FootballScoop predicts Georgia will be featured in two College GameDay matchups

Georgia football is projected to be featured in two College GameDay matchups this 2020 college football season.

I know, you’d rather be reading about which early-enrollees are turning heads at Georgia workouts. I’d rather be writing about that. Unfortunately, that’s not the world we are living in right now.

Instead, we are in a constant state of speculation, which can actually provide some entertaining stories like the one Zach Barnett of FootballScoop posted this week.

[lawrence-related id=22425]

He wrote a story predicting where ESPN’s College GameDay show will visit during each week of the 2020 college football season.

In his predictions, he had Georgia being involved in two College GameDay matchups.

The first one is a sure-thing…Georgia at Alabama on September 19 in Tuscaloosa.

From FootballScoop:

Speaking of sure things, Georgia at Alabama is perhaps the surest thing of the entire season. A rematch of the 2017 national championship and 2018 SEC title game, this game comes three days shy of the THIRTEEN YEAR anniversary of Georgia’s last trip to Tuscaloosa.

The other one is on Halloween, where Barnett predicts College GameDay will visit Jacksonville for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Not a bad prediction, as both teams will likely be in the top-ten playing for a spot in the SEC Championship Game.

Florida has finished second to Georgia in the SEC East in each of Dan Mullen’s first two seasons and, with a returning quarterback in Gainesville and a new offense coming in Athens, there’s a belief that the Gators can climb the hump this year. Florida vs. Georgia will be the ultimate trick or treat for Mullen.

Athens, Georgia was also mentioned as a possible destination on October 6. The Bulldogs will be hosting Auburn in The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, but there’s also plenty of other top-tier matchups taking place that weekend.

October 6 matchups include: Texas-Oklahoma, Clemson-Florida State, LSU-Florida, Auburn-Georgia, Minnesota-Wisconsin, Iowa-Ohio State, Rutgers-Purdue.

Oklahoma vs Texas gets GameDay that weekend in his predictions.

Commitment day for UGA, Oklahoma football recruiting target

Mario Williams, a four-star Georgia and Oklahoma recruiting target, is making his commitment. He plays football at Plant City in Florida

The Georgia Bulldogs are in the top schools for 2021 wide receiver Mario Williams. Williams is a talented four-star recruit, who plays high school football for Plant City High School in Florida.

Williams is an explosive athlete with a smaller frame. Here’s who elite wide receiver Mario Williams put in his top schools:

Williams is picking between four SEC teams: LSU, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and one Big-12 team in Oklahoma. Georgia is continuing to battle the Florida Gators for talented recruits in the Sunshine State.

In recent years, elite talent in Florida has been eluding the traditional in-state programs to go to Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and others. Mario Williams is a high-stakes recruit because if he doesn’t come to Athens, then the Dawgs will play against him, unless he goes to Oklahoma.

Williams is actually favored to attend Oklahoma. That being said, he’s making his commitment May 15th at noon, so Dawg fans won’t have to wait long to find out where he’s headed.

Former Florida Gators 4-star signee makes transfer decision

Florida Gators offensive lineman Issiah Walker has made his transfer decision.

Offensive tackle Issiah Walker signed with Florida as a 4-star recruit in the most recent (2020) recruiting cycle, however, announced last week that he would be transferring before ever playing a game for the Gators.

On Saturday, Walker announced he will be transferring to Miami, staying in-state.

Walker played high school football at Norland in Miami, Florida. His transfer continues Florida’s trend of struggling to lock down top talent in the Sunshine State.

Whether or not Walker will be forced to sit-out the 2020 season is unknown. NCAA transfer rules state he will, but we’ve seen crazier things happen.

Florida fans may try to brush off another transfer, but the Gators losing another offensive lineman isn’t going to help them rush for more than 21 yards next time they face Georgia.

Florida offensive lineman enters transfer portal

A former four-star recruit, Florida Gators offensive lineman Issiah Walker has entered into the transfer portal.

It’s been a tough past few days for Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators. Florida already saw one of the top running back commitments in the class of 2021 de-commit.

Now, the University of Florida is potentially losing a talented four-star offensive lineman in Issiah Walker. Walker entered into the transfer portal:

Florida fans may try to brush off another transfer, but let’s be honest the Gators losing another offensive lineman isn’t going to help them rush for more than 21 yards next time they face Georgia.

Walker played high school football at Norland in Miami, Florida. His transfer continues Florida’s trend of struggling to lock down top talent in the Sunshine State.

Kirby Smart and Georgia are recruiting Florida better than ever before. Walker’s transfer destination isn’t yet known, but it’s never surprising to see a player transfer between SEC schools.

As a 6-4, 310 offensive tackle, Issiah Walker has the physical attributes to succeed in the SEC. He’s only a freshman and will have plenty of time to adapt to college football.

Miami Palmetto RB decommits from Florida

The Florida Gators 2021 recruiting class took a dip when three-star Miami Palmetto running back Brashard Smith decommitted.

The Florida Gators 2021 recruiting class took a dip when three-star running back Brashard Smith decommitted. Smith plays football at Miami Palmetto High School.

Smith originally committed to Florida back in January. He announced his decommitment via Twitter:

Smith has received offers from numerous big-time schools throughout the country including: Alabama, LSU, Penn State, Tennessee, and more. Despite interest from several SEC schools, the Georgia Bulldogs haven’t offered Brashard Smith a scholarship.

Smith is a versatile player who can play both running back and wide receiver. He’s 5-9 and weighs 180 pounds. Not a bad size for a running back.

Smith’s recruitment will be one to monitor moving forward. If Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs don’t offer him, then they’ll probably end up playing against him in the SEC.

Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators will still be contenders to land his versatile talents:

We’ll continue to follow Smith’s recruitment and other SEC recruiting news. The Tennessee Volunteers have had a recent surge in recruiting and are now a top three class in the nation. They’re a team to watch with Smith.

Florida and Tennessee are both putting together formidable classes of 2021. Is the SEC East beginning to gain ground on the SEC West?

Tennessee commit fires back at Florida coach’s poor troll attempt

Monday, 4-star safety Kamar Wilcoxson committed to Tennessee in a video he posted on Twitter and a Florida assistant coach responded.

Monday, Georgia target and 2021 4-star safety Kamar Wilcoxson tweeted a video revealing his commitment to Tennessee for the 2021 recruiting class.

Wilcoxson attends IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and has had commitment issues to say the least.

Wilcoxson was committed to Florida during his freshman season until backing out of his commitment a short time later.

Then, last June, Wilcoxson decided that he really did want to play for the Gators and re-committed, which lasted about 9 months until de-committing from Florida for the second time in March of this year.

Here’s his Vols commitment tweet:

It seems that the Florida coaching staff hasn’t forgotten all the drama surrounding the Atlanta native, because the Gators’ offensive assistant director of player personnel subtweeted Wilcoxson following his commitment video – something you don’t usually see.

Wilcoxson then tweeted back calling out the Florida assistant for “throwing shots.”

He deleted the tweet, but his response read:

“Lol, you mad jit ? you grown throwing shots, I can’t wait til I see y’all boys!”

Even though Georgia missed out on the 4-star safety, I’m interested to see how the rest of this drama plays out, especially when Florida travels to Tennessee in the fall.

Georgia football makes top-six for 2021 4-star WR

Georgia football made the top-six for 2021 4-star WR Chris Hilton

On Sunday, Chris Hilton, a 4-star wide receiver from Zachary, Louisiana, named his top six schools.

Georgia, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame and Texas A&M made the cut.

The 6-foot, 169 pound prospect is ranked as the No. 5 receiver in the 2021 class and the No. 51 ranked prospect overall. (via 247Sports)

Hilton told 247Sports:

“You could say whichever school I feel like I’m more comfortable at, can play at, and get my education is how I’ll get it down to one.”

Although the Bulldogs have good depth at the receiver position for at least the next two seasons, Kirby Smart knows that you can never have too many explosive playmakers in today’s game.

Hilton, who runs a 4.45 40 yard dash, would be great addition to a speedy Georgia offense and with 5-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff heading to Athens in 2021, the Bulldogs hope to get as many playmakers on the outside as possible.

“I like the coaching staff and the academics are really good,” Hilton told Dawg Post, speaking of Georgia.

Steve Spurrier on absence of spring practice, how long teams need to prepare for 2020 season

Steve Spurrier, while on the Paul Finebaum Show, discussed how long teams will need to prepare for the 2020 CFB season after coronavirus.

Coronavirus has forced the NCAA to cancel all spring sports, including spring practices and scrimmages for college football teams.

Losing offseason practices is never something a college coach enjoys, for the obvious reason it takes time away from evaluating your roster and preparing for the following season.

However, while on the “Paul Finebaum Show,” SEC coaching legend Steve Spurrier went into deal about just how big of a deal the absence of spring practice is for these teams, saying for some coaches it’s really not that huge of an obstacle.

“Most all coaches would tell you that the staffs that have been there for 2, 3, 4 years or more that it’s not that big a deal not having spring football,” Spurrier said. “Maybe if you had competition at quarterback or some other positions, it would be important, but preseason, if you can get a month in before you play, I certainly think everyone would be capable of playing — maybe not quite their best, but pretty close to playing the best they can.”

Where Georgia falls into that is tricky. Kirby Smart is going into his fifth season as head coach of the Bulldogs, so he has a pretty good understanding of how things will run and look next season.

But then there’s the quarterback factor. As far as competition goes, Georgia does not have one. Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman will be the guy under center in 2020. But at the end of the day, he’s still a new quarterback playing in a new conference against a much higher level of talent. So, yes, I’m sure Smart would love to be able to see how Newman gels with the team this spring. But all things considered Smart understands what’s important at a time like this.

“Right now, I think that’s what we’re all hoping and praying that colleges can get 3-4 weeks of preseason and, then, hopefully, we’ve gotta have fans in the stands. I don’t know how you play college football without the fans,” Spurrier said. “They make it what it is. To me, that’s why it’s the greatest sport in the world. The fans talk about it year-round.”

2020 NFL draft: Jonathan Greenard scouting report

Everything NFL draft fans need to know about Florida edge defender prospect Jonathan Greenard

Jonathan Greenard | EDGE | Florida

Elevator Pitch

Greenard provides a solid pass rush off the edge. His first step and ability to bend around lineman give him opportunities to get to the quarterback. This disruptive edge defender should get several looks in the second and third waves of pass rushers taken in the NFL Draft.

Vitals

Height | 6-3

Weight | 263

Class | Redshirt Senior

College Stats

College Bio

Strengths

While he doesn’t possess elite get-off at the line of scrimmage, Greenard is able to get off quickly with good snap anticipation. He is a long athlete who uses that length to his advantage. When he fails to get to the quarterback, Greenard shows the timing to get those long arms up and bats away more than his fair share of passes.

He can bend around the edges and dip under tackles as needed. He possess a good toolbox of pass rush moves for someone at the college level. Will read the screen very well. When engaged with lineman, uses his hands well to keep the lineman off his body to continue his pass rush. Very good at setting the edge and as a run defender.

Weaknesses

His wrist injury from 2018 is a bit of a red flag. Was heavily padded for the 2019 season. Teams will need to dive in deep to make sure there are no long-term concerns with the injury. That could be a reason why he wasn’t as refined as one would have hoped to see in 2019. Hand usage was good but. not great.

Needs to develop more as an outside rusher. A lot of sacks came from beating the tackle inside or when playing lesser competition. Lacks the get off to beat tackles out of their stance like the elite ones possess. He has some explosiveness that he used to his advantage that won’t work in the NFL.

Projection: Day 2
