Elite 2025 safety Jordan Young still considering Penn State

Penn State is going after one of the top safeties in the Class of 2025.

Penn State continues looking to build upon their strong showing so far in the class of 2025 and are coming out of a weekend where many of their top targets were on campus to witness spring practice in person.

At this time, many of the uncommitted recruits are still gathering information on different schools interested in them before planning out official visits for later in the summer.

While early commitments always garner attention and give fans and the coaching staff something they can tangibly see on paper, there are many players out there who won’t be choosing their college until later in the process.

That’s the case with four-star safety [autotag]Jordan Young[/autotag].

The North Carolina native is ranked as the 33rd-best player in the country and second overall at his position according to On3’s Industry Rankings.

According to Chad Simmons of On3, he’s also planning on announcing his commitment on Oct. 10. This will come after he visits Clemson, Florida State and Tennessee (which are already scheduled), but he also told the insider that he’s still considering Penn State amongst others (subscription required).

That interest could also lead to an official visit from Young this summer, but he also wants to take some trips to different campuses to get a feel for different atmospheres on gamedays.

For the Nittany Lions, this would be a huge get.

They only have one defensive back committed in the class currently, three-star cornerback [autotag]Xxavier Thomas[/autotag].

It will be interesting to see how this recruitment progresses since he’s yet to visit Happy Valley out of his 18 total trips he’s taken so far.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine currently has Clemson as the favorites to land Young with a 29.6% chance, followed by Tennessee at 17.4%.

Gators losing DB Jordan Young to transfer portal

After two years in the Swamp, defensive back Jordan Young is hitting the transfer portal in search of more playing time.

Redshirt freshman defensive back Jordan Young is testing the transfer portal, according to an announcement he made on Twitter Friday.

“Although it wasn’t in my heart’s desire, after careful deliberation amongst my family, I’ve concluded it is within my best interest to enter the transfer portal, so that I may have the opportunity to showcase my GOD given talents, and abilities as an athlete and Scholar,” Young wrote. “Ultimately, I’ve learned so many valuable things by being a part of this organization. I will carry that wisdom along with me as learning tools and motivation within my next journey. In the words of the late Tom Petty “I Won’t Back Down”!”

Young officially entered the portal on Saturday.

While this clearly was a tough decision, Young isn’t the first defensive back to leave the program after Year 1 of the Billy Napier. With a strong incoming secondary class, it appears that Florida’s defense will head in a different direction. Young is the 20th player to hit the portal this offseason for Florida and the fifth defensive player to depart from the program.

A former four-star recruit from the class of 2021, young spent two years in Gainesville. He appeared in three games at the STAR position his freshman year before redshirting and played in nine games for the Gators this year. He leaves the program with 11 total tackles and one pass deflection.

2022 Florida Football Season Preview: Cornerbacks

Kaiir Elam is off to the NFL, but the Gators still have plenty of talent at cornerback. Here’s who Florida will be using in the secondary for 2022.

The penultimate group in Gators Wire’s preseason position-by-position breakdown of the 2022 Florida football roster is none other than the cornerbacks.

Gone is [autotag]Kaiir Elam[/autotag], the team’s lockdown and lead corner last season. The man who backed Elam up in 2021, sophomore [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]., will replace him as the team’s No. 1 in the position room after proving himself worthy as a true freshman.

Behind him, things are less clear, but there’s a group of serviceable defensive backs that could use some playing time to reach their full potential. There’s also [autotag]Jaydon Hill[/autotag], who missed all of last year with a torn ACL. He’s out to start the season but should work his way back into the rotation over the course of the year. Before the injury, he was projected to compete for starting time opposite of Elam.

Here is a look at all seven cornerbacks on the 2022 Florida football fall roster.

No. 1 cornerback prospect said Florida is in top 2 schools after visit

Can Florida hold off Alabama for five-star cornerback Cormani McClain?

Five-star cornerback [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] is one of Florida’s top targets regardless of position. He is the third-best player overall, according to the 247Sports composite rankings and hails from nearby Lakeland, Florida. He was one of the top prospects who visited the Gators for the Orange and Blue Game on Thursday.

McClain told 247Sports that he enjoyed seeing the improvement of the younger defensive backs like cornerback [autotag]Jordan Young[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Donovan McMillon[/autotag].

Even though the Florida staff said over 300 prospects came to the game, they still made sure to prioritize McClain.

“It was great hanging out, seeing a new view,” McClain said. “Great coaching staff. Shoutout to the coaching staff. It was a great game tonight, for sure.”

After his second visit to the Swamp this year under new head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag], he said Florida is among his top schools along with Alabama. McClain also calls the Gators “home” during interviews.

Napier has done a great job recruiting him and they have developed a strong relationship, according to McClain, and Florida stands out in his recruitment because of how close it is to Lakeland and how he believes he can come in and play as a freshman.

He also mentioned that he wants to make a commitment in June and knock out his official visits in the summer.
