After elevating defensive lineman James Lynch to the active roster from the practice squad Saturday for their opener against the Chicago Bears, they are signing him to the active 53-man roster.

Lynch did see limited action on Sunday, playing seven defensive snaps in the season-opening loss to the Bears.

A former fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft, Lynch has seen action in 38 games, making three starts for the Vikings and Titans. The Titans also signed linebacker Kyron Johnson to the practice squad.

The Eagles drafted Johnson in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He does have NFL experience, notching 16 games with the Eagles, mostly on special teams.

Johnson played college football at the University of Kansas, where he was an All-Big 12 selection as a senior. He recorded 61 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, and forced four fumbles, which was third most in the Big 12. He also recovered two fumbles.

Johnson spent training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers but was released during the final preseason cut-down stage.

What the release of Kyron Johnson might mean for the Steelers

The Steelers are planning to release edge defender Kyron Johnson.

One of the finalists for Pittsburgh Steelers preseason stud of 2024 was outside linebacker Kyron Johnson. But it turns out Johnson was on the wrong end of the numbers game as NFL reporter Aaron Wilson is reporting that the Steelers are releasing Johnson.

Johnson is a likely candidate for the Steelers to re-sign to the practice squad but as Wilson pointed out, there could be some NFL teams looking to sign him to their 53-man rosters and it would be tempting.

Why would the Steelers release Johnson after such a strong camp and preseason? There are a couple of ways to look at it.

First off, Nick Herbig is turning into a star right before our eyes. Pittsburgh typically rotates three edge defenders so Herbig is going to take most of the reps after T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.

The Steelers also have two other players who can more than fill a similar role. Jeremiah Moon had a big preseason as well and is similar enough to Johnson keeping either guy makes sense.

Then there is DeMarvin Leal. The Steelers have made it no secret they want to use him as an oversized outside linebacker and he’s answered the call. We love what we’ve seen from Leal and he could make Moon expendable as well.

Eagles have 7th most amount of dead money salary cap hits in NFL for 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles $50 million in dead salary cap is the 7th most in the NFL

The Eagles have $27,451,062 in available cap space right now but could have a ton more if not for a $50 million dead salary cap hit that places Philadelphia among the top seven in the NFL, per Over The Cap.

The Eagles traded Haason Reddick this offseason and released Avonte Maddox before re-signing him at a lower salary. Other former Eagles included in the dead money are Marcus Mariota ($3,068,000), Kevin Byard ($1,386,000), Derek Barnett ($4,004,766), and Kyron Johnson ($104,964).

Additional money and salary cap space have been taken away after the retirements of Jason Kelce ($8,678,000) and Fletcher Cox ($4,200,000).

Steelers vs. Colts: Pittsburgh elevates LB Kyron Johnson from practice squad ahead Week 15 game

Kyron Johnson has been elevated to the active/inactive roster for the third consecutive week.

Kyron Johnson has been elevated to the active/inactive roster for the third consecutive week since being signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in October.

The inside linebacker played primarily on special teams after being selected by the Eagles in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. That’s been his role thus far for Pittsburgh, as well, with each of his 33 snaps coming on special teams.

Given that Week 15 is the third and final time Johnson can be elevated, Pittsburgh will need to sign him to the 53-man roster or risk him going through waivers. According to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com, he’ll revert to the practice squad after the game.

Eagles announce 5 roster moves ahead of Week 14 matchup vs. Cowboys

Eagles officially sign Shaquille Leonard, waive LB Christian Elliss among five roster moves

The Eagles announced five roster moves on Wednesday, officially adding Shaq Leonard to the organization and releasing Christian Elliss from the active roster.

The team also added Greg Ward to the practice squad while releasing wide receiver Cam Ward.

Leonard joins a linebacker corps decimated by injuries: Nakobe Dean is on Injured Reserve with a foot injury, and Zach Cunningham missed Sunday’s game against the 49ers because of a hamstring injury.

NFC Playoff Picture: Eagles still control their own destiny after blowout loss

We’re looking at the NFC Playoff picture entering Week 14 and the Philadelphia Eagles control their own destiny

The Eagles spent the early part of the season stacking wins, and even after a 42-19 loss to the 49ers last Sunday, Nick Sirianni’s team still has created a clinching scenario for Week 14.

All Philadelphia needs to do is snap the Dallas Cowboys’ 14-game home winning streak in a Sunday night showdown.

We’re looking at an updated NFC playoff picture with Thursday Night Football fast approaching.

Steelers vs Cardinals: Pittsburgh elevates LB Kyron Johnson to active roster

The Steelers will have Kyron Johnson available this week.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have elevated outside linebacker Kyron Johnson to the active roster for this week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson spoke to the media this week and said he expects to play on special teams this week and could play on defense if the team needs him.

Johnson is a former sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. Pittsburgh signed Johnson to the practice squad in early October and he’s had a great opportunity to work with outside linebackers like T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith since joining the team.

One of the reasons Johnson is getting the nod this week is that the team cannot elevate linebacker Tariq Carpenter without signing him to the 53-man roster for the rest of the season. Elevating Johnson gets them a player and will allow them to move him back to the practice squad after this week’s game.
