Preseason bowl projections: Hurricane warning for Notre Dame?

It’s a U…of Notre Dame thing.

As the college football regular season inches closer and closer, we’ve been getting hit with more and more preseason predictions and projections for how just about every one of the 131 Football Bowl Subdivision programs will do. The latest is a set of bowl projections for every bowl game this season from veteran college football scribe Bill Bender of The Sporting News.

Bender sends Notre Dame to a bowl game we’ve seen several outlets project the Irish to already, but the opponent Bender projects is about as compelling a potential bowl opponent as there could be for the Irish, short of it being someone in the College Football Playoff.

Bill Bender’s Notre Dame Bowl Projection:

Orange Bowl – December 30, 2022
Notre Dame vs. Miami (FL)

If Notre Dame isn’t playing in the College Football Playoff (which I’m not sold on to be frank), then go ahead and sign me up for this one. The disaster that was the 2017 game at Miami, where the Irish were obliterated, 41-8, still leaves a bad taste in any Notre Dame fan’s mouth.

And whenever you put Notre Dame and Miami in the same sentence, the collective antenna of college football fans everywhere is raised.

Panthers re-sign LS J.J. Jansen

Longtime long snapper J.J. Jansen has agreed to terms with the Panthers for the 2022 season.

The Carolina Panthers must’ve been in a warm and fuzzy mood on Wednesday afternoon.

A few hours after bringing back the beloved Steve Wilks to head the secondary, the team announced they agreed to terms with longtime long snapper J.J. Jansen. Jansen was set to become an unrestricted free agent heading into the 2022 campaign.

The recently turned 36-year-old has spent 13 seasons in Carolina. He was initially signed into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers back in 2008, but would then be traded to the Panthers for a conditional 2011 pick.

Since then, the franchise’s longest-tenured player has appeared in each of the team’s games since 2009. So, yes, he’s played in a whopping 209 straight contests.

Despite today’s news, that streak may be in jeopardy come summertime. Carolina is still rostering fellow long snapper Thomas Fletcher, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 draft.

Either way, Jansen will have another chance at fending off the youngster and a shot at surpassing kicker John Kasay’s franchise record of 221 games played.

Panthers tab team captains for 2021 season

The Panthers will have six new team captains for the 2021 season.

The Carolina Panthers officially named their team captains for the 2021 season on Thursday afternoon. And with a roster mainly compromised of new, young, budding talent comes a fresh batch of leaders.

Of the eight players who will don the patch, six will be first-time captains for the Panthers. Those men include quarterback Sam Darnold, center Matt Paradis, right tackle Taylor Moton, defensive end Brian Burns, cornerback Donte Jackson and long snapper J.J. Jansen.

Jansen’s inclusion is, perhaps, the most feel-good one of the bunch considering his standing within the organization. The 35-year-old, who is the oldest and longest-tenured player on the team, has finally earned the distinction upon entering his 13th year with the franchise.

For Darnold and Paradis, this won’t be their first rodeo with the patch in the NFL, as they’ve served as captains at their previous stops in New York and Denver. For Moton, Burns and Jackson, this signifies a vote of confidence as they’ll be looked upon as the long-term leaders moving forward.

Running back Christian McCaffrey and linebacker Shaq Thompson round out the eight. It’ll be their third and second seasons, respectively, as Carolina captains.

Carolina Panthers 53-man roster projection: Final cuts edition

Who’s staying in and who’s going out? Here are our projections for the Panthers’ initial 53-man roster.

Bloody Tuesday is upon us and the Carolina Panthers have some cleaning up to do. So who stays and who goes as they cut down their personnel before that 4 p.m. ET deadline in a few days?

Here are our projections for the team’s initial 53-man roster for the 2021 regular season.

Panthers safety, long-time specialist identified as potential chopping block candidates

Which NFL team has undergone more personnel changes over the last few years than the Carolina Panthers?

Which NFL team has undergone more personnel changes over the last few years than the Carolina Panthers? It seems dozens of fan favorites and franchise legends have left the team since the start of 2018. Whether it was retirement, trade or free agency, the team has said good-bye to big names like Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Julius Peppers, Ryan Kalil, Greg Olsen and Mario Addison to name just a few.

This offseason we could see their longest-tenured player finally move on, officially closing the previous chapter in this team’s history. According to David Newton at ESPN, long-time long snapper J.J. Jansen is is the top candidate to get cut before the season begins.

“Jansen has been one of the best long-snappers in the NFL since he arrived at Carolina in 2009. But when a team drafts a long-snapper — especially if it’s in the sixth round, when the Panthers selected Alabama’s Thomas Fletcher — it’s doing so with the mindset that he’ll make the roster. It simply doesn’t make sense to keep two long-snappers, particularly when one counts $1 million toward the salary cap.”

Fair enough. It was a strange flex to use a draft pick on Fletcher, but in any case the pressure is on Jansen to prove the job should still be his. Fletcher should probably be considered the favorite, but we can’t write off Jansen just yet. While Fletcher has that expended draft capital and youth working in his favor, Jansen has 192 games and 12 years of experience on his side.

There will be a lot more than just one cut come the end of the preseason, though. Rosters will be trimmed from 90 to 53 from Aug. 17-31.

Another potential cut is defensive back Juston Burris, who’s been named as a chopping block candidate by CBS Sports.

“But as they’re trying to level up the secondary, it comes time to decide if Burris is a capable starter to protect the back end behind Horn going forward. The Panthers might do well to instead lean more heavily on Jeremy Chin and to see what Sam Franklin can truly do if fully unleashed than to eat Burris’ salary in 2021. The 28-year-old will punch the Panthers cap for $4.83 million this season, but $3.78 million can revert to savings if they divorce him.”

That’s a decent chunk of change for the cap considering Burris’ value. However, it’s not enough reason to cut him.

Last year around this time we pinpointed backup running back Mike Davis as a seemingly obvious roster cut due to the cap savings involved. Instead, Davis stuck around and wound up balling out as a starter in the wake of Christian McCaffrey’s injuries. Despite what the analytics say about paying running backs, keeping Davis turned out to be the right decision.

Heading into 2021, the Panthers are pretty thin at the safety position, especially after the questionable decision to release Tre Boston. Burris may be able to keep his spot for no other reason than Carolina not having any better options to take his place.

Panthers rookie scouting report: Thomas Fletcher sets up long snapper competition

Any long-snapper is definitely not a flashy pick, but Thomas Fletcher is about as good as they come at the position.

Any long-snapper is definitely not a flashy pick, but Thomas Fletcher is about as good as they come at the position.

In his four years at Alabama he finished perfect on all snapping duties, received first team All-American honors his senior year, and won the Patrick Mannelly Award (nation’s top long snapper). Fletcher has quality size for the position and excellent accuracy. He has the potential to become one of the best long-snappers at the next level.

Current long snapper J.J. Jansen has been a tremendous player for the Panthers for over a decade, but let’s not forget he is now 35 years old and only has one year left on his contract, so he’ll most likely be gone after this upcoming season. If Fletcher makes the roster, he could provide special teams value right away and be a nice backup plan in case of an injury to Jansen this year.

Report: Panthers re-sign long-time long snapper J.J. Jansen to 1-year deal

The Panthers are re-signing long snapper J.J. Jansen to a one-year deal, according to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic.

The Panthers are re-signing long snapper J.J. Jansen to a one-year deal, according to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic. Jansen has held that position for Carolina since the 2009 season. He’s played in 192 regular season games since then and has only fumbled once.

Jansen is 35 years old now, so odds are he won’t be aroung in the NFL too much longer. That said, guys like Jansen tend to last longer than most at this level. He could continue playing into his 40s as far as we know. In any case, until Jansen decides to retire the Panthers should keep a roster spot for him.

This team is pretty well set up at the other specialist spots, as well. Joey Slye may have had a rough 2020 season but his range is still as good as any kicker in the league and punter Joseph Charlton had a strong rookie year.
