Jonathon Brooks receives prestigious awards following win vs Kansas

Texas’ Jonathon Brooks won the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Texas running back Jonathon Brooks was awarded the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player of the Week for his stellar performance against No. 24 Kansas. Brooks was also granted the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

He rushed for a career-high 218 yards last week, averaging just over 10 yards per carry and two touchdowns. Brooks also caught one pass for 23 yards.

For the third straight week, Brooks has eclipsed 100 rushing yards against Wyoming (164), Baylor (106), and Kansas (218).

Brooks has rushed for 593 yards in five games this season, making him the fourth-highest rusher in the country. Additionally, he has the 7th highest yards-per-attempt average in college football (with at least 60 attempts) at 6.9 yards.

It’s certainly possible Texas could take home the Doak Walker Award for the second consecutive year with Brooks, one of the best running backs in the country.

Jonathon Brooks is No. 3 in rushing yards in all of college football

Texas running back Jonathon Brooks had another spectacular performance against Kansas.

Texas running back Jonathon Brooks has had an exceptional start to the season. He recorded his third consecutive 100-yard game on Saturday against Kansas, rushing for 218 yards, averaging over 10 yards a carry and two touchdowns.

During the 2022 season, Brooks waited patiently behind Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. He has now emerged as the third-highest rushing yards leader in all of college football, despite playing one less game than Audric Estime from Notre Dame, who currently holds the top spot.

In each of the three games, Brooks has rushed for more yards than his opponents.

With the Sooners allowing 106 rushing yards per game this season, you can expect Brooks to carry the rock and try to lead No. 3 Texas to a second straight Red River victory over No. 12 Oklahoma.

Final numbers in Texas’ convincing win over Kansas

Take a look at the final numbers from Texas’ victory on Saturday.

No. 3 Texas showed up when it mattered to defeat No. 24 Kansas, 40-14. Despite only leading by six going into halftime, the defense had a  spectacular showing.

During the game, Kansas failed to convert any of their eight third down attempts against Texas’ strong defense, despite entering the game as one of the top FBS teams in third down efficiency.

Though an injury to star quarterback Jalon Daniels put a wrench in the Kansas offense, he does not play defense and wouldn’t have stopped the 661 total yards Texas put up.

Kansas did not have enough depth to compete with Texas’ dominating run game, as starting running back Jonathon Brooks rushed for a career high 218 yards.

The Texas Longhorns delivered a dominating performance, and here are the final numbers.

No. 3 Texas hands No. 24 Kansas its first loss, 40-14

Jonathon Brooks ran for 218 yards as Texas outgained Kansas 661 yards to 260.

Two teams entered Austin undefeated on Saturday. Kansas is no longer undefeated.

The Texas Longhorns (5-0) thoroughly defeated the Kansas Jayhawks (4-1) on Saturday. The score doesn’t tell the story.

Texas more than doubled Kansas’ total yards on the day, but luck helped the Jayhawks back into the game. Save for two explosive plays the Texas defense minimized the damage.

Kansas went 0-for-8 on third down for the game. It wasn’t for lack of opportunities. Jason Bean and Kansas receivers failed to connect on several completable plays. Even so, the Longhorns defense played a winning game despite some of the warts.

Offensively, Texas had its fair share of struggles in the passing game. There weren’t many struggles on the run. Running back Jonathon Brooks ran for 218 yards on 21 carries. The Longhorns totaled 308 rushing yards including two scores for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

The Longhorns did sustain an injury in the game. Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders suffered an apparent ankle injury early in the game. Sanders did not return to action.

In Sanders’ absence, Ewers and wide receiver AD Mitchell connected on 10 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. Fellow receiver Xavier Worthy added seven catches for 93 yards. Ewers finished the game 25-for-35 for 325 yards with three total touchdowns and an interception.

The Longhorns will take on the No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners next Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ABC.

RECAP: Texas leads Kansas at half, 13-7

Texas left several points on the board in the first half against Kansas.

It’s halftime in Austin. The Texas Longhorns lead the Kansas Jayhawks, 13-7. The margin should have been far wider.

The Texas offense had a better first half than the score might indicate. Jonathon Brooks exploded like we predicted. He crossed the 100-yard mark early in the second quarter as the Longhorns pounded the Jayhawks run defense into the ground.

For the most part, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers had a good half adding 162 passing yards to the rushing total. Despite the Texas offensive explosion, Kansas rode good fortune back into the game.

The Jayhawks’ only score came on a recovery of the team’s own fumble. Texas safety Jalen Catalon dislodged the ball from Kansas quarterback Jason Bean before his running back Daniel Hishaw took the fumble to the end zone.

Defensively, Kansas benefitted from opportunistic stops, but the stops were more on the Longhorns failures than the Jayhawks’ making plays. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian probably would have liked to have called less bubble screens and stuck to the run on the day.

Texas scored 13 points on 342 total yards in the first half. It wasn’t the level of efficiency you would like to see from the No. 3 team in the country.

The Jayhawks baited Ewers into his first interception of the season at the end of the half. Ewers ended early action 14-for-18 with 162 passing yards and an interception.

Despite all the missed opportunities the Longhorns lead at half, 13-7. The team will need a much better second half to ensure a win.

WATCH: Texas QB Quinn Ewers runs for 30-yard touchdown against Kansas

Ewers got his fourth touchdown run to kick off the Kansas game.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is using his wheels this season. Just a week after a long touchdown run against Baylor, Ewers took off for a 30-yard scamper for six points.

The run came in response to a blitz that forced Ewers to evacuate the pocket. The Texas signal caller responded by aggressively stepping up in the pocket and heading toward the end zone.

Ewers’ ability to extend plays and break down defenses for explosive runs gives opponents something else to worry about against Texas. The added dimension has the Longhorns offense moving the chains and putting more points on the board.

Blitzing on Ewers might not pay off for opposing defenses moving forward. It didn’t on his 30-yard touchdown run. The play could make opposing coordinators think twice about the pressures they call.

The play marked the second-year starter’s fourth touchdown run of the season and raises his total touchdown tally to 13 on the season.
