REPORT: Steelers ‘dodged a bullet’ with offensive lineman injury

Initital tests show that Pittsburgh Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo’s pectoral injury is not season-ending.

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Pittsburgh Steelers “dodged a bullet” with the recent injury to offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo.

Initial tests showed the veteran guard’s injury is not season-ending.

Initial tests showed that Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo did not suffer a season-ending pectoral injury. The team still is weighing how long he could miss but as one source said, ‘We dodged a bullet.’

According to CBS News/KDKA, a full tear of the pectoral muscle will take four to six months to heal and would require surgery to repair the damage, in addition to eight to 12 weeks or rehab. A partial tear only needs some rest to heal and can take four to six weeks.

The Steelers did add tackle/guard Doug Nester to the practice squad today, but look for rookie Mason McCormick or second-year lineman Spencer Anderson to fill the void should the injury, indeed, be temporary.

Steelers starting OG suffers potential season-ending injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting offensive guard, Isaac Seumalo, went down with what could be a season-ending injury at practice on Wednesday.

Update: Initial tests show that Isaac Seumalo’s injury is not season-ending.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting offensive guard, Isaac Seumalo, went down with what could be a season-ending injury at practice on Wednesday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Seumalo suffered a pectoral injury. Tests will be performed to determine severity. T.J. Watt experienced a torn pectoral in 2022, which sidelined him for seven games.

According to CBS News/KDKA, a full tear of the pectoral muscle will take four to six months to heal and would require surgery to repair the damage, in addition to eight to 12 weeks or rehab. A partial tear only needs some rest to heal and can take four to six weeks.

Depending on the severity, the Steelers could seek a veteran free agent to fill the Seumalo void. Otherwise, it’ll be a next-man-up situation for the Steelers to start the season with rookie Mason McCormick or last year’s 2023 seventh-rounder Spencer Anderson.

The Steelers signed the ex-Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman to a three-year contract in 2023 free agency. He allowed zero sacks in his first season in Pittsburgh.

No Steelers IOL make the cut in ESPN rankings

The Steelers didn’t get a guard or center on ESPN’s rankings.

ESPN asked NFL executives, coaches and scouts to rank their Top 10 interior offensive linemen in the league. To no one’s surprise, none of the Pittsburgh Steelers guards or centers made the list. In fact, none of them even got an honorable mention.

The best the Steelers could garner was guard Isaac Seumalo being included among those interior offensive linemen who also received votes. Here’s how ESPN’s Top 10 broke down:

1 – Zach Martin, Dallas Cowboys

2 – Chris Lindstrom, Atlanta Falcons

3 – Quenton Nelson, Indianapolis Colts

4 – Joe Thuney, Kansas City Chiefs

5 – Joel Bitonio, Cleveland Browns

6 – Landon Dickerson, Philadelphia Eagles

7 – Creed Humphrey, Kansas City Chiefs

8 – Frank Raganow, Detroit Lions

9 – Trey Smith, Kansas City Chiefs

10 – Elgton Jenkins, Green Bay Packers

It isn’t hard to make a case for Seumalo to be in the Top 10. In 2023, he played 1,038 snaps, allowed zero sacks and only committed one penalty. Zack Martin, No. 1 on the list played 908 snaps, allowed four sacks and committed three penalties according to Pro Football Focus. Seumalo was the Steelers best offensive lineman in 2023 and clutch down the stretch in the run game.

3 ruled out, 2 questionable in Colts vs. Steelers

Here are the players with injury designations for the Week 15 matchup.

The Indianapolis Colts (7-6) and Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6) released their final injury reports with designations Thursday ahead of the Week 15 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts ruled out two starters on offense while a defensive depth player was listed as questionable on the final injury report. Meanwhile, the Steelers ruled out their starting quarterback and listed a starting guard as questionable.

Here is a look at the players with injury designations entering the Week 15 matchup:

2 Steelers starting offensive linemen listed as questionable vs the Patriots

We expect all the questionable players to be game-time decisions this week.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense is going to have its work cut out for it on Thursday when they take on the New England Patriots. New England has one of the better defenses in the NFL and the Steelers could be shorthanded on offense at multiple spots.

We already knew the Steelers would be without starting quarterback Kenny Pickett. But according to the team’s final injury report ahead of Thursday’s game, the team could be minus more offensive players against New England.

Starting left guard Isaac Seumalo and starting center Mason Cole are both listed as questionable. Suemalo went out in last week’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals on the same play Pickett was injured on and was unable to return. It isn’t clear if he will be able to push through that shoulder injury.

Cole’s injury is something of a mystery. He was listed as limited all week with a neck injury but he spoke to the media this week and seemed fine.

If Cole and Seumalo cannot go, Nick Herbig would start at center and this would mean rookie guard Spencer Anderson could get his first NFL start.

Eagles’ coach Nick Sirianni confirms Cam Jurgens will be 1st-team right guard to open training camp

During his press conference to start the 2023 training camp, head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed that Cam Jurgens will get 1st team reps at right guard

Isaac Seumalo’s departure in free agency left a massive hole in the middle of the NFL’s top offensive line, but GM Howie Roseman has several notable replacements in place.

Nick Sirianni talked during the offseason about the looming right guard competition.

On Wednesday, he confirmed that second-year center Cam Jurgens would get the first shot over Tyler Steen.

Jurgens was drafted to eventually be the successor to Jason Kelce at the center position, but he’ll spend this season competing for the right guard spot.

A 23-year-old second-year center who’s played 44 career snaps, Jurgens didn’t play much as a rookie, but he’s shown dominant traits when inserted into the lineup.
