Panthers’ updated practice squad after Tuesday’s return of Matthias Farley

S Matthias Farley is back in the fold for the Panthers’ practice squad.

The sideline will look extra different for the Carolina Panthers this weekend.

As the team continues its transition from head coach Frank Reich to interim head coach Chris Tabor, they made an adjustment to their practice squad this afternoon. In is safety Matthais Farley, who has played five games for the Panthers this season, and out is defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence.

So, let’s take an updated look at the 15-player group:

Panthers bring back Matthias Farley to practice squad

The Panthers have added S Matthias Farley back to their practice squad.

After yet another loss, the Carolina Panthers will be forced to deal with even more injuries. So, they made an adjustment on their practice squad this afternoon to patch themselves up.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team has signed safety Matthias Farley back to the group. The 31-year-old defender, who was released back on Nov. 15, has appeared in five games for Carolina this season.

Farley initially signed on with his hometown team on Sept. 19. The Charlotte, N.C. native spent his seven previous NFL seasons between the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders.

He recorded nine total tackles over his five outings, which included a start in Week 6 against the Miami Dolphins. Farley’s return comes after starting safety Vonn Bell exited this past Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans with a shoulder injury.

To make room for Farley on the practice squad, the Panthers released defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence—who joined the team on Nov. 10.

Panthers’ updated roster following Monday’s moves

Eku Leota is in while Matthias Farley and Jordan Matthews are now out. Here’s what the Panthers’ active roster currently looks like:

The Carolina Panthers began their Monday by signing outside linebacker Eku Leota to their active roster. Now that the undrafted rookie has used up all three of his elevations from the practice squad, he finally has himself a certified spot on the program.

That, however, wouldn’t be the only move the team would make.

Soon after, the Panthers released safety Matthias Farley and tight end Jordan Matthews. Those vacancies may have been made available for cornerback Jaycee Horn and tight Ian Thomas, who were both designated to return from injured reserve today.

So, with all that tinkering now finalized, here is an updated look at Carolina’s current active roster:

Panthers release 2 players on Monday

The Panthers have released S Matthias Farley and TE Jordan Matthews.

On Monday, the Carolina Panthers designated both cornerback Jaycee Horn and tight end Ian Thomas to return from injured reserve. So, they may need a couple of open spots on the active roster pretty soon.

Unfortunately, those vacancies may have just been made available at the expense of two players—as the team announced the releases of safety Matthias Farley and tight end Jordan Matthews this afternoon.

Farley has appeared in five games for the Panthers this season, primarily on special teams. He recorded a season-high 63 defensive snaps in the Week 6 loss to the Miami Dolphins, where he started in place of an injured Vonn Bell.

The Charlotte, N.C. native was first signed to the team back on Sept. 19 as a member of the practice squad.

Matthews, who was signed from the practice squad this week, is now gone after just one outing. He played 19 snaps on special teams in the Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Panthers sign Matthias Farley to roster, elevate Eku Leota for Week 9

Ahead of their Week 9 outing, the Panthers have signed S Matthias Farley to their active roster and elevated OLB Eku Leota from their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers just had to place yet another key defender on injured reserve, as outside linebacker Justin Houston was shelved this afternoon due to a hamstring issue. So now, they’ve signed a player to take his place.

Filling the 53rd spot on the active roster will be safety Matthias Farley, who was inked from the practice squad following the Houston news. The 31-year-old veteran and Charlotte, N.C. native will now, of course, be eligible to play in the team’s Week 9 contest against the Indianapolis Colts.

Farley has appeared in three games for Carolina this season, having notched 31 snaps on special teams on 63 on defense. All 63 of those defensive looks came in the Week 6 loss to the Miami Dolphins, where Farley recorded the unit’s second-lowest overall grade from Pro Football Focus.

Joining him on the come-up will be rookie outside linebacker Eku Leota, who has been elevated for the second straight Sunday. Leota made his NFL debut in last week’s win over the Houston Texans, seeing six snaps on defense and eight on special teams.

Panthers elevate 2 players for Week 8 matchup vs. Texans

The Panthers are elevating OLB Eku Leota and S Matthias Farley for their Week 8 matchup against the Texans.

In what’s become a painfully recurring theme this season, the Carolina Panthers needed to bring up some reinforcements for their ailing defense.

This week, with the 3-3 Houston Texans coming to town, the team has elevated rookie outside linebacker Eku Leota and safety Matthias Farley from the practice squad. Darin Gantt of Panthers.com was first with the news on Saturday afternoon.

Leota, an undrafted free-agent signing out of Auburn University, may be making his NFL debut in Week 8. That could hinge on the status of fellow backer and two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Brian Burns, who is listed as questionable for the contest due to an elbow injury.

Farley, with safety Vonn Bell already having been ruled out, will be making his third trip up. He played 63 defensive snaps in the Week 6 loss to the Miami Dolphins, the third-highest total for the unit.

Being that Sunday will mark his third call-up, the 31-year-old veteran will either have to be waived or signed to the active roster heading into Week 9.

Top takeaways from Panthers’ snap counts in Week 6 loss to Dolphins

Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard took advantage of his featured role in Week 6.

A slew of injuries have caused the Carolina Panthers to make do in recent weeks. And unfortunately, they just had to make do against one of the toughest matchups you can find in the NFL right now.

So, let’s try to dive into some of their most notable and telling snap counts from Sunday’s 42-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Panthers elevate 2 players for Week 6 matchup vs. Dolphins

The Panthers will be bringing S Matthias Farley and G Justin McCray with them to Miami.

The Carolina Panthers are taking a pair of reinforcements with them to South Beach for Week 6.

As announced by the team this afternoon, safety Matthias Farley and offensive lineman Justin McCray have been brought up from the practice squad for Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Both players now join this weekend’s roster as standard elevations.

Farley, as mentioned by head coach Frank Reich during yesterday’s post-practice presser, is expected to start in place of an injured Vonn Bell. Bell first popped up with a quadriceps issue on Thursday’s injury report and has been ruled out of the Week 6 contest.

A Charlotte, N.C. native, Farley came back home on Sept. 19—when the Panthers inked him to their practice squad. The 31-year-old has played seven NFL seasons with 18 starts over 100 career games.

McCray will provide some interior depth following last week’s neck injury to starting left guard Chandler Zavala. Zavala, who has been displaying “positive” signs in his recovery from what may just be a “really bad stinger,” was also ruled out of the contest.

Panthers elevate 2 defensive backs from practice squad for Week 4

The Panthers have elevated CB Dicaprio Bootle and S Matthias Farley for Sunday’s matchup against the Vikings.

The Carolina Panthers will be facing one of the most productive passing offenses in football on Sunday. So, with a banged-up secondary in tow, they’ve called up some much needed reinforcements.

As announced by the team on Saturday afternoon, cornerback Dicaprio Bootle and safety Matthias Farley have been moved from the practice squad to the active roster. The call-ups for the Week 4 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings are standard elevations.

Bootle, who has now been elevated for a second straight week, was signed to the practice squad back on Sept. 9. He first broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.

The University of Nebraska product went on to appear in seven games for the Chiefs between 2021 and 2022. He played in 27 snaps on special teams in last Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Farley joined Bootle on the practice squad a little over a week later on Sept. 19. The Charlotte, N.C. native has played seven seasons in the NFL, picking up 18 starts over 100 games.
