Dan Mullen among reasons 2018 coaching hire cycle was a mess

Dan Mullen may have suffered from the COVID more than any other coach in the cycle.

Six years have passed since the 2018 college football head coach hiring cycle and looking back on a season that saw 21 positions replaced — including 13 at the power-conference level and five at programs that had won national championships or played for one within the previous 20 years.

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde took a look back on what has turned into a disastrous cycle in retrospect, including Florida’s hiring of now-departed [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag]. He opens up with his immediate reaction to the hire.

“Mullen was not first on Florida’s list, but was still lauded as a quality hire after excelling in a much more difficult SEC locale, Mississippi State,” Forde begins. “Mullen went 69–46 in Starkville, Mississippi, including a 10–3 season in 2014. That team earned a historical footnote by being the first No. 1 in the College Football Playoff selection Top 25, starting the season 9–0. He also had history at Florida, having been Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator.”

Forde continues with how things worked out for the Gators and Mullen.

“Mullen’s tenure might have been as much a victim of the pandemic as anyone’s,” he notes. “He was 21–5 in his first two seasons, then started 8–1 in ’20 before a playoff-busting upset loss to the LSU Tigers triggered a three-game losing streak.

“Florida was 5–6 in ’21 when the plug was pulled, the end coming on losses to the South Carolina Gamecocks and Missouri Tigers sandwiched around a 70–52 win over the FCS Samford Bulldogs that Mullen weirdly tried to spin as a triumph.”

As for the high point of Mullen’s tenure, Forde’s example was certainly a big moment: “Thumping the Georgia Bulldogs in mid-2020 to take control of the SEC East. Then a thrown cleat against the Tigers somehow altered the course.”

Of course, we know how things ultimately panned out: “Florida hired Billy Napier and the record has gotten worse.”

If it is any consolation, plenty of Florida rivals and SEC peers also suffered similar fates, though many of them have rebounded from 2018 much better. Nonetheless, it is still an ugly blemish on the history of the Orange and Blue.

Former Florida coach Dan Mullen ranks top 10 after bowl season

Former Florida coach Dan Mullen still ranks Florida State over Georgia after the Orange Bowl

ESPN college football analyst and former Florida Gators and Mississippi State Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen ranked his top college football teams after bowl season. Mullen announced his top 10 before the national championship game.

Dan Mullen will rank the winner of the national championship between Michigan and Washington as his No. 1 team. Shockingly, Mullen ranks Florida State over Georgia despite the Bulldogs’ historically dominant 63-3 win over the Seminoles in the Orange Bowl.

Dan Mullen and Matt Barrie kept eating mayonnaise during the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and it was so gross

That is A LOT of mayonnaise.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Wednesday’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl game featured a lot of mayonnaise. Honestly, we’d be disappointed if that wasn’t the case, but it’s still pretty gross.

As North Carolina and West Virginia faced off in one of the most popular bowl games, ESPN broadcasters Matt Barrie and Dan Mullen were having their own version of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in the booth. Specifically, they were taste-testing different items with mayonnaise, like habanero garlic flavor mayo.

They both actually seemed to enjoy the habanero-garlic edition — though Barrie acknowledged that maybe downing a little spice before calling a play was the wrong move for him.

But they kept going with their taste-testing, despite the profound grossness of consuming so much mayo.

But eventually, Barrie and Mullen brought out mayo nachos, which is quite an escalation from the previous options. It looked kind of like elote but with chips and skewed proportions.

It’s not totally clear if it was nacho-flavored mayo on nachos, just nachos with mayo on top of them or both. But either way, it was too much for Barrie to handle – and understandably.

“Oh my god… no,” Barrie said when Mullen offered him a taste. But Mullen loved them.

So yeah, there was a lot of mayonnaise at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and it was so gross.

UPDATE: More mayo.

Dan Mullen predicted ineligible James Madison to win the Conference USA title in his weekly picks

The Dukes are not playing this weekend, but that didn’t keep the former Florida coach from picking them to win a conference they aren’t in.

Former Florida coach turned ESPN analyst Dan Mullen made his picks ahead of conference championship on Friday night, and in the battle for the Conference USA title, he took James Madison over New Mexico State.

Just one slight problem: The Dukes aren’t playing New Mexico State. In fact, they aren’t even in the same conference.

While New Mexico State is traveling to face a 12-0 Liberty team that has a real New Year’s Six shot after breaking into the College Football Playoff rankings, James Madison resides in the Sun Belt, which it is ineligible to win despite finishing 11-1 and atop the East Division standings.

Considering the Dukes should be playing for a conference title this weekend — and Conference USA had an ineligible team of its own near the top of the standings in Jacksonville State — it’s an understandable mistake for Mullen to make.

But still, did no one who looked over this graphic before it was posted notice that? Seriously?

ESPN analyst, former Florida head coach Dan Mullen goes in on Lincoln Riley

It’s open season on Lincoln Riley. This is what losing games will do.

Former Florida and Mississppi State coach-turned-ESPN analyst Dan Mullen wondered whether UCLA’s Chip Kelly should be the one on the hot seat in Los Angeles. Mullen wondered if USC’s Lincoln Riley should be more on the hot seat instead.

“Are we sure that they have the right coach on the hot seat in L.A.?” Mullen tweeted.

The Trojans opened the year 6-0 but then lost to Notre Dame, Utah, Washington, Oregon, and UCLA to end the season.

Riley fired his defensive coordinator, Alex Grinch, after a 52-42 loss to Washington. The Trojans have given up 36 and 38 points in the two games since.

More concerning? Many looked at the Trojans against the Bruins on Saturday and felt the team quit.

USC fell to 7-5 with the loss to UCLA. USC entered the year ranked No. 6 in the AP poll. After an 11-3 season in Year 1 under Riley, many believed USC should contend for a spot in the College Football playoff.

Chip Kelly is currently 35-33 as the Bruins’ head coach with two wins over USC in his tenure. Lincoln Riley is 18-8 overall as the Trojans’ head honcho.

Dan Mullen suggests one underperforming coach should be on the hot seat

The former Florida and Mississippi State coach shared a tweet after this coach lost a rivalry game for his fifth loss in six games.

Former Florida and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, now working as an ESPN analyst, shared his thoughts on a current college coach’s job security on Saturday.

UCLA entered the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum amid rumors the school wanted to fire head coach Chip Kelly after the game and left with a 38-20 victory over USC. In the middle of the Trojans’ fifth loss in six games, Mullen had this to say on Twitter.

Riley, now in his second season with USC, won 17 of his first 20 games with the Trojans, including an 11-win season and a conference title game appearance. His 2023 season has gone off the rails, however, with five losses and a 2-point victory over California in the last six games. The Bruins were the first unranked loss of the season for USC.

Reigning Heisman champion Caleb Williams, the presumed top pick in the NFL Draft, won’t be around next season either. Could the Lincoln Riley tenure continue on this dangerous trajectory?

Dan Mullen questioned if Lincoln Riley should be on the hot seat after UCLA loss

Dan Mullen thinks Lincoln Riley could be on the hot seat.

A coach who knows what it’s like to be on the hot seat has openly wondered if another coach should be on the hot seat.

Former Florida coach Dan Mullen, who now works with ESPN as a football analyst, questioned on social media Saturday if USC football coach Lincoln Riley should be on the hot seat for the Trojans’ disappointing season.

We say “disappointing” because what’s likely the last season for Caleb Williams at the school was largely undone due to poor defense.

Former USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has already been fired this season, and now Mullen is questioning if Riley should be next instead of UCLA coach Chip Kelly, who has also been feeling the heat lately.

Okay, while there is an unavoidable irony in a fired coach wondering if another coach should be fired, it doesn’t take away from the frustration USC fans must be feeling after losing 38-20 to UCLA and closing out a letdown season.

While Riley is very unlikely to lose his job after this season, someone like Mullen openly wondering if he should can’t be ignored.

Former Gators HC listed as candidate for Mississippi State opening

TV analyst and former head coach Dan Mullen could return to the sidelines to take over the Mississippi State position.

Is there a chance that former Florida Gators head coach [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag] could be the next selection to lead the Mississippi State Bulldogs? CBS Sports seems to believe so.

College football writer Barrett Sallee says there’s a potential that Mullen could jump ship from his TV analyst career and return to the sidelines, but to his other former job in Starkville, Mississippi.

“Athletic Director Zac Selmon has to make this call, right?” Sallee wrote. “Mullen elevated the program from an anonymous punching bag in the SEC West into a team that was not only relevant but a perennial division title contender.

“The Bulldogs had only been to 13 bowl games prior to Mullen’s arrival in 2009,” Sallee continued. “Under his leadership, they went to seven straight bowls (2010-16) during his eight-year stint. They were ranked No. 1 in the first-ever College Football Playoff Rankings in 2014 behind star quarterback Dak Prescott.

“Mullen went 34-18 in four years at Florida (2018-21), which included an SEC East title in 2020. He has been working in television since Florida dismissed him with one game remaining in the 2021 regular season.”

Mullen was fired by Scott Striklin before the end of the 2021 season when the team finished with a 6-7 record and a loss to the UCF Knights in the Gasparilla Bowl.

Sallee also listed Kansas head coach Lance Leipold and SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee.

ESPN college football analyst and former Florida Gators and Mississippi State Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen ranked his top college football teams following Week 11.

Week 11 featured Georgia dominating Ole Miss, 52-17, which was the No. 9 team in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Michigan won a defensive battle against Penn State. Washington won at home against Utah. Oregon prevailed over USC, and Ohio State dominated Michigan State. Texas and Florida State survived in one-score wins over conference rivals.

Kirby Smart roasts Dan Mullen with funny comment after UGA’s win

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart roasts Dan Mullen after Mullen picked against Georgia in the UGA-Florida game

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart took offense to college football analysts picking against Georgia ahead of the Florida game. Specifically, Kirby Smart called out former Florida head coach Dan Mullen, who picked the Gators to upset Georgia.

“He’s supposed to be my friend,” said Kirby Smart after being asked about analysts predicting that Georgia would lose to Florida. Smart added, “He didn’t like to recruit though.”

Kirby Smart’s Georgia team came out and proved the doubters wrong against Florida. Georgia dominated the Gators with a 36-0 scoring run.

Here’s a look at Kirby Smart’s quote on Dan Mullen:

It’s good to see that Kirby Smart still has a great sense of humor at the expense of Florida Gators.
