How are new media and gambling changing the NBA? We spoke with the New York Time’s Sopan Deb about the Celtics and the blurring lines of the league.

Fans of the Boston Celtics (and, truthfully, the entire league) can’t watch their favorite team without a gambling segment, an ad about betting, or an opportunity to gamble. And when the game ends, more and more of the players playing it are jumping on their podcasts to talk about it.

With the lines between multiple, entangled businesses that make up the NBA ecosphere blurring more with every passing day, what are the benefits — and more importantly, the risks — of these phenomenons? Is the ubiquity of sports gambling here to stay? Can we expect the same objectivity from NBA players acting as new media as we can from the old? And what potential concerns might be coming down the pike that we have yet to even think of?

Prosecutors drop charges against Broncos DL Eyioma Uwazurike

Prosecutors have dropped criminal charges against Eyioma Uwazurike, but the Broncos’ defensive lineman remains suspended by the NFL.

The NFL handed down an indefinite suspension to Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike last year for breaking the league’s gambling policy.

In addition to the NFL’s suspension, Uwazurike also faced potential legal repercussions. On Friday, the criminal charges were dropped due to the investigation “exceeding [the] scope of permitted use of tracking software,” according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson.

The criminal charges have been dropped, but Uwazurike remains suspended and away from the team. Broncos coach Sean Payton criticized the NFL’s stipulations for suspended players last summer.

“[W]e’re going to send them home for a year, where they can’t be around,” Payton said in an interview with USA TODAY‘s Jarrett Bell last July. “The idea that you just go away — shame on us.”

Uwazurike will be eligible to petition for reinstatement on July 24. There’s no guarantee the NFL will grant a reinstatement, but the criminal charges being dropped could, in theory, make Uwazurike more likely to return in 2024.

FanDuel sports releases 2024 College Football SEC win totals

How many games does FanDuel project the Crimson Tide to win in 2024?

There is no question that the retirement of [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] will have a massive impact on the landscape of not only the Southeastern Conference but college football as a whole. However, even though the GOAT might be gone, Alabama is still one of the best programs in all of college football and just picked up one of the best young coaches in the game in [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag]. DeBoer is coming off of a national title appearance with the Washington Huskies in just his second year and posted a 25-3 record with UW in 2022 and 2023. With the playoffs expanding to 12 teams too, it’s hard to see Alabama missing out on it despite all of the changes going on inside of Tuscaloosa.

The SEC has always been a gauntlet, but the additions of Texas and Oklahoma in 2024 are going to make things even crazier. The Tide will not face Texas next season, but they do have a trip to Norman, Oklahoma to face the Sooners the week before the Iron Bowl.

FanDuel released their betting win totals for all of the SEC teams in 2024, and let’s just say they are very interesting. FanDuel sets Alabama’s win total at 9.5 games, which my instant reaction is over. Georgia and Texas lead the way with 10.5 whereas Auburn is about middle of the pack at 7.5.

Shannon Sharpe gives Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte ‘dumdum award’ for recent arrest

Shannon Sharpe calls Kayshon Boutte a “dumdum” after recent arrest

Shannon Sharpe wasn’t in the mood for holding back when talking about New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, who was recently arrested on illegal online gambling charges.

Boutte faces one misdemeanor count of underage gaming and a felony count of computer fraud. He is accused of creating a fake account for gambling while representing himself as 21 years old or older when he was actually underage.

The former LSU star wideout allegedly placed over 8,900 bets with some involving LSU games. However, the fake names used had Boutte’s first and last name in them.

During an episode of “Nightcap” with Chad Johnson, Sharpe named Boutte as the “dumdum of the day.”

“…Now, normally Ocho, when you’re doing something illegal, you try to go out of your way, I’m not going to use my name,” said Sharpe. “If I’m robbing banks or something, I’m going to use a stolen car. I’m not going to use my car. Let me tell you what dumdum did.

“Now you would think, you know you’re not supposed to be gambling, illegal gambling or to definitely not be gambling on college football or your game. Guess what dumdum did. Guess what his username was. …His username to place these illegal bets was Kayshon Boutte.”

Per WAFB 9, Boutte arranged to turn himself in before posting a $6,000 bond and being released. There has been no word yet on whether he’ll face disciplinary action from the NFL.

The AFC and NFC Conference Championship games are upon us and you have storylines-a-plenty coming in. The two top seeds are both healthy favorites, but in the 49 years of playoff seeding since 1975, only 14 Super Bowls have featured the two top-seeded teams – just 28%.

The deletion of one team getting a bye in each conference has played a part in unleveling the playing field. Both No. 1 seeds are the only ones to get a week off, and they played on Saturday at home in the Divisional Round, giving them an additional day of recovery and preparation against teams that have already had to win twice.

The nagging question is whether you believe history will repeat itself two years in a row, and the teams with the bye make it pay off with a trip to the Super Bowl.
