Yetur Gross-Matos reportedly drawing interest from Panthers, others

Other teams may be sniffing around on pending free-agent OLB Yetur Gross-Matos.

If the Carolina Panthers want Yetur Gross-Matos back, they may have to fend off some competition on the open market.

According to Joseph Person of The Athletic, the outside linebacker is garnering some attention from multiple teams ahead of free agency. Person included the following about Gross-Matos amongst his post-combine takeaways from Sunday morning:

The 26-year-old Gross-Matos has drawn interest from the Panthers and other teams after his most productive season as a pass rusher. Gross-Matos finished with a career-high 4 1/2 sacks despite missing seven games while on injured reserve with what Frank Reich called a “pretty significant” hamstring injury. Gross-Matos has been solid setting the edge since arriving as a second-round pick from Penn State in 2020. Maybe he’s turning the corner as a pass rusher. But if the Panthers re-sign him, they’d still need another one.

Compared to his previous role as a 4-3 end, the former second-round pick thrived in the team’s new system under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Along with those 4.5 sacks, Gross-Matos also averaged his most pressures (19) per pass-rushing attempt (192) in his transition to a stand-up backer.

In addition to Gross-Matos, the Panthers are currently without fresh deals for fellow pass rushers Brian Burns and Marquis Haynes Sr.

Full list of 2024 Panthers free agents

The Panthers currently have 26 players slated for free agency in 2024.

Things have changed a bit since the last time we brought you this free agent list.

A few weeks back, the Carolina Panthers held on to a few of their own—re-signing tight end Stephen Sullivan and defensive linemen Nick Thurman LaBryan Ray to fresh deals.

So, let’s take an updated look at the team’s pending 2024 free agents.

4 Panthers do not participate in Thursday’s practice

Panthers K Eddy Piñeiro remained out of practice on Thursday.

Only four players were held out of practice on Thursday, including outside linebacker Marquis Haynes Sr. The sixth-year defender remains in concussion protocol after a scary scene from the team’s Week 17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Haynes Sr. was held back in Jacksonville for medical testing, but returned to Charlotte on Monday.

Also out was kicker Eddy Piñeiro, who sustained a hamstring injury prior to kickoff on New Year’s Eve. If Piñeiro is unable to suit up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Panthers will likely roll with Matthew Wright—who was signed to the practice squad on Tuesday.

Marquis Haynes Sr. posts message following scary Week 17 concussion

Panthers OLB Marquis Haynes Sr. sent out his thanks as he recovers from a concussion.

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Marquis Haynes Sr. has sent out his first message since Sunday’s scary events.

In the third quarter of the New Year’s Eve loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the sixth-year veteran collapsed onto the field multiple times following a tackle of quarterback C.J. Beathard. Haynes Sr.—who sustained a concussion on the play—was carted off, transported to a local medical facility and kept behind overnight for additional testing.

Per an official release from the team, he returned to Charlotte on Monday afternoon. The 30-year-old defender had this to post late Tuesday morning:

Haynes Sr., who began the season on injured reserve due to a lingering back issue, has played in just seven games in 2023. He’s made one start over those seven outings—totaling 16 combined tackles (three for a loss), 1.0 sack and two quarterback hits.

The Panthers have also stated that Haynes Sr. is currently in concussion protocol.

Panthers provide health update on Marquis Haynes Sr.

After staying overnight in Jacksonville on New Year’s Eve due to a concussion, Panthers OLB Marquis Haynes returned home to Charlotte on Monday.

As announced by the Carolina Panthers, outside linebacker Marquis Haynes Sr. returned to Charlotte on Monday afternoon. Haynes Sr., who sustained a concussion during Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, stayed behind at nearby Baptist Medical Center overnight.

The 30-year-old defender was injured in the third quarter of the New Year’s Eve contest upon tackling Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard. Haynes Sr. attempted to get up following the play, but fell back down multiple times before being tended to by the medical staff.

After a long delay, Haynes Sr. was carted off the field. He gave the crowd a thumbs-up sign as he was transported away.

Haynes Sr. began the 2023 campaign on injured reserve due to a back issue that flared up at the beginning of training camp. He made his return in Week 10, where he played 17 defensive snaps in the 16-13 loss.

Panthers Week 16 injury report: Brian Burns good to go vs. Packers

Not one Carolina Panthers player landed on the naughty list ahead of their Week 16 matchup against the Packers.

Compared to their last two outings, Friday’s practice was much more joyous for the Carolina Panthers.

Every active player was accounted for this afternoon, including the outside linebacker trio of Brian Burns, Yetur Gross-Matos and Marquis Haynes Sr. All three practiced in full after missing the past pair of sessions due to an illness and will not carry any game designations into this weekend’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Three others, however, will be bringing over at least a little doubt into Sunday. Tight end Ian Thomas (ankle), safety Sam Franklin Jr. (quadriceps) and outside linebacker Claudin Cherelus—who was designated to return from injured reserve this week—are all questionable.

Chuba Hubbard continues to carry the load for the Panthers offense.
