NBA Free Agency 2020: The biggest winners and losers of free agency so far

No, it’s not too early for this.

Yes, NBA free agency just started on Friday night. No, it has not even been a full 24 hours quite yet. Yes, it’s probably too early to judge what teams are doing right now when there are still deals being made.

But guess what? We’re about to do exactly that.

This is a way-too-early breakdown of the winners and losers of the NBA’s free agency period so far. There’s still plenty of time and still plenty of players out there looking for new homes, but things have been intense.

Some teams have made moves for the better, some for the worse and some just not at all. Here’s your quick look at who did what.

Warriors Rewind: Former No. 2 overall pick Rick Barry scores game-high 44 points vs. Pistons in 1966

With no hoops on the schedule, Warriors Wire is rewinding through Golden State’s history for memorable matchups and standout performances.

With no hoops on the calendar, Warriors Wire is rewinding the tape back through Golden State’s history for memorable matchups, standout performances and everything else in between.

Only once in franchise history has the Golden State Warriors landed the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft. Luckily for the Warriors, their second pick from the past was a home run.

Before Bob Myers and Steve Kerr are on the clock in the 2020 NBA Draft, Warriors Wire is highlighting one performance from Golden State’s lone former No. 2 selection.

November 14, 1966

Following four consecutive wins, the San Francisco Warriors welcomed the Detroit Pistons to the Bay Area for the second straight night. One day prior to their Sunday night tilt, the Warriors blew past the Pistons for a 135-96 win in San Francisco. Yet, the Pistons returned for a rare back-to-back matchup featuring future Hall of Fame talent Rick Barry.

The second-year small forward exploded for a game-high 44 points on 17-of-30 shooting from the field, with 11 rebounds and six assists in 44 minutes. Against the Pistons, Barry knocked down all 10 of his 10 trips to the free-throw line.

Barry’s All-Star teammate Nate Thurmond added a monster double-double performance with 20 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the field with 30 rebounds.

While Ron Reed also recorded an impressive double-double with 15 points and 20 rebounds for the Pistons, it wasn’t enough to keep up with the San Francisco Warriors.

San Francisco’s 115-104 win over the Pistons helped push their winning streak to five games. The Warriors would go on to win seven consecutive games before snapping their win streak with a loss to the Baltimore Bullets.

Hall was also named  to the NBA G League’s All-Rookie team.

In February, Donta was called up to the NBA for the Detroit Pistons for a 10-day contract where he played in 4 games.

In his first game for the Pistons, he also recorded 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist in the 15 minutes of play he had against the Denver Nuggets.

After the game, Pistons head coach Dwane Casey said:

“Really was impressed with Donta,” Casey said. “Came over a couple of times in the first half, great verticality. I thought there was a bad call. One foul, (Will Barton) did a 360, out of control, and (Hall) got called for a foul. But I thought he did a good job.”

And Donta made it clear… this is just the beginning,

“I’m bringing it every day. Practice, games – I’m coming. I’m not slowing down no time soon.”

Hall has averaged 15.4 points in 36 games this season with the Pistons’ Grand Rapids affiliate in the G League. He has also 67 percent on field goals, while racking up 382 rebounds, 38 assists, 38 steals and 53 blocks.

After waiver claim, Jordan McRae scores 15 for Pistons

After waiver claim, Jordan McRae scores 15 for Pistons.

DETROIT — When former University of Tennessee basketball player Jordan McRae was dealt to the Denver Nuggets at the NBA trade deadline, he was supposed to provide the Nuggets with depth and another shooter.

McRae, who was having a solid season with the Washington Wizards at the time of the trade, didn’t find much joy with the Nuggets, who are in a battle with the Los Angeles Lakers for the top playoff seed in the Western Conference.

He played just four games for the Nuggets and was placed on waivers.

But it didn’t take McRae long to find a new home as the Detroit Pistons claimed him off the waiver wire.

Like the Wizards, the Pistons are not in a playoff chase in the Eastern Conference, but McRae was impressive in his debut in the Motor City.

During warm-ups Wednesday night, his jersey was still being prepared and he was familiarizing himself with Little Caesars Arena.

But when he took the floor, he scored 15 points, dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds in Detroit’s 114-107 loss to Oklahoma City.

The Pistons host Utah Saturday at 7 p.m.

Prediction

Jazz 113, Pistons 108

Moneyline (ML)

The Jazz (-358) are extremely expensive in this game, a continuation of their road trip. This game might be a lot closer than most think, although the Pistons (+275) are also a risky play at home based on their overall body of work this season. Jazz point guard Mike Conley played last night, and he has not been playing in back-to-back slates. The team said they expect him to play tonight, but they’d see how he felt when he woke up Saturday morning. The best course of action is to AVOID, and look to the line.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Jazz to win outright would return a profit of $2.79.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The PISTONS (+7.5, 100) are actually a solid 4-1 ATS across the past five outings while going 4-1 in the past five as an underdog. The Pistons are also 4-0 ATS in the past four on two days of rest. For the Jazz (-7.5, -121), they’re 1-4 ATS in the past five as a road favorite, 1-5-1 ATS in the past seven overall and 2-11-2 ATS in the previous 13 overall as a fave.

Over/Under (O/U)

Sometimes trends are made to be broken. The series trends suggest a slam-dunk under play. However, the OVER 214.5 (-106) is the way to go in this one. The over has hit in nine of the past 12 for Utah on the road, while going 8-2 in the past 10 as a road favorite. The over is also 21-7 in the past 28 for the Pistons at LCA, while going 12-3 in the past 15 at home against teams with a winning road mark.

Pistons at Kings: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated Sunday at 10:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Kings 110, Pistons 101

Moneyline (ML)

The Kings (-334) have been on a roll, posting four straight-up wins in the past five, and they have covered five in a row. Look for them to steamroll the skidding Pistons (+260), although laying more than three times your return is not recommended. AVOID, and look to the line.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Kings ML returns a profit of just $3 if they win.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Take the KINGS (-7.5, -110) at home, as they’re 5-0 ATS in the past five overall, 4-0 ATS in the past four at Golden 1 Center against teams with a losing road record and 6-0 ATS in the past six against teams with a losing overall mark. The Pistons (+7.5, -110) have covered four of the past five, but they’re just 15-25-1 ATS in the past 41 as an underdog. They’re also just 2-5-2 ATS in the past nine meetings against the Kings.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 216.5 (-110) is the play lately for the Kings, hitting in four in a row for Sactown. The Under is also 9-4 in the previous 13 meetings between these clubs, and 13-3-1 in the past 17 battles in Sacramento.

Pistons at Nuggets: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 9:10 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Nuggets 117, Pistons 102

Moneyline (ML)

The Nuggets (-770) are way too hefty of a play at this price level. The limit should be -170 or -180 for any singular moneyline plays not tied into a parlay. Laying over seven times your return on investment would just be a shoddy long-term gambling plan. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Nuggets to win returns a profit of $1.30.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

While the Pistons (+12.5, -115) covered last time out in Denver, they cannot be trusted in this one. Take the NUGGETS (-12.5, -106), who have posted a 5-1 against the spread mark in their past six as a home favorite while going 7-3 ATS in the past 10 after a non-cover.

The Pistons are just 8-13-1 ATS this season as a road dog, while going 11-12-1 ATS against teams with a winning overall record.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 215.5 (-115). Detroit has a 24-15 Over/Under record this season following a straight-up loss. The Over is also 9-2 in their past 11 against teams with a winning record, too.

It’s been all over all the time for the Nuggets lately, hitting in four in a row at home and four of the last five overall.

  • SG Luke Kennard (knee) out

Hornets at Pistons: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Monday at 11:35 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Hornets 118, Pistons 116

Moneyline (ML)

The HORNETS (+125) are worth a look on the road as short ‘dogs, as the Pistons (-150) are just too banged up to be favored against anyone right now. Yes, Charlotte is 0-5 straight up & against the spread across its past five, but this is the Hornets’ best chance in a while at a win.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Hornets to win outright would return a profit of $12.50.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The HORNETS (+2.5, -110) aren’t a bad play if you want a little bit of extra insurance, although taking them with the points won’t give you plus-money. The Hornets are 5-0 ATS in the past five meetings in this series, and 4-0 ATS in their past four trips to Motown.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 206.5 (-110) is a decent small-unit play, as neither team has been terribly mindful at the defensive end lately. The over is also 11-1 in Detroit’s past 12 as a favorite, including 7-1 in the past eight as a home favorite. The over is also 12-4 in the past 16 for the Pistons against teams with a winning percentage under .400.

For the Hornets, the over has connected in four of the past five overall, and four of the past five in which they are an underdog, too. The over is also 20-7-1 in the past 28 meetings between these teams in the Motor City.

People are so confused about the Andre Drummond trade

What are the Pistons doing?

Andre Drummond is reportedly set to become a Cleveland Cavalier… which makes absolutely no sense.

The Pistons were trying to get rid of Andre Drummond so they wouldn’t have to pay him a ridiculous amount of money this offseason to stay in basketball purgatory.

That makes perfect sense, right? They wanted to get something back for Drummond instead of just letting him walk for nothing. That’s prudent General Managing, if I do say so myself.

Now, let’s see, what did they get back… Brandon Knight? John Henson? And a second round pick? WHAT?

Fam… a ham sandwich would’ve been just as good. What are the Pistons doing?

The internet was trying to figure it out, too. Obviously, we’re all clueless.

This trade is super weird, man. Not only does it not make sense, it puts the Pistons right back on this weird wheel of mediocrity that they’ll run on forever and ever.

Oh no. The Pistons… the Pistons are a hamster.

Good luck this season, Pistons fans. You’re going to need it.

Pistons at Grizzlies: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11:20 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Grizzlies 125, Pistons 108

Moneyline (ML)

The Grizzlies (-357) are a little more expensive than I like on the moneyline, even though they’re a solid play at home against a team which just played Sunday afternoon and had to travel. AVOID.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (-7.5, -110) are the play on their home floor, as the Pistons (+7.5, -110) should have some tired legs after edging the Denver Nuggets in overtime back in Detroit Sunday afternoon before traveling. Look for Memphis to handle its business at home and bounce back after a disappointing loss last time out in New Orleans Friday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 227.5 (-110) is worth a look due to a handful of factors. First, the Pistons traveled after going to overtime Sunday afternoon against the Nuggets. Their legs should be plenty tired, leading to some shaky defense. Plus, these teams may or may not have enjoyed some Super Bowl festivities on television, and don’t think that won’t play a factor in their energy level on defense, too.
