Draymond Green will miss Jordan Poole’s homecoming against the Warriors and it’s such a shame

It’s a real shame things had to go down between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole this way.

What’s popping, family? Welcome back to Layup Lines. Thanks so much for rocking with us today. We appreciate you.

I wanted to chat a bit about the irony of Draymond Green missing Jordan Poole’s homecoming at Chase Center on Friday night when the Wizards play the Warriors.

Now, it’s obvious these two don’t like each other. The lingering effect from the punch hasn’t gone away. It’s been rehashed over and over again over the last year with a bunch of memes and jokes that have come with it. And, look, I get it. Looking back on it, there’s certainly some humor to find there. I mean, who among us didn’t laugh at this Draymond Green edit of Jordan Poole slipping on the floor? That’s funny, y’all.

But, honestly, thinking about the circumstances today made me kind of sad.

It’s not that Jordan Poole needed to stay in Golden State forever. It seemed obvious that he had ambitions that were probably never going to be quelled by playing his entire career with the Warriors. Poole getting dealt was for the best — especially considering the chemistry hit to the Warriors last season.

But what’s profoundly sad about this to me is that now, it’s clear, that Jordan Poole was never really the problem.

Poole is gone. The chemistry still stinks. Draymond Green is still having these violent incidents — except now they’re on the court instead of in practice. Poole might have been the issue of the day when Draymond Green socked him, sure. He could’ve said something or done something that drew Green’s ire. But it’s obvious now that he wasn’t the issue.

Now this moment shared between both of them has completely reshaped their careers. Green is an obvious Hall of Famer, but the first folks will talk about when they bring him up in, say, 10 years will probably be all of these incidents. He won’t be able to shake that.

For Poole, he’s turned into the NBA’s latest whipping boy. It’s easy to make fun of him now. Every time he makes a mistake on the court, it becomes a joke. Surely, you’ve seen the “I understand, Draymond” tweets by now. They’re crass and silly. But they’ll probably follow him for the rest of his career.

Maybe someday they’ll be able to break free from the stigma the incident between the two of them has left. Friday would’ve been an amazing opportunity to do so with them both on the court together at the same time.

Unfortunately, though, that won’t happen this time.

Where have all the buzzer beaters gone?

Mandatory Credit: Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

If it feels like you haven’t seen as many buzzer-beating shots to win games so far this season, you’re not tripping. You haven’t.

Ja Morant’s buzzer-beating layup to put the Pelicans away was just the second shot of its kind so far this season, per our Bryan Kalbrosky. We’re on pace for just about six (!!!!) buzzer-beaters so far this season. That’s criminally low.

“Just three days prior, Miami’s Jimmy Butler hit the only other buzzer-beater we have seen during the 2023-24 campaign. Based on how many games the NBA schedule has had so far, that means the league is on pace for around six buzzer-beaters this season.

That is significant according to the database at Basketball Reference, which tracks all of the shots made when the shooter’s team was tied or trailing and left no time on the clock after it went through.”

This is the weirdest thing. There’s no explanation behind it or nothing instructive as to why this isn’t happening. It’s just…not happening.

It’s strange — especially considering how competitive some of the games have been this season. There’s a lot of teams in the middle of the pack this year.

Maybe we’ll see more as the season progresses. I hope so, anyway. Bring me the drama!

Becky Hammon doesn’t have to explain herself

I can’t believe Becky Hammon took to Twitter to explain to folks why Jalen Brunson probably can’t be the best player on a championship team. It’s obvious why — he’s too small!

That’s exactly what she said. That’s what NBA history says, too. Yet, so many folks out there took exception to what she said.

Just like me, Meghan Hall is extremely annoyed by this. She wrote about it. Here are her words.

“In case you’re not familiar with Becky Hammon, as a player, she was a bronze Olympic medalist and a six-time WNBA All-Star. As a coach, she won WNBA Coach of the Year honors in 2022 and has led her team to back-to-back WNBA ChampionshipsShe’s also a Hall of Famer.

In other words, SHE’S QUALIFIED TO SPEAK ON BASKETBALL.

Yet, Thursday evening, Hammon clarified her comments because the internet had thoughts and took exception to a woman speaking on men’s basketball. Be better, internet. Be better.”

Couldn’t have said it better. Some of y’all need to relax, man. Let Becky cook. If y’all make Becky do this again we’re going to have to fight.

Shootaround

— I tried to pick out five games the Pistons could win to end their losing streak. I’ll probably be wrong. Again.

— Speaking of the Pistons, Cade Cunningham is in denial about how bad his team is. Poor Cade. Robert Zeglisnki has more.

— There’s a surprise at the top of the latest Bleacher Report Mock Draft. Charles Curtis has more here.

Joel Embiid is the MVP front-runner so far this season, but it doesn’t really matter yet. Bryan Kalbrosky has more.

That’s all, folks! Enjoy your holiday! Hope you have a fantastic one. Let’s chat again soon! Til then, peace.

NBA Twitter reacts to Suns trading for Bradley Beal: “This is the Nets all over again”

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to Bradley Beal’s trade to Phoenix.

According to Shams Charania, the Washington Wizards are trading Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns for Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, a handful of second-round picks, and multiple pick swaps.

As expected, NBA Twitter quickly reacted to the latest ‘Big 3’ in Phoenix.

NBA Twitter reacts to Bradley Beal trade rumors: ‘KD superteam? Nothing new’

Here’s what NBA Twitter is saying about the latest Bradley Beal trade rumors.

According to Shams Charania, the Phoenix Suns are ‘heavily involved’ in a potential trade for Bradley Beal with the Washington Wizards.

At the same time, the Miami Heat would prefer to land Damian Lillard over Bradley Beal, per Marc Stein.

Overall, the Heat and Suns have emerged as finalists to acquire the former All-Star in a trade.

Here’s what NBA Twitter is saying about the latest rumors.

The Bradley Beal era in Washington hasn’t been pretty but it’s still worthy of appreciation

Bradley Beal deserves a little love from Wizards fans

This is the on-site version of FTW’s daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Here’s Mike Sykes.

So, after spending 11 years with the Wizards, the Bradley Beal era in Washington may finally come to a close.

To be frank about it, this is coming a few years too late. I’m not even talking about a trade — I’m talking about the mere thought of seriously considering trading Bradley Beal. The organization has tap danced around considering a full tear down and a rebuild for years now, but this is long overdue.

The fact is, the Wizards haven’t won anything significant with the 3-time All-Star as the face of their franchise. Since trading John Wall — which should be considered the start of the Bradley Beal era — the Wizards have a paltry record of 104-132. That’s not good. There’s no way to spin that. That’s why this is happening.

RELATED: The 10 best trade suitors for Bradley Beal

But that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. Today, I actually want to give Beal a bit of appreciation. What he’s done in D.C. should not be frowned upon.

Let’s just look at the resume. If Bradley Beal is traded away from the Washington Wizards today, his 15,391 total points would fall just 160 points shy of Elvin Hayes as the Wizards’ all-time leading scorer. Only he and Hayes have eclipsed 15,000 total points for the team. He’s third all-time in minutes played (24,091), games played (695) and assists (2,972).

The Wizards haven’t won 50 games since the 1978-79 NBA season and have only won that many games 5 times in franchise history. But they came really close during the 2016-17 NBA season and Bradley Beal was a huge part of that team.

I’m not saying all of this to say that Bradley Beal should be absolved of the Wizards’ recent failures. No. Absolutely not. The team goes as he does and, well, the team has not gone anywhere. Even with poorly built rosters, part of that is on him.

He’s been injured in crucial stretches for Washington. He hasn’t shown up at points where the team has really needed him to. He’s very easily signed to the worst contract in the NBA (which isn’t his fault, by the way!). As a fan, watching Wizards basketball has never been more frustrating.

But Bradley Beal is still a really good player. He’s an All-Star who has done some incredible things in this league. And he’s absolutely one of the best Washington Wizards to ever touch the court in D.C.

He legitimately cares about this community. He wants to be here in Washington. He actually likes the city. He likes having his own team and he genuinely wants to win a title here. Though, ultimately, it doesn’t seem like he’ll get that shot to do that now, that’s a really cool thing.

No, he’s not John Wall. It’s always hard to follow up the first guy. But I think we can legitimately say Brad Beal has done his best here in Washington. And I think we should appreciate that.

Michael Jordan’s Wizards era finally gets some love with this new Air Jordan 3

Put some respect on Wizards Michael Jordan, y’all.

As a Washington Wizards fan, I can certainly understand how easy it is for people to overlook this team and it’s history.

I mean, let’s be honest about it. The team hasn’t won a championship or even made a conference finals appearance in multiple decades. The history just hasn’t been very good.

But there was that one time the team did have Michael Jordan. And it was a fun time, y’all! No, the Wizards still weren’t good. But MJ was there and he almost carried the team to the playoffs. He did it at 40 years old, too.

The best part might not have even been the basketball — it was also the cool shoes that Jordan was wearing while he was a Wizard. It was such a fun time.

And we celebrated that time on this week’s episode of Special Delivery with the Wizards Jordan 3s. Tap in and celebrate with us.

Kyle Kuzma tried (and hilariously failed) to pull off his best Steph Curry impression after shooting this 3-pointer

Kyle Kuzma is just out here guessing, y’all

There’s a lot you can say about Kyle Kuzma’s game, but one thing you can’t say is that he isn’t confident.

When he steps on the court he absolutely thinks he’s the best player out there no matter who else is on the court with him. It can be Bradley Beal or LeBron James. It doesn’t matter.

To take a page out of the book from the youths, Kyle Kuzma is HIM. In Kyle Kuzma’s mind, anyway. How else would he be able to pull off these pre-game outfits? You’ve got to love it, man.

Sometimes, that confidence manifests itself in some pretty hilarious ways. On Tuesday night against the Pistons, Kuzma had a solid game. He finished with 23 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, two blocks and a steal. Nothing too crazy, but all in all, a good game.

It just came with one hilarious lowlight when Kuzma thought he was Steph Curry.

He shot a corner 3-pointer by the Wizards’ bench and turned to his teammates before the shot could go in. But, as it turns out, the shot didn’t actually go in. It just clanked off the rim.

Hilarious.Wow. Yikes. Even Kuzma’s teammates couldn’t help but laugh at Kuzma in the moment. It was great.

What Kuz was trying to actually do was this.

Curry knew that ball was good from the moment it left his hands. Kuzma, on the other hand? My man was just out there guessing.

It’s hilarious. It’s also perfect and just such a Kyle Kuzma thing to do. Never change, Kuz. Please. Never change.

Russell Westbrook went from MVP to the ultimate NBA journeyman and it’s so painful to see

Hopefully, Russell Westbrook has finally found a new home

Welcome to Layup Lines, our basketball newsletter where we’ll prep you for a tip-off of tonight’s action, from what to watch to bets to make. Subscribe here to get it delivered to your inbox every afternoon

Howdy, folks. Welcome back to Layup Lines. It’s Sykes, once again, here to usher you into another weekend of basketball. Before that, let’s talk Russell Westbrook.

The future Hall of Famer will make his season debut for the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

It’s yet another benchmark of what can only be called a tumultuous season for Westbrook at this point. He’s gone from starter to sixth man to vampire to traded to buyout bargain, all within the span of a few months. That’s a journey that no player wants to go on.

This is the dark side of the “Super Max” deal — the contract Westbrook signed back in 2017 with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The designated player extension — what we know as the Super Max — was originally intended to be used as a tool for star retention. It allowed teams who already had stars in hand to pay them up to 35% of their cap space if they hit certain landmarks like winning an MVP or making an All-NBA team.

That’s the deal Westbrook signed after becoming an MVP. Yes, obviously, it’s been lucrative. But it’s led him down a perilous journey where he’s now playing for his fifth team in five seasons. No one wanted to pay him that money.

Nobody can blame the teams that have moved him for moving him. Paying 35% of the cap to a player who isn’t an All-Star isn’t smart — much less one that isn’t even a starter on your team.

You can find multiple contributors who might be better a better fit instead. Your team probably doesn’t get worse. It might even get better — the Lakers certainly seem to be seeing a boost in the aftermath of Westbrook.

But, man. Doesn’t this all just feel wrong?

I mean, Westbrook is absolutely going to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He’s one of the best five or so point guards to ever play the game and, officially, one of the best 75 players the league has ever seen.

To see him passed around like this just doesn’t feel right at all. It’s been hard to watch over the years, honestly. We’re in Olajuwon on the Raptors territory with him now. It was painful then and it’s painful now.

Westbrook’s diminishing skill here deserves bigger blame than his contract does. And, ultimately, there’s nothing we can really do about it. The Super Max is here to stay — and it’s also worked in a lot of cases. It kept Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard around with their teams. Steph Curry won a championship on a Super Max deal.

Hopefully, let’s just hope the buck stops here for Russ. He deserves a much better finish to his career.

The Tip-Off

Some NBA goodness from around the USA TODAY Sports network.

Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Irony can be so cruel, y’all. The Kevin Durant trade has worked out extremely well for the Nets so far.

Mikal Bridges is the brightest light the organization has seen in quite some time. He seems like he can be a leader for the squad in the future. So, of course, the team wants fans to get to know their new franchise face. In a video, the team asked Bridges who his favorite player was growing up. His answer, our Bryan Kalbrosky writes, was hilarious and sad all at once.

It’s Kevin Durant.

“Bridges had to pause before answering the question because he understood just how funny it was, and then he broke out laughing.

The former Villanova star, who found out he was traded from the Suns after a call from one of his former teammates, had a pinned tweet that said he never wanted to leave Phoenix.

What a cruel twist of fate: He only had to leave the only NBA team he had ever played for because he was traded for his favorite player — who he never got a chance to play alongside.”

That’s cruel, Basketball Gods. So cruel.

Bucks (-1.5, -120) vs. Heat (+100), O/U 219.5, 7:30 PM ET

Mandatory Credit: Michael McLoone-USA TODAY Sports

The Bucks and Heat know each other extremely well. Yes, Milwaukee is on a 12-game winning streak right now and are hitting their stride at the right time. But they’re 3-2 against Miami in their last 5 with some extremely close games played. With Giannis Antetkounmpo out due to his wrist injury, I think the Heat +1.5 feels like a pretty safe bet.

Shootaround

— Our Cole Huff wrote an incredible story on this trainer whose hoop dreams didn’t quite materialize but still landed him in a place of love. You should absolutely check this out.

— This act of kindness from James Harden is so incredible. Salute to him.

— The vibes seem immaculate, once again, for the Lakers. We’ll see how long all this lasts.

—LaMelo Ball needs his driver’s license revoked, dog. I’m sorry.

That’s all, folks. Enjoy the weekend.

NBA Twitter reacts to Lakers trading for Rui Hachimura: ‘Knowing the Lakers, Nunn will average 20 ppg with Washington’

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to the Lakers trading for Rui Hachimura.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers have finalized a deal to land Rui Hachimura in a trade that sends Kendrick Nunn, and three future second-round picks to Washington.

As expected, NBA Twitter reacted to the news, with some tweets directed at LeGM, aka… LeBron James.

Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges were hilariously trolled by Bradley Beal while arguing on the court

There’s something up with the Suns right now

There’s something up with the Phoenix Suns, man. Things just don’t feel right at all.

I don’t know if the Robert Sarver stuff and the team sale to Mat Ishbia has the team on edge, but the vibe just doesn’t feel right in Phoenix. We saw that on full display on Tuesday night in the team’s loss to the Wizards.

Of course, Devin Booker didn’t play in this game. And that’s a big part of why their offense wasn’t up to par. But the Wizards had lost 11 of their last 12 games heading into Tuesday night. This should’ve been a win for the Suns regardless.

But, instead, Deandre Ayton was busy arguing in the 4th quarter with Monty Williams and other members of the team during a timeout.

That argument also bled onto the court, too, and led to a hilarious moment with Bradley Beal. Mikal Bridges and Ayton continued arguing with Deni Avdija was on the free-throw line.

Beal caught wind of their argument and immediately began trolling by clapping as loudly as possible in their faces.

Again, the Wizards stink. And this is the team trolling the Suns on their own home floor. That’s…not a good look at all. It was hilarious though.

It reminded everyone of Joakim Noah back in the day. Fans loved it.

Kevin Durant made Daniel Gafford do a literal split with this crossover and the entire internet collectively lost it

Gafford might never get his ankles back after this one

Kevin Durant is the official owner of Daniel Gafford’s ankles. I’m not just saying that — these are the rules.

He completely snatched them from his body when the Wizards played the Nets on Friday night.

Durant caught Gafford on an island. The Wizards’ center isolated the Nets star at the top of the key and, from the very beginning, you knew it was a wrap for Gaff. But nobody could’ve known what was coming next. Nobody.

Durant crossed one time and had Gafford jumping. He crossed again, making Gafford jump back the other way.

Then he crossed one more time and, well, now Gafford can’t show his face on the internet anymore. My guy did a whole split before falling to the ground.

Seriously. Take a look, y’all.

This angle is worse.

It looks like Gafford is playing Twister, y’all. My goodness.

Oof. As For The Win’s resident Wizards fan, this one pains me to blog. But I must do what I must — it’s only right. A crossover this brilliant, yet this brutal, must be appreciated.

Of course, the internet roasted Gafford into oblivion.
