Sunday Big 12 morning rush: Texas, Oklahoma and West Virginia carry the conference

Big 12 football is finally back and the conference had a lackluster day. As a whole, the conference went 4-3, losing to three Sun Belt teams.

Big 12 football is finally back and the conference had a lackluster day. Iowa State and Kansas State lost to Louisiana and Arkansas State, respectively. To make matters worse, Kansas lost to Coastal Carolina for the second consecutive year, the third Sun Belt team to defeat a Big 12 team.

Outside of Texas, Oklahoma and West Virginia, Texas Tech was the only other conference team to win. However, a two-point victory over FCS level Houston Baptist provides little inspiration.

How the Longhorns, Sooners and Mountaineers got on with their opening weekend games:

Texas Longhorns vs UTEP Miners: Full game recap

Texas opened its 2020 season with a dominant victory over UTEP. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger had a historic day, having a career-high in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Playing the entire first half plus one drive in the second half, Ehlinger set a career-high in passing yards and passing touchdowns. His final stats sit at 25-of-33 with 426 yards and five touchdowns. Backup quarterbacks Casey Thompson and Hudson Card played the majority of the second half.

Wide receiver was a major question entering the season and Joshua Moore answered them. The redshirt sophomore opened the game with a 78-yard touchdown. Ehlinger found him five more times for a total of 127 yards.

Tarik Black also had a solid debut, securing five receptions for 80 yards. No other Longhorn receiver had more than three receptions.

Spencer Rattler, defense shine in Oklahoma’s 48-0 win over Missouri State

Only one other Big 12 team compared to Texas’ opening day, and it was Oklahoma. Redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler had an incredible day, throwing for 490 yards and four touchdowns.

Months of building excitement led to a lopsided victory on Saturday night, as Oklahoma defeated Missouri State 48-0 in its  season opener.

Spencer Rattler was at the center of an offensive supernova for Lincoln Riley and the Sooners.

Rattler met the occasion with rare fortitude for a redshirt freshman. The former five-star went 14-for-17 for 290 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half of the contest.

RECAP: West Virginia opens 2020 season with an Eastern Kentucky beatdown

While West Virginia got a big win, it did not quite compare to Texas or Oklahoma. The Mountaineers blew out Eastern Kentucky, 56-10. Year 2 of the Neal Brown era got off on the right foot.

The West Virginia Mountaineers (1-0) kicked off the 2020 season at home this afternoon with a 56-10 win over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (0-2) from the FCS Ohio Valley Conference.

Prior to the game, Neal Brown announced 11 players were suspended for the day, including starting inside receiver TJ Simmons, starting left tackle Junior Uzebu and starting center Chase Behrndt. Brown confirmed the suspensions were in a direct response to players violating a team rule and did not have anything to do with COVID-19. Those suspensions were lifted at the final whistle, so those players are free to rejoin the team and will be available for the next game.

2021 DB Javon Bullard makes commitment to UGA football

Cornerback Javon Bullard (Baldwin High School./Milledgeville, Georgia) has committed to the University of Georgia.

Cornerback Javon Bullard (Baldwin H.S./Milledgeville, Georgia) has committed to the University of Georgia. Bullard is a three-star recruit and is a member of the class of 2021.

Ranked as the nation’s No. 73 cornerback, Bullard picked Georgia over Louisville, NC State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Georgia now has 13 commitments in the class of 2021. Dan Lanning and the defense have two defensive back commitments. Georgia’s other 2021 defensive back to commit is four-star David Daniel.

Last year, the Dawgs added four defensive backs in the class of 2020. Georgia may be looking for more with the potential departures of Richard LeCounte, Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, and more. Don’t be surprised if Kirby Smart adds a couple more defensive backs in the class of 2021.

The in-state three-star recruit, Javon Bullard, has announced his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs football program via his Twitter account:

Texas Tech women’s basketball players describe toxic culture: ‘Fear, anxiety and depression’

Jori Epstein and Daniel Libit of the USA TODAY dove into the toxic culture within Marlene Stollings’ Texas Tech program. In her two years as head coach, 12 players have left after feeling abused by the coaching staff.

Among the claims:

The emphasis on maintaining an elevated heart rate during play drove two players to eschew taking over-the-counter painkillers in an effort to use the pain to keep their heart rates spiked.

The three international players on rosters the past two seasons allegedly faced treatment such as being ridiculed, isolated and threatened by coaches. Brazil native Marcella LaMark said Stollings told LaMark her fitness lagged so far behind teammates that she was “dangerous” to them.

Emma Merriweather, a 6-5 center, said she was admonished by coaches for displaying symptoms of depression, for which she was eventually diagnosed. She was also allegedly told by assistant coach Nikita Lowry Dawkins to snap a rubber band on her wrist when she had a negative thought.

Five players alleged strength and conditioning coach Ralph Petrella sexually harassed players, making suggestive comments to one player and using a therapy technique that involved applying pressure to some players’ chests and pubic bones and groins. Petrella, who denies any misconduct, resigned in March after the season.

Three players said Stollings retaliated by holding tougher practices after they brought abuse claims to school officials, including Judi Henry, executive senior associate athletic director and senior women’s administrator.

Kerry Martin Opts Out of 2020 Season

West Virginia has had their first football player opt-out of the 2020 football season in Kerry Martin. The sophomore cites his own personal diseases, sickle cell and asthma, as his reasoning.

As a freshman in 2019, Martin saw action in all 12 games, making four starts. He was the team’s sixth leading tackler (50), and also registered 2.5 tackles for loss, and five pass breakups on his way to being named on the Pro Football Focus All-Freshman Team (3rd team).

Latest update on OU’s plans for August opener

Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma got ahead of the Big 12 scheduling curve, moving their season opener against Missouri State up to Aug. 29. After the conference announced the season will start at a later date, the Sooners could be looking for a new nonconference opponent.

According to reports, that start date and OU’s game with Missouri State could be in jeopardy.

“Updated news from pair of OU decision-makers. Just told ‘unlikely play 8/29 given fewer games & later start.’ All revolves around B12 start date (ADs meet later today – maybe clarification) ‘Lots of schools calling #Sooners’ if must replace MoSt.,’” OKC-KWTV sports director Dean Blevins tweeted.

Additionally, Dallas Morning News Big 12 reporter Chuck Carlton was a guest on the Paul Finebaum Show on Tuesday and discussed the conference’s impending schedule release as well as OU’s plans for a Week Zero game.

“Dallas Morning News’ @ChuckCarltonDMN tells us the Big 12 plans to start conference play no earlier than Sept. 19. Oklahoma is scheduled to play Missouri St. on Aug. 29. ‘It’s going to be awkward if Oklahoma does that and then is off until Sept. 19,’” Finebaum tweeted.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: West Virginia Mountaineers Offense 3 Things To Know

It was supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding year for the program overall – with a whole new set of starters for a new coaching staff – but it’s West Virginia. It’s not supposed to rank dead last in the Big 12 in total and scoring offense. Having the nation’s third-worst running game is one thing, but not being able to move the ball at all for long stretches is another.

But again, it was a rebuilding run.

The quarterbacks are good, and they should be better. Former Oklahoma transfer Austin Kendall had a legitimate shot at taking the Sooner gig a few years ago before Kyler Murray went Kyler Murray, but he struggled last season with 1,989 passing yards and 12 touchdowns with ten picks before suffering a chest injury. Former Bowling Green starter Jarret Doege stepped in and was a bit sharper. Now they have to do more down the field.

The receiving corps gets a pass – it was really, really young, with three freshmen and two sophomores among the top seven targets. Just about everyone of note is back. Sophomore Sam James is a speedy target on the outside, but he averaged just 9.8 yards per grab on his team-high 69 catches.

6-2 TJ Simmons is a bigger receiver who finished second with 35 catches, but a deep threat has to emerge in place of the one big loss, George Campbell, who averaged close to 25 yards per catch with a team-high seven scores.

The offensive line did an okay job in pass protection, but it struggled mightily to generate even the slightest push for the ground game. Three starters are gone, hurt most by the loss of now-San Francisco 49er Colton McKivitz at left tackle. Two starters return, led by senior guard/center Chase Behrndt, for a line with decent size, but without a whole ton of bulk. Losing guard Josh Sills to Oklahoma State doesn’t help.

Leading runner Leddie Brown only rushed for 367 yards and a touchdown, and Kennedy McKoy is done, and Martell Pettaway left for Middle Tennessee. Brown is a good-sized back who can catch – he’s fine if the blocking gets the job done – and Alec Sinkfield adds a little flash.

A look at Georgia QB Jamie Newman’s high school recruitment, highlights

Looking at Wake Forest transfer QB Jamie Newman, now with Georgia football, as a high school prospect and some of his best highlights

We know that Wake Forest transfer quarterback Jamie Newman is one of the highest-graded quarterbacks returning in 2020, but what was Newman like as a high school prospect before playing for Wake and later transferring to Georgia?

Newman was a 3-star prospect at Graham High School in Graham, North Carolina and was ranked as the No. 17 dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.

Newman recorded a 4.7 40 in high school and held offers from NC State, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, North Carolina and Wake Forest, among six others.

Although Newman took unofficial visits to Duke, Wake Forrest, North Carolina, Vanderbilt and East Carolina, his college decision really came down between Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, NC State and West Virginia. And ultimately signed with Wake Forest in Feburary of 2016.

See some of our favorite highlights from Newman’s high school days here:
