Report: Giants re-signing LS Casey Kreiter

The Giants are reportedly re-signing long snapper Casey Kreiter.

The New York Giants are reportedly keeping long snapper Casey Kreiter for at least another season.

According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Kreiter has re-upped with the Giants right before he was scheduled to hit free agency — and that’s despite the expectation that he’d have outside interest on the open market.

Kreiter was signed by the Giants in 2020 and has spent the last four seasons with the team.

“Casey’s the glue. He is, he’s the glue to our special teams unit. He is the quarterback of our punt team,” former special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey told reporters last December. “I couldn’t sit here and tell you how much he means to our special teams unit.”

“He’s a great leader, he’s insightful, he thinks like a coach on the field, he’s a real leader in our room, he gets the guys together every week.”

Prior to his stint in New York, Kreiter was an undrafted free-agent signing of the Dallas Cowboys out of Iowa before spending four seasons with the Denver Broncos, where he earned one Pro Bowl nod.

Giants’ Thomas McGaughey: Casey Kreiter the glue that holds us together

New York Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey says long snapper Casey Kreiter is the glue that holds the unit together.

New York Giants long-snapper Casey Kreiter is somewhat of a forgotten man. If he doesn’t make a mistake, he’s generally an afterthought to those in the media and the fans in the stands.

Inside of the building at 1925 Giants Drive, it’s a different story, however.

While meeting with reporters earlier this week, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey heaped praise upon Kreiter and had to stop himself from carrying on for an extended period of time.

“Casey’s the glue. He is, he’s the glue to our special teams unit. He is the quarterback of our punt team,” McGaughey told reporters this week. “I couldn’t sit here and tell you how much he means to our special teams unit. He’s a great leader, he’s insightful, he thinks like a coach on the field, he’s a real leader in our room, he gets the guys together every week.

“He does his own scouting report, writes it on the board, they come in, they watch it, they talk about it, each unit as a whole, and I couldn’t begin to explain to you how much he means to us as a special teams group.”

Kreiter essentially serves as an extra assistant coach in addition to a player on the field. That will likely position him well when the time comes to hang up his cleats, as he’ll ultimately be afforded similar opportunities to another former Giant, Chase Blackburn.

Unfortunately for Kreiter, there isn’t much gloating to be done here in 2023. Through no fault of his own, the Giants’ special teams unit is among the worst in football.

Giants announce new jersey numbers, Parris Campbell will wear No. 0

The New York Giants announced several new jersey numbers this week including WR Parris Campbell, who will wear No. 0.

The New York Giants announced new jersey numbers for several of their recent free-agent acquisitions on Wednesday. They also announced an in-house jersey number change.

Here’s a quick look at which Giants will wear what number in 2023.

Giants re-sign long snapper Casey Kreiter

The New York Giants have re-signed long snapper Casey Kreiter to a new deal.

As the official start to free agency approaches, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen is working feverishly to keep several players in the building.

Over the past 24 hours, the team has agreed to terms with wide receiver Sterling Shepard and punter Jamie Gillan, and you can now add long snapper Casey Kreiter to that list.

The Giants and Kreiter have come to an agreement on a new deal.

With Gillan and Kreiter back, the Giants will run things back on their kicking trio in 2023, which includes veteran Graham Gano.

Kreiter, who originally signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Iowa following the 2014 NFL draft, spent the first two seasons of his career in Texas. After that, he joined the Denver Broncos from 2016-2019, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2018.

The Giants signed Kreiter in 2020 and he went on to replace long-time long snapper Zak DeOssie, who opted to retire.

Kreiter has been solid and consistent for the Giants, both as a player and a teammate in the locker room. He fits the Brian Daboll mold of smart, tough, and dependable.

Schoen will start by attempting to retain his own impending free agents. Here is a list of the Giants’ top 10 unrestricted free agents and what the team may do with them.

Note: Players are ranked from most important on down.

Giants name 10 team captains ahead of 2022 season

The New York Giants have named 10 team captains ahead of the 2022 regular season, including QB Daniel Jones.

The New York Giants voted on Tuesday and they named 10 — yes, 10 — team captains for the 2022 regular season. There will be three each on offense, defense and special teams plus one hybrid co-captain.

“The player voted for captains,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. “That was all player votes. There were other players who got votes but [these 10] for the most votes.”

The offensive captains are as follows:

  • QB Daniel Jones
  • RB Saquon Barkley
  • OT Andrew Thomas

On defense, linebacker Blake Martinez did not get the nod. But three others did.

  • S Xavier McKinney
  • DL Dexter Lawrence
  • DL Leonard Williams

The special teams captains are listed below:

  • K Graham Gano
  • LS Casey Kreiter
  • LB Cam Brown

And finally, safety Julian Love was named the 10th team captain, hybrid captain or co-captain — whichever terminology you prefer.

Giants’ Julian Love, Jamie Gillan shine in emergency situation

When New York Giants kicker Graham Gano (concussion) went down, Julian Love, Jamie Gillan and Casey Kreiter all stepped up.

The New York Giants lost kicker Graham Gano early in the second quarter on Sunday night against the Cincinnati Bengals following busted coverage on a kickoff return.

After Bengals return man Chris Evans broke loose, Gano attempted to make a tackle on the 73-yard return. It did not go well and the veteran was later ruled out with a concussion.

That had significant ramification for the Giants, who are without a backup kicker or holder.

Enter punter Jamie Gillan and safety Julian Love, who were thrust into the roles of kicker and holder, respectively.

To the surprise of many, things went swimmingly. Gillan handled kickoff, field goal and point after attempt duties, while the Swiss Army Knife does what he always does — filled a need admirably. In fact, they were flawless.

With Love holding, Gillan connected on a 31-yard field goal and a point after attempt. He also booted two kickoffs out of the end zone and a third inside of it, which was only returned to the 21-yard line.

“I love kicking, I love punting, I love doing all of that stuff, so part of the competitor in me was a little disappointed Jamie got to kick off and not me,” long snapper Casey Kreiter told reporters with a laugh.

Kreiter was also tasked with showing Love how to hold on the fly.

“He’s such a good athlete, right?” Kreiter said of Love. “It was pretty simple, it was more just kind of show him what it looks like, snap him a couple balls on the sideline, give him the confidence I’m going to get you the ball that’s easy to catch, put it down this way and Jamie’s — he’s a good athlete, too, he’s a ball striker. We don’t try to oversimplify things in our room. It’s see ball, kick ball; grab ball, snap ball.”

Although the Giants are undoubtedly concerned with Gano’s health, they have to be pleased with how well Gillan, Love and Kreiter handled the emergency situation on the fly. It went better than anyone could have expected and likely gives the team confidence in the event a similar situation plays out during the regular season.

2022 Giants free agency: Contract details for new players

A breakdown of the contracts the New York Giants have handed out to free agents, as well as details of restructures and pay cuts.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen entered the new league year and free agency with very little money to spend. The idea was to clear upwards of $40 million in salary cap space while hunting for bargains on the open market.

Through a week and a half, the Giants have fared relatively well. They’ve been unable to trade either cornerback James Bradberry or running back Saquon Barkley, but they’ve found other ways to clear room.

New York has also added a number of new contracts, including multiple offensive linemen. But only one of them was a big-ish money signing.

Here’s a quick look at the basic contracts for all new signees, as well as some information on restructures and pay cuts.

Note: New details will be added as they become available.

The New York Giants are bringing back long snapper Casey Kreiter for another season, agreeing to terms on a new contract on Wednesday. Terms of the deal are pending.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the move.

The 31-year-old Kreiter has played every game for the Giants since being signed as a free agent in 2020. He had spent the previous four seasons as the Denver Broncos’ long snapper.

Kreiter was originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa in 2014. After two years on their practice squad, Kreiter was signed by the Broncos and won a spot on the roster as their starting long snapper.

Kreiter has played at a high level here with the Giants and has not missed a game since the beginning of the 2017 when he was with Denver.

Giants rule Sterling Shepard, two others out vs. Saints

The New York Giants have ruled WR Sterling Shepard, WR Darius Slayton and one other out against the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.

The New York Giants will take on the New Orleans Saints and an extremely hostile Caesars Superdome crowd this coming Sunday while shorthanded.

Wide receivers Sterling Shepard (hamstring) and Darius Slayton (hamstring) were unable to practice all week and have been officially ruled out. Ditto guard Ben Bredeson (hand).

Bredeson was expected to miss the game and it’s likely that former Baltimore Ravens center Matt Skura will replace him. Meanwhile, Kenny Golladay, who is dealing with a hip issue, and rookie receiver Kadarius Toney could see increased roles in Shepard and Slayton’s absence.

Finally, running back Saquon Barkley (knee) escaped designation for the first time this year.

The full and official injury report can be found below:

Out: OL Ben Bredeson (hand), WR Sterling Shepard (hamstring), WR Darius Slayton (hamstring)
