Bills survive scare from Dolphins, advance to AFC divisional round

Survive and advance for Buffalo.

It seemed like the Buffalo Bills had things on easy mode Sunday when they jumped out to an early 17-0 lead against the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Wild Card match-up.  Although the day would end successfully for Buffalo, it wouldn’t come without plenty of drama along the way.

Miami, playing with backup quarterback Skylar Thompson, scored 17-straight points to tie the game up shortly before halftime.  Buffalo was able to answer with a field goal late in the half to take a 20-17 lead to break.

A turnover for a touchdown gave Miami a 24-20 advantage early in the second half but Buffalo’s defense tightened and just as importantly, the Bills didn’t turn the ball over the rest of the way, after doing so four times to that point.

As a result the Bills survived as a 34-31 winner, despite entering the game as a nearly two-touchdown favorite.  With the win the Bills advance to the divisional playoffs next weekend as the AFC’s second seed while Miami heads home with a 9-9 overall record this season.

The loss means the end of the road for the 2022 season for former Notre Dame standouts Liam Eichenberg and Durham Smythe while no former Golden Domers advanced with the Bills.

Dolphins downgrade LG Liam Eichenberg to OUT vs. Bills

It would make sense to see Robert Jones slide back in.

Heading into the weekend, the Miami Dolphins had four offensive linemen whose statuses were in question for the wild-card matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

Offensive tackles Terron Armstead (toe/pec/knee/hip), Kendall Lamm (ankle) and Brandon Shell (knee/ankle) were all questionable for the contest with left guard Liam Eichenberg (hand) was listed as doubtful.

However, on Saturday, Eichenberg was downgraded to out, as he didn’t travel with his teammates to Orchard Park, New York, according to Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald.

With so many injuries along the offensive line, it’s not exactly clear who’s going to play where, but Robert Jones had filled in at left guard for Eichenberg when he missed time earlier in the season, so it might be safe to assume that he does so again.

Dolphins place Myles Gaskin on IR, activate Liam Eichenberg

Miami’s down to just three running backs now.

The Miami Dolphins have been missing two starters from their Week 1 offensive line with Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg sidelined with injuries. However, they’ll be getting some help back soon.

The team announced on Tuesday that they’ve activated Eichenberg from the injured reserve after missing the last six games. The former Notre Dame offensive lineman had to be activated this week, or he would’ve been forced to miss the remainder of the season. However, it’s unclear whether or not he’ll getting the starting left guard spot back from Robert Jones.

To make room for Eichenberg on the roster, Miami opted to place running back Myles Gaskin on injured reserve, ending his regular season. He could return if the Dolphins make it to the AFC Championship.

Gaskin finishes his 2022 rushing for just 26 yards on 10 carries and bringing in four receptions for another 28 yards.

For now, they’ll continue to rely on Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr., and Salvon Ahmed can serve as depth.

Dolphins designate offensive lineman for return from IR

He’s been on IR for over a month.

With the Miami Dolphins losing left tackle Terron Armstead and right tackle Austin Jackson in their Week 12 matchup against the Houston Texans, they’ve been down three starting offensive linemen from the beginning of the year.

Now, it looks like one may be close to returning, as the Dolphins have officially designated left guard Liam Eichenberg to return from injured reserve. He began practicing on Wednesday at UCLA, but it’s unclear whether he’ll return to action this week.

Head coach Mike McDaniel has been cautious with injuries in his short tenure in South Florida, so it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the Dolphins continue to start Robert Jones at left guard for another game or two before giving Eichenberg his spot back.

If Miami can get Armstead and Eichenberg back on the left side things will be a lot easier for Tua Tagoviloa and company.

Dolphins place Liam Eichenberg on IR, activate Austin Jackson

One offensive lineman in and one out.

With all of the injury issues that the Miami Dolphins have dealt with through eight games, the team made a few roster moves on Tuesday.

The Dolphins announced that they’ve placed left guard Liam Eichenberg on injured reserve after it was reported that he suffered an MCL injury during the Week 8 game vs. the Detroit Lions. Eichenberg will be forced to miss four games, but that stretch also includes a bye week, so the earliest that he could return would be Dec. 11 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14.

Miami is also returning Austin Jackson from injured reserve, as an ankle injury landed him there after the season opener against the New England Patriots. It’s unclear when Jackson will actually return to action, but when he gets back, there’s a chance that he could slide back in at left guard with Eichenberg out and Brandon Shell performing pretty well at right tackle.

Practice squad quarterback Reid Sinnett was also released, now that all three quarterbacks on the active roster are healthy.

Mike McDaniel updates on LG Liam Eichenberg, RT Austin Jackson

Two of Miami’s offensive linemen have been dealing with injuries.

The Miami Dolphins have been dealing with some bad injury luck halfway through their 2022 campaign, but the team got some good news on Monday.

First, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that left guard Liam Eichenberg, who was carted off of the field during Sunday’s victory over the Detroit Lions, suffered an MCL injury. It was originally feared that the injury could’ve been a season-ending injury, but he should be able to return from this.

During his media availability, head coach Mike McDaniel provided an update to the report.

“I can confirm that it was definitely on the positive side of bad news that he got hurt, but it was a pleasant surprise that we were getting various opinions,” McDaniel said. “We know he was going to miss some time, but there wasn’t an injury to all the CL’s, as they call them in the biz as we kind of feared. We’re getting more information. We know he’s going to be out. We just don’t really know how long it’ll be.”

On the right side of the line, Austin Jackson has been held out since Week 1 with an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve. Jackson has just a few days remaining on his 21-day window to be activated, and if he isn’t he’ll miss the remainder of the year.

However, McDaniel said that he’ll return to practice again this week.

“Some point this week obviously he will return,” McDaniel said. “We’re just going to be taking it day by day and for me, I’m going to be ultra-conservative and see it as very unlikely that I would let him go out there and play this week, but that process of returning will start and we’ll take it day by day with that.”

There’s no guarantee that Jackson gets his job back when he’s healthy. Brandon Shell, who has spent the last few games at right tackle, has looked like a solid veteran in that role.

Dolphins LG Liam Eichenberg carted off vs. Lions

Miami loses another starter.

The Miami Dolphins can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries.

During the third quarter of their Week 8 matchup against the Detroit Lions, second-year left guard Liam Eichenberg was carted off of the field. The former Fighting Irish offensive lineman did well to hold his blocker off of Tua Tagovailoa on the play that he was injured, resulting in a receiving touchdown for tight end Mike Gesicki.

The team announced that the injury is to Eichenberg’s knee, and he will miss the remainder of this game.

Miami will have a decision to make regarding who will take his spot. They may opt to slide Michael Deiter, the former starting center, in at left guard. There’s also a chance that center Connor Williams moves back to his natural position with Deiter coming back at center.

Dolphins wind up with fourth-and-28 after penalty-filled drive

On their second drive against the Vikings, the Dolphins wiped out 67 yards in plays with penalties, and wound up with fourth-and-28.

The Miami Dolphins are down to third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson against the Minnesota Vikings with Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater going through the NFL’s concussion protocol, but Thompson wasn’t the problem on Miami’s second offensive drive of the day.

Penalties on just about everybody else on the offense? That was the problem. Vikings punter Ryan Wright bombed a 73-yard punt from the Minnesota seven-yard line to put the ball at the Miami 20-yard line, and that’s where the trouble started. Thompson hit Jaylen Waddle on a 30-yard deep pass and matched up with Tyreek Hill on a nine-yard catch, and all of a sudden, the Dolphins had first-and-10 at the Minnesota 24-yard line.

Then, guard Robert Hunt was busted for a false start, which put the ball at the Minnesota 29 and gave Miami first-and-15. Then, in short order… tackle Connor Williams was given a five-yard penalty for an ineligible downfield pass, left guard Liam Eichenberg was given an offensive holding call, fullback Alec Ingold was flagged for offensive pass interference, and receiver Trent Sherfield was caught on an offensive pass interference call.

Those penalties canceled a total of 67 yards, and at the end of the drive, the Dolphins had fourth-and-18 from the Minnesota 42-yard line, and it obviously was time for Thomas Morstead to punt.

Not the ideal way for things to go for Mike McDaniel’s team.

Three areas of intrigue for Dolphins vs. Buccaneers preseason opener

A few things that might pique Dolphins fans’ interest.

The Miami Dolphins kick off their preseason slate Saturday night in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers. It will be Mike McDaniel’s inaugural in-game action as head coach, as he officially becomes the 11th (14th including interims) coach in franchise history.

While this is his 16th season as a coach in this league, McDaniel is a rookie as head coach and enters 2022 with a Dolphins team on a two-year winning record streak, despite missing the postseason both years. The Dolphins are looking for their first appearance in the playoffs since 2016 and seeking a victory in the tournament for the first time since the 2000 season.

In the 10 seasons Miami has played under a new coach, the franchise is 75-81 with four coaches leading the Dolphins to the playoffs in their first season – Don Shula in 1970, Dave Wannstedt in 2000, Tony Sparano in 2008 and Adam Gase in 2016.

McDaniel and the Dolphins will face a Buccaneers team just two seasons removed from a Super Bowl victory, and while they may be without Tom Brady because of personal reasons, this is still a strong litmus test for this Miami – a team that enters 2022 with their highest expectations in nearly two decades.

Here are a few things to be focused on during the contest.
