Podcast: Texas Longhorns under tremendous pressure in 2020

Locked on Longhorns Podcast returns discussing the pressure that Tom Herman and Texas will face in 2020. Plus an Ohio State commit weighs in

The Texas Longhorns are under immense pressure to win in 2020. Patrick and Cami discuss the pressure that Tom Herman and the staff is feeling for the upcoming season. Ohio State commit Tunmise Adeleye weighed in on why he didn’t choose Texas and his reasoning isn’t a new development for the Longhorns. However, it is something that needs to be addressed in order for the team to compete with top tier prospects across the country.

The 2020 season is a huge one for the staff but are their potential pitfalls? The Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State are three that could give the Longhorns fits in the upcoming season. Oklahoma and LSU are obviously the biggest tests for Texas but any of the three aforementioned teams could cause the Longhorns to stumble if they aren’t focused.

The duo provide an updated on the four targets as far as their crystal predictions on 247Sports. Plus which of the 35 FBS teams are surprising that they haven’t ever beaten Texas.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: Another ‘What If’ Monday

The latest “What If” episode of the Longhorns podcast discussing Nick Saban, Shane Buechele and Jamaal Charles.

The Monday edition of the Locked on Longhorns Podcast opens up with the idea of sports coming back soon. NASCAR and golf returned over the weekend, how far off could other sports be? The first what if scenario discussion with the idea of Nick Saban actually taking the job at the University of Texas following the 2012 season. What would the Texas Longhorns look like with Saban at the helm?

What if the Longhorns would have gone with Shane Buechele over Sam Ehlinger? Following the game against Notre Dame in 2016, the Longhorns looked to have found their quarterback of the next several seasons. However, Tom Herman went with Sam Ehlinger during the 2017 campaign and that eventually led Shane to transferring to Southern Methodist.

The 2008 season has been one topic of discussion as of late but what if Jamaal Charles would have remained at Texas for his senior year? How differently could that have impacted the season and the 2008 heartbreaker against Texas Tech.

Joe Judge: Adding Cooper Rush was a ‘positive’ for Giants

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge says the addition of QB Cooper Rush was a “positive” for the team.

The New York Giants believe they have their franchise quarterback in Daniel Jones but that has precluded them from stacking the quarterback room with bodies.

This past week, the Giants claimed former Dallas Cowboys backup Cooper Rush off waivers, giving them a total of five quarterbacks on their 90-man roster.

Rush played under Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in Dallas the last few seasons and is familiar with what Garrett will be trying to install here with the Giants.

“Like everyone else in the league, we are looking at the waiver wire every day. We are always trying to acquire good football players for our team,” said head coach Joe Judge. “The competition in training camp will sort a lot of things out. When we see a good player out there and we think he is someone that can be an asset to our team and come in here and compete, that’s all we’re considering. He was someone that came across the waiver wire that we had known about and some had experience with him. We thought it would be a positive move for our team.”

Rush’s arrival gives the Giants five quarterbacks, which is unusually high for a team that has its franchise quarterback plan in place. Besides Jones and Rush, who signed a one-year deal worth a potential $1.25 million last week, the team has Colt McCoy, Alex Tanney and rookie Case Cookus in house.

Judge was asked on a conference call on Tuesday if he felt he could carry five quarterbacks on the roster right now.

“You definitely can. You can have 90 quarterbacks right now because you don’t have to worry about throwing to anybody,” he said. “In terms of going to camp right now, we’ll address that as we get closer to camp in terms of all the positions. We obviously have a template like everybody else has of the desired numbers at each position. I think the overriding factor is you don’t want to turn away a good player just to suit the numbers. You kind of structure practice accordingly to make sure there is as many good players on your roster as possibly could be.”

The Giants are ramping up the competition at all positions, so why shouldn’t they do that at quarterback? The addition of Rush, McCoy and Cookus, who the Giants signed after the draft and was on many experts’ draft “sleeper” lists, should make for an interesting camp.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: Playing the ‘What if’ game

Latest Locked on Longhorns Podcast discussing a few “What if’s” such as the Blake Gideon drop and Colt McCoy’s injury in the BCS title game.

The show kicks off talking about three big what if scenarios. Patrick and Cami take a trip down memory lane and discuss what could have happened if these three scenarios played out a different way.

  1. What if Blake Gideon caught the tipped pass from Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell on Halloween Night in 2008? Would Texas have played for the National Championship? Would the Longhorns had fared any better against Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators than their bitter rivals did?
  2. What if Colt McCoy didn’t get hurt on the opening drive against Alabama in the 2009 BCS National Championship game. McCoy took what looked to be a normal hit, what if that hit never happened? Or what if that hit didn’t knock him out of the biggest game of his collegiate career? Colt himself stated that night changed his life forever but how much could it have changed the fortunes of the Texas Longhorns football team?
  3. What if Vince Young didn’t sign his NLI to play football at the University of Texas? What would that ripple effect had been like? What if instead he chose Florida State?
  4. As an added bonus, Cami and Patrick ask the question of what if Vince Young had decided to play his senior year at Texas? That could have changed not only the National Championship picture that year but maybe the Colt McCoy situation. Also, what if Vince Young didn’t play for Jeff Fisher and the Titans?

UGA football NFL player comparisons ahead of 2020 Draft

We examine UGA NFL comparisons for D’Andre Swift, JR Reed, Jake Fromm, Isaiah Wilson, Andrew Thomas, Solomon Kindley, and Lawrence Cager.

The Georgia Bulldogs are expected to have anywhere from six to ten players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. But what NFL players are elite UGA prospects being compared to?

Georgia Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm is anticipated to be one of the top quarterbacks selected. Where he falls among the best prospects is up for debate.

Jake Fromm’s player comparison is current Washington Redskin’s quarterback Colt McCoy. McCoy doesn’t have elite physical talent, but is a solid player who has been in the NFL for ten seasons. PFF compares Fromm to another similar NFL player.

McCoy has been a back-up for much of his career, which is an indication of what NFL.com thinks of Jake Fromm. Fromm, like McCoy, had a distinguished career at a major college.

McCoy, who was a star for the Texas Longhorns, has thrown for 29 touchdowns and 27 interceptions across 28 career NFL starts. He has over 6,000 career passing yards. McCoy was a third round pick in 2010.

Staff Roundtable: Who makes the Mount Rushmore of Texas football?

With ongoing discussions regarding the Mount Rushmore of Texas football, the staff weighed in on their own versions.

It seems that every media outlet, social media account, or on-air personalities have attempted to put together their own “Mount Rushmore” of a certain topic. There are no shortages of notable names for the Texas football program, so we’re going to jump on board and give it a shot. From legendary coaches to players on the field, there is quite a pool of talent to choose from.

Patrick’s Mount Rushmore

Darrell K. Royal

It is difficult to put together a top four list that doesn’t involve Coach Royal. The stadium is named after him and he brought the Longhorns three National Championships and 11 conference titles in his 20-year run as head coach. The Longhorns were just 1-9 the season the season before Royal’s hire and went 6-4-1 in that first year including an invite to the Sugar Bowl. Overall he finished his coaching record with the Longhorns at 167-45-5 which included two undefeated seasons.

Vince Young

When people think of Texas, many remember the play in the Rose Bowl on fourth down. Vince Young willed a team that many felt would fall to USC en route to their third-straight National Championship. The highest rated recruit ever at the University of Texas provided many memories, including a National Championship that immortalized Young at Texas.

Jeff Lewis-USA TODAY Sports

Mack Brown

The Texas Longhorns hadn’t won a National Title since 1970, when Mack Brown came to town it changed a lot for the Longhorns. During his tenure, Mack led the Longhorns to nine-straight seasons with double digit wins. Two National Championship appearances and one championship. While at Texas, Mack won 158 games putting him just nine short of Royal’s mark.

Earl Campbell

It would be an incomplete Mount Rushmore without Earl Campbell. The Tyler Rose won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 when he rushed for 1,744 yards and 18 touchdowns. It was the first time a Longhorn had won the trophy. Overall, Campbell finished with 4,443 yards and 40 touchdowns. His rushing yards total was the best in school history until Ricky Williams came along. Still the 3rd highest in school history behind Williams and the late Cedric Benson.
