What Clemson, Alabama and Tennessee all have in common

NCAA Basketball: The Clemson Tigers finished the 2023-24 season ranked No. 15 in the final USA TODAY Sports Top 25 men’s basketball poll. The Tigers joined Alabama and Tennessee in some rare company with that ranking.

With the final men’s college basketball polls tallied for the 2023-24 season, Clemson is in some rather unique company among the three major men’s college sports.

Clemson finished at No. 14 in the final AP poll and No. 15 in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll, both released Tuesday, April 9.

It is Clemson’s highest finish in the AP poll since 1997; the Tigers also finished 14th that year.

The Tigers’ run to the Elite Eight ended with the team finishing 24-12 overall. Among ACC teams, Clemson finished behind only North Carolina (29-8) and Final Four participants Duke (27-9) and NC State (26-15) in the polls.

National champion UConn finished its season 37-3 overall after a resounding 75-60 victory over Purdue on Monday night. UConn became the first school to repeat as national champions in men’s basketball since Florida in 2006 and 2007.

Clemson’s final ranking in the men’s basketball polls puts the Tigers in some pretty elite company.

As longtime Clemson Sports Information Director and broadcaster Tim Bourret noted in a social media post to X (formerly Twitter), only Clemson, Alabama, and Tennessee finished the 2023-24 seasons ranked in the final top 25 polls in both football and basketball — while currently ranked in the top 25 in baseball.

Clemson ranked No. 20 in the final AP and coaches football polls after last season’s Gator Bowl victory over Kentucky; Alabama was No. 5 with Tennessee at No. 17.

The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll. Tennessee is No. 4 in the poll while Alabama is No. 17.

UConn is back in the top spot in both the new AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll and USA TODAY Sports coaches poll.

The Huskies defeated Marquette Saturday night at Madison Square Garden to clinch the Big East Tournament. They also won the regular season conference championship and head into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 overall seed at 31-3 overall.

UConn is hoping to become the first men’s basketball program to repeat as tournament champions since Florida in 2006 and 2007.

Houston (30-4) fell to No. 2 after being blown out, 69-41, by Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game Saturday night. Iowa State’s win propelled the Cyclones (27-7) to No. 4. They moved up three spots in the AP poll and four spots in the coaches poll.

Purdue (29-4) remained at No. 3 in both polls, and North Carolina (27-7) came in at No. 5. Houston, Purdue, and North Carolina were awarded the other No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament by the selection committee Sunday.

Tennessee (24-8) dropped one spot to No. 6 after suffering a 17-point loss to Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament last week. Auburn (27-7), which won the SEC Tournament Sunday, climbed five spots in both polls to No. 7.

Marquette (25-9), Arizona (25-8), and Big Ten Tournament champion Illinois (26-8) rounded out the top 10 in both polls.

Duke (24-8) was the only ACC team ranked in the top 25 other than North Carolina. The Blue Devils checked in at No. 13 in the AP poll and No. 14 in the coaches poll.

Clemson (21-11) received no votes for consideration in either poll after its loss in the ACC Tournament to Boston College. The Tigers were awarded an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 6 seed and will play No. 11 seed New Mexico Friday at 2:15 p.m. EDT at Memphis’ FedExForum. The game will be televised by truTV.

Tar Heels move up in AP Top 25 poll for final regular season week

The UNC basketball program moved up in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll after beating Duke.

North Carolina’s win over Duke to close out the 2023-24 Atlantic Coast Conference regular season was big for a few reasons. Not only did it win them the regular season title outright but it also helped out their chances for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

As the Tar Heels prepare for the ACC Tournament this week, they will do so as the No. 4 team in the country.

The Tar Heels moved up in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll that was released on Monday. They are up three spots from No. 7 to No. 4 in the rankings, jumping back into the top 5.

This is the highest ranking for the Tar Heels in the AP poll since they were No. 3 just a few weeks ago.

As for the ACC, Duke fell two spots to No. 11 as the only other team ranked in the conference. Wake Forest did get 1 vote after winning on Saturday to potentially save their NCAA Tournament hopes but that’s it for the ACC in this poll.

The Tar Heels will be in action on Thursday to begin what we hope is a run to the ACC Championship game in Washington D.C.

Texas A&M receives double-digit votes in newest AP Poll after defeating Tennessee

After defeating Then No. 6 Tennessee on Saturday night, Texas A&M has received double digit votes in the newest AP Poll on Monday.

Texas A&M (15-8, 6-4 SEC) is on quite the hot streak in SEC play after defeating the then-No. 6-ranked Tennessee Volunteers 85-69 on Saturday night behind the stellar play of the Aggies’ elite guard duo, Tyrece Radford (27 points, five assists) and Wade Taylor IV (25 points 7 assists).

The days of sitting at 1-3 in the conference seem like a distant memory, as the Aggies have finally looked like the Top 15 team with National Championship hopes that entered the 2023-2024 season. With now five all-important Quad 1 wins, A&M is currently receiving some love from both the rankings, including the newest AP Top 25 Poll, earning 16 votes.

Oklahoma Sooners Women move up one spot in latest AP Poll

The Oklahoma Sooners are rolling through Big 12 play and moved up one spot in the latest AP Poll.

The Oklahoma Sooners women’s basketball team is arguably the hottest in the country right now. They’re in the midst of an eight-game winning streak and are 11-1 in the Big 12.

Last week, they beat TCU and Iowa State by an average of 15.5 points per game. With their success since conference play began, the Sooners entered the AP Top 25 last week and then rose one spot to No. 23 in this week’s poll after their 2-0 week.

Though Oklahoma’s all alone in first place, they still have a lot to prove to the AP voters, who have Big 12 teams Texas, Kansas State, and Baylor ranked ahead of the first-place Sooners.

Oklahoma split the season series with Kansas State, beating the then No. 2 Wildcats. They also hold a win over the Texas Longhorns

Oklahoma will have a chance to make a statement this week when they take on No. 21 Baylor and No. 24 West Virginia.

Others receiving votes: UNLV 41, Fairfield 29, Saint Joseph’s 4, North Carolina 4, Duke 4, Tennessee 1, Mississippi State 1, Nebraska 1, Michigan State 1

Clemson receives votes in latest AP Top 25 poll

A look at the AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll for the week of Monday, February 12.

An upset win over No. 3 North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a follow-up win at Syracuse was enough to garner Clemson some votes in the latest AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll released Monday, February 12.

The Tigers (16-7 overall, 6-6 ACC) took a big step toward solidifying their NCAA Tournament résumé when they won at the ‘Dean Dome’ last week, then followed it up with a gutsy win at Syracuse over the weekend.

Those two victories weren’t enough to vault the Tigers back into the Top 25, but they netted Clemson 57 votes from the various sportswriters and broadcasters who make up the poll.

It’s the fifth consecutive week that Clemson has remained out of the Top 25 after having been ranked No. 16 entering the year. The Tigers have gone just 5-6 since then, all against ACC competition. Clemson returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. EST when they host Miami at Littlejohn Coliseum. The game will be televised by ESPN2.

Defending national champion UConn (22-2 overall), winners of 12 straight games and unbeaten since December 20, remained atop the AP poll for the fifth consecutive week. The Huskies received 45 first-place votes.

Purdue (22-2) remained at No. 2, Houston (21-3) moved up to No. 3, and Marquette (18-5) and Arizona (19-5) each moved up three spots to Nos. 4 and No. 5.

Despite its loss to Clemson, North Carolina (19-5) remained the ACC’s highest-ranked team at No. 7. The Tar Heels dropped four spots from last week’s poll.

Duke (18-5) remained at No. 9, and red-hot Virginia (19-5) moved into the Top 25. The Cavaliers have won eight straight games entering the week, including their 66-65 victory over Clemson on February 3.

The Big 12 had the most ranked teams of any conference with six total. The SEC was second with five.

Elsewhere around the AP poll, No. 10 Iowa State and No. 11 South Carolina jumped four spots apiece. Wisconsin suffered the biggest drop, falling nine spots to No. 20 in Monday’s rankings. The Badgers had been ranked No. 6 just two weeks earlier.

Kentucky’s recent skid has seen the Wildcats drop from No. 6 to No. 22 in recent weeks.

Badgers drop a couple spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll

Badgers drop a couple spots in Top 25

After the Badgers men’s basketball team went 1-1 last week versus Penn State on the road (loss) and Indiana at home (win), they fell a couple spots to being the 13th-ranked team in the latest AP Top 25 Poll on Monday.

Wisconsin narrowly fell to the Nittany Lions 87-83 on Tuesday night at State College before getting back into the win column 91-79 over the Hoosiers at the Kohl Center on Friday night.

The Badgers entered last week as the 11th-ranked team in the nation, but they’ll now head to Minnesota for a matchup with the Gophers on Tuesday night at 6PM a couple notches lower on the totem pole.

Max Klesmit scored 20 consecutive points in the second half against Indiana and he’ll look to keep up his stellar play versus Minnesota.

Clemson unranked in the latest AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll

Clemson is unranked and no longer receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 update.

The Clemson men’s basketball team has slowed down of late and the Tigers have fallen down the rankings as a result.

After falling out of the AP Top 25 Poll last week following a three game skid, the Tigers remain outside the top 25 once again in the latest update. This update, however, Clemson is no longer receiving votes.

Their 93-90 defeat in double overtime against Georgia Tech was undoubtedly a disappointing outcome, and there’s no escaping that fact. Despite holding a substantial lead as the game approached its conclusion, the Tigers found themselves overpowered in the final minutes of regulation, resulting in the game extending to overtime. Unfortunately, they couldn’t bounce back and ultimately succumbed in the second overtime period.

While the loss to Tech left a bitter taste, their subsequent triumph against Florida State was excellent. In need of a win, the Tigers delivered, securing a convincing 78-67 victory on the road against the Seminoles. An ACC road victory is always a cause for celebration and a positive turn of events for the team.
