The Houston Texans get back in action with one of the most challenging games on the schedule as they prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens on the road.

While it is a continuation of the great ACC showdowns between Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson, it is also one of the earliest bouts for first-round bye supremacy. Currently, the Ravens are 7-2 and have one of the biggest tiebreakers in all the NFL with a win over the New England Patriots. If the Ravens and Patriots tie, Baltimore achieves home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

But what if the Ravens don’t catch the Patriots? That’s why the Week 11 encounter is so significant. If that happens, then a win for the Texans gives them the tiebreaker of the Ravens, and they would have it immediately as both teams’ records after a Texans win would be 7-3.

Beating the Ravens probably won’t have an impact on Houston’s postseason qualification as there are still six more games to go and three more AFC South games. However, in terms of securing the franchise’s first ever first-round bye, beating the Ravens goes a long way. In terms of the city’s NFL team having a first-round bye, this feat has not been seen around Harris County since January 1994 with the Houston Oilers.

Bye week drops Texans in Week 11 USA TODAY NFL power rankings

The Houston Texans dropped a couple spots over the bye week in the USA TODAY NFL power rankings for Week 11.

The Houston Texans took Week 10 off as they recovered from their trip to London to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-3 and also gear up for the last seven games of the season. As such, it had an impact in the power rankings.

According to Nate Davis of USA TODAY, the Texans dropped from No. 5 to No. 8 overall over their bye week.

If Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson can replicate fireworks from their 2016 college showdown, then Houston-Baltimore will be game of the week.

Compared to the rest of the AFC South, there are no other teams near the top-10. The Indianapolis Colts are at No. 14 after their loss to the Miami Dolphins, and the Tennessee Titans rose from a previous ranking of 24 up to 18 thanks to their 35-32 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jaguars saw no change as they still hold No. 20.

The Texans travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens at 12:00 p.m. CT from M&T Bank Stadium.

After their bye week and a crazy Week 10 chain of events for the rest of the league, the Jacksonville Jaguars remained at the No. 20 spot of USA TODAY’s power rankings. However, they have the opportunity to begin trending upwards Week 11 as Nick Foles will be returning to the lineup as the Jags take on their longtime rivals in the Indianapolis Colts.

The Jags’ last game took place against another divisional rival in the Houston Texans, who handily beat the Jags Week 9 and caused them to drop to their current spot. Meanwhile, the Texans jumped to the No. 5 spot as a result of the win in last week’s power rankings but dropped to the No. 8 this week despite being on their bye week.

As for the Indianapolis Colts, they fell from the No. 11 spot to the No. 14 spot as a result to the Miami Dolphins upsetting them Sunday. Lastly, the Tennessee Titans jumped to the No. 18 spot (from No. 24) after upsetting a team, who most viewed as Super Bowl contenders in the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday. That allowed them to leapfrog the Jags and make them the lowest ranked AFC South team of the power rankings.

Jags have the league’s eighth easiest remaining schedule

The Jags may have an uphill battle to endure to make the postseason, but at least their schedule is favorable in the process.

The Jacksonville Jaguars may currently sit at 4-5 with the No. 10 seed in the AFC playoff picture but it appears the hardest part of their schedule is over with. In fact, as of Week 11, they have the league’s eighth easiest schedule according to the NFL Media Research Department as their opponents combine for a record of 29-36 (.446 percent).

This is great news when considering how the Jags have struggled against opponents with records of .500 or better. As of Week 11, the Jags are 1-5 against opponents who fit the bill. Of course, that one win was against the Tennessee Titans Week 3. Heading forward they will have to face four opponents with records of .500 or better in the Indianapolis Colts (twice), Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, and Tampa Bay Bucs are the teams they face with losing records.

Another plus is that the Jags will have veteran quarterback Nick Foles back to help them navigate through the next two months. Given his résumé during his run with the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s possible he can string some wins together and get the team into the postseason, but only time will tell.

As for the rest of the AFC South, the Titans came in with the third toughest schedule (against a .611 win percentage), while the Houston Texans have the ninth toughest schedule (against a .554 win percentage) and the Colts came in with the 13th (against a .531 win percentage).

Several questions remain for the rest of this season, including how many more games the team will win. But before we get into that part, let’s look at some of the other key questions.

How much longer should Allen hold onto the starting job? Much of that answer likely lies within what the team decides to do with Drew Lock. Will the second-round pick play at all this season?

Will the offensive line, specifically Garett Bolles, ever start to play at a consistent level, or will this unit again be one of the big question marks going into next season?

When are the quarterback and offensive line spots not going to be big question marks for this team? How many games can the team win with those question marks the rest of this season?

Minnesota has a stout rushing attack and a good defense. This looks and feels like an unlikely win for the Broncos.

Former Texas Longhorns linebacker Malik Jefferson was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday

On Tuesday, former Texas Longhorns linebacker Malik Jefferson was waived by the Cleveland Browns.

Jefferson is in just his second year as a pro. He was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the Browns in 2019, Jefferson only made an appearance in one game, and that game came in week one against the Titans. In that game, Jefferson recorded just one tackle.

Hopefully, we see Malik find a new home soon. After all, he was a third-round pick last year for a reason.

As the No. 10 seed in the playoff picture, the Jags need some help to make the postseason and a loss for the Steelers would be a huge help.

With it being Week 11, the NFL playoffs will be here before fans know it. Hardly ever will you catch Jags fans rooting for the Steelers and they will especially have a reason to root against them this week. After starting 1-3 during the first quarter of the season, Pittsburgh has clawed their way back to a 5-4 record by winning their last four games and have found themselves with the last wild-card spot. Needless to say, the Jags would gladly take some help from the Browns, who aren’t in the playoff picture currently but could spoil things for their divisional rival.

Sunday, 1 p.m. games

Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens – root for the Ravens

The Texans are the AFC South’s divisional leader with a 6-3 record and it would take a miracle for the Jags to catch them because they own the tiebreaker over them. However, Sunday’s game against the Ravens is the start of a tough stretch for Houston as they also play the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts afterward. That said, a skid can begin here for them as the Ravens are playing solid football as the No. 2 seed.

Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins – root for the Dolphins

The Jags have a rivalry with Buffalo (6-3) as it is, however, they will really have a reason to root against them Week 11 as the Bills have the first wild-card spot. That said, they would gladly take some help from their Florida rivals Sunday. With the Dolphins being a divisional rival of the Bills, this could be a close one as they are on a two-game win streak currently and have some momentum.

Sunday, 4 p.m. games

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Oakland Raiders – root for the Bengals

The Raiders (5-4) are knocking on the door of getting a wild-card seed as they are the No. 7 ranked team in the playoff race. However, with the Bengals (0-9) being the league’s only winless team, Jags fans would unfortunately be asking for a lot here. Still, as we witnessed Week 10, upsets can happen and teams need to bring it week in and week out.

Do the Texans even have a player who can emulate Lamar Jackson in practice?

The Houston Texans will have to figure out how to defend Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson. Whitney Mercilus shares the details.

While preparing for Sunday’s tilt with the Baltimore Ravens, the Houston Texans may run into an issue: emulating the dual-threat skill set that quarterback Lamar Jackson presents.

Though the Texans boast their own dual-threat star, in Deshaun Watson, they won’t be using him to help train the defense to adjust to Jackson’s play-style. Nor will A.J. McCarron do so, considering, as a quarterback, he is a polar opposite.

“As far as the quarterback goes, we don’t have — besides Deshaun — a person that has the same skill set as Lamar,” said outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus on Tuesday on the Texans Players Show on Sports Radio 610.

Watson and McCarron won’t prepare the defense to face Jackson. Dual-threat/wide receiver/gunner Joe Webb also won’t be able to do so, either, as he is on the injured reserve. Instead, Houston will turn to second-year practice squad quarterback Alex McGough.

“We have McGough at quarterback, so he is the closest thing that we have in order to give us what Lamar might do — shaking and baking and all that to the best of his abilities,” said Mercilus.

Though McGough can’t quite replicate Jackson’s running totals (702 yards, six touchdowns in 2019), he doesn’t run as if he is in quick-sand. At Florida International, the quarterback earned his fair share of fans for his scrambling and ability to pinpoint passes on the run.

If McGough’s legs don’t cut it, however, the Texans may just opt to put in a running back or wide receiver to replicate Jackson’s savvy, speed and agility as a runner.

“Come Wednesday, that may change,” said Mercilus. “We may just put a running back in there at the quarterback position and run plays all day. Kind of just mix it up.”

Whatever Houston does wind up doing, they must get one thing down for certain: be prepared. The Texans cannot be caught flat-footed against Jackson; he will scorch them. Luckily, as Mercilus alludes to, they seem to have a plan.

A few weeks ago, former Texas Longhorn defensive back Quandre Diggs was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Seattle Seahawks. Last night, Diggs saw his first action with Seattle in a clash between the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers went into this Monday Night Football matchup as the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL. The Seahawks were able to stun the 49ers in San Francisco, winning in overtime by a score of 27-24.

About midway through the 3rd quarter, Diggs was able to intercept 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the score being 10-7 in favor of San Francisco. This interception led to a Seahawks touchdown, giving them the lead.

On the night, Diggs was able to tally two tackles, one of which was solo, a pass defense, and this interception.

NFL announces kickoff time for Texans-Buccaneers Week 16

The NFL released the kickoff times for the Houston Texans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Saturday, Dec. 21, in Week 16.

The NFL released the kickoff time for the Week 16 Houston Texans at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday.

The kickoff time for the Dec. 21, 2019, encounter at Raymond James Stadium will be at 12:00 p.m. CT on NFL Network.

The game is part of tripleheader action on the league network. After the Texans-Buccaneers tilt will be the Buffalo Bills at the New England Patriots with a 3:30 p.m. CT kickoff.

The action finishes up on Saturday with an NFC West showdown as the Los Angeles Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Houston and Tampa Bay will feature two young quarterbacks in Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston and two big-time receivers in DeAndre Hopkins and Mike Evans that could prove to be a shootout, no matter the records.
