LSU early enrollee announces he is leaving the football program

Safety Michael Daugherty is moving on after his brief stay at LSU.

LSU true freshman safety [autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag] has withdrawn from LSU and intends to enter the transfer portal, he announced via his Twitter account on Saturday.

The former three-star recruit in the 2023 signing class from Loganville, Georgia, pledged to the Tigers in December over North Carolina, Arkansas, Auburn and others. The 5-foot-10.5, 174-pound safety early enrolled, but he will be utilizing his free, one-time transfer to go elsewhere.

“Becoming a Tiger was a blessing and I am thankful for the opportunity to meet great coaches, people and teammates,” Daugherty said in his announcement post. “I will always value the memories, teachings and traits of excellence created. Thank you to all the additional personal for the consoulment (sic) that help mold me into a better man.

“I Thank to God for this opportunity, but after carful (sic) consideration and discussions with my parents, respect my decision to withdraw from LSU and enter the transfer portal.”

The No. 549 player nationally coming out of high school, Daugherty will have four remaining years of eligibility at his next stop.

This LSU football signee is set to make an instant impact for the Tigers

Dashawn Womack is one of two composite five stars in LSU’s class, per 247Sports.

LSU returns a lot of production on offense in 2023, but that isn’t exactly the case on defense.

The edge on the defensive line is an area of concern, especially. Both starters from 2022 in [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag] are gone, and while LSU added some talent in the portal with experienced players like [autotag]Bradyn Swinson[/autotag], there could be an opportunity for freshmen to see some reps.

That’s where [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag] comes in. The Baltimore prospect was one of two composite five stars in LSU’s 2023 class, per 247Sports, and he was listed by On3 as one of several blue-chip prospects who could be poised to make an immediate impact.

Dashawn Womack has a case as the most ready to play EDGE prospect in the class. At 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, Womack is not a projection physically. He registers as a top athlete in the combine setting and carries that athleticism over to the field. Womack was dominant as a senior, tallying 15 sacks while playing a national schedule at Baltimore St. Frances Academy. The LSU signee has some technical refinement with quick hands and pass rush moves. The ability to create pressure off the edge and finish with violence puts him in a good position to fill BJ Ojulari‘s role in LSU’s defense. We also wouldn’t be surprised to see Womack’s fellow LSU signee Zalance Heard lock down the right tackle spot in Baton Rouge as a freshman and start opposite his former high school teammate, Will Campbell.

Womack ranks as a five-star prospect and checks in at No. 12 overall in the On300.

LSU saw a true freshman make a lot of plays off the edge this fall in [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag], who will likely shift more into an off-ball role once he becomes a better run defender. Womack could have a chance to be the Tigers’ next true freshman breakout player.

A look at LSU football’s full 2023 signing class after national signing day

The Tigers finish with the No. 6 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

It was a bit of an anticlimactic national signing day for LSU — expectedly so.

The Tigers signed all 25 commits (except for [autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag], who flipped to Oregon) during December’s early signing period. After missing the cut for five-star athlete [autotag]Nyckoles Harbor[/autotag], coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] essentially moved on to recruiting the 2024 class.

Nothing changed for LSU’s class on Wednesday’s national signing day. It still ranks sixth nationally, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and that’s paired with the top-ranked transfer haul in the country.

It’s been a big offseason already for the Tigers, and with that in mind, let’s take a look at LSU’s final 2023 signing class.

Two LSU signees make Max Preps All-America team

A couple of LSU signees were named high school All-Americans by Max Preps.

A couple of LSU signees received national recognition this week.

EDGE [autotag]Da’Shawn Womack[/autotag] and CB [autotag]Jeremiah Hughes[/autotag] were both named to Max Preps’ high school All-America team.

On Womack, Max Preps wrote, “Racked up 15 sacks and 26 tackles for loss playing against top notch competition every week.” Womack is a five-star according to On3 and 247. He’s a candidate to make an immediate impact with LSU set to lose major pass-rushing production.

They cited Hughes’ ability to create turnovers while playing for one of the best teams in the country. Hughes is a three-star on the consensus ratings but has four stars from ESPN.

Hughes ran track and high-jumped in high school. He’s noted for his athletic ability that allowed him to pick off seven passes as a senior. The talent is there and with LSU’s secondary being rebuilt again, Hughes could fight for some playing time.

Getting young corners in the room along with the transfers was pivotal for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] this cycle.

247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong offers high praise for LSU signees at All-American Bowl

The four Tigers who attended the week’s festivities in San Antonio impressed, according to Wiltfong.

The All-American Bowl was played on Saturday in San Antonio, and the quartet of LSU players on hand made some buzz.

All of them received superlatives from the week, per multiple publications, and now there’s even more excitement surrounding a 2023 recruiting class for the Tigers that already ranked squarely in the national top 10.

LSU had receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], offensive tackle [autotag]DJ Chester[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Whit Weeks[/autotag] on hand this week, and 247Sports national director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong offered high praise for all four.

Here’s what Wiltfong said about the group after the conclusion of the week.

I love how potent LSU’s offense could be with guys like receiver Jalen Brown and tight end Ka’Morreun Pimpton. If Brown has daylight, he’s a blur that can light up the scoreboard on any touch and could also be a fun return guy. Pimpton is going to stretch the field and create mismatches. Offensive lineman DJ Chester could play anywhere across the front for the Tigers as well. Future LSU linebacker Whit Weeks validated his stock as much as anyone. An every-down player that was around the football a lot during practice and in the game.

After a successful Year 1 under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] that saw the team win 10 games and reach the SEC Championship, expectations will be understandably high in 2023 after landing such a strong signing class with potential immediate impact players like these.

LSU signee listed as a top performer during All-American bowl practice

Whit Weeks is garnering some attention in San Antonio.

[autotag]Whit Weeks[/autotag] is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker from Watkinsville, Georgia, where he played for Oconee County High School. The four-star linebacker signed to play at LSU next fall after a great senior season.

Right now, he is working on putting the finishing touches on his high school career in San Antonio, Texas, as he prepares for the All-American Bowl. He’s not the only Tiger there, as he is joined by fellow signees [autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag], [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], [autotag]DJ Chester[/autotag], and [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag].

After each practice, On3 has been naming their standouts from the day. After Day 2, Weeks made the cut for their daily top 10.

Whit Weeks continues to look like the most comfortable operator in space among linebackers at the All-American Bowl. The LSU signee backed up his strong first day with another stellar showing in coverage on Wednesday. Weeks won the majority of his 1-on-1 reps during the afternoon, showing fluidity and feel while covering running backs. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder is controlled and quickly reacts and closes on routes. We’ve also liked what Weeks has shown in 9-on-7 drills, flashing the ability to diagnose plays quickly. Weeks ranks as the No. 233 overall prospect in the On300.

The All-American Bowl will kick off this Saturday at noon CT on NBC.

Where LSU’s recruiting class stands in the 247Sports Composite Rankings after the early signing period

The Tigers are just outside the top five nationally following the early signing period.

The three-day early signing period is officially in the books as LSU turns its attention to a Citrus Bowl contest against Purdue on Jan. 2 and welcoming its early enrollees to campus.

Early signing day was a bit anti-climactic for Tigers fans. Coach Brian Kelly’s staff lost out on the sweepstakes for [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag], a five-star IMG Academy cornerback who picked Alabama. It also failed to land uncommitted four-star Mississippi defensive back [autotag]Isaac Smith[/autotag], who pledged to Mississippi State, and it lost one commit in cornerback [autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag], who flipped to Oregon.

However, it wasn’t all bad. LSU pulled a flip of their own, bringing in Vanderbilt tight end commit [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], and it signed all 25 of its commits, excluding Austin.

The Tigers aren’t necessarily done yet as the normal signing period opens in February. They will have at least one target committing then in five-star athlete [autotag]Nyckoles Harbor[/autotag].

But the Tigers are mostly done in 2023, and we have a good idea of what this class is going to look like when it’s all said and done. Here’s where it ranks in the 247Sports Composite Rankings after the early signing period.

LSU is deemed a winner on national signing day by On3

It was about as good an early signing day as the Tigers could ask for as they signed 25 commits.

LSU had a near-flawless national signing day as it entered the day with 25 commitments and ended it with 25 signees.

The only hiccup the Tigers had was [autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag] flipping his commitment to Oregon, but LSU filled that spot after they flipped four-star tight end [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag] from Vanderbilt.

Other than that, the only miss the Tigers coaching staff had was that they weren’t able to pry [autotag]Isaac Smith[/autotag] away from Mississippi State.

They were named one of the winners from national signing day by On3.

Much like Texas, nearly all of LSU’s work was done prior to Wednesday. But Brian Kelly and Co. finished strong by holding off a late charge from Auburn for offensive lineman DJ Chester and beat out Texas to flip four-star tight end Ka’Morreun Pimpton from Vanderbilt.

The Tigers still have a few names left to keep an eye on between now and February, with five-star cornerback Desmond Ricks announcing tomorrow and five-star athlete Nyckoles Harbor set to go in January.

LSU entered the day needed to address depth issues at tight end, at the defensive line, and in the secondary. The Tigers signed three tight ends (Markway, McGohan, and Pimpton) three defensive linemen (Womack, Howard, and Carpenter), and six defensive backs (Toviano, Jackson, Yaites, Daugherty, Hughes, and Stamps).

Plus they added four offensive linemen (Mubenga, Adams, Chester, and Heard) to help that group as well. I’d say it was a great day to be a fan of LSU.

Where does LSU’s recruiting class rank after national signing day?

LSU is still pushing for a top-five class after Day 1 of the early signing period.

The first day of the early signing period has come and gone in a whirlwind. LSU entered the day with 25 commitments and came away with 25 signees. One of those guys, [autotag]Daylen Austin[/autotag], flipped from LSU to Oregon.

So, LSU filled that spot by flipping four-star tight end [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag] from Vanderbilt to LSU. As of now, this class ranks as the No. 6 class in the country.

That is a great accomplishment for Brian Kelly and his staff, but there is a chance this class can enter the top five tomorrow if five-star cornerback [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] decides to take his talents to the Bayou. He is currently Crystal Balled to LSU, but nothing is certain until he signs his name on the dotted line.

That No. 6 ranking for the 2023 class is one spot better than Kelly’s 2022 recruiting class which finished.

BREAKING: LSU flips a tight end commitment away from another SEC school

The Tigers pulled off the flip of Ka’Morreun Pimpton from Vanderbilt.

The news that every Tiger fan has been waiting for on Wednesday has finally come.

[autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], once a Vanderbilt commit, has flipped his commitment on early signing day to LSU. Pimpton is a four-star, 6-foot-6, 220-pound tight end from Fort Worth, Texas.

Pimpton committed to Vanderbilt on July 26, and he stayed locked in on the Commodores until Wednesday. He spent the last two weekends taking visits to Texas and LSU so it came down to those three schools and the Tigers came out on top.

Pimpton is the third tight end signee of the 2023 recruiting class, following [autotag]Mac Markway[/autotag] and [autotag]Jackson McGohan[/autotag]. There have been some hits and misses so far for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] on national signing day, but this one is a big win for the Tigers.

The day is still young and we could see a lot more signees rolling in soon. This recruiting class just keeps getting better.
