2 ex-Giants named to 2023 All-USFL Team

Two former members of the New York Giants have been named to the 2023 All-USFL Team.

The 2023 USFL regular season has come to a close and the playoffs are now underway. That also means it’s time for some year-end awards, including the All-USFL Team.

“We are very grateful to our players, coaches, and general managers for the brand of football played in USFL Season 2. There were a lot of difficult decisions to help determine the best players at 28 positions on offense, defense, and special teams,” said Daryl Johnston, President of Football Operations.

“There were many players who were worthy of recognition in our highly competitive second season. Every team had at least two players named All-USFL, which is proof of the remarkable parity across the league. USFL fans are the ultimate winners as they got to enjoy watching these outstanding athletes play some incredible football.”

Of those 28 players, two are former members of the New York Giants.

Wide receiver Corey Coleman, who plays for the Philadelphia Stars, spent three seasons with the Giants from 2018 through 2020. He led the USFL with 51 receptions for 669 yards while also adding four touchdowns.

Offensive tackle Jarron Jones, who plays for the Memphis Showboats, signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2017 and also spent some time on their practice squad in 2018. He started all 10 games this season and was named All-USFL for the second consecutive season.

Former first rounder Corey Coleman named to offensive All-USFL team

While Corey Coleman never found success with the Browns, he has found new life in the USFL

The Cleveland Browns did not hit it big when they selected Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft. In fact, Coleman was traded just two years later in what turned out to be one of the all-time great Hard Knocks scenes where he stormed into Hue Jackson’s office, exclaiming “If you don’t want me to play, why don’t y’all just trade me.”

He quickly burned out of the league after that, spending time with the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants. Experiencing a resurgence, however, with the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars as he has been named to the All-USFL offensive team.

On the year, Coleman racked up 669 yards receiving and four touchdowns on 51 catches for the Stars. After this breakout in the USFL, will Coleman get another shot in the NFL?

Chiefs release WR Corey Coleman from practice squad

The #Chiefs have created a spot on the practice squad by releasing veteran WR Corey Coleman.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to make changes to their practice squad.

A day after learning of WR/RB Jerrion Ealy’s suspension and re-signing WR Marcus Kemp, the Chiefs have released veteran WR Corey Coleman from the practice squad per the NFL’s daily personnel notice.

Coleman had signed to the team’s practice squad after Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. A former first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL draft, Coleman spent time on the Chiefs’ offseason roster trying to jump-start his career.

The veteran receiver hasnā€™t appeared in an NFL game since the 2018 season. In 2019, Coleman suffered an ACL injury that took him out for the year. In 2020, he spent the majority of the season on the practice squad with the Giants. In 2021, he was suspended for six games for violating the NFLā€™s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

What will the Chiefs look to do with Coleman’s spot on the practice squad? They’ll be at no shortage of options when it comes to veteran wide receivers if they decide to go that route. The Houston Texans cut former Chiefs draft pick Chris Conley. The Arizona Cardinals cut their former second-round pick Andy Isabella. The New England Patriots cut former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell.Ā

It’s possible that this move was done preemptively with more roster moves related to the 53-man roster on the horizon.

WATCH: Chiefs’ Corey Coleman training with renowned WR coach David Robinson

New #Chiefs WR Corey Coleman is training with one of the best private WR coaches in the NFL this offseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs took a flier on former first-round 2016 NFL draft pick Corey Coleman, who looks to reboot his NFL career after missing the 2021 NFL season.

Formerly with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, the 27-year-old Coleman isn’t taking this new opportunity with Kansas City lightly. In fact, he’s working this offseason with one of the most renowned private receiver coaches ā€” David Robinson. A former college wideout with Oklahoma during the mid-2000s, Robinson has made a career out of training NFL receivers.

Coleman has actually been working with Robinson since he was a prospect coming out of Baylor. The training that he received helped Coleman win the Biletnikoff Award in 2015 and get drafted No. 15 overall in the 2016 NFL draft. Now, with a huge opportunity in front of him with the Chiefs, Coleman is back “in the lab” and working with Robinson out in Texas.

Check it out:

That’s some pretty impressive footwork and change of direction from Coleman, especially after a year away from the game in 2021. The two years prior he’d been limited by an ACL injury suffered in 2019 training camp with the Giants. Even in this short video, it looks like he could suit up and play in a game tomorrow.

In the past, Robinson has worked with some NFL greats like Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders and Dez Bryant. Some of the current NFL receivers he’s worked with and continues to work with include Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin, Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett, Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy, Jaguars WR Christian Kirk and Browns WR Jakeem Grant. Robinson has even worked with some current Chiefs players before, including Mecole Hardman, Daurice Fountain and Ronald Jones.

Chiefs to sign former Giants WR Corey Coleman

The #Chiefs are set to sign a receiver who hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2018 per a new report.

A former NFL wide receiver is attempting a comeback with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are set to sign former Cleveland Browns and New York Giants WR Corey Coleman. A first-round draft pick out of Baylor in the 2016 NFL draft, Coleman hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2018 NFL season and he didn’t play anywhere in 2021. In 2019, he suffered an ACL injury in training camp that ended his season prematurely and in 2020 he spent the majority of the season on the practice squad in New York.

#NFLDraft history: Looking at every No. 15 overall pick selected since the 2000 #NFLDraft and the #Eagles chances of landing an impact player

The Eagles need impact players on both sides of the ball and with three first-round picks in April’s draft, Howie Roseman will have his best opportunity ever to add game-changing players to the roster.

After missing on picks like Jalen Reagor and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, Roseman is under pressure to not waste assets or opportunities while attempting to be the smartest man in the room.

Philadelphia currently has the 15th, 16th, and 19th overall picks and we’ll take a look at some of the impact players and draft bust that were selected with the 15th pick.

No team has been worse at drafting WRs than the Browns

It’s a reminder of just how far the Browns have come

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw33aqtym0ft0g player_id=none image=https://brownswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

One of the reasons Browns fans appreciate the newfound success under GM Andrew Berry and the current regime is because of the long-term suffering at the hands of prior regimes that just weren’t good at their jobs. Look no further than the utter ineptitude of drafting wide receivers.

From 2011 to 2020, the Browns tried several times to draft a wide receiver. Ten times, in fact. And with the blessed exception of Rashard Higgins, those picks have resulted in swings and misses.

Pro Football Focus tracked the 10-year draft success rate at each position group over the last decade. It’s not surprising to find the Browns finished dead last at wide receiver, especially when weighing the value of higher picks. The Browns finished just below the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs for the lowest valued success rate at drafting wideouts in the decade.

Swings and misses on Corey Coleman (1st round, 2016), Greg Little (2nd round, 2011) and Antonio Callaway (4th round, 2018) outweigh the positive selections of Higgins (5th round, 2016) and the promising Donovan Peoples-Jones (6th round, 2020). Two of the players, Jordan Payton (5th round, 2016) and Vince Mayle (4th round, 2015), combined for exactly one catch in brief NFL careers.

Thank goodness that dark era appears but a distant and bad memory.

Ex-Browns WR Corey Coleman suspended for substance abuse violations

Coleman was last with the New York Giants but hasn’t played since 2018

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman has been suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Commissioner Roger Goodell made the suspension official on Tuesday’s NFL transactions report.

Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reports that the substance abuse was related to performance-enhancing drugs.

Coleman is currently a free agent. He spent the first portion of the 2020 season on the New York Giants’ practice squad before being released in November. He has not played in an NFL game since 2018, also with the Giants.

The troubled wideout was a first-round pick by the Browns in 2016, No. 15 overall. He struggled throughout his two seasons in Cleveland, catching just 56 of the 131 passes thrown his way, netting 718 yards and five touchdowns. The Browns traded Coleman to Buffalo for a seventh-round pick during the 2018 preseason.

Coleman can still sign with a team and participate in the offseason activities, but he will miss the first six regular-season games upon his return to the NFL.

Giants cut Corey Coleman from practice squad

The New York Giants have shuffled their practice squad, cutting WR Corey Coleman and signing TE Nakia Griffin-Stewart.

For the second time this year, the New York Giants have parted ways with wide receiver Corey Coleman.

The team announced on Tuesday that Coleman had been cut from the practice squad in order to make room for tight end Nakia Griffin-Stewart, who was signed.

Coleman joined the Giants in 2018 under head coach Pat Shurmur and later missed the 2019 season due to a torn ACL. He returned this offseason under head coach Joe Judge and appeared to have a solid camp to the naked eye, but was released in September.

The Giants re-signed Coleman to their practice squad in October but he never managed to make it back to the field on game day.

With Kaden Smith on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the Giants needed an extra body at tight end, which led to this roster shuffle and the arrival of Griffin-Stewart.

Griffin-Stewart spent three seasons at Rutgers before transferring to Pittsburgh in 2019. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound tight end was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie but released after training camp. He also had a brief cup of coffee with the Green Bay Packers.
