022, former Trojan quarterback Jaxson Dart played for former USC head coach Lane Kiffin with the Ole Miss Rebels. Dart completed 226 of 362 passes at Ole Miss for 2,974 yards and 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 143.6. He also rushed 128 times for 614 yards and another score.

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff brought in two talented options under center this offseason: former Oklahoma State veteran Spencer Sanders and former four-star LSU freshman Walker Howard.

(Sanders) is a four-year starter and a first-team All-Big 12 selection. He is expected to dethrone Dart as the QB1, but Dart hasn’t given up in his battle to retain the starting job.

Don’t count out Howard, who played his first season at LSU and transferred to Ole Miss in January. He is going through spring drills. Howard has four years of eligibility remaining.

Dart could have transferred out of Oxford to avoid a battle with two other legitimate contenders for the starting job. Instead, Dart wants to play for Kiffin and succeed as the Rebels’ main man.

“To be honest, I see myself as the starter,” Dart said “I had Year 1 and I kind of established myself. Now I have Year 2 and I’m getting more bonds with the guys on the team and being a leader. I feel like I’ve taken ownership of that and I’m just ready to do my job and I’m loving where I’m at right now. I expect myself to have a great spring and keep performing like I’m performing.”

Jaxson Dart’s future at Ole Miss is uncertain after Lane Kiffin grabs two high-profile transfer QBs

Does Jaxson Dart really want to battle Spencer Sanders for QB1 at Ole Miss? We’ll find out soon enough.

LSU freshman quarterback Walker Howard is leaving Baton Rouge and transferring to SEC rival Ole Miss.

Howard was a four-star recruit out of St. Thomas More (Louisiana) and the No. 40 overall recruit in his class on the 247Sports composite.

At LSU, Howard completed 2 of 4 passes for 7 yards and retained redshirt status. He rushed six times for 33 yards.

Rebels coach Lane Kiffin brought in USC Trojan transfer Jaxson Dart before the 2022 season. Jaxson Dart threw for 2,974 yards had 20 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions this past season and will have to fight Howard and Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders in the spring and preseason to keep his job.

Ole Miss backup quarterback Luke Altmyer, a former four-star recruit, saw the handwriting on the wall and entered the portal. He transferred to Illinois.

This all means Dart has some decisions to make. Does he want to battle Spencer Sanders for the QB1 spot or transfer to another school where he will not have to scratch and claw for a starting job? Sanders has just one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, which is less than Dart. Presumably, Sanders has the inside track to QB1, in which case it would seem obvious that Dart should seek other opportunities elsewhere.

Walker Howard commits to SEC West rival

Howard is joining Lane Kiffin in Oxford.

Former LSU quarterback [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] is heading to Ole Miss to join Lane Kiffin, the true freshman passer announced on Wednesday.

Howard, a native of Lafayette who attended St. Thomas More High School, redshirted during his first season in Baton Rouge after playing in just two games. Following the year, he opted to enter the transfer portal with four remaining years of eligibility.

The Rebels received a visit from Howard this week, as did TCU. Florida didn’t get Howard on campus, though it did recruit him and sent offensive coordinator Rob Sale to visit his home in Lafayette. It seems Howard will be remaining in the SEC West after all.

Howard has far from a clear path to starting in Oxford, Mississippi. Ole Miss returns quarterback Jaxson Dart, a USC transfer who started this season. He struggled at times but still seems poised to retain the job heading into 2023. He and Howard will battle it out this offseason.

Walker Howard makes transfer decision official with goodbye letter to LSU program

Howard made his decision to leave official, penning a letter to the LSU program and fanbase.

Players have removed themselves from the portal and decided to return to school after choosing to transfer in the past, but it seems that no such change of heart is coming for quarterback [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag].

The former four-star recruit and top-50 overall prospect entered the transfer portal last week in a decision that came as somewhat of a surprise. On Monday, Howard penned a farewell letter to the LSU program and fanbase, seemingly making his decision official in the process.

“As a kid, I have always dreamed of playing at LSU,” he said in his post on Twitter. “I never imagined being anywhere else. However, when things happen in life, we have to adjust and keep moving forward. With that being said, I have made the decision to leave LSU to look for the best spot for me to grow. This was a very difficult decision for me and my family. I can’t explain how thankful I am for all the relationships I have built at LSU.

“I want to thank coach Kelly and his staff for welcoming me with open arms and for always having my back. I am sad to leave my best friends and teammates, but I know that we will forever be friends. Thank you again, LSU.”

Howard has become a hot commodity on the transfer market already, taking visits to TCU and Ole Miss. The Lafayette native and St. Thomas More High School graduate was also visited at his home by Florida Gators offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Rob Sale.

After only seeing action in two games this season and attempting four passes, Howard will officially be moving on with four remaining years of eligibility.

This Week in LSU Sports: Women’s hoops still perfect, Burrow and the Bengals moving on, gymnastics takes No. 1 Oklahoma to the wire

Here’s everything LSU fans need to know this week.

Football is over, but this one of the busiest times of the year for college sports.

Winter sports are in full swing with conference play heating up and spring sports are fast approaching. It was an eventful week for LSU with some good and bad. Men’s basketball, women’s basketball and gymnastics all had multiple contests while there was some significant transfer portal news on the football side of things.

It can all be a lot to keep up with, so we’re going to recap the past week in LSU sports, from football’s offseason news to what’s happening on the basketball court. We’ll also take a look at some storylines to monitor going forward.

Former LSU QB Walker Howard names two upcoming visits

The former Tigers quarterback officially entered the transfer portal on Friday, and he’ll take upcoming visits to TCU and Ole Miss.

Walker Howard’s official transfer portal announcement came out on Friday, and we now know who two of his visits are going to be: Howard is going to be visiting Ole Miss and TCU.

As soon as that news came out, Lane Kiffin wasted no time in trolling [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] on Twitter by retweeting the video of a Walker Howard recruiting trip to LSU. Kiffin is always looking for talented quarterbacks and Howard fits that mold.

TCU was named as a top suitor for Howard as soon as he entered the portal, but things may have changed as Garrett Riley is headed to be the offensive coordinator at Clemson.

There has also been a lot of smoke on Twitter about Billy Napier and Florida sliding in and trying to get Howard. The Gators could use a quarterback as they lost Anthony Richardson to the NFL Draft. They did sign Graham Mertz from Wisconsin out of the transfer portal, but you can always use more than one quarterback.

Breaking down the future of LSU’s quarterback room after Walker Howard’s departure

Here’s where the LSU QB room stands without Howard.

[autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] was billed as the future of LSU. Even before the coaching change, before the arrival of [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] or [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], Howard was the guy.

That story has taken a turn. On Wednesday, Howard entered the transfer portal.

An LSU quarterback entering the portal isn’t a surprise. Fans have speculated for months despite Kelly stating he thought the room would remain intact through the spring.

Howard was not expected to compete for the starting job in 2023. With Daniels and [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] sticking around, Howard was at least a year away.

From that standpoint, the move makes sense. But if Howard remained a Tiger, it’s not hard to see a scenario where he cruised to the starting job in 2024 or 2025 if Nussmeier left early, whether through the portal or the draft.

LSU’s still in a good spot with Daniels and Nussmeier. Here’s where LSU’s QB room stands now and where it could go moving forward.
