Steelers salary cap update after Cordarelle Patterson, Dean Lowry signings

The Steelers still have over $11 million in salary cap space.

This has been the busiest offseason in the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers thanks in huge part to General Manager Omar Khan and his aggressive nature when it comes to adding talent. This is something many fans don’t understand after two decades of Kevin Colbert and his ultra-conservative approach.

The most recent additions to the Steelers roster are defensive lineman Dean Lowry and wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. Lowry gives the Steelers a strong run defender who should provide some nice depth. Patterson is a do-it-all skill player with tons of experience who should excel as a kick returner with the new rules.

You might think the Steelers are out of money after all the activity this offseason but Khan’s background in working the salary cap has shown itself big time. According to Over The Cap, even after all the moves the Steelers have made, they still have $11,309,907 in cap space.

This is ideal with the 2024 NFL draft coming up. The Steelers have plenty of money to sign their rookie class and even delve into post-draft free agency when teams start cutting salaries.

Steelers agree to terms with QB Kyle Allen

The Steelers have finished off the quarterback depth chart.

And just like that, the Pittsburgh Steelers have filled out their quarterback depth chart. According to multiple sources including ESPN Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor, the Steelers have agreed to terms with former Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Allen.

Allen is a six-year NFL veteran. He originally came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He spent his first two seasons with the Carolina Panthers and followed that up with two seasons with the Washington Commanders. He spent 2022 season with the Houston Texans and was the backup to Josh Allen in Buffalo last season.

In 19 career starts, Allen is 7-12. He has 4,734 career passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns to 21 interceptions.

Steelers 2024 offseason roster – Interior offensive line

The Steelers need to add several pieces along the interior offensive line.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continued to re-tool the offensive line this season and by the end of the year seemed to have the guard situation in order with James Daniels and Isaac Seumalo. The center position however is still a work in progress and can stand an upgrade. Here is a look at the interior offensive linemen on the roster.

Top 5 Steelers free agents to sign in the offseason

Here are our priority in-house Steelers free agents.

We don’t expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to focus heavily on in-house free agents this offseason. The team is in need of a reset and this means the front office could turn over a significant portion of the roster. But here are the five in-house free agents the Steelers should prioritize.

Steelers RB Trey Edmunds elevated to active roster

In transactions on Saturday, the Steelers promoted Edmunds from the practice squad to active/inactive roster.

According to the Pittsburgh Steelers, running back Trey Edmunds was boosted to the active/inactive roster from the practice squad on Saturday.

Edmunds’ status for game day will be announced 90 minutes before kickoff, but expect he’ll be active. He’s next man up with fullback Derek Watt and safety Marcus Allen, heavy contributors to special teams, ruled out for Week 5.

In limited participation last year, Edmunds had 92 yards rushing and 48 receiving. The highlight of his season was an interception on a fake punt against the Los Angeles Rams. Steelers.com has the replay — watch it here.

Following the Steelers-Eagles game, Edmunds will automatically head back to the practice squad without dealing with the waivers process.

What is the Steelers biggest weakness heading into the 2020 season?

What part of the Steelers roster are you worried about?

[jwplayer lNMqp3Xb-ThvAeFxT]

In less than two weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers will finally be playing football. This Steelers roster has been built from the ground up over the last few seasons with a mix of draft picks and free agents and there are former top picks all over the field.

But if you were to find a weak link in the chain where would it be?

There are really only two spots where there is some unknown. The Steelers are looking for a new starting nose tackle and a new starting right tackle. Which is the weakest link? It depends on how you think about it.

The loss of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is tough. He is such a good interior pass rusher and disruptor there isn’t really a guy on the roster who can do what he can do. The Steelers have several guys who will attempt to fill the gap including Tyson Alualu, Isaiah Buggs and Dan McCullers.

None of these players are Hargrave but thanks to the versatility of players like Cam Heyward and Stephon Tuitt the dip in production should be mitigated.

Right tackle is a different matter. The sudden retirement of guard Ramon Foster at the end of last season created a predicament for Pittsburgh. The best option to replace Foster is Matt Feiler who was the team’s starting right tackle last season. This leaves Zach Banner and Chuks Okorafor to battle it out to replace him.

If I am weighing the two, right tackle is a much bigger worry. The Steelers defense is stacked. If Alualu struggles, there are plenty of guys to pick him up. But if Banner or Okorafor struggle, the entire offensive line struggles. This leads to potentially more pressure on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as well as the run game.

Where do you think the weak link is in the Steelers roster?

Steelers add WR, release CB in Sunday roster swap

The Steelers announced a pair of roster moves on Sunday.

[jwplayer lNMqp3Xb-ThvAeFxT]

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a pair of roster moves on Sunday. According to the team they have released cornerback Alexander Myers and replaced him on the roster with wide receiver DeAndre Thompkins.

Myers was already a longshot to make the final roster with a very deep and talented group of cornerbacks. Thompkins came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State. He was originally signed by the Philadelphia Eagles before playing for the DC Defenders of the now-defunct XFL.

It’s highly unlikely Thompkins will make the roster and this is just more maneuvering to keep healthy bodies in positions of need before the team is required to make final cutdowns.

3 ways the media are underestimating the Steelers

The Steelers are much better than the media gives them credit for.

(Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers)

Many in the media are selling the AFC as a two-team race. It is fair to look at the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens as the class of the conference but this doesn’t mean they are unbeatable. There are several teams capable of unseating them, first and foremost being the Pittsburgh Steelers. The national media isn’t giving the Steelers their due as a contender but we will.

Here are three ways the media are underestimating the Steelers.

Ben Roethlisberger can’t keep up with Jackson and Mahomes

If you listen to most NFL pundits, the consists of Mahomes and Jackson and everyone else is a significant number of notches below. While we appreciate the sentiment, these are still just mortal men. And as far as the Steelers go, more mortal considering the athleticism of that defense. But this is about Ben Roethlisberger. I know fans want to put Jackson and Mahomes into the HOF now but Big Ben is actually going in when he retires. With the arsenal Roethlisberger has, he can go score for score with every quarterback in the NFL.
