Texas ex DeMarvion Overshown in “good spirits” after ACL injury

DeMarvion Overshown is poised to bounce back.

Former Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown saw his rookie season get cut short before it could even get started.

The third-round pick suffered a torn ACL in the first quarter of Dallas’ Saturday night preseason game at Seattle on what appeared to be fluke result on a routine play. The news is very unfortunate for Overshown who Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy declared on Monday was the “star of the rookie class.”

While this is a setback for his young career, according to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian who spoke to the media on Monday about a conversation he had with Overshown, the former Longhorn is doing well.

“I reached out to him yesterday, and he responded right back,” Sarkisian said about Overshown. “It’s a real bummer. I hate it for him; it was odd. I actually talked to Dan Quinn earlier in the week, and he was raving about him, of how well he was doing, and he was, we all were seeing it.”

He continued saying:

(Overshown) is actually in really good spirits. I talked to him yesterday before his MRI, and he reached back out afterward, so he’s in good spirits; he’s in good hands.”

Overshown will have to wait a while to make his debut and pick up where he left off.

Multiple teams conducting pre-draft visits with Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown

DeMarvion Overshown is gaining interest ahead of the NFL Draft.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, multiple NFL teams are set to meet with Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown for pre-draft visits.

The Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans are among the teams meeting with the standout linebacker.

Overshown earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in his senior season in 2022. He set career highs with 96 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks, helping anchor a much-improved Texas defense.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound linebacker moves exceptionally well as a former safety. Overshown’s athleticism allows him to play sideline to sideline to a high level against offensive attacks. He recorded an impressive 4.56-second 40-yard dash and 10-foot-4 broad jump at the 2023 NFL Combine in March.

Experts believe Overshown will get selected as a late day two or early three pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Texas Football: Five Longhorns to watch vs. No. 13 Kansas State

Who can slow down Deuce Vaughn on Saturday?

No. 24 Texas travels to No. 13 Kansas State for a top 25 Big 12 Conference matchup this week.

The Longhorns enter this game as a slight favorite despite being the lower-ranked team and playing on the road. Texas is looking for a bounce-back performance after losing to Oklahoma State two weeks ago.

Kansas State enters on the opposite side of the spectrum following a 48-0 dismantling of Oklahoma State. It was the most complete performance of the year for the Wildcats.

Recent series history favors Texas against Kansas State as the Longhorns have won five straight games in the matchup.

Steve Sarkisian is looking for his second true road win in his Texas tenure, the last being vs. TCU in Oct. of 2021.

This weekend provides a huge oppurtiny for Texas to prove they can handle adversity and have taken the next step as a program.

Here is a look at five Longhorns to keep an eye on against Kansas State on Saturday night.

Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown’s targeting appeal rejected by NCAA

Texas will be without its senior leader for the first half against Texas Tech.

Texas star linebacker DeMarvion Overshown seemingly made one of the most exciting plays of the game against UTSA. Overshown sacked the elusive Frank Harris Jr. to force a huge punt late in the football game.

The stop was a major turning point of the game in favor of Texas, but the refs had other plans.

Overshown was called for a controversial targeting penalty which extended the UTSA drive and got him ejected from the game. Texas was able to hold on for a 41-20 victory over UTSA with a strong second-half effort.

The Longhorns will be without Overshown for the first half of the Big 12 opener against Texas Tech on Saturday. Steve Sarkisian appealed Overshown’s targeting call to the NCAA, but the decision ultimately remained.

Linebackers Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey and Jaylan Ford are expected to see more playing time in Overshown’s absence. Sarkisian feels good about the rest of the linebacker core stepping up in his place.

“We’ve got a great deal of confidence in Tucker-Dorsey. This guy has played a ton of football. He stepped in Saturday and played really good for us. We’ll be OK. Obviously, DeMarvion is a heck of a player. He’s a playmaker for us and can do a lot of different things. But we’ll be OK. Would we love to have Agent Zero out there for us? For sure. But if we don’t, we’ll get through the half and we’ll play good football. We’ve got enough good player to get us through the half and then get him back in the second half.”

Texas faces its first road test of the season as they travel to Lubbock for a matchup against Texas Tech.

Texas Football: Five defensive players to watch vs. Alabama

Texas needs big games from these defensive players against Alabama.

Texas’ defense looked like an improved unit in their season-opening win over UL Monroe. The Longhorns played fundamentally sound football and did a great job limiting explosive plays.

While the performance against UL Monroe inspires some confidence moving forward, Texas faces a huge test this week against No. 1 Alabama.

The Crimson Tide offense is led by 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and a deep group of weapons at the skill positions. Young seems to have not skipped a beat from last season as he accounted for 300 yards and six touchdowns in Bama’s 55-0 win over Utah State.

Alabama is breaking in multiple new faces at the wide receiver position. Traeshon Holden and Jermaine Burton each hauled in two scores and look comfortable with Young in the process.

Georgia Tech transfer Jahmry Gibbs is the lead running back for Nick Saban’s squad. He is a do-it-all player with the ability to make a difference in the running game and passing attack.

Texas’ defense has a tough task in front of them trying to slow down the dynamic Alabama offense. Here are five Texas defensive players to keep an eye on this week against the Tide.

Five takeaways from Texas’ 52-10 win over UL Monroe

Ja’Tavion Sanders is a future star.

Texas took care of business on Saturday night in the season opener against UL Monroe. The Longhorns controlled the game from start to finish en route to a 52-10 victory.

Texas special teams’ unit set the tone for the game early on. D’Shawn Jamison, normally known for his return skills, blocked a punt UL Monroe punt which was scooped and scored by Keilan Robinson.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers had a nice debut after an early interception. Ewers finished throwing for 225 yards and two touchdowns while completing 67% of his passes. Steve Sarkisian would like to see him connect better on his deep ball, but it was an overall good start to Ewers’ Texas career.

Ja’Tavion Sanders was the best player on the field for the Longhorns. The tight end caught six passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. He proved great support as a run blocker as well. Sanders looks the part of a future star.

UL Monroe provided Texas a good tune-up before its heavyweight matchup with No. 1 Alabama next week.

Here are five takeaways from Texas’ season-opening victory over UL Monroe.

Texas’ DeMarvion Overshown is getting more looks at EDGE

DeMarvion Overshown could be the answer to Texas’ pass rush issues.

Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is back for one final season with the Longhorns. The fifth-year senior is planning on playing a multitude of roles for the Texas defense in 2022.

One spot where Overshown could provide a spark is at the EDGE position. The Longhorns struggled to create duress on opposing quarterbacks during the 2021 campaign. Texas ranked near the bottom of the Big 12 in both sacks and quarterback pressures.

Fellow pass rusher Ovie Oghoufo has been providing Overshown some tips about the position change.

Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski can get creative with the ways he dials up his defensive front. Giving Overshown more time at EDGE allows junior Jaylan Ford and James Madison transfer Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey more opportunity at linebacker. Two guys who Overshown mentioned as stand-out players during Big 12 Media Days.
