PHOTOS: Texas backup QB Arch Manning in fall practice

Check out the latest photos of Texas backup QB Arch Manning during fall practice.

Arch Manning might be the most famous backup in college football. The newest Manning family quarterback, Manning starts his second year in the Texas program.

Nephew to Peyton and Eli, grandson to Archie and son of Cooper, Arch represents the third generation of Manning QBs. He played high school football at Isidore Newman in New Orleans, where he was the first freshman starting QB at the school in 40 years. He went on to start all four seasons at Isidore Newman.

Manning’s family tried to limit the media frenzy that accompanied Arch’s recruiting process. Arch didn’t do media interviews and ran a private Instagram account for just coaches and close friends.

He took visits to Texas, SMU, Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and Ole Miss. The 6-foot-4 quarterback committed to the Longhorns on June 23, 2022, and signed his letter of intent on Dec. 21, 2022.

An early enrollee, Manning played in the 2023 spring game. He entered the season third on the depth chart, behind returning starter Quinn Ewers and Maalik Murphy. He made his college debut on Nov. 24, 2023 during the third quarter of a blowout win against Texas Tech, completing 2-of-5 passing attempts for 30 yards.

Manning enters his second year on campus as the second string backup to Ewers. Murphy transferred to Duke.

Texas drops final game of the weekend series to Indiana 4-2

Base running woes and a rough sixth inning cost Texas the chance at a sweep against Indiana on Sunday.

Base running woes and a rough sixth inning cost Texas the chance at a sweep against Indiana on Sunday. The Longhorns dropped game three of the series 4-2 in what David Pierce called an “embarrassing loss.”

Texas was cruising early in the ballgame behind a great start from RHP Travis Sthele and a couple of early runs from the offense. Sthele was sharp through shutout five frames, bringing his fastball up to 95 mph.

The sixth inning gave Texas trouble as Indiana chased Sthele out of the game and capitalized against the Longhorn bullpen. Indiana tallied four runs with two outs to take a 4-2 lead.

Texas’ bats could not get anything going in the final four innings, partly due to some questionable base running decisions. Texas had four runners thrown out on the base paths, including three caught stealing. Coach Pierce’s aggressive nature did not pay off in Sunday’s ballgame.

A challenging task awaits Texas next as No. 1 LSU comes to town for a midweek matchup on Tuesday night.

Five players Texas should target in the transfer portal

These players could turn Texas into a contender next season.

The NCAA transfer portal continues to fill with talented players.

Almost 2,000 players from across the nation have entered the transfer portal as of Dec. 16. Navigating the wild territory of the portal is becoming a serious job for head coaches everywhere.

Texas finds itself in a much better position from a roster standpoint compared to this time last season. Between the strong core of production returning plus another top-five recruiting class on the way, Texas can afford to be more selective of players in the transfer portal.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff are ideally looking for plug-and-play starters at a few positions of need. Longhorn transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers, cornerback Ryan Watts and linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey were critical contributors to the 2022 squad.

Here are five players in the transfer portal Texas should target this go around.

Report: Texas and Oklahoma may depart to the SEC ahead of the 2024 season

Texas and Oklahoma’s move to the SEC may happen earlier than expected.

Texas and Oklahoma’s move to the SEC may happen earlier than expected.

Brett McMurphy of The Action Network reports the Longhorns and Sooners are “gaining momentum” towards joining its new league ahead of the 2024 season. A whole year prior to the initially expected timeframe.

Texas and Oklahoma’s departure from the Big 12 to the SEC back in July of 2021 sparked a wave of conference realignment across the nation.

The Big 12 Conference went out and acquired BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, leading to a new television deal for the league.

The Big Ten made a splash out west by landing the Pac-12’s most prominent brands in USC and UCLA.

A 2024 move would put the SEC on the same timeline as the Big Ten for expansion. This happens to be the same year the College Football Playoff moves to the 12-team format.
