Panthers release former 1st-round pick amidst flurry of moves on Tuesday

The Panthers announce a handful of moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are really trying to make things work on defense.

Tuesday afternoon played host to a flurry of moves for the team, as they announced three additions and five departures. Among the five players on the outs is outside linebacker Shaq Lawson, who was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago.

Lawson, a Central, S.C. native, was selected with the 19th overall pick of the 2016 draft by the Buffalo Bills. The Clemson University product was elevated to the main roster for this past Sunday’s 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders, where he recorded 14 defensive snaps.

Carolina also released fellow pass rusher Marquis Haynes Sr., who has now spent each of his seven NFL campaigns with the Panthers. Haynes Sr. saw action in Week 6 and Week 7, totaling one pressure over 41 snaps.

In addition, the Panthers waived inside linebacker Chandler Wooten and defensive lineman T.J. Smith from the 53-man roster while releasing defensive lineman Jayden Peevy from the practice squad.

Those moves helped make room for the signings of defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and outside linebacker Cam Gill to the active roster and rookie center Andrew Raym to the practice squad.

Panthers reportedly signing 2 players to active roster

The Panthers are reportedly set to sign a pair of defenders.

The Carolina Panthers are continuing to shuffle around their defense.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the team is signing outside linebacker Cam Gill and defensive lineman Jonathan Harris to their active roster. Gill will come over from the Detroit Lions’ practice squad while Harris moves on from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Gill spent the offseason in Carolina. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer appeared in the team’s preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills, where he injured his ankle.

The Panthers would later release Gill off injured reserve on Sept. 5.

Harris spent the bulk of his four NFL campaigns in Denver, including the 2022 season under current Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. The 6-foot-5, 295-pounder played in 31 games for the Broncos—amassing 80 combined tackles, a sack and six quarterback hits between 2019 and 2023.

Lions shuffle up the practice squad coming out of the bye week

Lions shuffle up the practice squad coming out of the bye week, adding two players and releasing two others

The Detroit Lions made some roster changes to the practice squad coming out of the bye week. Two new players have signed on, while the Lions released two current members of the practice squad.

Detroit added EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad and LB Cam Gill to the practice squad on Monday.

Muhammad is a familiar face for Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn from their Saints days. He was a 6th-round pick by New Orleans in 2017, though he bounced around several NFL teams since. He was most recently on the summer roster of the Dallas Cowboys, whom the Lions face this week.

Gill fits more as a SAM LB type. The 26-year-old has played three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and also spent time with the Carolina Panthers.

To make room, the Lions said goodbye to safety Erick Hallett and kicker Matthew McCrane from the practice squad. Neither player had been elevated during the season and both joined Detroit after the season started following preseason action on other teams.

Panthers sign 2 players on Monday

The Panthers are bringing two new faces after a workout on Monday.

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales appears to be bringing another familiar face into the fold.

As first reported by Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the team is set to sign outside linebacker Cam Gill after workout on Monday,. Gill has spent his entire four-year NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for whom Canales served as the offensive coordinator during the 2023 campaign.

A Sumter, S.C. native, Gill attended Wagner College from 2016 to 2019. He ended his stay in Staten Island, N.Y. with a decorated career—being honored as a two-time NEC Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time First-team All-NEC selection.

Gill, who went undrafted in 2020, would be signed by Tampa Bay. Over his 40 games for the Buccaneers, he amassed 29 combined tackles (one for a loss), 2.5 sacks and four quarterback hits.

The bulk of Gill’s work came on special teams, as the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder registered 768 total snaps on the unit in three seasons.

Carolina, per an official release, has also signed defensive lineman TJ Smith. Smith, 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, appeared in five games for the Minnesota Vikings between 2021 and 2023.
