Sam Hartman officially commits to Notre Dame

Boom.

The worst-kept secret for Notre Dame this offseason finally has come to fruition. Rumors have been persistent about Wake Forest quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] transferring to the Irish, even before [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag]’s MVP performance in the Gator Bowl. Once Hartman arrived in South Bend for a visit, his commitment to the Irish seemed imminent. Now, it’s official:

Hartman, the all-time leading passer in Demon Deacons history with 12,967 yards and 110 touchdown passes, will be the second Irish starting quarterback in three years to come to the program via the transfer portal. The Irish made it to the Fiesta Bowl thanks largely to former Wisconsin quarterback [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag]. Now, the quarterback controversy the Irish had in 2022 will be nonexistent in 2023 with Hartman’s arrival.

With Hartman under center, a team that hasn’t had a true star at receiver since [autotag]Chase Claypool[/autotag] could see someone emerge as the next one. Even if there isn’t one, everyone in that receiving corps stands to see their production go up. Either way, Irish fans are going to be watching some very exciting offense this fall.

Jim Harbaugh releases statement on Michigan football future

This should put things to rest, but it won’t.

Michigan football is coming off if its second-straight Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff appearance. Yet, the program seems to be in flux for the second-straight offseason.

More than rumors, Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh has appeared to be a candidate for several NFL teams hoping to lure him back to the league. He even had a call with the Panthers brass to discuss their opening.

Well, this time around, Harbaugh decided to get ahead of it, releasing a statement saying he fully intends to remain at Michigan. Yet, the speculation will continue until he has signed a new contract commensurate with what coaches with his record tend to make in the college ranks.

Statement

I am aware of the rumors and speculation over the past few days. College and NFL teams have great interest in all our personnel, from players to coaches to staff, and I truly believe that is a testament to the strength of our University of Michigan football program.

As I stated in December, while no one knows what the future holds, I expect that I will be enthusiastically coaching Michigan in 2023. I have spoken with President Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel and appreciate their support of me and our program. Our mission as Wolverines continues, and we are preparing for the 2023 season with great passion and enthusiasm. As our legendary coach Bo Schembechler said, “Those Who Stay Will be Champions.”

LSU signee listed as a top performer during All-American bowl practice

Whit Weeks is garnering some attention in San Antonio.

[autotag]Whit Weeks[/autotag] is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker from Watkinsville, Georgia, where he played for Oconee County High School. The four-star linebacker signed to play at LSU next fall after a great senior season.

Right now, he is working on putting the finishing touches on his high school career in San Antonio, Texas, as he prepares for the All-American Bowl. He’s not the only Tiger there, as he is joined by fellow signees [autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag], [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], [autotag]DJ Chester[/autotag], and [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag].

After each practice, On3 has been naming their standouts from the day. After Day 2, Weeks made the cut for their daily top 10.

Whit Weeks continues to look like the most comfortable operator in space among linebackers at the All-American Bowl. The LSU signee backed up his strong first day with another stellar showing in coverage on Wednesday. Weeks won the majority of his 1-on-1 reps during the afternoon, showing fluidity and feel while covering running backs. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder is controlled and quickly reacts and closes on routes. We’ve also liked what Weeks has shown in 9-on-7 drills, flashing the ability to diagnose plays quickly. Weeks ranks as the No. 233 overall prospect in the On300.

The All-American Bowl will kick off this Saturday at noon CT on NBC.

Former Alabama RB Trey Sanders transferring to TCU

Former Alabama running back Trey Sanders announced that he is transferring to TCU after four seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Another Alabama transfer has announced where he is going to continue his college career. On Thursday, former Alabama running back Trey Sanders announced that he is transferring to TCU. He becomes the third Alabama transfer to join the Horned Frogs this offseason. The other two are Tommy Brockermeyer and JoJo Earle.

Sanders suffered a season-ending injury during his freshman campaign. Then, in 2020, he got re-injured after being involved in a car accident. However, he did have 30 carries for 134 yards before that.

In 2022, Sanders saw limited action and had just 14 carries for 80 yards. With a collection of running backs returning, he found it in his best interest to enter the transfer portal. Now, he will be heading to Fort Worth to play for TCU which is currently in the College Football Playoff with a national title on the line. This could be a very good decision for Sanders in the long run as he looks to prove himself before playing at the next level.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama players that have entered the transfer portal or are playing elsewhere.

Florida OT target has decision locked in ahead of Saturday commitment

Offensive tackle Caden Jones will choose among Florida, Houston and Texas A&M on Saturday during the All-American Bowl.

One of Florida’s top remaining targets in the 2023 recruiting class is De La Salle (Gretna, Louisiana) offensive tackle [autotag]Caden Jones[/autotag]. He’ll announce his commitment to Florida, Houston or Texas A&M on Saturday at the All-American Bowl, and Jones says he’s locked in with his decision days before going public with it, according to Gators Online.

“It’s crazy. I’m speechless. As a kid, you grow up watching these games. To say you’re going to announce there is an absolute blessing,” Jones said to On3’s Billy Embody.

While it’s never safe to assume that a team will land a recruit until it happens, Jones is considered as strong of a Florida lean as it gets. The On3 recruiting prediction machine lists UF as an overwhelming favorite with 95.8% odds of landing Jones on Saturday.

The Aggies didn’t become a major threat to the Gators in this recruiting race until the end of the year, and a December official visit to the Swamp seems to have kept the gap wide enough for Florida to stay the favorite.

The On3 consensus ranks Jones at No. 436 overall in the class of 2023 and at No. 27 among offensive tackles. The site’s individual rankings consider Jones a four-star recruit, though.

Gators fans can watch Jones’ commitment live on Saturday, Jan. 7 on NBC at 1 p.m. EST.

Ohio State football 2023 NFL draft declaration tracker

We keep track of all the NFL draft declarations those Ohio State players with eligibility left (eight of them) make as they happen. #GoBucks

Now that the Ohio State football season is over it’s time to turn our attention to next year. The Buckeyes have a great deal of talent coming back, but, as usual, several players have NFL draft decisions to make.

Players expected to go in the first couple of rounds of the 2023 NFL draft are more than likely gone, but those that are mid- to late-round projections have to take a hard look in the mirror and decide what they want to do about their future.

So that you can follow along, we’ve made it easy by creating an Ohio State football 2023 NFL draft declaration tracker to stay up with those that are making decisions. There are a few players to keep an eye on and it gets a little tricky when still dealing with the COVID-19 extra year some guys might want to take. Either way, we’ll update the tracker as soon as we get word on any decisions that come along. The deadline for players to declare for the draft is Jan. 16, so expect the news to come fast and furious.

UGA kicker Jack Podlesny accepts invitation to Senior Bowl

Georgia football kicker Jack Podlesny has accepted an invitation to the 2023 Senior Bowl

Georgia Bulldogs kicker Jack Podlesny, who has already accepted an invitation to play in the 2023 Hula Bowl, has accepted an invitation to the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Will Podlesny play in both events? It is completely feasible for the senior kicker to participate in both postseason all-star games.

The 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl will be played in Mobile, Alabama, at 2:30 p.m. ET on Feb. 4, 2023. Orlando, Florida, hosts the 2023 Hula Bowl, which will be played at noon ET on Jan. 14.

Entering the national championship, Podlesny is 25 of 30 on field goal attempts. The senior kicker is perfect on extra points throughout his career at Georgia. Podlesny has served as Georgia’s primary kicker for the last three seasons.

Podlesny was named as the 2022 SEC special teams player of the year.

Podlesny accepting a pair of postseason invitations means that he is expected to enter the 2023 NFL draft. Georgia will likely look to Jared Zirkel to handle the kicking duties for the 2023 college football season.

Podlesny could be one of the only kickers selected in the 2023 NFL draft.

Zirkel, a redshirt sophomore, will face competition from incoming freshman Peyton Woodring, who is ranked as the No. 1 kicker in the class of 2023.
