247Sports senior writer Brad Crawford ranked the top 10 recruiters in the 2021 class yesterday and had Wisconsin special teams coordinator and “ace-in-the-hole recruiter” Chris Haering No. 10 on his list.

Haering is in his sixth season in Madison and this recruiting period was the lead recruiter for five members of the Badgers’ 2021 class, two of whom being four-star offensive tackle J.P. Benzschawel and four-star safety Hunter Wohler.

The Badger coach is one of six Big Ten names on the list with No. 1, No. 3, No. 6 and No. 9 all part of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ top-notch recruiting effort.

Wisconsin currently has the No. 12-ranked 2021 class in the nation and No. 3 in the Big Ten, both the highest at this point in program history with more top names yet to announce their commitment decisions.

[lawrence-newsletter]Although there are no specifics surrounding athletics, we now know how the University is planning on running fall semester for students. The university announced today that it will be conducting what they call a “smart restart” plan in order to safely have students back on campus.

There will be a mix of in-person and virtual instruction as expected, although a new piece of information in the release is that the hybrid instruction will only take place until Thanksgiving break. After break, all instruction will be online as well as final exams.

Here is what Chancellor Rebecca Blank had to say on the restart:

“The health and safety steps we are announcing today are rigorous, thorough and backed by science. We believe they will go far in minimizing the risk to our campus community while allowing our students to return to many of the traditions and experiences that make a Badger education so valued.”

There were four specific bullet points in the outline of the plan:

  • The health and safety of everyone in our campus community will continue to be our top priority as we bring more people back to campus. New health measures are being put in place for everyone on campus.
  • Academic instruction will return to campus with a mix of in-person and remote courses until the Thanksgiving recess. After Thanksgiving, we’ll switch to a virtual format for all courses for the final nine days of instruction plus exams.
  • Students will live on campus this fall. University Housing is developing new safety measures and policies for residents and staff.
  • To be successful, we’ll need all our students and employees to share the responsibility of keeping our campus community healthy and safe. More information will be added to this site in the weeks to come as our plan continues to evolve. While this fall will be different than anything we’ve seen before, we look forward to the special moments that only a Wisconsin Experience can deliver.

2021 quarterback commit now a four-star prospect after a 247Sports recruiting rankings update

247Sports updated their recruiting rankings today and in doing so bumped 2021 quarterback recruit Deacon Hill from a three-star prospect to a four-star.

Hill’s fourth star now gives the Badgers six Top247 prospects and seven four-stars in their 2021 class, a class that is lining up to be the best in program history and in the ballpark of top-10 in the nation.

247Sports director of scouting Barton Simmons weighed in on why Hill made such a big jump before even taking the field for his senior season.

“I love the upside with Deacon,” 247sports national director of scouting Barton Simmons explained. “He’s a big dude and he’s not going to run away from anybody, but he’s more athletic than you think in terms of his pocket movements and agility.

“He also looks like he has one of the strongest arms in this class. He can flick the ball downfield effortlessly regardless of conditions or base set-up. I think delivery is getting more and more important in today’s game and he can play with arm angles really effectively. He’s also a first-year starter with really strong athletic pedigree who seems to me to have a really high ceiling.

“There’s just a lot to like to me.”

Other players who received a bump in their rating include three-star defensive end Mike Jarvis and three-star running back Loyal Crawford, both players towards the bottom of the class in terms of each player’s national ranking but also guys on the rise as they prepare for their senior campaigns.

Michigan State football commit Ethan Boyd rises in latest 247Sports rankings

Boyd jumps to the top of MSU’s class in 247’s latest re-rank.

The latest re-rank done by recruiting website 247Sports was quite kind to at least one Michigan State football commit.

East Lansing’s Ethan Boyd, a 6-foot-7 offensive tackle, jumped to an 88 rating, which puts him at the top of MSU’s 2021 class. Boyd is now ranked by 247 as the No. 12 prospect in Michigan, up nine spots from his previous ranking of 21. The jump was enough to put Boyd atop MSU’s class in the 247Sports composite rankings as well, which factor in scores from other recruiting services.

Elsewhere in the class there wasn’t much movement up or down for MSU commits. Oak Park running back Davion Primm rose one spot in the state of Michigan, as did Warren Mott defensive end Tyson Watson. Defensive back Atontion Boothe, out of DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, fell ten spots in his state rankings after dropping from an 84 rating to an 83 on 247.

MSU’s 2021 class is currently ranked No. 51 in the country and No. 11 in the Big Ten.

[jwplayer 2TGD1KWP]

BREAKING: Alabama lands 4-star WR out of Florida

The Alabama Crimson Tide kept its momentum going on the recruiting trail with the addition of another four-star prospect.

After a rocky start with its 2021 class, the Alabama Crimson Tide continue to pick things up on the recruiting trail. On Tuesday night, Nick Saban and company picked up a major commitment from one of the top receivers in the state of Florida.

Christian Leary, a four-star prospect from Edgewater, chose announced via his Twitter account that he had chosen the Tide over Oklahoma, Auburn and several other top programs:

Leary is the No. 130 overall prospect, the No. 23 wide receiver and the No. 20 player from the state of Florida, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Charles Power with 247Sports had this to say about the 5-foot-9, 180-pound receiver:

Shorter in stature with a thick, developed lower body. Has added around ten pounds of mass from his sophomore to junior years of high school One of the faster wide receivers on the track in the 2021 cycle and posted some sensational times in the 100 meters early in the spring prior to his senior season. Helped Edgewater to a state title berth as a junior. Productive as a receiver and direct-snap run threat. Transfers his high-level top-end speed to the football field. Pulls away from defenders with ease once in the open field with a long, explosive stride. Dangerous in several facets and a threat to score whenever he touches the ball. Skilled in the open field, whether it’s in catch and run situations, as a rusher or return man. Also has the play strength to run with some power. Shows ability to locate and track the ball as a downfield target. Looks like a multi-purpose, versatile offensive weapon at the next level. Will need to continue adding to his skill set as a route-runner as he runs a fairly limited route tree to this point- even more important for a shorter wide receiver. Projects as a Power Five starter with the upside to develop into a NFL Draft selection.

Leary is commitment No. 8 for Alabama’s 2021 class, which now consists of one five-star, six four-stars and one three-star. Prior to his commitment, the Tide had the No. 29 overall class (No. 8 in the SEC), but his pledge should mean a sizable jump in those rankings in the near future.
