Breaking down Colts’ haul in Draft Wire’s latest mock draft

Who did the Colts grab in Draft Wire’s latest three-round mock/

We are in the middle of the biggest part of the offseason with the 2023 NFL draft coming at the end of the month, and the Indianapolis Colts are viewed as one of the tone-setters of the big weekend depending on what they choose to do.

This also is the time for projections and mock drafts as analysts work through several situations and potential scenarios that could take place over the final weekend of April.

Our friends over at Draft Wire conducted a massive three-round mock draft following the big moves made in free agency.

In this one, the Colts stayed put at No. 4 and selected a quarterback, and we’re here to break down the three picks they made in this mock:

Browns land Army EDGE Andre Carter II in The Athletic’s mock draft

The Browns landed the Army pass rusher in a recent mock draft.

We are now just three-and-a-half weeks out from the 2023 NFL Draft, and the Cleveland Browns will have to wait a long time to come on the clock after the trade for wide receiver Elijah Moore. However, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman included them in his recent mock draft despite not having a first round pick, and he sent them Army pass rusher Andre Carter II.

While Carter II did not test well at the NFL Scouting Combine, bulking up to 256 pounds but testing with subpar explosiveness, his production speaks for itself. He racked up 17 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks in 2021, adding another 7.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 3.5 sacks in 2022.

Browns 2023 NFL Draft Andre Carter II

Carter II is a complicated prospect. Coming from the Army Academy, Carter II had to meet weight requirements based on height. And at 6-foot-7, Carter had to stay thin. Also still in the academy leading up to the combine, Carter II could not hone in on training the way the rest of his cohort did.

Here is what coaches told Feldman about Carter II:

“He’s good. Really long. They just played him so wide. If you could get your mitts on him, he struggled. He didn’t have a great counter, didn’t have a bull rush. He was total speed.”

“That guy is almost goofy long. On video, coming into the game this year, I didn’t quite feel like he had the same presence as he did last year, but then he kicked our butt. On film, he doesn’t seem to have the twitchiness or have great power, but he’s so long that it creates some tough angles and leverage issues for blockers. It throws you off. My biggest question would be: Does he have the play strength in the run game versus the bigger bodies? Will he have the ability to hold up?”

A complicated evaluation, Carter II’s real play weight and ability to add muscle remain a complete mystery. The production is there, but his projection to the next level is a difficult one to project.

Giants put Andre Carter II through position drills at Army Pro Day

New York Giants defensive assistant Ben Burress led Andre Carter II through positional drills at Army’s Pro Day.

Army held their Pro Day this past Thursday at West Point and a few representatives from the New York Giants made the short drive up.

While there, Giants defensive assistant Ben Burress put edge rusher Andre Carter II through positional drills, reports Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network.

Senior Bowl participant Andre Carter II measured a shade under 6’7″ and 256 pounds. His 40 time came in at 4.86 seconds, and his short shuttle at 4.33 seconds. Carter’s three-cone was a swift 6.86 seconds.

Though Carter’s testing times are nowhere near elite, scouts in the league tell me they give prospects from the three military academies a pass. While most of the players who participated in the Senior Bowl or Combine spend months at facilities across the nation specifically training for those events, prospects such as Carter don’t have that luxury and must adhere to the protocols of the academies.

There had been some concern that Carter would be ineligible for the 2023 NFL draft due to his military commitments but an omnibus appropriations bill added language that select service-academy athletes could continue their playing clears via waiver from the Department of Defense.

That was obviously good news for Carter, who is a lock to be selected in the mid-rounds of April’s draft.

NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein hasn’t offered a pro comparison for Carter but says the developmental talent has a high ceiling down the road. Most anticipate it will take him two or three years to acclimate to the NFL and its strength and conditioning program.

Long and rangy, Carter is currently best suited as a 3-4 rush linebacker on passing downs, but is likely to develop into an every-down player with additional growth both physically and technically. Carter needs to play with more skilled hands and inject a little more glass into his on-field diet in order to meet force with force when the run game comes downhill at him. His explosive get-off and natural bend/agility at the top of the rush are enough to create early opportunities for himself as a quarterback hunter. Carter might need a longer runway to meet his potential, but if does his pass-rush homework, he could take a substantial leap forward as an odd or even front edge rusher by Year 3.

The Giants don’t necessarily have the space to add a multi-year developmental talent but Carter’s upside makes him an intriguing potential option.

4-Down Territory: Risers and fallers from the 2023 scouting combine

With the scouting combine in the rear view, 4 Down Territory’s Luke Easterling and Doug Farrar recap which NFL prospects’ draft stocks rose and fell the most.

Every week in “4-Down Territory,” Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire and Draft Wire go over the things you need to know about, and the things you need to watch, in the NFL right now. With the 2023 scouting combine wrapped up, it’s all about how the prospects did in the medicals, in the meeting rooms with NFL teams, and of course, on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium.

This week, Doug and Luke discuss:

00:00 – Intro

01:01 – Which offensive draft prospect helped himself with the combine drills?

05:29 – Which defensive draft prospect helped himself with the combine drills?

09:18 – Which offensive prospect failed to capitalize on it when the rubber hit the road?

13:36 – Which defensive prospect didn’t meet expectations at the combine?

Underwear Olympics: Stock up/down on EDGE prospects after testing

Who hurt and who helped their draft stock on Thursday?

The entire NFL world has its eyes on Indianapolis as the draft prospects pour in to test and try to help their draft stock. Thursday was a particular day of importance for the Cleveland Browns who need plenty of help on the defensive line. There is plenty of talent in this year’s edge rusher class both as stand-up rushers and players that can set the edge in the run game.

Though you can’t put a bunch of weight into athletic testing if the film isn’t good it can still validate some issues or some strengths you think you see on the tape. Let’s take a look at some edge rushers that helped and some that hurt their stock in Indy.

Vikings 2023 7-round mock draft: Matt Anderson’s 5.0

The Minnesota Vikings have a history of trading to maximize value. In the latest mock draft from @MattAnderson_8, he does just that

The NFL Scouting Combine is underway, and many coaches and general managers are down in Indianapolis taking part in the evaluation of the prospects that are slated to be taken in the NFL Draft. We heard Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell speak earlier this week about their plans for this offseason. While a lot will change between now and then, it’s always fun to try and guess what teams might do.

In this mock draft, I looked to move players for draft capital and move around in the draft to go get impact players. I used Pro Football Focus’ mock draft simulator and Rich Hill’s trade chart.

Prior to the draft I traded running back Dalvin Cook and a 2024 6th-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for the 84th overall pick.

Now, let’s take a look at the results!

10 dynamic prospects for the Eagles to watch at the NFL scouting combine

With the workouts set to begin, we’re looking at 10 dynamic players for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

The Eagles are at the NFL scouting combine and with two first-round picks for the second year in a row, they’ll look to retool with 18 pending free agents set to hit the open market.

Philadelphia could lose Isaac Seumalo and Miles Sanders on offense, but the unit is intact at the most critical positions and will likely use their six draft picks on dynamic defenders.

The Eagles have 9 key contributors on defense set for free agency, and GM Howie Roseman has acknowledged that he won’t be able to retain his core of free agents with Jalen Hurts set to land a huge contract extension.

With the onfield portion of the combine set to heat up, we’re looking at 10 dynamic prospects for the Eagles to watch.

Eagles’ biggest draft needs as the NFL Combine gets underway

We’re looking at the Philadelphia Eagles’ biggest NFL Draft needs as the Scouting Combine gets underway

The Eagles will have two first-round picks in April’s NFL Draft, 18 pending free agents, and a contract extension for quarterback Jalen Hurts, meaning the roster will look different going forward.

Some of the usual suspects or names you’ve grown to love will move on, while younger, more athletic, and dynamic replacements will join a roster looking for a return to the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia’s team brass is in Indianapolis to evaluate some of the top talent available and we’re previewing the Eagles’ biggest draft needs.

Buyers Beware: 5 prospects the Browns should let other teams over-draft

Buyers beware on these prospects.

We are now in the thick of the pre-draft process as the Senior Bowl has come to an end and the NFL Scouting Combine is set to take place next week. In need of infiltrating their roster with young talent, the Cleveland Browns need to nail down the 2023 NFL Draft with the eight picks they currently hold.

They do not need to overthink this, as there will be some real value on the board when they come on the clock with the 42nd overall pick. However, there is some highly thought of players who just do not show that same level of hype on tape. Here are five 2023 NFL Draft prospects the Browns would be wise to let other teams over-draft.
