Jason Kelce on the most impressive thing about new Eagles’ OC Brian Johnson

Jason Kelce says Brian Johnson’s communication has been the most impressive thing about the Eagles new offensive coordinator

Brian Johnson may only be the Eagles’ offensive coordinator for a year or two, but he’s already impressed the future Hall of Fame center on the roster.

During his training camp Q&A with Philadelphia media, Kelce highlighted the one impressive thing Johnson already has going for him.

Kelce also harped on Johnson’s communication skills as offensive coordinator, an intangible that causes many NFL play-callers to falter at their jobs.

“I think one of the things that all of these coaches do, is they do a great job of communication,” Kelce said via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Shane (Steichen) was like that last year. Nick (Sirianni) is certainly like that, especially for a guy who doesn’t call the plays and is just the head coach. He’s very involved with what is happening still. It’s not to the point where you’re a micromanager, it’s just to the point where you understand the frame of reference everybody has. I think Brian is very much doing that already.”

Johnson has been a Hurts’ family friend for decades, and the former Utah quarterback and EA Sports cover guy is one of the fastest-rising head coaching candidates in the NFL.

Brian Johnson will enter the 2023 NFL regular season under immense pressure after taking over as offensive coordinator for the departed Shane Steichen.

He’s an emerging coaching star, and depending on how the Eagles’ offense continues to develop going forward, Johnson could be fast-tracked toward head coach Nick Sirianni needing to make another hire.

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports looked at the offensive X-Factor for all 32 NFL teams, and the offensive coordinator landed on the list for Philadelphia.

In 2021, the Eagles’ offense took off when then-new head coach Nick Sirianni gave up play-calling duties to focus more on holistic game management, allowing Shane Steichen to take over. The pivot to a run-heavy attack allowed the Eagles to build an efficient offense, which propelled them to the playoffs. Last year, Steichen helped Jalen Hurts evolve as a passer, and the offense hit even higher heights. Johnson was the quarterbacks coach during that run, and he obviously played a significant role in Hurts’ development. Now, though, he’s the coordinator and the play-caller. And that’s a new wrinkle. If he hits the ground running, things will run smoothly. If not, there may be some kinks to work out throughout the season.

A former college quarterback at Utah who has known the Hurts family for years, Johnson joined the Eagles after serving as the offensive coordinator for the University of Florida, helping get Kyle Trask and Kyle Pitts to the NFL.

Before that, Johnson was crucial in Dak Prescott earning All-SEC honors at Mississippi State.

He’ll now be tasked with ensuring the NFL’s most dominant offense keeps its identity while taking the next step in efficiency and innovation.

Brian Johnson has said everything right about putting his players into a position to succeed and utilizing what they do best.

On Wednesday, while meeting with the media, star tight end Dallas Goedert confirmed that the former quarterback’s coach is putting his spin on the retooled offense.

The Eagles averaged 28.1 points per game, third-most in the NFL, and it’ll be on the former Utah quarterback and Florida Gators offensive coordinator to take the system to another level without sacrificing offensive efficiency.

Philadelphia’s offense returns four of five starters along the offensive line and great potential at the right guard spot. Miles Sanders departed for Carolina in free agency, allowing the Eagles to sign Rashaad Penny and trade for D’Andre Swift.

Philadelphia has had one of the NFL’s most diverse staff for years, and this spring, one of their youngest assistants will participate in an accelerated coaching program.

The Coach Accelerator aims to increase exposure between owners, executives, and diverse coaching talent, providing ample opportunity to develop and build upon their relationships. In a change to the nomination process this year, clubs were able to nominate those from outside of their organization.

Brian Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator after spurning other offers, but his stay as a play caller in Philadelphia could be short-lived.

Paul Domowitch of The 33rd Team is high on Johnson’s future, naming him to a list of seven coordinators who’ll be 2024 head coaching candidates.

Johnson, 36, has shot up the charts as quickly as the quarterback he helped develop the last two years, Jalen Hurts. After two years as the Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach, Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator in February after Shane Steichen left to take the Colts’ head-coaching job.

Under Johnson’s tutelage, Hurts’ passer rating jumped from 22nd in 2021 to fourth last season. His yards-per-attempt average jumped from 15th to third, his interception percentage from 12th to fifth and his touchdowns-to-interceptions differential from plus-seven to plus-16. He finished third in rushing first downs. He had 10 in the Eagles’ three-point Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. His 23 rushing touchdowns in 2021-22 are the most in a two-year span by an NFL quarterback.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have Sean Desai, Marcus Brady and Brian Johnson represent the franchise at the NFL’s Coach Accelerator Program

Philadelphia has had one of the NFL’s most diverse staffs for years, and this spring they’ll be sending three more assistant coaches to the league’s accelerator program.

The Coach Accelerator aims to increase exposure between owners, executives, and diverse coaching talent, providing ample opportunity to develop and build upon their relationships. In a change to the nomination process this year, clubs were able to nominate those from outside of their organization.

The three Eagles staffers were among 40 participants this year that are attending based on their high potential to be considered for a Head Coach position in the future.

Johnson (OC) and Brady were among sixteen of the participants who will be returning from last year’s event.

the League announced plans to host the Coach Accelerator on May 21-23 at the Spring League Meeting in Minneapolis. The Spring Accelerator follows the inaugural Coach and Front Office Accelerator and the Front Office Accelerator hosted at previous League meetings in 2022.
