On June 12, 2017, the Golden State Warriors became NBA champions with a gave five victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Oracle Arena.

With the Warriors’ 2020-21 campaign coming to an end after a pair of losses in the Western Conference play-in tournament, Warriors Wire is digging through some of the top team and individual moments along with memorable anniversaries in Golden State’s history.

June 12, 2017

After tearing through the Western Conference postseason with three consecutive sweeps, the 2016-17 edition of the Warriors had a chance at revenge against LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. In the 2016 NBA Finals, the Cavaliers sealed the title over the Warriors in a classic seven-game battle.

The Warriors opened the series with three consecutive wins, including a victory in Cleveland in game three. However, the Cavs notched a win over the Warriors in game four to shift the series back to the Bay Area.

With a frenzied crowd at Oakland’s Oracle Arena, the Warriors put on a show led by Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. Durant tallied a team-high 39 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the floor with six boards, five assists and a steal in 40 minutes.

Curry followed right behind his teammate with 34 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor with 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals in 41 minutes. Draymond Green notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in game five to go along with five assists and two steals in 44 minutes.

Although LeBron James dropped 41 points on 19-of-30 shooting from the field with 13 boards and eight assists, it wasn’t enough to slow down the Warriors on their way to another title.

Golden State became the 2017 NBA champions with a game five win over the Cavaliers, 129-120.

Before registering an appearance in the NBA All-Star game with the Washington Wizards, Antawn Jamison developed into a budding pro with the Golden State Warriors.

During his five-season stint in Golden State, the former No. 4 overall pick out of North Carolina averaged 20.2 points on 45.4% shooting from the field with 7.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and one steal per game.

With a steady list of impressive performances in the Bay Area on Jamison’s resume, his battle against future NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant might be at the top.

December 6, 2000

Coming off a loss to the Seattle Supersonics where he scored a career-high 51 points, Jamison wasn’t going to let another performance like that go to waste, even if it was against Bryant and the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Picking up where he left off against the Sonics, Jamison notched 19 points in the first half to give Golden State a 62-57 lead at halftime. While Jamison was cooking in the first 24 minutes, Bryant wasn’t far behind him, scoring 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting in the first half.

While Jamison added another 12 points to his total, Bryant exploded for 17 points in the third quarter alone. Bryant’s scorching third quarter pushed the Lakers to a 10 point lead heading into the final quarter.

With 12 minutes remaining, Jamison struck back, recording another 12 points to lead Golden State’s fourth-quarter comeback. With 41 points at the final buzzer, Jamison was able to push Bryant and the Lakers into an overtime period with the score locked at 107.

In overtime, Bryant and Jamison traded heavyweight power punches. However, with the help of Larry Hughes and Bob Sura, Golden State was able to seal the upset victory at the Arena in Oakland, 125-122.

For the second consecutive game, Jamison finished with 51 points on 21-of-29 shooting from the field with 13 boards, five assists, two steals and a block in 53 minutes. Bryant matched Jamison with 51 points on 18-of-35 shooting with eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals in 51 minutes.

Warriors Rewind: Kevin Durant drops 51 points vs. Raptors in battle with Kawhi Leonard in 2018

With Steph Curry and Draymond Green missing time due to injury, Kevin Durant registered a scorching stretch of games with a new season-high scoring mark in three consecutive contests.

After torching the Orlando Magic for 49 points on 9 points on 16-of-33 shooting from the field, the 10-time All-Star laced up against Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors.

Before the Warriors matched up with the Raptors in the 2019 NBA Finals, the two powerhouse teams traded heavyweight knockout punches during a regular-season tilt.

November 29, 2018

With his two All-Star teammates sidelined, Durant began to take over early against the Raptors, scoring 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting in the first half. The reigning NBA Finals Most Valuable Player was unable to get his long-distance shot to fall, missing all three of his attempts in the first two quarters.

After a big first quarter, the Raptors were able to take a nine-point lead into halftime over Durant’s Golden State squad. Despite an early advantage, Durant’s thrilling second-half effort helped push a late comeback from the Warriors.

In the second half, Durant ripped the Raptors for 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field. The Golden State forward knocked down 4-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc in the final 24 minutes.

Although the Warriors were able to force the game into overtime, Toronto’s rounded attack led by Leonard was to much for Kerr’s shorthanded rotation to handle. While only Durant, Klay Thompson and Jonas Jerebko notched double figures in scoring for Golden State, six different Raptors tallied 10 or more points.

Leonard led the way for Toronto with 37 points on 14-of-24 shooting from the field with eight rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

Despite the loss, Durant finished the game with his 2018-19 season-high in scoring with 51 points on 18-of-31 shooting from the field. Durant added 11 rebounds and six assists in 43 minutes.

After an extended absence from the court, the Golden State Warriors end their eight-month layoff from game action in December. The Warriors are slated to start the 2019-20 campaign on Dec. 22.

With only 72 games on the calendar, how the Warriors start the season will likely play a significant factor in their return to postseason contention.

In 2015, the Warriors started the season on a record-breaking clip.

November 24, 2015

Following a scorching undefeated start to the season after 15 games, the Warriors welcomed Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers to Oracle Arena in late November of 2015.

With the chance to make history, the Warriors delivered a stifling defensive effort to cruise by the Lakers with a 111-77 victory in Oakland.

Stephen Curry tallied a game-high 24 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field with nine assists, four rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes. Draymond Green added 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field with seven boards, five assists, two blocks and a steal.

Off the bench, Leandro Barbosa tallied 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three steals, a block and a steal in 17 minutes for Luke Walton’s rotation.

After surpassing the 1947-48 Washington Capitols and the 1993-94 Houston Rockets in the record books, the Warriors extended their winning streak to a 24-0 record. A 108-95 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks ended Golden State’s impressive streak through the NBA.

Long before Golden State drafted a center with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia edition of the Warriors were led by a Hall of Fame piece in their frontcourt during their 1960 campaign.

Along with his long list of accolades and achievements, Wilt Chamberlain registered a historic record-breaking performance against Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics in a 1960 contest.

Nov. 24, 1960

After starting the season 11-4 in 1960, the Warriors welcomed the defending NBA champion Celtics to the Philadelphia Arena. During the tilt against Russell and the Celtics, Chamberlain snatched an NBA record 55 rebounds.

Chamberlain also added 34 points on 15-of-42 shooting from the field with four assists in all 48 minutes. Despite Chamberlain’s record-breaking moment, it wasn’t enough to slow down the Celtics.

Russell notched a double-double effort of his own, scoring 18 points and grabbing 19 boards. Tom Heinsohn lead the way for Boston with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. Heinsohn notched nine rebounds and two assists.

Sam Jones and Bob Cousy also tallied 20 plus point performances in Boston’s 132-129 victory in Philadelphia.

Warriors Rewind: Purvis Short drops career-high 59 points vs. Nets in 1984

Long before Stephen Curry laced up his No. 30 uniform, the Bay Area was the home of a talented scoring forward out of Jacksonville State. In 1984, Golden State’s Purvis Short exploded for a sizzling career-best performance against the New Jersey Nets.

November 17, 1984

After nearly scoring 50 points against the Portland Trail Blazers one week earlier, Purvis Short registered a memorable effort against the Nets.

The 6-foot-7 forward notched a new-career high 59 points on a scorching 20-of-28 shooting from the field. Short lived at the free-throw line, knocking down 15-of-16 attempts from the stripe.

According to Justin Kubatko of Stat Muse, Short’s performance stands in a league of his own.

Via @jkubatko on Twitter:

Short added five rebounds and a steal in 40 minutes of action against the Nets. However, his career-high scoring night wasn’t enough to stifle the likes of Buck Williams and Mike O’Koren.

Although Jerome Whitehead added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, Golden State couldn’t slow down New Jersey’s collective attack.

Six members for the Nets scored in double-figures, including all five of New Jersey’s starting rotation. The Nets were able to put a damper on Short’s night, winning the contest 131-114.

Only once in franchise history has the Golden State Warriors landed the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft. Luckily for the Warriors, their second pick from the past was a home run.

Before Bob Myers and Steve Kerr are on the clock in the 2020 NBA Draft, Warriors Wire is highlighting one performance from Golden State’s lone former No. 2 selection.

November 14, 1966

Following four consecutive wins, the San Francisco Warriors welcomed the Detroit Pistons to the Bay Area for the second straight night. One day prior to their Sunday night tilt, the Warriors blew past the Pistons for a 135-96 win in San Francisco. Yet, the Pistons returned for a rare back-to-back matchup featuring future Hall of Fame talent Rick Barry.

The second-year small forward exploded for a game-high 44 points on 17-of-30 shooting from the field, with 11 rebounds and six assists in 44 minutes. Against the Pistons, Barry knocked down all 10 of his 10 trips to the free-throw line.

Barry’s All-Star teammate Nate Thurmond added a monster double-double performance with 20 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the field with 30 rebounds.

While Ron Reed also recorded an impressive double-double with 15 points and 20 rebounds for the Pistons, it wasn’t enough to keep up with the San Francisco Warriors.

San Francisco’s 115-104 win over the Pistons helped push their winning streak to five games. The Warriors would go on to win seven consecutive games before snapping their win streak with a loss to the Baltimore Bullets.

Warriors Rewind: Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant combine for 89 points vs. Suns in 2016

With no hoops on the calendar, Warriors Wire is rewinding the tape back through Golden State’s history for memorable matchups, standout performances and everything else in between.

In a 2016 matchup against the Phoenix Suns at Oracle Arena, the trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant turned in a combined effort that could only be replicated by Golden State’s rotation of All-Star talent.

With Devin Booker and the Suns in town, the Warriors displayed just how dangerous their scoring attack could be with a newly signed player like Durant roaming the court.

November 13, 2016

Coming off four consecutive victories, the Warriors welcomed Booker, T.J. Warren and the Phoenix Suns to Oakland. Although the Suns were able to lead the game throughout the first quarter behind the play of Warren and Eric Bledsoe, the Suns had no answer for Golden State’s group of All-Stars.

Curry tallied 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field with six rebounds, six assists and two steals in 37 minutes. Thompson matched his Splash Brother with 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting with two boards and an assist in 33 minutes. Both Curry and Thompson knocked down five 3-pointers each against the Suns.

Durant backed up his new teammates with 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field with nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks in 38 minutes.

Following high caliber performances from Curry, Durant and Thompson, Golden State’s fourth All-Star Draymond Green added a near triple-double effort with 14 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.

Curry, Thompson and Durant combining for 89 points helped push the Warriors past the Suns for Golden State’s fifth straight victory, 133-120.

Warriors Rewind: Steph Curry’s strong first-quarter leads to 46 point performance vs. Timberwolves in 2015

On his way to winning the league’s Most Valuable Player award in the 2015-16 season, Stephen Curry exploded in the first quarter of an early-season tilt against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

November 12, 2015

After starting off the season a perfect 9-0, Luke Walton and the Golden State Warriors had a chance to register double-digit victories early in the season. However, the Minnesota Timberwolves were standing in the way.

Despite seven different members of the Timberwolves putting up double-figures against the Warriors, it wasn’t enough to slow down Golden State’s All-Star point guard.

Curry tallied 46 points on 15-of-25 shooting from the field with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. The Splash Brother splashed 8-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc against Minnesota.

Watch highlights from Curry’s 46-point performance via YouTube:

Nearly half of Curry’s 46 point performance came in the first quarter. The Davidson product notched 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in the first quarter. Curry caught fire in the opening period from long distance, knocking down four triples in 12 minutes.

Curry’s effort against the Timberwolves was the third time through 10 games he’s scored over 40 points. His 46 points against Minnesota was the fourth-highest scoring mark of Curry’s 2015-16 season.

Outside of Curry, all five of Golden State’s starting lineup scored in double-figures.

Future Warrior Andrew Wiggins recorded a team-high 19 points on 7-of-7 shooting for the Timberwolves. Wiggins added five rebounds and two assists.

Golden State’s 129-116 victory extended their winning streak to 10 consecutive games to start the season. While 10 straight games is a significant number, it was just the start. The Warriors went on to win 24 games to open the season — a record for the best start in NBA history.

Warriors Rewind: Latrell Sprewell and Tim Hardaway combine for 60 points vs. Karl Malone and John Stockton in 1994

Early in the 1994-95 season, a budding star linked up with a proven veteran to carry Don Nelson’s group against a pair of future Hall of Famers.

November 11, 1994

Before their matchup with the Western Conference power Utah Jazz tipped off, the Warriors were understaffed. After suffering a knee injury in the offseason, Golden State was without Chris Mullin against Karl Malone and John Stockton.

However, a pair of Warriors combined for a steady performance against Utah’s pair of perennial All-Stars. Run TMC point guard Tim Hardaway tallied 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field with five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Helping with his 30-point effort, Hardaway got hot from beyond the arc, hitting 6-of-10 attempts from long distance.

Following his point guard’s lead, Latrell Sprewell notched 30 points on his own on 10-of-20 shooting from the field. Sprewell added seven rebounds, four assists and a block.

Outside of Sprewell and Hardaway, Ricky Pierce was the only other member of the Warriors to record double-figure scoring numbers against the Jazz. Pierce tacked on 21 points on 4-of-8 shooting in 29 minutes off the bench.

Despite double-doubles from both Stockton and Malone, the 60 combined points from Hardaway and Sprewell was enough to close out the Jazz, 112-104.

Sprewell’s 30 point night against the Jazz was the first of 13 games where he racked up 30 or more points. In 1994-95, Sprewell went on to represent the Warriors in the NBA All-Star Game for the second consecutive season.

After recovering from a knee injury in the previous year, Hardaway’s 1994-95 season was his final full season in Golden State before being traded to the Miami Heat at the deadline in 1996.
