LSU receiver Kyle Parker could be poised for breakout redshirt freshman season

Kyle Parker has reportedly seen first-team receiver reps at LSU’s spring practice.

As LSU works its way through spring ball, there’s one pressing question on the offensive side: Who can replace the production departing with first-round receivers [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag]?

While the Tigers may lack the experience in the receiver room, it’s a talented group with a number of players who could earn reps. One, however, has been a standout so far in spring ball.

Redshirt freshman [autotag]Kyle Parker[/autotag] — an Allen, Texas, native who appeared in four games as a true freshman in 2023 — was spotted taking reps with the first team along with [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag].

Parker was part of a talented receiver class in 2023 that also featured [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag]. The latter has since transferred, but with Sampson and a group that also features Liberty transfer [autotag]CJ Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag], a transfer addition who played occasionally in 2023, there are options for the Tigers.

However, it seems Parker is making an impression, with quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] recently saying that he had “worked his tail off.”

The Tigers have to replace a combined 2,746 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns from a season ago. The emergence of a player like Parker would certainly make that much more manageable.

Former LSU receiver Jalen Brown has found his new home

Jalen Brown is returning to his home state of Florida.

LSU freshman wide receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] has committed to his new team.

Brown will be taking his talents to Tallahassee, Florida. He will be joining DJ. Uiagalelei and Mike Norvell on a Florida State team that still believes it was snubbed from the College Football Playoff.

The Seminoles finished the 2023 season 13-1 after suffering a 63-3 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl. Brown played only three games for LSU in 2023 so he was able to retain his redshirt. He will arrive at Florida State with four years of eligibility remaining.

With Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson likely leaving for the NFL, Florida State will be looking for wide receivers to have the kind of productivity that those two guys had.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] will be looking to high school recruiting and the transfer portal to try to fill the roster spot that was made vacant with the loss of a former four-star wide receiver.

LSU lands a legacy SEC cornerback in the transfer portal

Austin Ausberry, son of former LSU linebacker Verge Ausberry, committed to the Tigers in the portal.

It has been a crazy day for LSU football. [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and Brian Thomas Jr. announced that they would enter their names into the 2024 NFL draft, [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag] entered the transfer portal,as did [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag].

All three of those things are bad news, but here is some good news.

LSU landed a redshirt freshman cornerback from Auburn in the transfer portal. Once again, another player from the boot is coming home. [autotag]Austin Ausberry[/autotag] is from Baton Rouge where he played for University Lab, and he’s the son of former Tigers linebacker [autotag]Verge Ausberry[/autotag].

The 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback redshirted last year for Auburn after appearing in only four games and making one tackle. This year was not much different for him. He appeared in only three games this year and made one tackle.

Ausberry will come to the bayou with three years of eligibility left and will provide LSU with another defensive back who has a little playing experience.

LSU true freshman receiver, former blue chip recruit enters transfer portal

A former top-70 recruit, Jalen Brown redshirted while appearing in three games in 2023.

Following the conclusion of LSU’s season with a 35-31 win over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day, it saw the departure of two of the top signees in the 2023 class.

First was former five-star offensive tackle [autotag]Lance Heard[/autotag], who signaled his decision when he didn’t travel with the team to Tampa. Next was former four-star receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], who entered just before the deadline on Tuesday night.

A top-70 prospect in the 2023 class from Gulliver Prep in Miami, Brown redshirted during his true freshman season while appearing in three games but recording no stats. He’ll have four remaining years of eligibility at his next stop.

It’s a blow to a Tigers receiver room that’s set to lose [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] It will return veterans [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag], [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] as well as another highly touted 2023 signee who redshirted in [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag]

WATCH: Garrett Nussmeier, Jalen Brown give LSU fans a glimpse at the future

The Garrett Nussmeier to Jalen Brown connection could be one to watch in the future.

While neither player is likely to have a huge impact on the field in 2023, the connection between quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] and true freshman receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] could be one to remember in the years to come.

Brown, a blue-chip receiver from Miami who was part of a talented receiver signing class for the Tigers, has impressed so far at LSU camp, and he seems to be building a connection with his potential future starting quarterback in Nussmeier.

In a clip posted by LSU, Nussmeier absolutely fired a deep ball to Brown, who had a step on fellow true freshman [autotag]Ashton Stamps[/autotag]. Brown made an impressive catch at the sideline for a big gain.

This is a deep receiver room, but Brown could break through and make an impact as a true freshman. Regardless, it’s good to see him building rapport with the likely starting signal-caller in 2024.

2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 14 Jalen Brown

Jalen Brown could eventually become a major impact player despite joining a talented receiver group.

Going into the 2023 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.

We’ve already looked at a couple of LSU’s 2023 receiver additions in [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyle Parker[/autotag], and now we’re looking at another in [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag]. Any time you can go steal a talented south Florida prospect from the in-state programs it’s a win, and Brown could eventually become a major impact player despite joining a talented receiver group.

Jalen Brown Preseason Player Profile

2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 11 Brian Thomas Jr.

After two seasons as a mostly rotational receiver, Brian Thomas Jr. could be poised to break out in 2023.

Going into the 2023 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.

We’re looking at a player in the receiver room who has shown a lot of signs of promise but is yet to put it all together in the form of a breakout campaign in Brian Thomas Jr. Entering a receiver room that he’s poised to be a leader in during his junior season, he has the potential to do just that in 2023.

Depth Chart Overview

A former top-100 recruit coming out of high school, Thomas has made 25 appearances over the last two seasons with 15 starts. He’s had just moderate production in that time, and though his numbers didn’t skyrocket as a sophomore, he did finish fourth on the team in receptions, fifth in yards and second in touchdowns.

With [autotag]Kayshon Boutte[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaray Jenkins[/autotag] heading to the NFL while [autotag]Jack Bech[/autotag] transfers out, that room is much less crowded in 2023. Alongside one of the SEC’s top receivers in Malik Nabers, Thomas could be an impact player in that group.

There will be others competing for targets, though, such as [autotag]Chris Hilton[/autotag], [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag] and Alabama transfer [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag]. The Tigers added a pair of highly-rated true freshmen as well in [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag]

5-star athlete puts LSU in top 11

LSU made the cut for Terry Bussey, but it’s unclear whether the Tigers will get an official visit.

A five-star recruit released his top 11 schools, and LSU made the cut.

Terry Bussey is the top athlete in the class in some rankings and joining LSU in his final 11 are division rivals Alabama, Texas A&M and Auburn. Bussey is a five-star on 247Sports, but On3, ESPN, and Rivals have him with four stars.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Texas A&M is in the driver’s seat with Texas also contending. Bussey is a multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball and baseball as well as competing in track and field.

I wouldn’t bet on Bussey ending up at LSU right now. There are several major programs in pursuit and it’s unclear if LSU will get an official visit.

It’s still early and things can always change. LSU could always use an athlete with Bussey’s speed. Last cycle, LSU added a speedster in [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], but Kelly has made it clear he wants to add more.

LSU still trending for top 150 receiver Bredell Richardson

The Tampa prospect said he “definitely” plans to take a trip to LSU this spring.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] hasn’t been afraid to go down to the Sunshine State to sign skill position talent.

He added Miami receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] in 2023, and he’ll look to add four-star receiver [autotag]Bredell Richardson[/autotag] in 2024. The Tampa Carrollwood Day prospect recently included LSU among a star-studded top eight, and the Tigers seem to have some momentum for the 6-foot-1, 185-pound wideout.

He told On3’s Billy Embody (subscription required) that he is “definitely” planning to take a trip to LSU following the end of the dead period, likely for the program’s Junior Day in March. He said he won’t visit all eight schools but has been hesitant to trim his list with the frequency of coaching changes in the sport.

Richardson has a good relationship with LSU receivers coach [autotag]Cortez Hankton[/autotag], who was teammates with Carrollwood Day head coach Marshall McDuffie on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tigers do have some ground to make up, however, as Notre Dame is a 70.8% favorite to land him per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Where does LSU’s 2023 recruiting class stand in the final 247Sports Composite Rankings?

The Tigers sit just outside the top five in the final rankings.

Signing day is done and dusted, and LSU’s 2023 recruiting class is officially in the books.

It was a bit anti-climactic for the Tigers — as is the case at many programs since the proliferation of the early signing period. LSU signed 25 high school players back in December while also adding 11 transfers already this offseason, and the program has largely turned its attention to 2024 since then.

It was a great bump class for coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag]. It didn’t quite crack the top five, but it featured a pair of five-stars in offensive tackle [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] — a top 15 overall player — and edge rusher [autotag]DaShawn Womack[/autotag]. LSU also added two top-100 receivers in [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and a stable of blue-chip players in the secondary.

Here’s where LSU’s promising haul stacks up against the rest of the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
