Philadelphia Eagles vs Detroit Lions Game Preview

Why Philadelphia Eagles Will Win

Here comes the Philadelphia passing game.

Jalen Hurts already had a good group to throw to, and then the Eagles landed AJ Brown to add to the mix. Now it all gets aired out against a Detroit secondary that struggled to get off the field, allowed the most yards per attempt, and doesn’t appear to be appreciably better.

Hurts should go off, the running game should be okay behind a terrific Eagle offensive line, and Detroit has to prove it can keep up the pace on a consistent basis.

Hurts proved time and again that he can get the O going late if things aren’t going well. Detroit did that a bit late last year, but it can’t get behind or Philly will grind it out.

Week 1 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Detroit Lions Will Win

Here comes the Detroit running game.

D’Andre Swift and the Lion backfield are good, the offensive line is great, and now the running game should pound away a bit more.

The defense might still be a question mark even with the improvements up front, but the offense has enough parts to be more efficient. Better running game, easier third down chances, better overall offensive production – that should kick in right away against an Eagle defense that’s talented, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Eagles beefed up the front seven with Jordan Davis about to be a key part of the interior and with a seemingly improved linebacking corps.

Detroit will be more physical, and it’ll be better than it’s been over the last few years, but the secondary will let it down late once Hurts gets into a groove.

Philadelphia Eagles’ roster comparison: 2021 vs. 2022 defense

Howie Roseman has dramatically upgraded the roster, and we’re comparing Philadelphia Eagles’ 2021 defense to the retooled 2022 version

The Eagles returned to the postseason in 2021 a year or two ahead of schedule, and their 31-15 road loss to the Buccaneers signaled a change in roster building.

He was often criticized for not valuing the linebacker position, and GM Howie Roseman gave the group a complete renovation, signing a pass rusher, an athletic marvel in coverage while drafting the top defender from college football’s best team.

Knowing he needed to address the wide receiver position, Roseman traded several picks to the Titans in return for a young superstar, A.J. Brown.

With the 2022 regular season now just a week away, we’re comparing the rosters from last season and this current team on both sides of the football, finishing up with the defense.

NFL Letdown Games for Every Team

What are the potential letdown games for every NFL team? They’re the battles that should be a problem.

What games are the ones each NFL team has to look out for? It’s a LONG season with plenty of lulls, so which games are set up to be a letdown moment for every team?

Predicting each outcome takes into account location, scheduling fatigue, matchup intensity, and much more. These are the games – including the sandwich battles between two giant opponents – that each team should probably win, but might have issues.

2022 NFL Schedules

Where Lane Johnson landed in an ESPN ranking of the NFL’s top 10 offensive tackles for 2022

Where Philadelphia Eagles’ bookends Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata landed in an ESPN ranking of the NFL’s top offensive tackles for 2022

The Eagles have one of the NFL’s top offensive lines, and that ranking is buoyed by two bookend tackles that could be All-Pro in 2022.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has released his annual top 10 list for all the positions, and Philadelphia had two players get recognized, with Lane Johnson returning to elite status.

Johnson is No. 7 on the list, landing behind Laremy Tunsil (Texans), who was No. 6 on the list.

Johnson surged back into the top 10 after injuries wrecked his 2020 campaign. His 94.9% pass block win rate was second best among offensive tackles, and he was solid against the run (76.2% run block win rate, 17th at the position). All of this was good enough for an All-Pro second-team honor.

Jordan Mailata made the honorable mentions list after landing at No. 4 in the NFL in run block win rate (78.9%) among tackles.

Trent Williams (49ers) was No. 1 on the list, followed by Tristan Wirfs (Buccaneers), David Bakhtiari (Packers), Rashawn Slater (Chargers), and Tyron Smith (Cowboys).

1 burning question for the Eagles at every defensive position following offseason program

1 burning question for the Philadelphia Eagles at every defensive position following the offseason workout program

The Eagles avoided a massive rebuild from an on-the-field standpoint, going 9-8 last season, while also securing the final playoff berth.

The retool has been accelerated, after an apparent plan of action for immediate improvement this offseason.

Even with the additions of Haason Reddick, Kyzir White, Nakobe Dean, and others, there are still questions that need to be answered with training camp set to open in less than a month.

Who is currently the Eagles’ most underrated player?

Who is currently the Philadelphia Eagles’ most underrated player?

If the NFL draft was based on overall production from college, T.J. Edwards would have been a surefire first or second-round pick coming out of Wisconsin.

Because Edwards isn’t the fastest or most athletic middle linebacker, he slipped and went undrafted, eventually signing a contract with the Eagles after the 2019 selection process.

Edwards made the roster and excelled on special teams during his first two seasons before finally breaking out in 2021.

Pro Football Focus recently looked at the most underrated player on all 32 NFL teams and Edwards made the list for Philadelphia.

Edwards has been underrated for virtually his entire playing career. A star at Wisconsin, he posted elite PFF grades but was a marginal and undersized athlete, causing him to go undrafted in 2019. From there, he had to earn his spot by excelling on special teams, in the preseason and then eventually in the regular season. At every step along the way, Edwards earned good PFF grades and is now a capable starter. In 2021, he earned a 75.5 overall PFF grade, putting in at least above-average marks in every facet of linebacker play. Edwards is walking proof that players can still thrive in the NFL without elite physical tools.

Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon refused to play the former undrafted rookie out of Wisconsin until relegating Eric Wilson to the bench. The former Wisconsin linebacker was the best player at the position from there.

Edwards finished as the team’s second-leading tackler with a career-best 130 combined tackles, 5 pass deflections, 5 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hits, and 1 fumble recovery.

He’ll enter 2022 as a starter at middle linebacker, but rookie Nakobe Dean and free agent signee Kyzir White loom large.

Traditionally and statistically, Day 3 of the NFL Draft is a total wasteland. You’re far, far better packaging your picks to move up into the top three rounds of a future draft – the odds of getting a consistently decent starter are shockingly small.

But every team thinks it can make magic out of the Day 3 mess of prospects, and it’s worth a shot to dumb-luck into a possible mainstay. What are the remaining needs that need to be filled for each team? Here are every team’s picks so far with the possibilities of who they could get.

Of course this all blows up once the trades start flying, but the idea is to give a rough snapshot of what each team might be able to do.

Eagles schedule projection: How many wins in Philadelphia’s final 7 games?

Predicting Philadelphia #Eagles’ remaining 2021 schedule: before the season we projected 10 wins for #FlyEaglesFly, now with 8 weeks remaining and 7 games, how many wins will they have?

The Eagles are 4-6 on the season after a dominant win at Empower Field over the AFC West, Denver Broncos.

Philadelphia’s record is a game below what we predicted prior to the season kickoff, but Nick Sirianni and his coaching staff have kept the players engaged and working hard as they work to find an identity.

Zach Ertz has been traded, Miles Sanders is back and Brandon Brooks should be returning any day now

With the Eagles set for an 8-week stretch that includes 4 straight division games to close out the season, we’re forecasting the next 7 games for the Birds.
