2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

2022 Preseason CFN Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

RB Bijan Robinson, Jr. Texas

Okay, so he has been a bit more promise than actual production, but the superstar prospect has been outstanding when healthy, and now he should be the main man for a loaded Texas offense loaded with skill talent.

He’s got the size, quickness, and burst, running for 1,830 yards and 15 touchdowns with 41 catches and six scores in his first two years – but he can to a whole lot more. He’s an NFL starting running back hanging out in college, and now it’s salary drive time with a possible Heisman run along the way.

2022 Preseason CFN Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DE Will McDonald, Sr. Iowa State

The Cyclones might be in a bit of a rebuilding mode, but the defense should still be terrific starting with they’re outstanding two-time First Team All-Big 12 – and 2021 All-American – pass rusher who’s back for his fifth season.

The 6-3, 236-pounder started out well in his first two seasons, and then blew up with 22 sacks and 26 tackles for loss over the last two seasons from his hybrid position on the outside.

2022 Preseason CFN Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year

QB Jake Haener, Sr. Fresno State

The superstar recruit started out at Washington, went to Fresno State, was expected to join head coach Kalen DeBoer at Washington, changed his mind, and now he’s back with the Bulldogs – current head man Jeff Tedford knows a thing or two about how to coach up quarterbacks.

Haener threw for over 4,000 yards last season with 33 touchdowns and nine interceptions, but he can do so much more – like win lead the program to the Mountain West title.

2022 Preseason CFN Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year

LB Vince Sanford, Sr. Air Force

Take your pick of at least ten linebackers or ten more safeties or ten more pass rushers to be the Preseason Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, and you might not be wrong. Sanford gets the nod because of all he can do, coming off a breakthrough season with 59 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles. He broke up three passes, too.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Young, Jr. Alabama

Yeah, of course the reigning Heisman winner who came really, really close to pulling out a national championship comes into the following season as the conference’s top offensive star. However, that’s not the given you might think it is considering just about ever SEC team has a quarterback talented enough to be a problem on any given Saturday.

The transfer portal brought LSU Jayden Daniels from Arizona State. Ole Miss got Jaxson Dart from USC and South Carolina got a gem in Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma. Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson have the pro scouts drooling, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is special, and Mississippi State’s Will Rogers might lead the SEC in passing.

Meanwhile, a few of those big names are in battles for the starting job, and the one guy not mentioned – Stetson Bennett – quarterbacked his team to the national title.

The SEC is loaded with passers who could start just about anywhere else outside of the conference, and Young is the best of the bunch. He might not be huge, he might not have a cannon, and he doesn’t run much, but he reads everything, is deadly accurate, and he’s about to make a big push to repeat as the Heisman winner after hitting 67% of his passes for 4,872 yards and 37 touchdowns with seven picks.

2022 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Will Anderson, Jr. Alabama

It wasn’t just that Anderson was a pass rushing terror on a defense loaded with NFL prospect, it’s that he didn’t stop until Georgia held him in relative check in the national title – and the rest of the D took advantage of the attention paid to 31 – it was the consistency and alpha defender aspect to his game. Be shocked if the production doesn’t keep on rolling.

He came up with two or more tackles for loss in 11 games, made 101 stops on the season with 17.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss. No one else had more than 22 tackles for loss – he was the only player to average over two per game – and only Army’s Andre Carter averaged more sacks per game – 1.19 to 1.17.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

2022 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Sean Tucker, Soph. Syracuse

Go ahead and name any one of about six or so ACC quarterbacks that might be the star of the league, and you probably won’t be wrong. Or, there’s a chance one of the others in the deep lot will rise up and be the best of the bunch. Meanwhile …

Sean Tucker might be the best running back in college football.

Everyone knows what’s coming with 34, and he still able to produce, running for almost 1,500 yards last year with 20 touchdowns with two receiving scores. He’s not all that big, but he’s tough, shifty, and really, really fast.

So yeah, the air attacks will take center stage in the conference, but Tucker should be the best of the offensive bunch.

2022 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DT Bryan Bresee, Jr. Clemson

Bresee has only been able to make 36 tackles with 5.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in his two seasons, but that’s partly because he suffered a torn ACL early last year to go along with a shoulder issue.

When he’s right – and he’s expected to be ready to go – the 6-5, 300-pounder has the talent to be the best overall player in the country and possible No. 1 overall pick with too much athleticism, skill, and quickness to go along with his size.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Clayton Tune, Sr. Houston

Can Tune be for Houston what Desmond Ridder was for Cincinnati last year? The numbers should be strong – SMU QB Tanner Mordecai might have the better passing season, though – but it’s more than that. Tune is the veteran leader on what should be the best team in the American Athletic Conference – and the stats aren’t bad, either.

He hit 68% of his passes for 3,546 yards and 30 touchdowns and ten picks, ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and led the way to a terrific 12-win season with a bowl victory. Now Houston is looking for even more.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year

LB Deshawn Pace, Jr. Cincinnati

Call this a projection that Pace takes his game up a few notches and becomes an even bigger terror for offenses.

An underappreciated all-around hybrid linebacker – he only earned Honorable Mention All-AAC honors last year – the 6-2, 215-pounder was all over the field making 95 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss and four picks, highlighted by a huge one against Indiana. It’s not really his role, but if he becomes more of a pass rusher, he’ll be a gamewrecker.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

QB Grayson McCall, Jr. Coastal Carolina

The star in the emergence of Coastal Carolina football, McCall has been one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers over the last two seasons hitting 71% of his throws for close to 5.400 yards with 53 touchdowns and six picks.

He’s able to run – 870 yards and 11 career touchdowns – hit the deep ball, and get the high-octane attack rolling at will. Coastal Carolina has some rebuilding to do, but McCall will make everyone around him better.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

LB Carlton Martial, Sr. Troy

The newly configured Sun Belt is loaded with do-it-all linebackers, but no one does-it-all more more than Martial. He’s not all that big, but the 5-9, 210-pound flash gets all over the field as a bit of a hybrid playmaker.

Going into his fifth season, he already has 443 tackles, ten sacks, 47.5 tackles for loss, and five picks with seven forced fumbles on the resumé.

2022 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year

Caleb Williams, QB Soph. USC

It takes something special to standout among this group of Pac-12 quarterbacks, and the possible two best – throw in Washington State’s Cameron Ward, a transfer from Incarnate Word – and Williams have yet to take a snap in the conference.

Williams put on a show over the second half of last year running Lincoln Riley’s offense at Oklahoma, and now he’s joining the fun in Los Angeles with a loaded group around him. Last year he hit 65% of his passes for 1,912 yards and 21 scores with just four picks, and he ran for 442 yards and six scores. Get ready for him to take things to another level.

2022 Preseason CFN Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year

Noah Sewell, LB, Soph. Oregon

The big thumper in the middle of the Oregon linebacking corps made 114 tackles last year with four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss with five broken up passes, an interception, and with two forced fumbles. Now there’s a chance he does even more with the talent on both sides to take over at times.

If Justin Flowe can finally catch a break from the injuries, he’s one of the Pac-12’s best linebackers, and Mase Funa and Bradyn Swinson are going to be big-time, too. Everything will flow right into the middle for Sewell to clean up.

2022 Preseason CFN Independent Offensive Player of the Year

TE Michael Mayer, Jr. Notre Dame

No, he’s not the receiver or big play target Brock Bowers of Georgia is, and there are plenty of other great tight ends coming into the season, but the 6-4, 251-pound veteran will get more than his share of the spotlight as one of the season’s biggest stars.

The future NFL starter caught 71 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns last season after making 42 in 2020. Now it’s salary drive time as he pushes to be a high first round draft pick with his physical style, blocking, and pass catching skills. He can do it all.

2022 Preseason CFN Independent Defensive Player of the Year

LB Andre Carter, Jr. Army

Yeah, yeah, yeah, a slew of Notre Dame defensive players probably should be fighting it out for this spot – Isaiah Foskey is fantastic; he’s the better pro prospect and more talented overall player – but Army’s special pass rusher gets the top nod assuming he can come close to matching the production of last year.

Who led the nation in sacks? Alabama’s Will Anderson had the most, but it was Carter who had the most sacks per game – 1.19 compared to 1.17 – to go along with his 44 tackles, four forced fumbles, and 18.5 tackles for loss.

No, he didn’t play an SEC schedule like Anderson, and he didn’t deal with the slate that Foskey had to, but he came up with big plays against Wisconsin and in the bowl win over Missouri, and the production was steady. Expect him to keep it all going as the star of an Army team with a defense to match the deadly rushing attack from the other side – almost.
