Denver’s Pepsi Center is now Ball Arena and fans wants to call it ‘The Jar’

No more of “The Can.”

Start getting used to the home of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche not being the Pepsi Center.

It’s now Ball Arena, after Ball Corporation — known for making cans and Mason jars — and of course there were so many jokes made on Twitter about the name of the home of a basketball team being named after the thing they play the game with.

But there are also calls for a nickname — apparently, some people may have been calling the previous incarnation “The Can”? Now, because of what Ball Corporation produces, fans out in Denver want to call it … The Jar!

Seriously:

Other people pointed out what we said above about basketball at Ball Arena:

Anaheim Ducks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Anaheim Ducks at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Anaheim Ducks (26-32-8) head West on their road trip to meet the Colorado Avalanche (40-18-7) at Pepsi Center in Denver at 9:30 p.m. ET Wednesday. We analyze the Ducks-Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Ducks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

John Gibson vs. Pavel Francouz

Gibson has dropped two straight decisions coming into Wednesday. He gave up four goals on 24 shots in a loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday, but is expected to get the nod once again. He is 19-26-5 with a .902 save percentage and 3.05 goals against average.

Francouz is on a six-game win streak with just 2 goals allowed in each of his last three outings. He is 19-5-3 with a .929 SV% and 2.24 GAA on the season.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 10:25 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Ducks 1

Moneyline (ML)

The Avalanche (-334) are a good bet to knock off the Ducks (+260), who were crushed in Chicago last night and will be playing in a back-to-back situation. Anaheim is 2-5 in the past seven games in the second end of a back-to-back situation. They’re also just 2-6 in the past eight overall and 19-40 in the past 59 on the road.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Avalanche to win returns a profit of $3, while a $10 wager on the Ducks results in a profit of $26.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE (-1.5, -110) are a good bet against the Ducks (+1.5, -110), who are limping to the end of their road trip. Colorado has won seven in a row, and it’s a perfect 4-0 in the past four against losing teams, too. The Avs are a good bet as a favorite, as well, cashing in 13 of the past 16. While Anaheim is 30-14 in the past 44 in this series, and 13-6 in the past 19 trips to Denver, take the home side. The Avalanche are a legitimate Stanley Cup contender and won’t be derailed by this bunch of Ducks.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (+105) is a good small-unit play based upon the Avalanche’s total trends. The Under is a perfect 11-0 in their past 11 games as a favorite, 5-0 in their past five at home as a favorite and 8-0 in their past eight against teams with a losing overall record. That makes an Under bet at plus-money a very good value.

Prediction

Raptors 113, Nuggets 108

Moneyline (ML)

This is a premier cross-conference matchup featuring the current 2-seed in the Eastern Conference, Raptors (+135), and the Western Conference’s third-seeded, Nuggets -161. Both teams come into this game after rough losses and embarrassing in their own ways. Toronto has dropped back-to-back games, including a 99-96 loss to the lowly Charlotte Hornets, but the Raptors have an excuse as they were without Ibaka and VanVleet.

Denver was handed a 132-103 beatdown by the Los Angeles Clippers in their last game, Friday. Wait on the injury report before betting this game. If the Raptors get their starters back I like them on the moneyline because they are the better team, and paying $161 for a $100 profit with a Nuggets win is poor value.

PASS ON THE MONEYLINE.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Let’s gamble on the possible health of Toronto starters and BET RAPTORS +3.5 (-115). They are a better non-conference team against the spread than Denver. The Raptors have an 11-8 ATS record against the West and the Nuggets have a 9-10-3 ATS record versus the East.

Toronto generally bounces back from a loss, going 7-1 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS loss. Plus, the Raptors are one of the best defensive teams in the NBA and the Nuggets are mediocre on offense. The Raptors rank first in opponent points per game, second in opponent field-goal percentage and first in opponent 3-point percentage. Denver scores the 20th most points per game and ranks 16th ranked 3-point percentage.

TAKE the RAPTORS +3.5 (-115).

Over/Under (O/U)

I have a slight lean toward the OVER 217.5 (-110) for several reasons. First, they average a combined 230.2 points per game on Sundays. Second, the Over is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings. Third, the combined Over/Under record of the officiating crew assigned to the game is 74-49 on the season. The one caveat is the banged-up Raptors have played to the Under in five straight games and have failed to score more than 100 points in four of those contests.

Pistons at Nuggets: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 9:10 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Nuggets 117, Pistons 102

Moneyline (ML)

The Nuggets (-770) are way too hefty of a play at this price level. The limit should be -170 or -180 for any singular moneyline plays not tied into a parlay. Laying over seven times your return on investment would just be a shoddy long-term gambling plan. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Nuggets to win returns a profit of $1.30.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

While the Pistons (+12.5, -115) covered last time out in Denver, they cannot be trusted in this one. Take the NUGGETS (-12.5, -106), who have posted a 5-1 against the spread mark in their past six as a home favorite while going 7-3 ATS in the past 10 after a non-cover.

The Pistons are just 8-13-1 ATS this season as a road dog, while going 11-12-1 ATS against teams with a winning overall record.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 215.5 (-115). Detroit has a 24-15 Over/Under record this season following a straight-up loss. The Over is also 9-2 in their past 11 against teams with a winning record, too.

It’s been all over all the time for the Nuggets lately, hitting in four in a row at home and four of the last five overall.

Washington Capitals at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Washington Capitals at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (36-15-5) travel to meet the Colorado Avalanche (33-16-6) at Pepsi Center in Denver at 9:30 p.m. ET Thursday. We analyze the Capitals-Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Capitals at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Braden Holtby vs. Philipp Grubauer

Holtby enters the game with a 20-11-4 record, 3.17 goals against average and .894 save percentage. Lately, it has been a challenge, as he has allowed four or more goals in seven of his past 11 starts, but it’s more a product of the defense struggling in front of him rather than poor tending. Just ask backup Ilya Samsonov, as he coughed up five goals last time out against the New York Islanders, but most just weren’t his fault.

Grubauer has been humming right along lately, going 4-0-0 with a 0.67 GAA across his past four outings, although two of those games were against the lowly Ottawa Senators and one against the struggling Buffalo Sabres. This will be a huge measuring stick game against his former organization. He allowed three goals on 32 shots in a 6-3 win in Washington Oct. 14, and who knows the Caps better?

Capitals at Avalanche: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 10:40 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Capitals 3

Moneyline (ML)

The AVALANCHE (-143) will have the brooms out looking for the two-game regular-season sweep, and they will get it. The Capitals (+120) are just playing shoddy defense lately, and they cannot be trusted.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Avalanche to win returns a profit of $7, while a $10 wager on the Capitals results in a profit of $12.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The way the Caps are performing on defense, the AVALANCHE (-1.5, +180) are a tempting play at nearly double the return on investment. The Capitals (+1.5, -222) would normally be a slam-dunk play, if not getting goals as an underdog, but on the moneyline. They’re in a tailspin right now and facing a high-octane offense that could roll up plenty of goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6.5 (+115) is worth a small-unit bet, as the Capitals offense remains dynamic, and they’re leaking oil on the defensive end. That’s a strong recipe for an Over result, especially against a Colorado offense which ranks No. 1 with 3.6 goals per game.

Blazers at Nuggets: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Blazers 117, Nuggets 112

Moneyline (ML)

Denver is currently first in the Northwestern Division and have beaten the Trail Blazers in both their meetings this season. The Nuggets were most likely motivated to get revenge on the Blazers for eliminating them in last year’s Western Conference Semifinals.

But, the Trail Blazers are the current ninth seed in the West and have climbed back into contention for the final playoff spot thanks to a 7-3 record over their last 10 games, which featured victories over the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers. Damian Lillard’s crazy hot streak has been the key to the Blazers’ recent success. Over the past 10 games, Lillard is scoring 41.6 points on .528% shooting, .500% from behind the 3-point line with 5.4 rebound and 9.3 assists per game.

Let’s ride with the hot hand, and the more healthy side, and MAKE A SMALL WAGER on BLAZERS +145. New to sports betting? Bet $50 on Blazers +145 to earn a profit of $72.50 if the Blazers win outright.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Since we are on Portland to win straight up, definitely BET BLAZERS +4.5 (-121). The more expensive price point for the Blazers line can be viewed as a good thing because that means the oddsmakers are trying to price bettors out of betting Portland. Portland is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games. Also, the Nuggets have struggled in similar betting situations this season: They are 0-5-1 against the spread when laying 3-4.5 points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Each of the last two Nuggets’ games have went Over and the Over has cashed in seven of the last eight Blazers games. The Blazers have scored 120+ points in their past six games and the Over correlates with the other handicaps since the Blazers are the eighth highest-scoring team in the NBA. Denver has a good defense—ranked fifth in opponent’s points per game and fourth in opponent’s 3-point percentage—but they’ll need to score points to keep up with the Blazers. Good thing for them the Blazers are ranked 26th in defensive rating.

BET OVER 224.5 (-121) is the right bet on the total of Blazers-Nuggets.

Jazz at Nuggets: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Jazz 105, Nuggets 96

Moneyline (ML)

The matchup to pay attention to in Jazz-Nuggets is between the two all-star centers. Jazz C Rudy Gobert is the back-to-back defending Defensive Player of the Year and is guarding ultra-versatile Nuggets C Nikola Jokić who strains defenses with his passing ability and court vision. Gobert has gotten the better of Jokić thus far in their careers:

[protected-iframe id=”ed291b7d293a7e693a862448eee574a1-159279292-75965725″ info=”https://widgets.sports-reference.com/wg.fcgi?css=1&site=bbr&url=%2Fplay-index%2Fh2h_finder.cgi%3Frequest%3D1%26player_id1_select%3DRudy%2BGobert%26player_id1%3Dgoberru01%26idx%3Dplayers%26player_id2_select%3DNikola%2BJoki%25C4%2587%26player_id2%3Djokicni01%26idx%3Dplayers&div=div_stats” ]

Another major reason the Jazz have the edge over the Nuggets is the injury report. Denver will be missing two bigs, and aside from Gobert, Utah has good defensive bigs backing him up in Ed Davis and Tony Bradley. Plus the absence of Murray could be huge for a Nuggets team needing someone in the backcourt to mitigate the damage Donovan Mitchell can cause. Murray has scored 20-plus points in his last two games against Utah, but Mitchell has scored 30-plus in his last two games overall and 46 points in the previous Jazz-Nuggets game, which was last season.

BET JAZZ (+100) on the moneyline. New to sports betting? Bet $100 on the Jazz to earn a profit of $100 if they win.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Since we are playing the Jazz on the moneyline at even money, we’re going to PASS on a line wager in this game. Since this game is essentially a coin flip, here’s an ATS trend that might win you over in picking the Jazz outright—Utah is 16-7 ATS in the last 23 meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 217.5 (-125) is the right bet if you’re playing the total in the Jazz-Nuggets game. This game should be a high-intensity affair with these teams tied for the third seed in the Western Conference, and it’s a primetime game. Furthermore, both teams don’t give up a lot points—combined they are giving up 212.7 points per game and each plays a slowed-down tempo. Denver is second to last in Pace of play and Utah is ranked 18th. Also, the Under is 14-2 in the last 16 meetings in Denver.

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Nuggets 125, Rockets 113

Moneyline (ML)

Consistency hasn’t been a thing with the Rockets or Nuggets recently;  Houston has won its last two games after losing four straight and Denver is 2-2 in its last four games. If Harden misses Sunday’s game, then who will buffer PG Russell Westbrook from another terrible outing in Denver? Westbrook has lost his last five games and scored fewer than 15 points in each of his last four games in Denver. Then again, it’s been Westbrook who has been pulling his end recently compared to a slumping Harden. The Beard is averaging 23 points per game on a .333 field goal percentage and .136 3-point success rate over his last five games.

Expect Denver to bring its Sunday Best against a Rockets team that generally ends its week in some sort of basketball hangover. The Nuggets are 7-2 in Sunday games with a plus-7.2 margin of victory, while Houston is 0-3 this season on Sundays with a minus-18.2 margin of victory. It has given up a whopping 131 PPG in those outings. Bet NUGGETS (-121) on the moneyline. New to sports betting? Bet $121 on the Nuggets to earn a profit of $100 if the Nuggets win outright.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS on an against the spread wager. A tad nitty of a play here, sure, but I don’t want to mess with the Nuggets (-1.5, -106) because we are paying only slightly more to take them on the moneyline and I’d rather just make that bet then fret the 1.5 points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Look to the officiating crew for the handicap on our total in this game. It’s a nationally televised game and I anticipate more whistles, more instant replay, and more meddling from the officials. The crew assigned to Rockets-Nuggets makes me LOVE the OVER 227.5 (-106); the referee crew’s Over/Under record on the season is 66-32 in all games and 14-8-2 in Rockets games this season. In addition, the average total of games officiated by this crew is 229.4 points and don’t forget about the Rockets’ Sunday split above—131 PPG given up!

Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Monday’s Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche matchup, with NHL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Detroit Red Wings (12-33-4) and Colorado Avalanche (27-15-6) square off at Pepsi Center Monday at 3 p.m. ET. We analyze the Red Wings-Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and betting tips.

Red Wings at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Calvin Pickard vs. Philipp Grubauer

It’s likely Pickard gets the starting nod against his former organization. He can’t be much worse than Jimmy Howard, who is 2-17-2 with a 4.06 goals-against average and .883 save percentage across 21 starts. Or can he? Pickard has struggled, too, going 0-2-0 with a 5.46 GAA and .797 save percentage in his one start and three showings to date.

Grubauer has managed a 14-10-4 record, 2.82 GAA and .910 save percentage overall, so whether it’s Pickard or Howard in between the pipes for the visitors, the home side has a clear-cut advantage at goaltender.

Red Wings at Avalanche: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 6:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Avalanche 6, Red Wings 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Avalanche (-334) are heavily favored, and there is no way to justify risking more than three times your return, even if it’s a near certainty that the home side will win this matinee battle.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE (-1.5, -125) will cost you a little juice even on the puck line. The Red Wings (+1.5, +105) have had a case of the Mondays, going 2-9 in their past 11 appearances on the first day of the week, and they’re just 13-38 across the past 51 road games.

For the Avs, they also aren’t too fond of Mondays, going 1-4 in the past five appearances. However, they’re 7-2 in the past nine against teams with a winning percentage of .400 or under. They’re also 4-0 in the past four against the Wings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+125) is plus-money, and it won’t take much for this to inch across the line. The Red Wings goaltending situation is a mess, and Colorado has the potential to nearly take care of the over all by themselves.

Prediction

Nuggets 121, Cavaliers 103

Moneyline (ML)

The Nuggets (-834) are heavy favorites, and you have to risk eight times your return. That’s just too expensive. AVOID.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The NUGGETS (-12.5, -110) host the lowly Cavaliers (+12.5, -110), a team they drummed last season by an average of more than 20 points per game in each of the two meetings. The beatings will continue, as C Nikola Jokic should be able to do whatever he pleases against a soft middle for the Cavs.

The Cavs are 1-4 ATS in their past five against winning teams. While the Nuggets are 0-4-2 ATS in the past six at home, they’re 7-2 ATS in the past nine at home after a road trip of a week or longer. The Nuggets are also 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER is the play as the Cavaliers offer very little resistance. The over has hit in five of the past seven in this series, and it’s 9-3 in Cleveland’s last 12 on the road. It hit in Cleveland’s overtime win in Detroit last time out. The over has hit in five in a row for Cleveland, too, and six of the past seven overall for Denver, while going 5-2 in the past seven at home for the Nuggets.
